I was worried that this storm would mess up my run schedule this week, which was already a little off because of work and climbing schedules. But, the weather has cooperated just enough for me to make it work. My daughter is on a competitive climbing team so she has set days for her practice and in the interest of minimizing trips to the gym, I climb during her practice time. It's hard to run and climb on the same day, but some weeks there is no way around it. I have climbing tonight and I'm tired. Maybe I'll just do some easier stuff and save the try hard for another day.6 -
Guess what!? Hamstring did fine! Yay. Went for a run this morning 55F wow cool to start, but I warmed up pretty quick. Shorts and tshirt were good (was chilly the first 10 min though).
6.65 run, and .75 run/walk home. Was a good run. Felt good. Of course the temps helped and I'm sure the rest from running as well, maybe the cycling as well.
I will go with whatever is decided on the medals.
@camaramandy - oh teenage issues. Ya. tell me about it.
Ok back to work - I'll check back later.7 -

@Scott6255 what time do you get up to run? I cannot imagine running before work and getting the kids and myself off to school. I think my life would be better, but a 4am wake up time just sounds like two extra hours of drinking coffee Friend of mine asked me this weekend, "What would you change about your life, if you could change anything?" My answer was, I kid you not, "I'd wake up at 4am to run and still also run in the evenings, just shorter." That makes my life sound pretty dang good, right? Plus, it's something i COULD actually change if I'd actually just DO it.
I'm in Texas...I know some people think of us as a separate country, but as far as I know we still qualify for USA domestic shipping
I get up at around 3:30am to run. Mostly because it takes me like an hour to wake up and get coffee, small breakfast, dress, and warm-up. And because I like to get in to work by about 6:00am.4 -
c25k today was two rounds of jog 90/walk 90/jog 3min/walk 3min. Those three min stretches are the longest I've ran without a walking break since I got back into running! It felt good.

@Camaramandy648 Thanks for the praise. I tried to run it like a race.1

message me with next months, just figured this app out, never knew you could communicate like this. Usually just tracked my stuff an got off.3
-
@martaindale listen to your body.
@Tramboman you kicked its butt
@scott6255 what do you do for a living? I usually try to get to work by 7, but you are crazier than me. Yes, in Texas you are a separate species, rotfl. Sooooooo different from Arkansas, lmao. You'll make the millionth person I need to run with in Texas. Why haven't I driven there yet?!
@hamsterwheel6 Yay for your hamstring! Also yeah, teens. I turned her data off so according to her I am mean and cold and she even said I'm abusive. LMAO. When i was a kid, I actually did get beaten. Often. With all manner of things. She has no idea.... but hey, maybe that homework will get done now!
@kristinajeang I love the c25K app. I remember feeling how you are feeling right now. How exciting! keep going! You're gonna be so proud of yourself and we are all cheering for you!
Okay, finally - Kristi says she's got a headcount of about 8 people. She said she'll get back to me with the final #. So I think what I need to do now is wait for the sample, take some good photos of it, weigh it, make sure you all and Kristi and her people get to see it, and then we decide on headcount and money. Right?
Anyway, my brain is 100% fried so I was mostly just checking and wanted to make sure I didn't forget Kristi's update. Also I thought my egg for lunch was boiled and it wasn't so when I cracked it by squeezing, egg came out and it freaked me out so I practically through it across the kitchen at work.
It's been the best day, I'm tellin ya.9 -

This, so much this.
However I am willing to contribute towards one for his family.1 -

Bahaha she may mean @ContraryMaryMary
Thing is you would want to do it tracked, and that gets very expensive very fast. Even for a medal it can cost up to $30 for shipping - that's USD.
Also, I didn't participate as I couldn't. I'm heartbroken over that. And that's 9ne of the reasons I took a break, after he died, and all the tribute runs started, I had to sign off for a bit because its hard that I can't join in (12 days, and I can start running again!). So I haven't earned a medal.
As I said though, I would be more than happy to pay for a medal for Kristin and her family. That's a better way for me to get involved.9 -

@Avidkeo and @ContraryMaryMary both sound great! I don't blame you and i also love the idea of entering another race.
I was just trying to count up how many I've done this year and I can't. Because the Uncanceled Project and then all the other smaller ones, like the Gump one and Scooby Doo... and then all the aravaipa ones.
I was just thinking I am so tired today and then I realized between three computer monitors, countless spreadsheets, kids, running, what to make for dinner... duh, of course I am tired.6 -

Well kittens. That sounds like a tough couple of weeks. Hope you catch a break soon and I’m sorry for your loss.2 -
Really nice run today - it went from gloriously 70 degrees and bright sunlight on the last day of summer to 59 degrees and raining literally overnight. But! Blessing in disguise! Memphians are total wussy-pants about rain, therefore I guessed that no one would be on the Greenline at Shelby Farms, which is usually too crowded for me to feel safe about running there. And I was right, we passed two cyclists and one walker in nine miles. Their loss, it was beautiful, nice soft rain.
Soooo nice to be back on a real paved trail instead of the steeply canted roads in this area. I’m pretty sure all my knee troubles are from running with one leg shorter than the other on a slanted road. Hooray for flat surfaces! Did 10k easy (and easy turned out to be less than 11 minutes for a change, due to the cooler weather) and walked three. Saw beautiful violet colored wild morning glory vines all over everywhere. Passed a bunch of painted rocks with kind sayings such as “You are amazing.” Two horses in a field were frolicking, bucking and rearing and racing each other. Got home, ordered delivery from my favorite gyro place and the owner’s daughter wrote “We still love and miss you!” with a big smiley and hearts on the box, plus free baklava.
Photos taken with my phone in a plastic bag because I need to get my screen repaired. Also: I bought a new hat! Secondhand but new with original tags off of Poshmark, 12 bucks for a 30 dollar hat, not bad. I like that the brim is soft so it folds small enough to go in a pouch. My old hat was badly stained and sad looking.10 -
Re: medals. The place I got the quote from does three varieties of medal, a die cast which is a standard circle with stuff on it, custom die cast, and acrylic, which can be any shape and has a quicker turnaround and lower cost. For the acrylic this is the info I have:Qty 50-100 custom acrylic medals (white acrylic)
3.75"
1-1/2" standard neck band (Unattached)
$4.49 each
Shipping $20
(That’s $244.50 for a batch of 50 medals)
Given our custom die cast medals require a 200 piece minimum, your best bet would be our custom acrylic medals. In addition, we obtain all custom neckbands from overseas which has been taking longer than usual due to covid. I would suggest we include your neckband text on the medal itself which not only would save time and cost. We manufacture the acrylic medals ourselves and cn control lead time and handle last minute additions or changes to orders. In addition, our acrylic medals are usually made much larger than a die cast medals to add weight and girth.
This page has examples of what some of their custom acrylic medals look like:
https://www.justawardmedals.com/Custom-Award-Medals-Color-Printed-Acylic-s/796.htm
I would prefer a custom shaped die cast over this, if that can be had at comparable cost, but these look like a reasonable compromise between cost and looks.0 -
@kristinajeang Glad your ankle is doing better! I remember when I did c25k each run seemed like it was going to be impossible, but then by the time I got to the next part, turns out it wasn’t impossible after all!
@Camaramandy648 I am afraid I laughed out loud at your egg story. Also - teens - it’s a miracle my mom and I lived through my 14th year without anyone actually being set on fire.2 -

@robertmuino If you bookmark this thread, hit the little star at the top right of the page, you can easily find us. Feel free to lurk and comment and then join in next month. The link to October will be posted here a couple of days before the end of the month.
@kristinajeang Yeah for your progress. C25K is a great program.
@mbaker566 So sorry for you losses. Doing nothing with no should's sounds like a great way to get a handle on everything. Glad you already have a job offer.
@rheddmobile Glad you had a nice run on one of your favorite trails. It looks really nice. For some reason, I didn't picture it in my head as being paved. I love morning glories and watching horses frolic. Sounds like a wonderful morning.

I played tennis this morning and then worked until 2:30. I made myself get out and run after I got home. I don't know why it is so hard to "talk myself into running" some days. Anyway, it was 66°F when I headed out at 3:50 pm. For some reason, I had been cold all day, so put on long pants and a jacket. The jacket came off after the first lap on the driveway. LOL
I have had a baby tick problem the last couple of weeks - Tippy has managed to find a nest and gotten them all over her. So, I am keeping her on leash for a while, hoping they will be gone soon. I decided to see if she would run with me today. She did my warm up walk really nicely...has done that before. Then, I took her on the first two laps of my run. Holding the leash made it a little awkward, but she really did great. Not stopping and easily keeping up with me. But, she was ready to stop after that.
The run was uneventful and fairly easy. I just did 2 miles easy and then sped up to I'd say a medium effort for the last mile. It turned out to be an 11:27 pace, which isn't too bad for the driveway. Also walked one mile.
Also 12/20 miles walked.

Tonight's group speedwork was a dice roll workout. The dice were a bit kinder this time than previously and we got 6-1-4-3-2-6 minute intervals, with 90 seconds recovery between. We had about 10 minutes warmup and cooldown as well. I forgot to restart my watch 3 times tonight, missing the 2 minute interval completely and the first part of both the warmup and cooldown. So the total is a bit of an estimate.
It was fully dark at the end of this workout so I definitely need to be bringing my lights now. I just got Noxgear lights finally when they were on sale, and the LightHound ones for the dog too, so we'll be ready to go out there like a light parade. But I also want a better headlamp because I hate trying to run fast and not being able to see the road in front of me.

I'd like to say thank you to all who offered condolences on the passing of my dad. I would like to mention everyone by name, but it has been a really hard week and even though I have been reading through the thread I'm sure I have missed a lot. I have run a few times this week and that has actually helped some. I knew that losing a parent would be hard, but it is so much harder than I thought it would be. And we were not expecting it. I did not think when I went to Ft. Worth on Tuesday that would be it. We were lucky though. They let us take turns and go in and sit with him that day. And then after the decision was made to take him off the ventilator they bent the rules and let my mom and me and my four sisters all stay with him until the end. And my husband and one brother in law and a couple of nephews were able to wait together in a conference room down the hall. It was a terrible day, but it could have been worse.
I had run on the 15th before we left to go to Ft. Worth. That was my usual 6 mile run. Then on Thursday I ran 3 miles in Denton. I had spent the night at my son's before heading home. And on Friday I also ran 3 miles. Sunday I got 7 miles in. We had the funeral on Monday. It was nice as funerals go. It was a beautiful day and we had a graveside service at the Veterans Cemetery in Abilene. Then yesterday and today it was cloudy and misty. It wasn't bad running weather but it was gloomy looking and I was glad it wasn't like that on Monday. I ran 4 miles yesterday and this morning I ran 6. Luckily I have a really nice boss and he told me to take as much time as I needed. I thought I would go back to work today, but I just wasn't ready. But I am planning to go in tomorrow. I know at some point life has to move forward and I don't think Daddy would want us to mope around forever.

@mbaker566 - Sorry your having such a rough time3 -
Yesterday I cycled to meet a friend and we went for a long walk. Today I went for a run in the woods, and it was SO nice. My HM race this week is Sunday and is apparently totally flat. Maybe I shall try to try to improve on my time.5
-
@mbaker566 I’m sorry you are going through all of that. Hugs for you and your family.1

I haven’t posted in a few days. I’ve just been busy and tired. I have a virtual half marathon Saturday,
and I got a fun swag box of stuff for it. It is supposed to be warm and humid that morning, as opposed to the nice, cool mornings we’ve had the rest of this week, but I’m hoping it will go well.5 -
@kgirlhart Wish I could give you some real hugs, but virtual ones will have to do. I'm glad your family was able to be with your dad at the end. I think that is so important for everyone. Continue to take care of yourself. We're here if you need us.

0924-8k, total-40.8k goal-80k
Another solid 8km run in the morning. 17°C setting out, and it had just finished raining so high humidity. One of those funky runs where you feel hot and cold at the same time. Joints are a little stiff, probably due to lack of sleep, but good run overall.
Which brings me to my ventures into polyphasic sleep, which will be a bit of an essay -Background: I don't sleep a lot. I fall asleep just fine but tend to wake up 3 or 4 hours later and end up staring at the ceiling until the sun comes up. This happens three or four times a week. Sunday night I couldn't sleep anyway and stayed up for a friend until pretty much 6:30am, then ended up taking naps at work at noon and then in the late afternoon. When I woke up again at 4am on Tuesday morning, it suddenly struck me - isn't this what they call polyphasic sleeping anyway?
The experiment: Chose a schedule made up of 4.5 hours of sleep at night, three 20min naps a day. Right now I'm putting them right before work, during lunch break, and then another one that is supposed to be 5pm-ish but oftentimes gets kicked around so I've ended up sleeping in really weird places and times. Today I was entirely dead to the world during a 45 minute car ride to our next event venue.
Today is day 4 of the experiment. I'd call it an overall success. Feeling much more alert and productive than someone sleeping 5 hours a day has the right to. I do get extremely sleepy before the "main sleep" of the day though. A client tried to get me to write something at 11pm last night, and I looked over it this morning and it was complete gibberish. (Or perhaps this whole post is complete gibberish and I just can't tell yet.) It kind of feels like previously when I get sleepy it's my brain saying it's tired. Now it's my whole body yelling at me to sleep, with rising pressure in my cells or something.
Adverse effects of the schedule are, of course, the overwhelming tiredness when I can't get a nap in time. I'm exhibiting many of the often mentioned symptoms people talk about in this "adaption phase", headaches, flu-like aches, drowsiness in the new waking hours. They say these go away in a few weeks.
An interesting side effect perhaps. I think I'm a bit happier on this schedule. Maybe because one is much more aware of oneself and the timing of the next nap. It's like my brain is suddenly thrown into constant survival mode and has no more time to care about the existential problems like why am I here and what am I doing with my life.
Will keep on with this experiment and report back if anyone is interested.Camaramandy648 wrote: »"I'd wake up at 4am to run and still also run in the evenings, just shorter."popping in
