@katharmonic 365 days in a row running is freaking amazing! You are a beast!1

Just got this! The word "FINISHER" is sticking out to me. May we all keep the right goals in focus, and finish well7
-
I'm so, so sorry @quilteryoyo1

Thanks everyone. I just skimmed all of your posts. Congrats and hugs to all who need them.
Yes, tragically, dad passed away yesterday afternoon. I was so glad that mom and I were able to be there with him. He never was able to respond to us again after Monday evening, but I think he could hear and knew we were there. I did play my Southern Gospel running playlist for him a couple of times and once he raised up one hand and was keeping time to the music. He really loved Southern Gospel and singing bass. I imagine he is now singing in some heavenly quartet and enjoying having the deepest voice imaginable.
Mom and dad were married for 63 years and together for 66, ever since she was 18. It's going to be really hard on her, as they did everything together!
This picture was taken on Oct 14th. I love it because it shows dad's genuine smile. It was always hard to capture.
I'll try to check in, but not sure how much. I just wanted you all to know. You really are true friends and I love you all.

@quilteryoyo So very sorry about the passing of your dad. Sending you prayers of comfort.1

Oh, @quilteryoyo, how beautiful that you were able to spend the time with him and play the music he loved. I am just so sorry for you and your mom. 66 years together, wow. I don't have more words than saying I'm sorry and wish I could offer you a hug and some comfort.2

We've had 6 inches or so of snow overnight and will probably get a little more today. We are just north of the
line of much higher snowfall totals, which is kind of disappointing actually. As long as it's snowing, let's just go for it! I will not be saying this in a couple of months I'm sure.
Anyway, I had to be at the gym this morning for strength training anyway, so I did my run on the treadmill before and after that. At one point I was the only person on the gym floor which was very weird. It's not been very busy anyway but the weather was certainly keeping people away today. The drive was pretty terrible. After I finished my run I did some foam rolling and stretching. My hamstring seems pretty good. Just a little dull ache after a lot of use (like now). In fact I think I'll ice it while I'm thinking about it because that seems to be helping over the last few days as well.
Stay safe and warm those of you who are in the northeast and getting a lot of snow!3 -

I’m so, so sorry. Happy that he was still enjoying his music up until the end and that you were with him.
It’s so typical of you to take time to read everyone’s posts and think about us, even at a time like this. As someone very lazy myself who loses track of what happened to who and thinks up replies sometimes but doesn’t post them I really appreciate that you are the person who always notices and has something to say to everyone - you put so much thought and love into your comments and I want you to know that we see it and appreciate it. It’s so unfair that this happened to you and your family and I wish I could do something to make things better. Praying for the peace which passes understanding to be upon you and your mom, with much love. Please take all the time you need.11 -

I was too tired to post my run yesterday. It was an ok 3.2 mile run, but not a great run. It was cold at 30°F feels like 21°F and I had some niggles in my hip. It does seem to bother me most now when I have been sitting for long stretches which I do at work. It hasn't been hurting when I run, but I was aware of it yesterday. So I decided that today instead of running in the dark at 5 am when it was in the high 20's or low 30's I would wait until lunch. And if the hip felt ok today I would run then and if not I would either walk or even rest if I needed to. I am so glad I did. It was perfect running weather. Sunny and 55°F with very little wind. It was just lovely. I ended up running 3 miles and felt great. I even had an average pace of 9:50 which is fast for me. I have been taking my runs slow trying to be easy on my hip. I didn't intend to run fast today. But sometimes I feel rushed at lunch so I run faster. Plus I felt so good I couldn't help it. 😊 I really needed a run like that too because while my last few runs have been ok they haven't been great, and I have felt pretty discouraged ever since I had to cut my run short and take a week of from running. I have just felt like I would never be able to run fast or feel awesome while running.

@quilteryoyo I'm so, so sorry to hear that.
I'm not sure if this is the right time or place to talk about this - ignore me if it's not appropriate.
In traditional Chinese culture, there's this thing called a "happy funeral" (Xi Sang), that's specially reserved for elderly folks who have enjoyed a long life and have a big family. Since this was really rare in the old days, these events were a great festivity and people would come over from far and wide to be part of the celebration. In many places, the family would set up a feast and pay for a Chinese Opera group to come perform, because they thought that having a life like that was something to celebrate, even though they would be missed.
In certain places, there is also an old custom of giving out ceramic bowls to the guests. These bowls usually ended up being used by children, because it was thought that they would pass on happiness and longevity.15 -
@quilteryoyo: I am so sorry and hope that you and Mom can find joy in the memories of that long life. I love the description of the Chinese celebration from @noblsheep !4

@noblsheep - I love that celebration of a long life! What a wonderful way to honor a loved one.3

@noblsheep what a wonderful tradition. I took care of my grandmother the last year of her life, she lived to 92, and we sat for hours and just talked about her growing up what it was like and all the things she saw over the years. When she passed I remember thinking I hope I live such a long and wonderful life. Thank you for posting this.

@noblsheep that is a beautiful tradition.
The loss of someone we love is so hard. I too echo the sentiment of others that we all care about you @quilteryoyo because of how much you care about and think about and respond to everyone in this group. You are a lovely person and we could see the wonderful relationship you had with your parents. I lost my dad in 2005 and my sister in 2014 and I miss them every day and the losses seemed like something I'd never recover from. The grief is always there, but I think about this response to an internet comment that I read some time ago and feel like it captures it well: https://www.good.is/articles/best-comment-ever. Maybe it helps you or someone else too.

Another Friday long run. Quick summary:chilly and hilly. But done.
Slightly longer version: It was 20 degrees, and felt colder. We switch locations every other week to hit different sides of town and this week was the closer one to me, but the canal path we run on was covered with snow. We started that way but it was not good footing, soft and uneven from being walked on, so too hard on the ankles. We backtracked quickly and coach took us over to a neighborhood where there is a figure 8 kind of loop that he likes and the streets are not busy and pretty clear of snow/ice. I did not care for it because I was trailing behind the other runners due to trying not to irritate my hamstring on all the hills (which I did not bargain for today), and it was super boring to do endless loops. I stuck it out for about 50 minutes of this and then another runner was heading back so I went with her back to where we had parked. That got us to about 60 minutes and then I decided to just finish out a long run (90 minutes minimum per coach) on my own down and back on the flat kind of industrial road. The shoulders are not that wide on that road but it is not terribly busy and you can see a long ways ahead so I could always make a jump out of the way if traffic didn't move over enough. Which is important because the state highway and town snow plows headquarter off that road so there is some big scary plow traffic to avoid. All was well though and I got it done and checked off for the week.

Did my long run early this week since I was off work today and we have a busy day tomorrow. It was a good run. I was happy with my pace and didn't feel too beat when it was over. I'm definitely ready for race day. Next week is a bit of a light week and that works well since it's Christmas and we'll have family stuff going on.

@katharmonic Congratulations on your year long streak!
@noblsheep That's a beautiful tradition.
Today was a rest day so just yoga for me. But my hip has been really good today. I was a little nervous after I ran kind of fast yesterday that it would be too much, but I feel great today so I am definitely encouraged. I am still going to try to take it kind of easy since I am not training for anything specific at the moment and I just want to be able to run.7 -
Was planning on running my last 5k race of the year Saturday but it’s going to be rainy and the road we run is slick in the rain, so I don’t like running fast there when it’s wet. Sunday is supposed to be dry but chilly, I think we are doing it then, which will give us an extra rest day. Which I can use because my calf muscle is sore.
Sore calves always make me worry about blood clots but this feels exactly like the first few days of the time I ruptured my baker’s cyst, so unless blot clots feel exactly like ruptured baker’s cysts which would be really bad luck, I am thinking it’s the cyst. I ran with no knee brace behind Kroger and my knee is feeling a little spongy, so possibly the cyst has a slow leak. So far no swelling. When I ruptured it originally it didn’t swell at first, then on day 2 it blew up my whole lower leg. I’m hoping it’s not going to be a repeat of last time which basically took me out of running for six months. But I hope even more that it’s not a blood clot, which could kill me! And I am for sure not going near an ER right now to check. Read an article that TN is the worst per capita place for Covid in the entire world right now. Just going to the grocery and feed store has my husband terrified.
At least if it is the cyst I know what to do to minimize it this time - compression on lower leg, ice the knee, and take lots of aleve.
In addition to my little trot behind Kroger we ran 10k on the Greenline Wednesday. It was cold. I still don’t understand how people in places that get COLD cold manage to run. When I say it’s cold I mean Memphis cold, in the 30s. Running in the cold makes everything feel harder. My first mile felt like a ten minute mile and it was an eleven minute mile. The one upside to running in the cold here is that everyone in Memphis is an even bigger wussie than I am. We usually pass about twenty people on a 10k on the Greenline. We passed ONE other runner on our entire run and he made a big production of bowing and waving his hands in honor of our hardiness as we passed. We also passed a homeless dude on the way back to the car. He gestured at my husband and said, “Son, look at you freezing your *** out here on purpose.” Hoping he had somewhere to get in out of the cold.6 -
