Morning all!
Well im both tired and elated! This morning I was up at 520am, scoffed breakfast, then ran 13k! It is a beautiful, though a bit cool, morning with a slight head wind at the beginning, that turned into a nice tail wind for the return.
I am so excited to be at this point in my training. Calf is almost always pain free - had a bit of tightness yesterday but no issues at all on the run. Hips are a bit stiff, and I made sure I did a lot of stretching after.
Rear day tomorrow, and we'll earned!11 -

Woohoo @avidkeo. Totally stoked for you.2
-
@katharmonic Glad you got your long run in, even if you felt like it was a slug. Those conditions sound brutal.
@martaindale Hope you get a little bit more cool weather before winter is done.
So glad your calf isn't bothering you anymore @Avidkeo ! You're doing great.

I am still getting my daily walks in. Yesterday, I did a couple of miles on the treadmill as it was cold and rainy. Today, I walked to my mom's (and past), spent some time with her, then she and I walked half a mile before I walked back home. I did a total of 2.5 miles today...the longest since my surgery.16
-
So far, life has NOT gone according to plan! I've only gotten in 2 runs so far...and then the nasty "friend" of migraine decided to visit me for a few days. Had one for 4 days, then literally 1 1/2 days of relief....and BAM another one hit me for another 3 days of pain! (not running related, it hit a couple days after the run)
Of course, then school started, and I've been busy getting back into the routine with that, then the cold & snow...I have moved the plan down a few weeks, and Monday I plan to get back to it. There is even an "Non-cancelled" race at the end of the 10K training plan. They will be having it (Marathon, HM, 10K & 5K), permits in hand. There are also virtual options available, but my goal is to do the 10K. Legs permitting.
And, to be honest, I am NOT reading through over 300 posts to get caught up, sorry. Hugs to those to need them, Likes to those who should get them, and "Atta boy/girl" to everyone who is getting at it!12 -

I was too tired to post my run last night. But I ran 5 miles yesterday. It was a pretty good run, but chillier than I expected it to feel. Since I didn't run on Tuesday I ran 6 miles today. Today's run was better than yesterday's. I should have stopped at 5 miles, but I was enjoying it so I just ran further. I did have to work though or I might have gone longer. Tomorrow will be a rest day. I'm hoping to sleep in some. I need to start going to bed earlier. I haven't had a chance to get caught up on the thread yet. But I am pretty tired now so I may have to catch up tomorrow.

*So, my 2021 resolution is to hike/run all 193 (or 195 depending on your source) countries of the world this year. This could be difficult, since I don’t have a passport. But YouTube to the rescue! I have been using the site to take train “trips” recently, and have found them strangely motivating. Why not the world?

Great running everyone!
@TheMrWobbly - loving the flybys!
@marisap2010 - I hope Daisy's surgery went well and she is now recovering. Hobbes the Vizsla, while younger has had surgery for tumors twice and come through with flying colors. They do seem to bounce back pretty well.
Speaking of dogs - has anyone heard from @mbaker566? I wonder how she is doing with all the snow and ice and her pups and fosters.
I got out for a run yesterday and despite new shoes (see below) and a Hamilton run planned, I just couldn't get my legs going. Also my hamstring hurt so bad I thought I may have reinsured it and was sure it would be terrible today as it still hurt when I got up.
However I needed to get out because it was supposed to be beautiful today and raining on Saturday (yay we need it so badly!). It was as beautiful was they predicted and right around 60F. It was very windy on the outbound part to the point of making it hard to breathe and I kept feeling like I wasn't moving or making any progress. I also almost fell over a couple of times when the wind changed direction and let up the pressure against me. We ran on the dirt service road because I forgot my mask and I was worried there would be too many people on the paved trail to run without it. Coming back though after getting the pup a drink we ran down a bit on the paved trail too just because it was so very nice out and didn't encounter anyone. All in all it was a great run. My hamstring was great for the most part, didn't hurt during or after.
Shoe PornPictures from today's runA huge flock of gulls took flight from the river as we were running circling up and around us with half eventually settling back in the river and the rest on the other side in one of the lakes. I stopped as I really didn't want to run under them and take a chance of an inadvertent bombing. Honestly it looked like a scene from the movie The Birds (dating myself I am sure lol)Date..........Miles........Total

Thanks everyone for the well wishes for Daisy. They ended up having to cut out more than they anticipated, so she has a 5 inch incision down her back. She was pretty out of it from the anesthesia last night, but she ate a tiny amount last night and her normal amount this morning. We should have the biopsy results Wednesday.
I ran 3 miles on the treadmill at the gym yesterday while awaiting Daisy, and I also got in a .5 mile walk with my other Bassett.
Since we are rolling into Paris, I have a couple of pics to share from when I was there a few years ago.13 -

Cloudy and low 20s F today. Snowed a little overnight, and rather than take a chance on the footing and the cars, just did treadmill.
Ahhhhhhhhh...shoe porn!!!
@shanaber The only birds that generally circle over me are vultures.
When you pop in here claiming your December 2021 mileage, what accomplishments will you have made?
PUT THE FUN BACK IN THE RUN!

@dreamer12151 I hope you can get into a routine soon and that your HM plan works out. Balancing work/school, weather, and exercise is hard. Just don't stop. You'll figure it out.
@kgirlhart Yeah for the nice run. Hope you got a good night's sleep.
Hahaha @HonuNui . At least you got it done.
@shanaber Yeah for a nice run and glad your hamstring didn't bother you much. Love the shoe porn. It looks like you have such small feet. Mine always look like boats. LOL I remember watching The Birds. Once was enough. Most horror movies don't scare me. That one did!
@marisap2010 Glad Daisy came through the surgery okay. Praying for good news on the biopsy. Thanks for the Paris pictures.

Great work everyone!
Lol @Tramboman there are griffon vultures in the hills where my mum lives. Whenever I see them while running up there I end up muttering "*kitten* off, I'm not dead yet and I'm not a rabbit"5 -
@Tramboman - oh there were vultures, California Turkey Vultures. I just didn't get any pictures of them. On Thursday I had one flying right over me looking down like he was trying to figure out if he could take me. I couldn't get my phone out to take a picture of him. Yesterday they were mostly high up and fighting to soar against the wind. They also sit in the deadwood trees along the trail and watch all the people and dogs.
@quilteryoyo - I do have pretty small feet. A size 6-6.5 in most shoes but in running a 7.5 usually.
@marisap2010 - so glad Daisy is doing well. It is important that they take enough to get good margins if they suspect cancer. They don't want to have to go back and do it again. Hobbes first one on his side was pretty small but the incision was large to get enough margin.
I forgot to mention that I wouldn't normally get such bright shoes but they were half price. When I was running if I glanced down they kept startling me 😂 I guess no one could say they didn't see me coming!
Rainy cross training day today so far so good with the hamstring. It is tight but not hurting!

Me too! My running shoes are a 9.5 US and I'm 5'5". My 6'1" husband wears a half size larger than me. It's kind of comical.3 -

Well my goal shouldn't be a problem this month!
Today's run was HARD. Sometimes you feel tired or whatever when you start then after a mile or 2 you hit your stride and it gets easier. Not today. After 4 miles of struggling I had to accept that this was just a run I was going to have to get through. I did get through it and my pace wasn't even bad overall even if it was a bit erratic from mile to mile.
We were going to go hike today but ended up postponing because it's really wet out and the trail we are working on is very likely to just be a muddy mess. Honestly I just don't have it in me to fight mud for another 6 miles today. So, in going to sit on the couch, watch a movie, and order a pizza later. Ready for some down time!10 -
On the topic of vultures/buzzards.....When I did a mud run several years back, I was doing the first water challenge, you were on your back, in water & going under poles. Now, I knew there would be water, but I do have a fear of deep water, and I was trying to work through some of my fears with this run (the part where I almost drown - literally - came much later). As I was laying there on my back, trying to get to the next pole, I looked up & saw several vultures circling overhead. I paused, then yelled out "Go on! I ain't dead yet"! (in an English accent, I tend to do that when stressed, blame it on me mum being English? lol) I then heard a few bystanders shouting out in a heavy Scots accent "Then get a move on, girl, you can do it! " and clapping. I sped through it, and my son, who was cheering me on took a cool picture of me as I moved on to the next challenge. Those vultures didn't get me that day!
(unfortunately, new phone & laptop, can't find the picture now)12 -
@martaindale That sounds like a wonderful way to spend the evening. Enjoy. My running shoes are 10.5 wide. LOL3
-
I think I'm around 70 miles. This week has been *kitten*. Long run moved to Sunday, hoping for 13-14 miles.8

Hi everyone. I need to go back and do some reading and catch up. I hope everyone is doing great.
I had my follow up on Thursday and she said everything is perfect exactly as she was hoping. 2 weeks until the stitches come out and then 3 more weeks of cast. No real pain, just uncomfortable at times. She said when she got in there piece of ligament with bone attached was floating around. Gross I have lots of stitches especially on the outside where the break was. She had to input screws, rods and a plate. On the inside the ligaments came off the bone so she put screws in the ankle bone to sew them back on.
@quilteryoyo I’m sure there’s an update I’ll read from you in all the posts I missed. I hope you are recovering well.7 -
Great news @skippygirlsmom! Glad you are recovering well!
@quilteryoyo is doing a great job on her recovery too. Such strong women here!
Work is still kicking my butt, and now having major plumbing problems at the house. Just been a hard few weeks. Thought 2021 was going to be so much better....no sign of that happing yet
Had a pretty good HM this afternoon. Didn't kill myself. Kind of cold and misty, so just glad to get it done.
Almost at monthly goal already.10 -
I’ll have to get X-rays from the doctors office but here my after surgery pictures. She’s the best she worked hard to line up the Dad on my tattoo. She thinks she will be almost as good as new.9
-
@skippygirlsmom Wow! That is a lot of stitches. Sounds like she had a lot of work to do. Glad everything is like she wanted it to be and you aren't in much pain. It's nice that she tried to get the tattoo back together properly. I had my follow up on Thursday too. He said everything looked good and I was doing great. I'm allowed to walk as much as I want, but no running for 6 more weeks. BTW, I sent you a MFP friend request this morning. Did you get it?
Thanks @Scott6255 ! Sorry you are having a rough start to 2021. Hugs to you! Hope you can get your plumbing issues resolved quickly. Yeah for the HM and being almost to your goal already!!!3 -
Wow, @skippygirlsmom that's some major stitching and hardware. Glad everything looks like it's healing so well. You are a tough one! Keep up the good recovery.
@dreamer12151 that's a good story. Glad the vultures didn't get you and you didn't drown. Scary though - I really don't like those mud/water obstacles and I don't really have any water fears. But they are cold and gross and I'd rather not put my head in there, thanks.
@quilteryoyo I wear a 10.5 too. Not wide but plenty long. I always think how much cuter the shoes are for those with more petite feet. But we have a nice stable base I guess
@Scott6255 and @RunsOnEspresso sorry for the rough weeks. You are doing great, hang in there.
Sounds lovely @martaindale, enjoy your down time. I was supposed to hike this weekend too but we postponed due to extreme wind chill. My long run yesterday was like that too, and I passed on running this morning, I just couldn't do it. Great work towards your goal this month.
@shanaber I love the bright shoes. I've had that where new shoes were bright and would catch my eye all the time. Love the pics - I totally see The Birds reference and think of that all the time when a big flock of birds swarms by. Glad your hamstring is finally doing better!
@TheMrWobbly we're even +37 ahead of pace right now! Good running this weekend everyone!

As I mentioned above, I didn't have it in me to get up to meet the group for a run this morning after yesterday's long run slog. Plus it was REALLY cold and had snowed several inches overnight so the roads were terrible. I very much enjoyed staying in bed an extra hour or so. I did go to the gym for a class at 9:15 and then I got home and took Stella out with me for a snowshoe hike in the woods. It was gorgeous! The sun came out and the sky was blue. It was only 18 degrees but in the woods out of the wind it wasn't too bad.
I was thinking about taking the day off completely but about 4 pm I met up with a friend who had been quarantining for 10 days and was so happy to be out of the house. Neither of us had a lot of energy so we did a slowish 5k jog around the neighborhood. It was still cold but the wind had died down and we were so busy catching up it went by pretty quickly.
Last night I had my second ski lesson and that was really fun - I felt so much better and pretty much conquered my fear of getting off the chair lift. I went up and skied down about a dozen times so I really felt comfortable by the end. I even did the little bit steeper part of the hill this time. Tomorrow I'm going to a "real" ski place with some friends so we'll see how I fare stepping it up a bit.10 -

Went for a run around a couple of islands in the harbour today. Caught the ferry with four friends expecting a rather long and hot day.
Rangitoto is a dormant volcano so running was on very uneven and sharp scoria (stuff you truly don’t want to fall over on). It was pretty slow going until we crossed the causeway to Motutapu. This is farmland so lots of grass. Fortunately, trails had been mown through a lot of it but it was still rather uneven underfoot. After a couple of hours my ankles were quite sore from having to work so hard.
The other complication was our leader (who is Swiss). She told me Motutapu was flat. It is patently obvious Rangitoto is not but she said we’d do 20km around Motutapu and then those with the will and the energy could go up Rangitoto, about another 10km. Anyway, she lied. Apparently the Swiss have a different idea of what constitutes a hill.
When we got to the fork in the trail saying 45mins to the summit or 45 mins to the wharf and the ferry home my legs were shot. We’d done 22km incorporating 500m-plus of elevation. That’s some serious climbing. I could not handle another 6km (the best guess as to the distance to the top then back down). Consequently I and another woman headed to the wharf while the other three headed to the summit.
By the time we got to the wharf we were close on 25km. About 15 minutes later our friends arrived. Turns out the route to the summit then back down was only 850 metres longer than the flattish route we took home. I was gutted. I really wanted to go up the volcano but had no way of knowing it was such a short detour! Next time. Although I don’t think that will come too soon. It was a hard day.
Fortunately the weather was on our side. It can be blistering out there - they say it’s usually 5 degrees hotter than the mainland. The black rock absorbs the heat and you can feel it coming up under you. Also, there are very few trees so you’re at the mercy of the sun. We had heavy cloud and drizzle for much of the day - still very warm and super humid - but not unbearable. We had to carry a lot of water plus had more supplies stashed at the wharf for after (no drinkable water on either island).
Great day. Lots of laughs (mostly at the expense of the Swiss friend who confidently pronounced at the end that anything under 1000 metres elevation is flattish).
Incidentally, her Strava shows less than 100 metres extra climbing to ascend Rangitoto!
