Kilauea (currently erupting) is on the south end of Big Island, 50 miles as the crow flies from our house, and ash and flow go in the opposite direction from where we are (north end of island)....but there have been rumblings on Mauna Loa also (which last erupted in the early 1980's), which is more centrally located, and which triggered a 4.2 last week and rattled us pretty good.
Guy walks into a bar in New Orleans and says “give me a Corona and two hurricanes.” Bartender says “that’ll be 2020”.....just add an erupting volcano to the mix....14 -

What a few volcanoes thrown into the mix of 2020. Glad, though it's close, it's not affecting you. Stay safe.0 -
Checking in!
Skimmed.
It's almost Christmas!
Ran an ultra distance Saturday - fell pretty hard. A little rough around the edges but I mcgyvered a sling around the fifteenth mile and finished it that way and still got a PR.
I think I am basically fine.
I have darker skin so it's hard to tell what's bruised and what's not except I am pretty sure my tone is never green or purple. Also my butt. Oh lord. Not sure about the elbow but I've been running okay, just keeping it immobile.
Also got my 2020 in 2020 last week! I think I'm almost to 2100 now!
@quilteryoyo how are you? I have been thinking of you -
and all of the rest of you too. I hope you are all well. Miss being around. Life is so busy though. *Sigh* When will it slow down? When I do, maybe, haha.
@HonuNui - gorgeous!5 -
Not running at the moment but hopefully back to it Wednesday (long story). But on here to check in and sending biggest of hugs to @quilteryoyo. Also hoping all is ok @eleanorhawkins - completely understand your frustration.
We are in full Tier 4 lockdown for Christmas in London. I’m annoyed as I know lots of people are ignoring it and breaking the law. Meanwhile rates are scary high. Just trying to keep my head down, paint a smile on for my kids and look to a better year ahead. Fingers crossed still on track to make the 800 for the year x8 -

Yesterday’s 12 Day of Christmas assignment was to run 5 miles with the first 2 being at conversational pace, the third mile a little speedier, and the last 2 back at conversational pace. I met three friends to run in a neighborhood with beautiful Christmas decorations. The neighborhood route ended up being very hilly. We tried to speed up on mile 3 but I think mile 5 ended up being our fastest just because of the terrain. The lights though did not disappoint. They were beautiful.
As @mbaker566 (hope your hip is feeling better) mentioned, today’s 12 Days of Christmas challenge was to complete your run (any distance) before checking email or social media. Since I usually run first thing in the mornings, I wasn’t too tempted. Just got out the door around 7:00 am and ran 4 miles.
@camaramandy – Sorry about your fall and I hope you are mended quickly.
@Faebert – I thought about you today when I read about London’s lockdown in the news this morning. I just don't understand all the resistance to following rules that save people's lives!
@eleanorhawkins – I hope your family’s test results are all negative. Sorry you have to go through the testing. How did your daughter handle it?
Congratulations on your PR @rheddmobile!
More hugs going out to you and your mom @quilteryoyo!
To everyone - keep on keeping on!2 -
@Camaramandy648 😲 that is a ton of milage! Hope you heal up quickly!
8 miles this evening. Pretty good run for a Monday. Waited until after work so it would be warmer. But might have been a little too warm, 72F light wind 🥵
But not complaining.

Hey all.
Been sick the last week. So sick. Nasty viral illness (thankfully not That one). It took me so long to shake it. I managed a 3k run on Monday. Slow slow slow!
So no long run last Saturday, sigh. Oh well its no big deal.
We are having an extra Christmas this year as SIL came to visit early. It was great. But means the food side of Chris stretched out a whole week rather than just a few days.
I really can't complain though. Its lovely. Now I can breathe anyway.7 -
Thanks for the thoughts, hugs, etc. I'm reaching breaking point here and can't run it off. My daughter's test was arranged through the school system, she went yesterday and it was one of the quick ones. Negative result, 15 minutes later. She was in a state and it was uncomfortable but she survived. She is allowed out of isolation tomorrow as long as no symptoms show up, but today is the last day of term so she's happy she doesn't have to face the world until the 7th of January now.
Meanwhile, my husband and I have to go to a drive-through testing place this afternoon. Different system, possibly different test. They get sent to the hospital, then the results are sent to our GPs who will phone us with them. On the 28th!!!! And we're not allowed to set foot outside the apartment until we have a negative test result. So that will be 10 days locked up indoors, all because my MIL is stubborn and careless. I am so angry. I'm getting chest pains from the anxiety and frustration of it all. Spent most of last night trying to work out how to feed us all for 10 days with what I have in the cupboards or send a reluctant, panic-stricken kid to the supermarket.
Meanwhile my dad 1,500 miles away, after having a malignant brain tumour removed and 2 weeks into a 6 week cycle of radiotherapy with chemo planned after that, phoned me the other day to ask me if I thought he might have cancer because he just noticed he's being treated at an oncology hospital. WTF? I don't know if nobody bothered telling him, it went over his head, he didn't understand or he's just been in denial.
Oh yeah, and it's Christmas this week. Happy Christmas everyone!12 -

Oh you poor thing. How awful for you. Sending love, positive vibes and sunshine. I wish I could actually do something practical for you.1 -
@eleanorhawkins that is awful, I’m so sorry. You have so much to deal with right now. I really hope those results come through faster for you and that all is ok. Sending you lots of strength. X0
-
@eleanorhawkins ...and breathe! Your daughter is lucky to have a great Mum to look after her. The sad state is as a race we are surrounded by way too many selfish, idiotic, brain-dead, hypocritical, dumb-*kitten* morons and your MIL merely part of the majority that continue to drag us down as a species. We can't worry about their contribution because stupid can't be taught. You can and I'm sure will make a positive difference today and everyday and the more we focus on sending positivity the more chance we have to overturn the muppets. Stay awesome!
On my side no running as all the routes flooded or just a muddy bog for the last couple of weeks so out on the bike when I can.7 -

Thanks everyone for all of the support. I'll try to comment more later. Mom and I, and my brother, are doing as well as can be expected. Mom is actually doing a lot better than I expected she would. I'm not sure it has totally hit her yet.
@eleanorhawkins I am so sorry that you are having to go through all of this. I do want to caution you though that the rapid test, at least here in the United States, is not very accurate. When we got ours we were told if we were showing symptoms and it showed positive, we definitely had it. If we tested negative, it didn't mean we were negative. I have heard anywhere from 60% - 80% false negatives with the test. I'm sure your daughter isn't going to be out and about without you anyway. Just wanted you to know. The other test is a lot more accurate. I really hope you all stay well and don't have it. My heart goes out to you and I wish I could bring you some food. Will your grocery stores deliver? Order takeout delivery? Friends bring things over and leave at the door? I will be praying for you. I can't imagine not being able to get out of your apartment for days. I'm so lucky to live on a farm where, even in quarantine, I could be out and about.
@Avidkeo I'm glad you are feeling better and didn't have IT. Hope you continue to heal.
I have skimmed all of the posts. I will try to comment more later. You guys are the best!

When I was looking at the Great Conjunction last night, I was thinking about @PastorVincent and how I would love to see the pictures he would have taken. I was able to see it, but no pictures as the trees blowing in the breeze kept getting in the way.12

I ran 5 miles this morning. It was a good run. I feel like my hip is finally better. It was a little cooler than I usually like, but it was a pretty and clear morning and there were lots of stars. I thought I might need a jacket, but I couldn't find my running jacket so I just wore sleeves and I was really perfectly dressed. I really was only planning 4 miles, but I was enjoying mysel so much I didn't turn around soon enough. I felt like I could run forever, but I had to get ready for work. It was nice to have a good run. And I made it to my revised goal. I won't make my original goal, but resting the hip was more important so I am still pleased.
@eleanorhawkins I am so sorry for all you are going through.
@quilteryoyo I'm glad your mom is doing ok. And glad you got the surgery scheduled.
2020 races:
11/7/20: Run for 57th AHC Half Marathon6 -
Oh, @eleanorhawkins I'm so sorry for what you're dealing with. I hope you all are negative and stay healthy. Please ask for help from people, I'm sure there must be someone who can pick up some food and deliver? I can imagine how anxious the whole thing would make you feel. Sad to hear about your dad not understanding his diagnosis, I wonder if he doesn't remember being told? In any case, hugs to you.
@quilteryoyo glad to see you stop by and that you are all holding up ok for the most part. I hope things proceed smoothly towards your new scheduled surgery date now. More hugs to you too. Oh, and I'm glad you got to see the Great Conjuction, we had clouds here so no chance. Yes I can imagine PastorVincent sharing some photos of that.
@Faebert sorry about the lockdown there, it is so scary that's where things are again. But yet the vaccines are starting to roll out, so it's hard to know how this is all going to play out over the next months.
@avidkeo glad you are feeling better.
@rheddmobile I know I thought it, but I don't think I said congratulations on your last 5k of the year, with a PR! Yes, for sure this was not the year that any of us planned for racing or much of anything else. I hope that 2021 will see some happier things for everyone.
@polskagirl01 I think I missed that you are moving? Sorry about a stressful search for housing right now and I hope it works out quickly.
I keep getting lost in the thread so I'm sorry not to comment on everyone's updates. Thinking of you all.

Another treadmill run today. I forgot my watch so had to just rely on the treadmill data. I did 1.5 miles before yoga and then decided I should do a little more after. I ended up doing 3 more miles by talking myself into running for just one more song a few times. Hamstring seems to be pretty well recovered, thankfully.8 -
I learned a vital running lesson this week: if you decide to skip a scheduled 7km tempo test because it’s hot and humid and you’ve been super busy with school things and Christmas things and work deadlines and generally can’t be arsed as a result, your sadistic coach will simply reschedule it for three days later!
The test was supposed to be Saturday, and I did want to run, just not fast (tempo is not race pace, but a steady fast pace that you can maintain for a good amount of time). Instead I went for a longer aerobic (able to chat pace) run - 1:25 (14.5k) completely forgetting that Sunday is long run day so had to do 1:30 (15.3k) again the next day. I got Monday off but the dratted tempo test reappeared in my schedule for yesterday. I thought I best just do it and get it over with, even though I still didn’t really want to.
Unfortunately, my husband had to go to work early, and as it’s school holidays, that meant I couldn’t run in the cool of the morning. I didn’t want to run in the heat and sunshine when he got home at two, so headed out at 6:30pm. It was still pretty warm and really humid but there was good cloud cover so it wasn’t too bad.
The run comprised 15 mins warm up, 7km at tempo pace, then 15 minutes cool down for a 12km total in 66 minutes. The tempo part was hard. And slow. But no surprises there.
Today was another 1:30 aerobic run and because we were heading away on holiday mid-morning, I went out at 6:30am. Two runs of this size 12 hours apart was hard mentally (I consequently cut it 10 minutes short but still clocked up 13k.) Legs were much better than expected, and there’s probably another lesson in there somewhere.
I’m now cosied up in a bach (holiday house) at Waihi Beach (a tiny town, unsurprisingly, on the beach). I have yet another hour’s run tomorrow but I’m really looking forward to it - it’s nice to be somewhere different. At the beach. On holiday.
Happily, evil trainer has scheduled a rest day on Christmas Day, which I will duly spend replenishing all those spent carbs with champagne and trifle.12 -
katharmonic wrote: »@polskagirl01 I think I missed that you are moving? Sorry about a stressful search for housing right now and I hope it works out quickly.
I had planned a long run, but it didn't take long to realize that just wasn't happening today. Combined travel stress, lack of sleep, etc resulted in the 5k I did being half running, half hiking through the woods. Just getting some movement and time outside was perfect for today.8 -
@ContraryMaryMary enjoy your holiday! Love running somewhere new, especially with a beach! Post some pics so we can live vicariously on a warm beach with you.
@polskagirl01 so fantastic that you found something perfect, what a huge load off before Christmas and the new year. Enjoy your holiday and then your new place!
I'm feeling pretty mixed about the holiday. I'm happy to take some time away from work responsibilities for sure. It's funny because every year I stress about not really wanting to travel to visit family at the holidays and this year I would sure do it if I could. I have no real plans or anything for Christmas or new year's, but I hope to do a couple of fun things at some point - one of them being to take my first downhill skiing lesson! I skiied one time in high school which I think went pretty terribly so I'm really nervous but excited.
On today's agenda though - making my own salted caramel vodka7 -
@katharmonic that sounds good. i hope to make some ginger pear jam and maybe some coffee syrup to use as gifts.
i missed yesterday's run. and i was planning on running this morning. but it was thundering. speed demon doesn't do thunder. so we didn't go. which is good because there was a robbery/shooting where we would have been running at the time of our run. 2 people were shot. kinda thankful for the cruddy weather.9 -
@kgirlhart Glad you had such a nice run!
@rheddmobile Congratulations on your PR for the 5K. That's fantastic.
@katharmonic Great run. When I run on the treadmill, I always rely on it for the distance, but my Garmin for calories burned. Enjoy your skiing lesson. I haven't skied in years, but really enjoyed it when I did.
@ContraryMaryMary Wow! That's a lot of running. So glad your coach is giving you Christmas Day off. Isn't that special. Enjoy your vacation at the beach!
Congratulations on finding the perfect house @polskagirl01 !
@mbaker566 Wow! Glad you didn't go. That could have been disastrous! I hope those who were shot are okay.
Not sure what Christmas is going to bring here. Mom and I were planning to go to my niece's for our family Christmas, but if the weather prediction is accurate, we won't be going anywhere. They are calling for rain Thursday, with falling temperatures, turning into snow and a low of around 12°F. That will mean a layer of ice with about 3 inches of snow on top. If that happens, I am going to try to walk to her house so she/we won't have to spend the entire day alone. Normally, I would be excited about a white Christmas. But, not this!9 -

Mostly cloudy, mid 30s F, and a good breeze from the south. Hate running in the wind ALMOST as much as I hate intervals -- not that I've run any intervals lately.
@quilteryoyo Not sure if you're sharing your weather with us or we're sharing our weather with you, but either way, it's not good weather. Don't know if I mentioned it, but my older daughter lives in Murfreesboro.
@polskagirl01 Happy you were able to remove a significant stressor before the holidays.

Falling off my running at bit, back in the office, so back to 4 am wake ups to run, but my knees have been hurting, sore. I know it’s tendinitis because Skip has had it before. I finished my Yuletide challenge so I figured the next week or so I’ll back off alitte and give them some rest and love.
@Faebert sorry about the lockdown. Try to enjoy your holiday, it’s very scary.
@Avidkeo glad you are feeling better, sorry it took so long to shake it.
@eleanorhawkins wow when it rain it pours huh? I just can’t tell you how sorry I am with everything that you have going on. Your poor dad what the hell. Do you have a home delivery service you can use for shopping? I know it’s not ideal but might help. Hang in there, I know it’s easy for me to say. Hugs.
@quilteryoyo you are always in my thoughts. Glad your surgery is back on.
Great job on the yearly mileage @kgirlhart – you made me to look at mine. I’m at 1,172 for the year which I’m really proud of since the first 3 months I ran like 60 total.
@polskagirl01 moving is without a doubt one of the most stressful things you have to do. Is it very expensive to live there?
@ContraryMaryMary ha ha mean coach.
@katharmonic funny you said that, it’s so true, now that you can’t go you want to go. Last year we spent Christmas just Skip and I in New Orleans and it was great.
OMG @mbaker566 everything happens for a reason right. Glad you were home and safe
I don’t know if I told you all a sex offender moved on the next street. I run passed his house every day. Turns out Skip knows him, ugh, he was the resource (cop) officer at her school. OMG just give him access to the kids. He actually had a “consensual” relationship with the high school girl (just no!) but when that came out, relatives came out and his had abused younger children in the family WTF! Anyway the other day it looked like things were gone off the front porch and I thought I wonder if he’s moving. He did. The killer is when he got out of jail he moved in with a woman with 3 young kids. WTF woman!

50 posts behind, but I got caught up!
@quilteryoyo It's been such a hard few weeks for you guys. I hope your family is feeling ok and I'm glad to hear you got a new surgery date.
@rheddmobile Great race and PR even in the slippery conditions.
@polskagirl01 So glad to see you found a new place! This time of year is hard to get anything done, even moreso this year with holidays plus COVID.
@Camaramandy648 ouch! Hope you heal up quickly.
@shorkster You're doing great!
@kgirlhart Glad your hip is feeling better
@Teresa502 Congrats on your AG finish! Re: the bonk run. What exactly is the point of doing that on purpose? Did the challenge give any insight into why you would do that to yourself?
@eleanorhawkins I'm so sorry to hear about your family struggles. This year sucks. Unfortunately so many people fall into this trap of thinking people they know are ok/safe and then the people around them end up paying the price. I'm hoping you and your husband test negative and the rest of your family recovers ok.3 -
@Tramboman I did not know that your daughter lives in Murfreesboro. That's cool. Yeah, the weather is going to stink I'm afraid.
@skippygirlsmom That's scary about the sex offender. I'm glad he's moving. I don't know what women think whey they let someone like that move in with them and their children. I guess they believe his story when he says he either didn't do it, it was consensual, or that he won't do it again. It's sad all the way around.
