@martaindale I'm glad you had a much better run today!
@polskagirl01 Glad the furnace is working. I hope your tummy feels better. It probably is just the stress of moving. I know my system gets messed up easily when things change and I'm stressed. Glad the kids are doing well in their new school AND that you found someplace to do speedwork! Hang in there. Moving is hard.eleanorhawkins wrote: »I'm having a lot of, umm, female issues atm which, although I'm only 43, seem to be pointing to perimenopause. Love the shoe porn @TheMrWobbly ! I'd love to find some women's shoes in that color.1 -
I did three distinct mile walks today. The first was to put the letter to the IRS in the mailbox. The second was to walk to my mom's and visit with the friends who stayed with her while I was having surgery, and the third, after helping her get firewood on the porch, was walking home. Each of those walks required adding some to the final destination to make the distance. With the slow half mile with mom included, I intentionally walked 3 miles in 55:28 minutes for a 3.2 mph pace. The mile I walked to my mom's was 3.9 mph. I'm pleased with that one.
I did learn something today. Thursday the nurse and I had talked about bras to wear. She said some women find that they feel a pull, so a soft supportive bra helps. I told her I wasn't big enough to worry about that, but... The surgeon closed my incision with that glue stuff, not staples or stitches. I'm really glad he did. But, I think that was holding everything in place, because now that most of it has come off, I did feel pulling on the suture during my first walk today. I wore a bra for the other two miles and it felt a lot better.
Life stuff below:I spent about an hour this morning writing up the letter to the IRS. I wanted to let them know exactly what had happened, so included dates and the agent identification numbers of the people I had talked to. I tried to be very civil, but did throw in a couple of digs, like: "After looking into it, she indicated that you had indeed received and cashed the check, but because my late husband’s name was still on the check and I didn’t include my full SS# on the check (even though I did include the payment stub with all of my information on it) it had been placed in the pending file." and "She said she would put a hold on my account (should have been done in August) so that they wouldn’t send out any more notices." My final paragraph was "I do hope this resolves the issue and that you will look into your phone system. It should NOT take 12 calls over multiple days/weeks AND then having to ask for help for a different topic in order to reach an agent. Also, a note should have been placed on my account in August, alerting the system that the taxes had indeed been paid, eliminating all of this confusion."
Then, I called the credit card company that had charged me a late fee. They had received the payment 2 days past the due date, but I had mailed it a few days before. Once I pushed the right buttons, their automated system asked if I wanted them to waive the late fee? YES. So it was all taken care of without having to talk to a human.10 -

Best laid plans and all that - I had so many good intentions today, and achieved very little of it. I did get to yoga and strength class this morning, which my already sore legs found quite a challenge. I did not run beforehand as I usually try to do, which was a mistake. Right after I got home it started snowing pretty hard. I went to work and forgot my laptop which made the whole purpose of going to work pretty irrelevant, so I stayed for one zoom meeting and then went back home. I planned to meet up with a friend for a late afternoon run, which was not looking very pleasant with the snow and cold, and then she had to cancel. I finally went out and braved it on the trails near my house. That was very tough going. The new snow was soft and felt like running in sand. My sore legs and ankles were not at all happy. I turned around at a little less than a mile and headed back out. I needed to go pick up my dog from daycare (because I had planned to be at work getting things done all day) so I cut it short. At least the dog did not need a walk on top of that, as she is worn out from playing hard all day. I need to do some more work yet tonight or I'll be very sorry tomorrow, so I'm going to bribe myself with a little ice cream and try to get it done.
Not a great mileage week so far here, but should still make the 100 mile goal for the month.8 -
I just took a closer look at our RTW map. When we get to TN, we will actually be running within site of my house! I'll have to be sure to take some pictures that day to share.10

I have been using the site to take train “trips” recently, and have found them strangely motivating. Why not the world?

@quilteryoyo I just zoomed the RTW map all the way in and it actually has us running right through my work building! I don't think anyone wants a picture of that though so I'll make sure to take some scenic shots when we get to NZ9

I ran 5 miles this morning. It was cold but it was still an enjoyable run. I usually have a hard time knowing how to dress in winter, but I did good today. And I hit my goal for January. Hopefully tomorrow's run will be nice as well.
It has been crazy busy at work with year end stuff but I have been reading the thread and giving hugs and likes. Sometimes it is just hard to respond to everyone especially since I am on my phone a lot.

Thanks ladies, it IS nice to know I'm not alone. I keep trying to pluck up the courage to broach the subject with my doctor over the phone, ask him to send me for blood tests, but last time I did that (admittedly it was about 5 years ago and my only real symptom was crying a lot and feeling crap) he brushed it off and put me on antidepressants instead. I DID see that you can get stick tests from Amazon to check FSH levels, might order some of those.
@quilteryoyo my mother had breast cancer at 46 and was put on Tamoxifen for 5 years afterwards, during which she went through menopause without even noticing. She's never really mentioned much in the way of peri symptoms, and since I reached 40 'it's your age, dear' has pretty much been her standard answer to anything I complain about, physical or otherwise!

Hi all, I’ve been sticking to my plan of alternating running with strength training. Yesterday was a running day but the pavements near me were sheet ice so I was forced onto the treadmill. I decided to try and do some interval work on there and was pleased to manage to run some of it at a much faster pace than normal.
@quilteryoyo - glad all that life admin seems to be sorted out for you, well done for staying patient! Hang in there @polskagirl01 - sounds like things are settling. @martaindale and @eleanorhawkins Im 42 and reading with interest.... I definitely seem to take longer to recover from illness or injury or overtraining these days. And tiredness is constant. It would be good to know what is happening hormonally. I didn’t know about testing sticks on Amazon - good tip..
Love the Asics @TheMrWobbly. Enjoy!

I ran just a little over a mile on the treadmill before my body pump class last night. I’m trying out a pop-up kickboxing class tonight, but I hope it get in a mile before that too.6 -

@eleanorhawkins Don't you just hate the "it's your age" answer. I remember the first time the doctor said, "Well, at your age...." I wanted to sucker punch him. LOL If the symptoms are bothering you, I would talk to your doctor. My mom didn't have many of the typical symptoms. I on the other hand are still having hot flashes at times. Not as bad as they used to be, thankfully.

@martaindale and @eleanorhawkins I'm 59 now but went through menopause in mid 40s.
@avidkeo thanks for the healing vibes I'll take them
Took Macy for a walk yesterday on my scooter, downhill was fun she's a big girl and just pulled me. My friend was walking Champ and she was like you are going to tip over, nah if Macy pulled too hard I just let go of her leash ha ha. It was nice to "walk", we went about a 1/2 mile.
11 -
Hmmm my mum didn't really hit menopause till her 50s. Be just my luck that happens to me. Sigh. Be good to not have periods anymore!
On running, this is a hard week. I've been on the verge of a cold since the weekend, last night I thought it finally came through, but nope. I just feel run down and worn out.
This weeky plan calls for only a slight increase in last week, so Monday was a 5k recovery run, then an 8k wed and Fri (increase from 7k). Long run is 13k again, same as last week.
I'm only 4 weeks out from my HM! That makes me excited! I know ready.
Calf is good 99% of the time. I'm noticing some tightness at times, back to a bit tight when I first get up and walk that quickly eases. I think its a combination of increased ks and more hills - I'm adding more hills in. Just taking it a run at a time.6 -
@skippygirlsmom Glad you were able to get out for a walk! Fresh air is good for the soul.
@Avidkeo I'm excited with you for your HM! So glad your calf is better!
4 -
I walked to mom's, spent some time with her, and then walked home. I added distance to get in at least a mile each way. She walked from her house to my turn around point both times today. That means I was slower overall, but I am not worrying about it. Right now, it's time on my feet I'm more concerned with. Plus, I love that mom is walking almost every day and, she was a bit faster today, already. It's good for both of us to do this together. Total today was 2.25 miles in 44:46 minutes.
I am thinking that next month I won't count my walking time unless I am going at least 3.0 mph. With mom, it's around 2.2 - 2.5 mph. That will just mean an extra 0.5 - 1.0 mile per day for me. I can count that as warm up and cool down.6 -
@kirstymn I think seeing the building your work in would be interesting. Just saying.2
-
@quilteryoyo good for you and your mom for all the walking. You are doing great! 3 mph is a good clip for walking.
@avidkeo - 4 weeks to your HM is exciting. Glad you are doing well with the calf.
@Faebert good job with the strength training and running.
@kgirlhart good job on making your monthly goal already.
The RTW route goes pretty close to my house too. I'm excited to see everyone's pictures when we get there. Even if it's your office building we run through

I was feeling guilty for not running much yet this week and not doing any speedwork for a couple of weeks now. So I decided to do some on the treadmill at the gym to avoid trying to find a place with good footing to do it (or honestly, just bringing the outdoor clothing and accoutrements along with me to work). I don't know what the group speedwork assignment was from our coach this week, so I did the workout that I could talk myself into, which was 1 minute short intervals. One minute hard, one minute recovery "jog", repeated x 12. But I did 13 repeats because I screwed up my timer on my phone. Lucky 13. I did the last two intervals at a faster pace than the rest just to push it a little. It was not a bad workout, except for wearing the mask was dreadful. I usually wear a paper mask but I had forgotten to bring it with me and I had a fabric one on. I felt like I was going to suffocate after the hard intervals.
Garmin had the nerve to tell me my day was "unproductive". I beg to differ! Not only did I do speedwork, I finally got to a task I've been putting off at work and I got a tire replaced (ran over some piece of metal for the second time since getting these new tires this summer).6 -

Hill repeats this morning. The plan said run 10 mins warmup then uphill for 20 seconds then back down again x6, 10 minutes cooldown. 20 seconds didn't seem like much of a hill to me, the hill I normally do repeats on is 1 minute up, so I ignored the prompts on my watch and stuck to my regular hill. All done it came to a little over 5km.
It was grossly humid this morning which made the run feel harder than it usually does. The weather report is showing it cooling down over the next week which I'm very much looking forward to.6 -
Hamstring was sore this morning so no run for me but I had to get out in the cool sunshine before the next storm hits. We are supposed to really get dumped on but we'll see, they've been saying it is coming everyday this week and so far nada!
I hit menopause in my late 50's, my mom in her early 50's. Everyone is different and has different symptoms. I do think it is something that should be discussed more openly and isn't something to be embarrassed about like it has been in the past. I guess in the past women thought it was the end of their life and now we know that just isn't so. I honestly think I had such an easy time of it because I had gotten so active and started running.
I have recommended this podcast individually to a couple of people but figure I will post it here too. It is a good resource and is done by women endurance athletes (triathletes, runners and cyclists) and they bring in experts in different areas. I wish it had been around when I was younger so I had more of an idea of what to expect and what to do about it. There are 16 episodes and this is one I recently listened to about nutrition requirements - https://livefeisty.com/hit-play-not-pause-eat-carbs-with-hillary-wright-elizabeth-ward/
They also have several other podcasts: an IronWoman podcast, one on cycling, etc...6 -
There was a good BBC programme on the menopause that I watched with my SO.
Work is interfering with life and especially running at the moment. It is recovery week and I have a niggle in my left foot so I'll take it this meant to be and keep to the minimum the training plan has.
The RtW2021 challenge is making great strides across Spain soon to be cruising around the embalse de Ricobaya before heading into Portugal, our 12th country so far!11 -
My kickboxing class was cancelled last night. I ended up a 2.25 mile walk around my neighborhood. I go on-call today for the next week. I hope to get in some runs, although they might end up being a couple of short ones spread out, depending on what is going on.

@katharmonic Thanks. Pre-surgery, I only counted walking miles that were 3.5 mph or faster, so, to me 3.0 mph feels pretty slow. I'll try. If it's too much, I can always change my mind. LOL You're speed work on the treadmill sounds intense, especially with a mask on. Stupid Garmin. What does he know anyway? Glad you were able to get your tire replaced. Do you have any idea where you are running over the debris? Stupid question. If you knew, you would avoid it!
Nice run @kgirlhart !
@kirstymn Nice on the hill repeats. They are so hard, but feel so good when you are done!
@marisap2010 I hope you are able to get some runs in around work. It's hard. I don't know how most of you all do all the running you do AND work. You're awesome.

Low 20s F and snowing this morning, so treadmill seemed like a good plan. Got to hear "The Stroll," "Sugartime," and "I Fall to Pieces" during the run.
@Tramboman this made me LOL. My random running playlist includes songs which include highly motivational or apt lines such as 'I'm just a sucker for pain', 'when your legs don't work like they used to', 'I would do anything for love, I'd run right into hell up that hill and back' and 'whip, whip, run me like a racehorse'. They tend to pop up (or maybe my brain just registers them more) in weak moments, making me really laugh out loud and keep going.9 -
