What nobody tells you about losing weight

When I stick to tracking ALL food and cut out the goodies, I lost weight and WOW felt much better. Now trying to stick to the exercise and tracking all is a bigger challenge with COVID 19 and being home more.....I can do it and am working hard for success and anxious to get to goal and maintain......Determination and FOCUS on healthier habits is a must.14

How angry I would become about large portions of my past life.
I grew up and lived most of my adult life in a world where everything was an immense effort; people were basically unfriendly and unhelpful, and getting decent healthcare required me to do a lot of research and advocacy.
Now things just fall into my lap. People can't do enough to be helpful. And I'm suddenly furiously aware of quite how much of what I suffered through and missed out on was due to prejudice.38 -

when in shape I'm no God's gift to women but they sure check out what I got in my shopping cart at the grocery store, ha ha18

That you make healthy meals for yourself and your partners, and when you tell your partner what you made, the person she's talking to on Discord calls her names for eating something delicious in front of them. (Sweet and Sour Pork and rice and vegetables, 400 calories, homemade. Sauce is sugarfree.)8

It might be my imagination but now I am in the 12 stones, so still over-weight but nothing like my 20 stone plus start, people I do not know are more friendly towards me.
Cars wait for me to cross the road, the guy that came to service my gas boiler was very chatty where as last year he hardly said two words, and people give me a friendly smile when I catch their eye rather than look away.
I know people in general do not think well of the obese but the change I am sure is not a subtle one.
Just reading back through this thread before I hit "post" and I see a few other people saying something similar.
I always knew at work I was looked down on for being so fat, missing out on opportunities that just based on ability should have come my way, but I never realised how.... hostile? is that too strong a word? some people are towards the very large.24 -
I lost about 40 kg while working in a large hospital. I had a logistics job so i would work everywhere in the hospital, kinda everyone knew me there.
The amount of people who straight up asked me if I had bariatric surgery where baffling. Why did people have to asume i needed surgery.

Yes. I’ve experienced this too. I can count on one hand the number of times a man would hold the door open for me and let me go through first when I was fat. Now that I’m skinny, doors are opening left and right and men take second glances.
Part of that is because I’m exuding more confidence in my appearance and I’m dressing that way as well. But mostly, I think people just looked past me as the fat girl.

It’s weird, but I was uniformly ignored and looked past in public when I was young and thin, but now that I’m older and fatter, people are so very much nicer. In particular young men who before never gave me the time of day, are so respectful and smile sweetly at me! I’m consistently shocked! The same is true for my sister. We were hypothesizing that maybe it’s because we look very much like mothers and dress a little old fashionedly since we have strange shapes and that’s all that fits.
In any case, it’s very heartwarming. I’m not used to so much respect. That’s the upside to not being pretty. Since there’s no beauty to lose, I don’t fear aging, and even people has gotten nicer!17 -
My face is showing lines that had previously been smoothed out on my chubby face.19

Most of the changes you made to lose the weight will need to be life long changes. Eating better, exercising, etc. This is not just a "do all the things to get to goal and then go back to old ways" thing, it is a lifestyle change that you need to accept and learn to love.14

This is especially important for me right now- at times I think "when I lose the weight everything can go back to normal" but then I have to remind myself I'm only 20 years old and I can make this my new normal17 -

Oh I HATE the tiny jeans pockets. so useless!
My body reacts differently now to my cycle. it sneaks up on me because I don't get the achy breasts or the crampiness I used to. I still get the bloating and the PMS just on a much smaller scale. So I really gotta pay attention to my calendar and had to install an app on my phone for reminders that its coming because a couple of my cycles started and I didnt feel Any of the "warning" signs of the cramps, bloat, etc..
I went skiing today . 1st day of the season. 20 lbs lighter than the end of last season. Wow that threw me for a loop. On top of being rusty from the 7 month break, I was so off balance and awkward. It was like re learning how to ski. by the end I had adjusted and was skiing like 'normal' again. The nice part was my thighs and knees didn't ache afterwards like they used to!!
I can't wait to go skiing down 60 lbs from last season...I couldn't possibly be worse than I was then! lol9 -
One thing I've learned, it's far more important to have good systems rather than good goals. A good goal is "I'm going to walk 7 miles everyday!" A system is having only one or two fairly effortless decision points to get you to do that walk. Like, having a partner who'll keep you accountable at 8 am; having your clothing and shoes laid out the night before to put on when you're ready to leave. I have this discussion with people in my life all the time- they see commitment to a habit as infringing on their freedom.28

For downhill skiing please don't neglect to have your bindings adjusted after significant weightloss. They will keep protecting you from injury that way.9 -

This is very important advice. My friend who's been on ski patrol for years didn't think of it and was off her leg for many months after some surgery to fix what she broke. Of course if you use telemark skis like I do, you're kind of hosed either way since they do not release.3 -

Ha! I know exactly what you mean! I'm 51 and I often get the cautious "is everything ok?"10 -
When you reach goal weight, you won't necessarily look like you thought you would. I'm three pounds under goal, and although my arms and chest look about how I imagined, I still have room for improvement in the stomach area. I feel great, though, and I'm losing weight that I officially gained as a teenager.26

pretty proud of this, but I am posting it to show you that progress is not a straight line but made up of peaks and valleys, so just keep on keeping on

One change I've noticed is fitting in smaller spaces. Normally, I won't dare squeeze into a middle seat, or a crowded elevator.
Trying to walk around a crowded room is less embarrassing. I don't feel as though I'm going to knock people over.25
