September 2020 Monthly Running Challenge

@quilteryoyo Sorry about the news . But yes I too would rather get it done sooner than later. I would just worry the whole 3 months - what does the PA think will change?
@eleanorhawkins Hugs, girl.
I do not like rain either. Light rain or misty ok. But RAINING? No. Not to run in for me lol. Which it is today. RAINING that is. Thanks to Beta.
And as such treadmill walk/run for 6.5 miles.3 -
Thanks everyone. As for why wait 3 months....I didn't ask. I know it won't shrink. Perhaps it would be to see if it stabilizes again. It didn't really grow for 2 years. But, I am really leaning toward "ripping the band aid off" and getting it done sooner rather than later. One of the people I played tennis with this morning is a retired nurse and her husband a retired surgeon. She also said I should just go ahead and get it done and knows the surgical group I am seeing and has confidence in their abilities. That made me feel better about it too.
I played tennis this morning and then came home and did a treadmill workout - walked 1 mile and ran 3, easy pace.
Also 13/20 miles walked.

@Tramboman thank you so much for saying that! I feel like for one reason or another, we are all always in the ring, boxing. But the only option is to show up, get hit, and keep coming at em. At least, that is how I have survived this long.
@polska_girl Yep! So a fun thing about autism is that there are usually comorbid diagnosis. So mine's go the works. Anxiety (wretched), ADHD, and Tourette's. She has legitimate panic attacks sometimes but then SOMEHOW MANAGES TO MAYBE HAVE BROKEN A TOE BECAUSE SHE THOUGHT SHE COULD SWING IN THE NET FOR STUFFED ANIMALS AFTER SHE REMOVED THE ANIMALS! I'm just about to take her to the doctor.
Love rain. Depends on how bad it is if I'll run it it. I have run in all the weathers, even lightning.
@skippygirlsmom yes. Grief has not gotten better for me either, but the opposite.
@quilteryoyo why wait? I will be on my knees, praying for you. Genuinely, I am telling you, I love you. Please be okay.
Third leg last night was 15.5 miles. Lawd it was a long night. I am tired. But it was actually a beautiful run. I did get cat-called, which has never happened, and I found it very rude. Probably dumb drunk college kids, but still. Didn't your mother raise you better than that??!?!?!
Tonight the kids go to their dad and I have 46 miles tomorrow. Sunday is 31ish.
I'm going to live. This is a great idea.
Right?8 -
@quilteryoyo : Not speaking as a doctor here-I'll leave that to your PCP and specialists, (tho I will add that it is a big operation with risks, I'm sure they told you all that.)
But I will also add my family experience: at age 54 my mom stood up, said I don't feel well, and fell down dead from her aneurysm. Almost exactly a year later, her first cousin stood up, said I don't feel well, and also fell down dead from her aneurysm. At age 50, I hurried off for my own CT.6 -
Thanks @Camaramandy648 . I love you all too. Good luck with the teenager. I hope her toe is okay. Good luck with all the running this weekend!
@HonuNui I know that I am actually lucky in that I know that it is there. So many don't, so don't have a chance to get it taken care of. I guess the only drawback is the fact that it is a BIG operation with a couple of months of recuperation. I just need to get my head around that before I say "yes." Did your CT scan show anything?1 -
Love you @quilteryoyo stay strong!1

Memphians are total wussy-pants about rain, therefore I guessed that no one would be on the Greenline at Shelby Farms, which is usually too crowded for me to feel safe about running there. And I was right, we passed two cyclists and one walker in nine miles. Their loss, it was beautiful, nice soft rain.]
What a beautiful place to run. I had the same experience in Durham (NC) yesterday and it really was not even raining...but just misting...a little.
2 -
@quilteryoyo gosh I hope things go well for you. I too was wondering, why the 3-month wait? And I hope all the running you have done leaves you in a better place as far as being prepared for surgery.
Good luck!
1 -
@quilteryoyo I'm so sorry to hear about your aneurysm and the need for surgery. Not knowing the details of the surgery and recovery, I can only say that I would weigh wanting to get it taken care of as soon as possible and when would be the best timing for recovery. I would ask what's the soonest you can get it done as scheduling can take so long you may end up waiting longer than you hoped even if you say do it now. You medical team seems comfortable with waiting so perhaps balancing getting it done ASAP with the best timing for you to spend recovering?
@kgirlhart and @mbaker566, thinking of you both as well. I lost my dad 15 years ago and my sister 6 years ago and I feel for you both in this tough time. I know I felt like I was barely functioning for such a long time.
@Eleanorhawkins hugs to you too.
And anyone else in need. Hoping for some peace and strength for everyone.

Such a beautiful few days we're having. Yesterday I did a short run before strength training. It was just getting light out as I started to run so the day is noticeably shorter than last week. I don't like doing that run on the roads near the gym in the dark, even with lights so I'll need to figure that out. Strength training was inside the gym for the first time this week and it was not too bad to wear masks, and of course wiping down all the equipment. We did bench press, leg press, box jumps and the weighted sled - so lots of things I haven't done for months. And I am really sore today because of that! It was good to get back to it though.
Today I needed to get tons of work done so I went in a little early and didn't get a run done. I brought running stuff with me but after work I had to get groceries and I was just not in the mood to change and go for a run too. I got home and took Stella out for a walk, dressed to run after. After about a mile of walking I decided we could just get the run done so I picked up the pace. She did a great job tonight, only a few dead stops this time. We both enjoyed the nice weather and the gorgeous sunset as we got home. A couple of pics from our run/walk:6 -
@quilteryoyo It sounds like you've got a good medical team. I'd go for getting it done sooner as well.
@Camaramandy648 and a few others from time to time... polska_girl is actually a different user. Last I checked, she wasn't active on MFP, but if she gets notifications she might be wondering what everyone is talking about But otherwise, I totally hear you on the parenting stuff. And it sounds like you're doing great, even though I'm sure it's tough.1 -
@quilteryoyo I am so sorry for your news. I would follow the recommendations of your medical team. I know I would personally ruminate on it if I delayed too long, but it is a big decision, and I know you are trying to weigh everything out.
@Camaramandy648 Reading your post makes me tired! My half today seems like nothing compared to that mileage! Please be careful and listen to your body during your runs.3 -
Hi all. Been unable to run for a few days and generally felt like life was beating me up a bit! But I know that others on here have some real struggles right now. Sending big hugs @kgirlhart @eleanorhawkins @mbaker566 and @quilteryoyo and anyone else I missed. Nodding along with the parenting chat too. Mine are 11 and 9 but teen moodiness seems to have made an early entrance. Especially difficult when you are a single parent @Camaramandy648 - I’m in the same boat and send you sympathy!!
Some of you might remember that one of my random acts of kindness in memory of Pastor Vincent was to offer to make a wedding cake for the son of a colleague. He is an intensive care doctor who has worked hard throughout the pandemic, and had to postpone and change the wedding plans 3 times so I was extra happy to do it, even though I’ve never met the couple! Pic in spoiler below (if I’ve managed it...) @rheddmobile probably too late for Kristi’s book but if not I can email it to you.

@Faebert that looks amazing! Definitely not too late. My husband had an honest to goodness work deadline this week so we are a little slow ourselves!2
-
@Faebert That is an awesome cake! I'm sure they are delighted! Thanks for the hugs.0

@katharmonic As far as recovery goes, what I know right now is it would be 6-8 weeks of not driving and not lifting over 10 pounds, and not running....so the sternum can heal completely. He did say I would be able to/encouraged to walk. But, I didn't really ask for details as I was a little blind sided by the results, since it had been stable for 3 years. Hence, the weekend to get my head around everything. Leaning toward just going ahead and getting it done. Weather will be nicer to walk outside in the Fall. I know I shouldn't worry about it, but I hate to not be able to take care of the leaves and lawn. I really don't want my mom and dad to have to do that and they would be really mad if I hired someone to do it. It's a balancing act.4

@Faebert OMG that cake is incredible! You are clearly talented and so nice of you to do that for them. I want to get married just so you can make that cake for me
@quilteryoyo it's a tough decision and I can imagine being caught off guard that this is happening now rather than "someday in the long term future". Hire the leaves done, maybe a teenager or something that you can tell your parents you are helping the kid out by giving them a job. Negotiating parents is hard, but do what's best for you!
Good run @Tramboman

I cannot stop saying how beautiful it is outside. 54 degrees to start this morning (high of 79 for today), blue skies, gorgeous fall colors starting to show. A little bit humid but I'll allow it. I had a wonderful long run with friends, even though we did a lot of hills (including one we call Sweet Baby Jesus or SBJ, but we went down it, so didn't get the full experience) and I was sore. I need to go into work but I'm sitting and watching some leaves fall with the breeze in the sun and it's pretty hard to motivate. I'll make myself a deal to get a few hours in and then go out and enjoy a fantastic evening.
I set a conservative goal of 100 miles for this month, so I'm very happy to be right there already even with many short run days. I'm not going to set a higher goal, I'll just consider miles for the rest of the month a bonus.

Wow, that is an incredible looking cake @Faebert! Just finished my run, so that would hit the spot nicely 😁
10 miles this morning. Was a very pleasant 63°F.
Took it slow and easy the first 7 miles, then I started feeling a little tired so I felt like I should relax and take it even slower, but those last 3 miles were my fastest. Have been running for over 8 years now and still haven't figured this thing out ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
6 -
@katharmonic Glad you are having such great weather and great runs. Love the SBJ hill. LOL
@Scott6255 Funny how sometimes when you try to go slower, you actually go faster.0 -
It's been rainy here for 3 days. Not ideal for running out the rural road. So, I did a treadmill session today. I ran an easy pace 5K and walked a mile.
Also 14/20 miles walked.

The best-laid plans. I had the Jangover 15k to do today. I also wanted to use it for my every damn trail. So I picked a trail that was about 8 miles and I knew the trails leading to the trails were listed as a total of 1.5 each way. So you figure 11 miles total. Well, it was almost 14.5 miles total. And it was almost ALL sand. Holy *kitten* that was so freaking hard. And hot. And no shade. I thought I wasn't going to make it out and Justin would have to tell them where to find my body. So basically I did an unplanned 14.5 mile hike instead of a 3ish mile hike and a 15k trail run.11

My husband and I unexpectedly ran a race! Well... we sort of ran a race. What happened was we got an email from St Jude saying Saturday was the St Jude Run/Walk with augmented virtual reality. Had to try that out. But after looking at the details I realized it was going to be impossible to manage while running. So we printed our bibs, went out, and ran 5k at race pace, then turned on the virtual experience thingy and walked it. This turned out to be the right decision since it functioned very slowly and sometimes wouldn’t load, and with all the standing around like idjits we ended up walking 24 minute miles! Also it measured in “steps,” with 6600 supposedly being 5k. I use a phone, not a watch, and don’t have a step tracker. Their idea of 6600 steps was about four miles, not 3.1. So... would not have been a PR!
Which it was, btw, at least a PR for 2020 since I started using Strava. 5k in 28:45 babee almost back to feeling like myself again! Knee is touchy afterwards so I need to be careful. My actual PR is 27:03 I think, but what with one thing and another I don’t think I’ve been faster than 29 minutes this whole year! The cooler weather had something to do with it, although it was still a touch warm for all out running - 73 degrees when we finished. First mile in 8:54 and Strava was calling long - the measured mile segment that I cover during that period was in 8:38 supposedly. Which is close to my PR pace!
My husband and I had fun goofing around with the virtual stuff once we got it working. The starting gate, which was the first thing, spawned underground in the middle of the railroad tracks! Uh, no. We eventually got it to spawn somewhere else. Whoever did the VR experience didn’t think it through, there’s no way to take photos while viewing, so we took turns standing in front of the camera and taking screenshots of each other. It’s a little like a very boring game of Pokémon go. But fun to have a pretend start and finish arch!
The name on my bib is Jerry Chipman, who was my honorary “uncle” while I was growing up. Jerry was also head of fundraising at St Jude’s for decades. He died earlier this year, so when I saw the bib had a place for who you run for, I immediately thought of him. My second pick (except I don’t know her whole name!) would have been the daughter of my friend at the gyro shop. She had favism when she was little, which is a rare reaction to a protein in fava beans which causes the body to attack red blood cells! They thought she had leukemia at first, it’s such a rare disease in the US that it took them a while to diagnose. It’s inherited and more common in the Middle East. Anyway St Jude figured it out and now she is a beautiful and brilliant young woman, yay!14 -
@RunsOnEspresso That sounds brutal, but you did it!!!
@rheddmobile Congratulations on your 2020 PR! Great pace. Love all of the virtual pictures. What a cute idea. My favorite is the saying about the moon.

@quilteryoyo – sorry for the news that your aneurysm has grown. The doctors recently found one in my co-worker’s husband and they are trying to make the same decision. His doctor just recommended that he go to a doctor in New York to have the procedure done. Are you looking to stay local? I know you don’t want to put your parents to extra trouble taking care of the lawn and other things while you will be recovering but it will be good to let them do something to help you. I’m sure they will be feeling helpless and if they think they are doing something to help you, that will make all the difference to them.
@WandaVaughn – I hope your daughter gets good news at her next appointment.
@Faebert – sorry about life’s troubles but wow what a beautiful cake! You are very talented!
Great race pace @rheddmobile!! Love the virtual race concept!
Nice job @runsonespresso!

@Faebert Beautiful cake!!!
@RunsOnEspresso Sorry your 15k didn’t go as planned, but go you for making it through!
@rheddmobile How fun! I’ve never heard of VR for a race. Interesting concept. Great time for your 5k!
Yesterday, I ran the virtual Beat the Blerch half marathon. I actually ended up with my second best half marathon time, which pleased me considering I was running alone with no race crowd or adrenaline. The temp was in the mid 60s, and it was foggy/humid. It didn’t feel too awful though.10
