November 2020 Monthly Running Challenge

Got in my usual 5k trot behind Kroger while my husband shopped. Not going back until after Thanksgiving, it was scary in there! Huge crowds and not distancing.
I slipped on a banana peel while running! Like an old timey clown. Didn’t fall but skated along pretty good. Seriously who throws an entire half a banana in a whole banana peel on the sidewalk? It had shriveled and turned the same brown as the leaves, which is what I thought it was when I stepped on it. As a kid I always wondered, are banana peels really that slippery to step on? And the answer is, no, not really, but actual BANANAS hidden in the peel are!

Went to run after work today. It was supposed to be a threshold run with some 100m intervals at the end. I just didn't want to do it. But I wanted to run. So I went out with the goal of maintaining a slightly hard pace for at least 4 miles. I figured that was a good threshold run and I didn't have to do intervals!
This plan has some pretty long runs during the week and I just get tired. I don't know how some of you guys log this mileage month after month. I can do it for a few months as I train for my HM but I can't maintain it year round. I think some people are just built for a longer distance. I'm definitely more of a mid-distance runner. My happy distance is around 3 to 6 miles. But I still like the challenge of working up to a HM once a year.7 -

I wrote out a post this morning but it appears I lost it. My back is doing better today, thank you @quilteryoyo and @skippygirlsmom. I ran on the treadmill before strength training. At the end of training, we did some foam rolling which was really good. I'm going to try to incorporate that into my routine a few days a week. During the session my trainer was pointing out how my hip flexors seem to be especially tight so gave me a few things specifically for that.
Sorry not to comment more - or recreate the comments I had earlier - but I'm just home from work and I think I'm going straight to bed. Have a good night everyone. Catch up with you tomorrow.

I ran 6 miles again this morning. The temperature was nice, but I could have done without the 15 mph winds. I can't complain though. It was nice to get out and just run for a bit. Today wasn't quite as stressful at work so that was nice. I haven't had a chance to catch up on the thread yet, but I thought I would at least post my run.

I'm glad you didn't get hurt! They were so close to getting it in the grass too, where it could've at least broken down without being on the sidewalk. I'm ok with banana peels, apple cores IF you toss them in the brush off of the road where they can decompose and no one can see them.
What makes me mad is cleaning up litter in the woods and then coming back to find an empty chip bag in the middle of the path, and later an empty soda can, like the whole place is their personal trash can. I don't understand the mentality of people who can just throw their trash on the ground. Put it in your bag or whatever you used to carry the snacks into the woods, and carry it out!
I also wonder, if I cave and go back AGAIN with a trash bag and gloves, am I just enabling them, and will it just get worse because they'll see that their trash magically disappeared?5 -

Right. The council here went through a phase of putting litter bins all over the trails. People still dropped their crap on the floor 1 metre from the bins. WTF is wrong with you, people?5 -
One day I was driving and saw a guy throw a pizza box down a sewer/storm drain on the side of the road. It was in an area with shops, so there were garbage cans nearby that he could have easily accessed. Made me so angry.4
-
I can't understand the littering either. I heard that it takes 2 years or more for a banana peel to decompose so I will never toss one out in nature, or apple cores, etc. In hiking it gets drilled in to carry out what you carry in and we tried to pick up anything we saw that someone else had dropped. Mostly people are very good on the trails but sometimes it's shocking how people don't seem to care or think someone else will take care of it.5
-
@rheddmobile So glad you didn't fall, but I do have that cartoon picture of you in my head now. Makes me wonder if it wasn't a human who littered, but maybe some critter that dug a rotten banana out of the Kroger trash. I think most humans wouldn't just drop in on the sidewalk...unless it was a tiny human in a stroller and mom/dad didn't notice.
@martaindale You did great. Interestingly enough, when I don't want to run, I prefer to do intervals. It just seems to cut the run up which makes it easier for me to mentally do.
@katharmonic Glad your back is feeling better!
@kgirlhart Yeah for a nice run, especially in that wind. I don't do wind very well either.
@polskagirl01 I dislike those who litter too. Good for you for picking up the trash in the woods. I don't think you are enabling them because I really don't think they would notice.

According to the display in my car, the temperature this morning was a few degrees warmer than Wednesday morning but I ran by a lake so it felt colder.
@RunsOnEspresso – I’m running a little behind on my monthly goal mileage also but I’ve got a long weekend next week for Thanksgiving so I’m hoping to make up some ground then.
Happy Friday people!

Yay my girl is home from school until January, she hasn’t stopped talking since she got out of the car ha ha
Oh my gosh @rheddmobile that’s crazy I hate littering, what is wrong with people. My other is people who let their dogs crap and don’t clean it up. I cleaned up a huge pile in the middle of our street the other day, now it might have been a stray dog, but the lady up the street let’s her poop and leaves it so I’m sure it was here. I admit on the trail I’ll get a stick and flick it a few feet off, but on the roads I clean it all up.
@katharmonic glad the back is better

Skimmed.
Yay @tramboman! I had 57F at 4AM! It was great! Got to do strides too, which I love. Lifted and ran yesterday. Normally today I would run doubles but today is the day I drive to Texas.
I can't leave work for a bit then I have to handle arrangements with kids and their dad and the dog so I won't arrive in TX until 10:30pm at the earliest. I will be tired. But I will also sleep. And then I will wake up and go run a 10K in a foreign land and then sleep again and then come home.
I'm convincing myself that I'm not THAT tired and that this was a good idea - why I do the things I do. Adventure, I guess. Plus, you only get this one life, so eat up all the opportunities presented.
@skippygirlsmom yay for having your girl back!
@RunsOnEspresso I'd do a combo. That's just my two cents, though.6 -
Oh!
I did check in on @pastorvincent 's wife -
She and their son are doing well. She is working, which I don't think she did before. She loves her job. She says she is trying to juggle everything and learn to do things differently, but her words read as though she has peace - and a new normal. Keep her in your thoughts and prayers. Also. What a relief to know they didn't just keel over too.10 -
I went out twice today. 5k before work and 2 at lunch. I'll take the dog after work because I never know what she will be up for 🤣
I need 5 miles a day for the rest of the month. Should be easy. I have 2 Saturday long runs and the weeknof Thanksgiving off.5 -
Interesting on the banana peels. I throw them into brush, so never see them again, but maybe some animal could be eating them that shouldn't. Times when I've seen others' banana peels laying along the side of the road, they've broken down rather quickly... I don't remember ever seeing the same peel repeatedly, but I've never actually studied it. One website said to compost them by putting them in a bin with leaves, and that they'd be decomposed in 3-4 weeks. Maybe I should toss one into my rose bush and see what happens. Either way, apples are definitely native here, and in fact entire apples are currently rotting on the ground in many places (as are other native fruits depending on the season, and they all break down, even on the sidewalks under the trees). Maybe I'm just being overly defensive5

@Camaramandy648 good to hear Pastor Vincent’s wife and son are doing ok. She sounds like a strong lady - wishing them all the luck in the world.
I’m behind again after a week of long hours at work and various other childcare pressures. But I got out this morning in an eye-wateringly cold 2c for a 5 mile run. Then one of my comedy runs with the class of 5-6 year olds this morning. I keep forgetting to include these little runs but this morning I remembered to track it. Bless them they are still pretty slow, but they are developing a bit more stamina. Rather sweetly the tiniest girl in the class decided she wanted to stay by my side for the whole thing and kept going without walking or stopping! Pint-sized determination! Here’s a couple of pretty sunrise shots from icy London this morning. My reward for the pre-dawn start!
Hope all are well. Will have a good read and catch up this weekend x

With litter, I was all about tossing banana peels and apple cores and letting nature do it’s thing, but after a post about trail running and food scraps, I learned that here, all you’re doing is feeding the rats (not native here) and the Department of Conservation would really prefer it if you take all rubbish with you.6
