Hey guys, kinda missed the last few days.been busy!
I had a very odd weekend. It was a great weekend but odd.
I was in call the whole weekend, and usually get at least 1, if not 2, calls per night. I woke Saturday morning surprised at no calls but kinda happy, because it was a busy day due to birthday activities. Then I woke Sunday morning, no calls, and thought wow what are the odds. Then this morning I woke at 4am, lay there wondering what the heck was going on! Kinda dozed for an hr or so, then at 525am the phone finally rang! And because that call was before 6am, I get most of the day off! I go in about 1515.
So because I was wide awake, I went for my first HM training run! It was only 3k, but feels great to be starting a plan. Fingers crossed I get across that finish line in Fabruary!7 -
martaindale wrote: »Can't help you with Canadian winters but I'm sure a few folks will have some advice! Welcome!!@Steph_135 - I am going to tag @juliet3455 hoping he will see this. He lives in Alberta and I am sure could help with your questions on cold weather running gear. Being in Southern California I am no help at all. There are many others here though who run in cold weather that can probably help too.
Thank you BOTH!1 -

Saturdays are usually speedwork for me and my husband, but since we raced on Thanksgiving we had planned in advance to go out to the trails on the far side of the Wolf River which are usually deserted. Well... we got there and couldn’t find a parking spot, because this:
Still, a couple dozen of people on horses seemed safer to be around than hundreds of people on foot at the park on the other side of the river! We parked catercorner in a wide part of the drive. Had to jump over a bunch of poops while running, does that count as “technical”? We encountered two large groups of riders, one which seemed to be a bunch of non-horsey folks on hired horses with a guide, and the other a very skilled bunch of riders with Western tack and beautiful horses, mostly fancy colored Western horses - one was the prettiest deep butterscotch shade of buckskin, two palominos, a couple paints and three different shades of roan, strawberry, bay roan, and blue! I grew up riding hunter/jumpers which are mostly plain colors, so it was fun to see them all. We stepped off the side of the trail for the skilled group, who were trotting, and the unskilled group, who were sort of walking mostly in a direction, pulled into a field while we ran past.
Despite the day being really beautiful my legs felt heavy and that “first mile is a lie” feeling never went away. Probably because the cat had something on his mind and kept waking me up all night. So we decided to take it easy, walk a lot, and just enjoy the fall colors. We also spotted a pair of woodpeckers, and what looked like a dodgeball with wings flew across the trail right in front of us. It was a wild turkey! I have seen them standing around but never seen one fly before.
Did 8 miles total, about 4 running miles.

Well, November is done here, well, my running for the month is. It was a quieter month mileage-wise thanks to having two half-marathons in there and the associated taper and recovery, but those races made it a pretty important month in terms of my running, especially with my much awaited PB. Tomorrow brings a new month, the official start of summer and my official start of the silly season - time to start decorating, baking, and singing Christmas songs. Can't wait.
Oh yeah, and I managed to run the year yesterday, and some. In kilometres though, because I'm not quite that crazy! Actually, edit that - I must have run the year sometime last month. There's an extra 200km in there I totally overlooked - it's only 2020, not 2220!

Congratulations on making your goal @Mari33a and @Kimbeers !
@Avidkeo That is odd, but good, that you didn't get call outs. I would have wondered if my phone was working or not. Yeah for your first HM training run! You've got this.
@rheddmobile Sounds like you had a nice day, even if the running part was harder than expected. Turkeys make a lot of noise when they fly, don't they? I love to watch experienced riders on horses. That was never something I did. Went on a ride for the first time a couple of years ago and, while it was fun, I wasn't confident and the horse knew it.
@ContraryMaryMary Congratulations on running the year! Awesome.

I ran 7 miles today🙂8
-
Did 3.2 mi yesterday.
Took it easy in an attempt to keep my heart rate down (successful)
Speed Demon was very excited to hit up one of our old spots.
Coach was happy that I was aware enough to notice his concern at my hr for the first run and adjust my effort accordingly.
The trail was stupid busy. Only 1 out of 8 groups of bikers announced themselves. Such a pet peeve.6 -
@mbaker566 Speed Demon is so happy. That looks like a great place to run. Glad you were successful in keeping your heart rate down.1

I ran 10 miles this morning. It was cold for me at 45°F feels like 40°F with 15 mph NNW winds, plus it was cloudy so not really my favorite running weather. But it ended up being a good run. I sort of ran my usual run backwards and I added in a loop at the cemetery just to change things up. Today's 10 got me to my goal of 100 miles with 105.86 for the month. Tomorrow is a rest day so that wraps up November for me. See y'all over in the December thread.

I'll have to post pics and more details tomorrow, but I did another hike today in the Adirondack mountains. Today's hike was "only" 8.5 hours so I didn't do my run during the hike, I waited until we got home and did my run at 8:30 pm, exhausted and sore but happy I was not wearing a pack or boots and spikes. I did my minimum 15 minutes to continue my streak (actually 16) and called it done.9 -
Welp, not quite going to make goal. I ended up with 84.1 miles of my 90 mile goal. If I were running my usual Monday speed work I would have made it! But I have to move things around this week to accommodate work. So those 6-ish miles are getting moved to Tuesday. Still the most miles I have ever run in a month!
I'll try to check in with the last few runs for November tomorrow, but if I miss them I'll see you in December!8 -
Hey MFP'ers - I would love to join you next month...
Does anyone know of great resources (ie websites or videos) that have tips for dressing and shoes/accessories for running outdoors in the icy Canadian winter months?
My suggestions... I won't give specific gear recommendations because I got my stuff cheap at Lidl and Decathlon and don't know what's available for you.
*Layers. You'll get better at knowing what you need for various temperatures with practice, but I use different combinations of base layers (anything from a technical-fabric vest/tank top to full-on cold weather "long underwear" stuff), long-sleeved shirts, frequently several pairs of running tights, jackets, gloves, hats, snood/buffs etc.
*Good socks are important, and in extremely low temperatures I've also put duct tape over the front of my running shoes (because they are made to let air in and that's not always good). If it's slushy-wet and really cold I may add baggies on my feet to try to keep them dry.
*For icy conditions, you can take an extra pair of shoes and turn them into "screw shoes" like this: http://skyrunner.com/screwshoe.htm
*Especially when you are getting used to your gear, do longer runs as loops or with planned stopping-off places where you can warm up if needed. You don't want to get stuck far away from home and getting too cold. It also doesn't hurt to have a dry hat with you.
*If it's also dark and you're running on roads, you'll need to think about visibility, whether that means lights or reflective gear.
Right now it's just starting to be around freezing here, and we've got our first snow of the season on the ground. I'll run with 2 pairs of running tights, tank top, long sleeved tech shirt, a jacket, light gloves that may end up in my pocket, a buff, mask and hat OR a buff folded up to cover my ears. One pair of socks is enough for now. When it gets colder, I'll switch to a ski jacket, insulated gloves,
and add another pair of tights.
I'm off to work, but if I think of anything else, I'll write later!5 -
Great job to everyone who met their monthly goals! I ran 2 miles Saturday following walking a little over 3 miles doing a “Clue” type game downtown. It uses a phone app to interview virtual witnesses so you can solve a mystery. There were about 40 teams, and we came in 3rd!
Yesterday, I ran 4.12 for my 40 minute “long, easy” run. Tonight I have hill repeats that I had moved from Friday. I have 4.3 miles left to meet goal, so I will try to get all of that in if I can get home on time and out to run before it gets too dark.7 -
RE: cold weather. I thought to add that I remember @PastorVincent used to have trouble with his hands, and would put hand warmers inside his gloves. Also you may find yourself adjusting (shortening) your stride for safety much like you do already when walking on ice. And if it's windy, it might help to put a thin layer of Vaseline (or lip gloss, whatever you have) on your cheeks. The Buff can go up over your mouth & nose if it's really cold, but may also freeze, giving you bada$$ runner points.
I did a treadmill speed workout today, 7x800m at HM pace with approximately 200m fast walking in between. It seemed to be about the right pace this time. I had to switch one of my shoes halfway through though. One of my feet is slightly bigger than the other and this pair of shoes is just a little too small. I suddenly had sharp pains in my toes that wouldn't stop until I got the shoe off of my foot. I just changed the one to an older pair (same brand, Asics) and ran in 2 different shoes. It seemed fine.

and if you use handwarmers...if you can can get them to stay on your wrist rather than your palm, you'll be warm faster-the skin is thinner and the veins are closer to the surface7

@kgirlhart That's not my favorite running weather either. Congrats on getting it done and making your goal for the month.
@katharmonic Looking forward to the hiking post. Glad you didn't have to run in your boots.
Congratulations on your highest mileage for a month @martaindale ! That's awesome.
@marisap2010 Great job on 3rd place in the Clue game. That sounds like fun.

Morning!
lots of running! 171 posts behind!
SO. MUCH. RUNNING. And lifting.
Back to work today - but it's a rest day for the body, thank God.
Ran and lifted Thursday, then an ultra Friday, short run Saturday, short Run Sunday --- got the house ready for Christmas! Woo hoo! Kids are getting excited and the Christmas shopping is in FULL SWING.
I got my Pastor Vincent medal too. Oh, man. The emotions.
@Tramboman I guess we just wait and see if somebody doesn't get theirs? I don't know why you would have gotten two! Cherish em!
Progress on the 100 miler: My crew backed out. Spoke to my brother (who is now my only crew) on Saturday morning. They are in the middle of a renovation of their house and can't house my kids and me, nor is there anyone to watch the kids, now. Since my "best friends," backed out. So what we are down to is: I go alone (without my kids) or I don't go at all.
So now I am sure you can imagine my silence the past few days here. After that call, I was so angry. So. So. So. Angry. I was BAWLING on the kitchen floor. The kids came to me to ask what was wrong and I could barely tell them. The whole point of them being there was to SEE their mother FINISH something SO hard. Because it's such an important lesson for them. And because nobody is ever at any of my races. I want my kids with me. Telling them I either don't go or they don't go was absolutely heartbreaking. My daughter is upset. My son says, "Mom, you HAVE to go! You CAN'T give up!"
I haven't done anything to Nick and Sophie. I can't understand why they would go through almost the entire planning process and then back out because of money and then still back out when I say I will pay for everything. We haven't had bad blood or a falling out.
So now where we're at with it is I guess I will go alone. And I may never speak to Nick and Sophie again because this isn't a small thing that they agreed to and then bailed on. This is a really big thing and now it very negatively impacts my kids. They are hurt too, now.
Better to keep the circle tiny. Sometimes we have to forgive from a distance.
I understand that this isn't for everybody. But the going through months of planning and bailing and very nearly ruining the entire thing at the last minute is not okay. Don't say you will do things and then not do them. This has created a huge burden for me to carry. It happened because I counted on people. Lesson learned.
I'm sure you can all sense my anger. I'm not even sorry.
Thanks for being a safe place for me to vent.10 -
Oh One More Thing:
I can't remember what I did last year that worked - I wasn't running at 4am so never had to deal with 20 degrees F.
Tomorrow is 27F at 4AM.
Indiana is going to be quite cold as well, in winter.
Recommendations for jackets, layers, etc? I think I have enough stuff to layer but do I need like a specific running jacket or will a thin pullover be enough?
Do I really need gloves? i hated gloves last year because my hands were hot and I couldn't use them.0 -

Goal reached! I was definitely challenged to reach my mileage goal this month but I’m the type that if I say I’m going to do it then if I can find a way, I will do it. Today made my 5th day in a row running. I know that’s normal for many of you but not for me. However, since I’ve been running every day since Thanksgiving I’m considering doing the annual Runner’s World streak…. This morning it was 46F (42F feel like) and drizzling rain. It was also dark and foggy. Although I had my waist light and a light on the bill of my cap it didn’t make much of an impression. For a moment I thought I must have forgotten to put my contact lense in – lol. I didn’t run into anything or trip so all is well.
@mbaker566 – It annoys me when bikers don’t announce themselves when passing too. I tend to be a bit of a smart mouth sometimes. A couple of months ago when running on a trail and one group of bikers didn’t announce themselves when passing, I mouthed off something like – thanks for calling out…. A little while down the trail we came upon the group that had stopped to take in scenery. As we approached, one thing was evident, I was the inconsiderate one. The bicyclists were using sign language to communicate with each other.
@tramboman – Our weather is changing today/tonight too. I also fear I will have to use the dreadmill this week.
Oh @Camaramandy I am so very sorry that people who committed to help with your run have let you down. (See @polskagirl01’s posts above about dressing for running cold weather – lots of good info).

Hi all. I was away for Thanksgiving and never logged in MFP to read the thread, I hope you all had a great Thanksgiving. I’m skimming through and trying to catch up, I’m only behind 99 posts.
I did my running for the most part while in Ohio, whoever said the Midwest was flat does not live in Mentor ha ha. My cousin sent out me with a course to run and when I got back I said I thought you like me LOL, but it was a lot of fun to run somewhere knew. One place I could see Lake Erie, it was so nice. I gotta tell you my cousin's 4 year old grandson wanted to run with Skip and I (well mostly Skip) so we took him. He ran most of a mile and of course had to race us. It was so much fun.
@mbaker566 Bob is amazing
Received my PastorVincent medal too when I returned, thank you.
@rheddmobile you are a beast in that picture
@HonuNui I don’t think you can beat that view on Thanksgiving day.
@eleanorhawkins it’s the little dogs that are feisty, what a mess good thing you had your heavy socks on – a German Shephard came running after me today, he was growling and carrying on got right to me and started to sniff, his poor owner came running and apologizing all over the place. She was with her young son doing something in the driveway. I was fine, he did start after me again when I started to run again and she was apologizing again. Ha ha
@WandaVaughn I’ll be praying for you on Wednesday
@Steph_135 I live in Alabama so like others not a lot of help, but we do have days when we drop to single digits F. Layers, layers, layers. Don’t dress too warm to start or you will get hot, sweat and freeze. Get a good base layer for top and bottom and go from there, wool socks. Again others in the cold climates can offer off specific brands that work best.
@Camaramandy648 sorry they bailed on you, I think that’s rude. I tend to start with gloves when it’s cold (mostly if it’s windy) and take them off after a couple of miles. It was 32F and windy and damp here today so I put on gloves and a headband. The headband was off at ½ mile and the gloves at 3 miles. I also wore capris and on top a lighter fleece full zip jacket with only a sports bra under it. I was warm in some places, but the wind was the North and West was freezing so I was glad to have the jacket through I was sweaty when I got home.
See you all in the December thread.

@Camaramandy648 So sorry your friends bailed on you and that you can't stay with your brother while there. That is so frustrating. I understand you anger. I know that you have already decided to go ahead with it, but did you consider just postponing to a better time when your kids could go and you could maybe get a bigger crew? That's not quitting or giving up, and it could be a lesson in how to regroup when things don't go as planned. I'm not trying to talk you into changing your mind, just wanting to make sure you considered other possibilities.
@Teresa502 Congratulations on making your November goal. You did great getting it done! I'm glad you didn't run into anything this morning.6 -
@skippygirlsmom @quilteryoyo @Teresa502 Thank you!
@quilteryoyo I can still stay with my brother. Just the kids can't go.
I wish we could change everything around, but it's set. We've already committed. I think what we're going to do is pin down some dates when I can bring the kids just for a visit so it isn't about running and they will still get to see their uncle and cousins etc.4 -

Oh I’m so sorry and frustrated for you @Camaramandy648! I am also a single parent and my kids haven’t been to either of my big races, I can understand totally why it was so important to have them there. Hugs.
Can’t add anything to the cold running discussion - I always get so hot running I never seem to need special gear. But I don’t think it gets quite as cold here as some of you deal with all winter!
I haven’t received my Pastor Vincent medal yet but I am in the UK so I’m guessing it will take a while. I don’t have many running medals but they all mean something special. Will be so nice to add ‘his’ one.
Scraped over the line this morning with 4 miles on the treadmill. See you in December! X

Do I really need gloves? i hated gloves last year because my hands were hot and I couldn't use them.
I use gloves because my fingers go numb easily (yay autoimmune issues!) But I pocket them once I warm up.
The coldest I've run in was 12 degrees. The key is layers. I can't have cold ears, hands or toes. So I always have a headband that covers my ears and gloves.
The core is the part you need to keep warm. So what I did was long sleeve shirt I can push sleeves up if needed, vest, then jacket. I usually end up removing the jacket. Never the vest though because I need to keep lungs warm.
I also use a gaitor to keep neck warm and pull up when I need to warm up my breath.5
