Congratulations @ContraryMaryMary - I have never had a good outcome running with pace groups either. For me they have either gone too slow or taken off too fast and I ended up passing them well before the finish. I do think there are some great pacers out there (probably @mobycarp) and some people really like them and benefit from running with them.
@tramboman - My doctor though said the best thing I could do for my knees what to keep running and doing what I was doing otherwise I wouldn't be able to... I have read that having an efficient, proper gait does distribute the force such that the impact is not so great on your joints, particularly the down-chain joints like feet, ankles, and yes knees. I will have to see if I can find the article.
Tested out a Gold's AMP Interval run today after my warmup walk/run to the trail. It had too much walking so I used the walks for a slow recovery pace and the runs to push my pace. It was fun! Enjoyed the cooler mid-70's temps too!

I don't like pace groups. I definitely do negative splits in races so I tend to start out slow. Pace groups tend to start at the pace they promise (like 10 min miles or whatever) and try to hold it the whole way. I've caught up with them & ran a bit before pulling ahead before. It must work for more people because they are popular. Just not for me.4

Yesterday was Global Trail Running Day so I took a short drive to a trail around a small lake near my house. They call it a lake, but it's more like a large pond. But, it's scenic and the cool (68 F!!!!) weather made for a really pleasant run.10 -

I have never stayed with a pace group either, but I've used them as a gauge in races - whether I catch up to one or trying not to be passed by one. I don't really like trying to race "together" like that.

Another beautiful morning. I met a friend at the pretty civilized time of 8:30 and had a nice loop around the lakes.
Oh, quick update that my other friend (well, not my only other one, but not the same one from today ) ran her trail HM yesterday and she was about an hour over her ambitious time goal, but a lot of it was because she got lost for about 20 minutes due to a course change/poor marking. I felt terrible for her but she was in good spirits last night when we went out to celebrate. I think she was getting over her disappointment and was focusing on her accomplishment of pushing hard the whole time and finishing a tough trail race (her first ever race other than one 5k and Spartan races). I'm really proud of her. It also made me miss racing to hear her talk about it, just like reading the race reports here.
In a facebook group I'm in from my run club we're talking about struggling with getting runs/mileage in right now. I decided I need to plan ahead where and when I'm going to run for the week, because taking it day by day is leading to some very short runs for me. So this week I have Monday through Thursday runs planned, and a tentative for Friday. I don't have a mileage goal for these runs, but I do have a plan for time and place. Bonus - the forecast looks fabulous for the week.8 -

We got a break in our weather here, Saturday morning was glorious. Last Saturday in the heat and humidity I ran 5k as a race and it was nearly 32 minutes, this Saturday with the cooler weather I ran the same route as a tempo run in 29:27. All I needed was some decent weather!
My bad knee was feeling great, did some lifting and now it’s doing a thing with the muscle attachment at the back of my knee. Didn’t lift particularly heavy, was careful with form, nothing hurt at the time, but now it feels like I tweaked it. Hoping it will be okay after a night’s rest.8 -

I posted in my update that my eRace for Racism team had around 6 miles left to finish. Well my partner Tammi went out for her planned 3 mile run but seeing that we were so close, she just had to run 6! So we finished our 200 mile relay in 37 days and 10 days early!
Tomorrow I start the Womxn Run The Vote virtual relay, 680 miles from Atlanta, Georgia to Washington, DC,. I am very excited to run in the relay, learn about Civil Rights historic sites and people along the way and help raise money to enable voters in marginalized areas!

I've still been falling behind and unable to keep up with this, but going to post my updated miles for Sept. Today, I went out for a trail run - something I haven't done for too long. It was super super slow and included lots of hills, but I enjoyed it and that makes it ok. This was in a popular state forest and the area where I started was very crowded as is common on weekends since it is pretty close to a major city. I ended up switching off to another trail where I saw nobody else until I continued past a paved road (not open to vehicles). Even then, it was sparsely populated compared to the first trail. The only problem was that I thought I was going the other direction on that last trail. In that case, I would come back to the trail I started with and then could take that back to my car. But since I was going a different direction than I thought, I ended up as far away from my car as possible and at the edge of the forest. My plan was 6-7 miles and I was at just under 6 miles at this point. Looking at the map, it seemed a bit shorter and easier to go back via road, which is what I did. Total ended up at 10.39 miles for the day. I'll know better next time.
Also, when I set out from my car, a couple hikers told me there was a man missing from one of the campgrounds. I asked how old and they told me 77, which adds some other obvious thoughts and concerns. While running, I noticed a plane flying low. When I came out of the woods back onto the road, a Sheriff stopped me. I told him where I had been and that I hadn't seen the man, who he said is 75. He had a photo and more information of course... as I continued along roads, I saw lots more Sheriff's, park rangers, and other volunteers in vehicles, on ATV's, and on foot (some of whom had dogs). They were all over the place along the roads. Anyway, I hope the man is alright. Being out all night last night is not good as it got down into the 60's fahrenheit. I realize most may not think that is very cold, which is exactly part of why it is such a risk for hypothermia. People go outside during daylight when it is 70's and are not planning to still be outside after dark when it is colder can quickly end up in trouble.

Got out to do my long run this morning at 8:00. It was 50°F! It was actually a little chilly to start out, but turned out to be pretty much perfect running weather - slight breeze and sunny to boot. I ran out my rural road today, so was a easier and faster than doing driveway laps. I did run by the sheep dogs today....and they were near the road. The little one that I am afraid of wasn't there, so I think he may have gotten rid of her. There was a smaller dog, but it was big enough that I wasn't afraid it could find it's way through the fence. Since they were there, I didn't want to have to run by them 4 times, so I ran out to my 2 mile turn around point and then, on the way back, turned around before I got to them and went back to the farthest point and then back again. I sprinted past them on the way back, so got my fastest pace there (8:23 min/mile).
I ran 8 miles and walked one. It felt good - not quite as good as last weeks 10 miler, but still good. I try to make my last mile my fastest one and succeeded today with it being 10:51 min.
And, I got another PR for a 10K - doing an easy pace! (1:10:58) I was almost 1 minute faster than I was on Sept 7, when I got my last PR for that distance.
Then, this afternoon, I went and played tennis. I think I'm crazy. My friend was amazed that I could still move after doing 9 miles this morning.
Also 11/20 miles walked.

Still no run. Lifted last night. I'm fairly sure my trainer is on his way to accomplishing something, but the process is currently neither nice nor pretty.
Unrelated to fitness:Work is trying to kill me. Spent 20 hours in the office over the weekend and three more with my boss at a random coffee shop hashing out the details of an upcoming project in November. Quaking in my Asics just thinking about the next two months.
My best friend's almost 3 month old baby has caught bronchitis. Spent the night sitting up with her via facetime and offering moral support while she stressed and worried. What can I say, insomnia has its utilities. Finally signed off at 5am and thought about going for a run, but got up for water and noticed my hands shaking and my HR at about double its usual resting number. Decided that running would be tempting fate and went to bed for some sleep before heading to work. Not a big success. At work now again. Hoping for a quick two months.12 -

I am on coffee # 1 and feel basically normal, thank God! Tomorrow, it will have been two weeks since my exposure- I think.

The Aravaipa challenge starts today: 172k in six days. I did the math. 106.88 miles this week. I am grateful for all the challenges I signed up for - i might actually get to 2020 miles on my own this year!
Don’t know how the knee is doing, as I haven’t done anything yet today. But today is only 7k, just over four miles. Surely I can manage that, right?
I always write about the poetry of journaling and running on my social media because I want it to be shared and I’ve been worried what work people will say if I write about this challenge. Frustrating that I can run 100% alone and still be concerned about getting crap at work for it.

5 miles this morning. Temp was great for shorts and short-sleeve tech shirt at 42F. I ran with a friend who hasn't been running much since the pandemic hit so we took it slow and easy. Since I was getting ready at the gym I decided to lift a few weights before I showered and got ready for work.4

@katharmonic I hate when I course isn’t marked well. I ran a 5K trail race last year that ended up being over 6 miles and I came to the finish from the opposite direction as everyone else. Ha ha

@noblsheep what a weekend, I’m glad you were able to be there for your friend, I hope her baby is well soon. I can relate to work, can you believe I put 2 hours of vacation on my timecard each week because I’m at the CAP they allow you to carry and I don’t want to lose the 3 hours I accrue each week, then I’m actually work 45 – 50 hours a week. I decided come hell or high water I’m going to see Skip. On my project they thought they would make our software releases smaller and more frequent, okay so my team (the testers) have NO breaks in between testing. We literally are testing for the next 2 years. So stupid.

I AR'ed a few soccer games yesterday since my ankle was feeling much better and my watch recorded 2.5mi by the time the two games were over. I had to be extra cautious about the turn and sprints, but overall it held up extremely well and isn't even sore today! No more pain at all and full range of motion is back. Not sure if the reffing "counts" for running or not, but I dont have a lot of hope to make the numbers this month anyway, so I'm adding it to my total. I am going to go for a very slow run today, so I'll update either later tonight or tomorrow with that distance.
