Hope you have a quick recovery. Took a trip yesterday undone by some pesky brambles though fortunately the only thing hurt was my pride.

I have to say, too many of us are going through the wringer right now - injuries, surgeries, job loss, work woes, moving stresses, weather misery. Sending summery hugs to you all. I hope you all bounce really quickly and join those of us in the new PB/feel good club. We’ve saved you a spot!10

@AlphaHowls I'm nowhere near your distances, but imagine it's even harder in winter. I can get through one long run a week, sometimes breaking it up into 2 runs to warm up in the middle... but you're doing that every day and I think you're awesome.
Today my youngest went back to in-person school. They've only got up to grade 3 in the building, so classes are separated and spread out through the building, with masks etc. The bookbag was insane (with EVERYTHING inside) so I carried it and walked her to school before running off to do my speedwork (6 repeats of approximately 4-5 minutes, with 1-2 minutes walk/jog in between) in the woods.Frozen buff and everything 🥶Before we left I had gone out to the car for something and then promptly changed into a ski jacket when I came back in - excellent choice. As I was running, I kept thinking, "Wow, it seems extra cold today. Is it just that I haven't been out this early lately? Maybe 2 pairs of running tights weren't enough..." I kind of debated looking at my phone for the temperature, because on one hand, if it wasn't that cold, I'd be disappointed for being a wuss, but it DID seem cold and I was curious... so I finally checked, and it was -19°C. Yeah. That's cold. The front of my legs (quads etc) were getting really cold, though, so it's good that I only had a short run planned. Strangely, the walk/jog intervals seemed to warm me up a bit. Maybe the heavier jacket helped. I typically wear a lighter one and then get cold when I slow down.10 -

Yay!!!!
@AlphaHowls I agree with @polskagirl01 , you're amazing!
This morning I decided that a week was probably long enough for the river to have calmed down a bit and some mud to have dried up, and that I would head for the nice soft track along the river bank to give my legs a treat. They really don't like run after run after run on pavement. I toyed briefly with the idea of digging out my trail shoes, which haven't seen the light in a year I don't think, but decided it wouldn't be that muddy so opted for the more cushioned pair I use for medium-long runs and rainy days.
When I went to turn off the road onto the track there was a half-meter drop that wasn't there before, and basically just no track! ALL the dirt got washed away in the storms, leaving a very stony trail that instead of being nice to my legs left my ankles in a very bad mood. I decided rather than being annoyed or upset, I would call today's run my first training session for running on cobbles. Probably won't go back that way for a while though!12 -

Low 30s F and snowing today, so I played on the treadmill instead of suffering outside.
When you pop in here claiming your December 2021 mileage, what accomplishments will you have made?
PUT THE FUN BACK IN THE RUN!
Return to a good running weight of 175 lbs (second attempt)4 -
@AlphaHowls I hope you aren't too sore this morning. I am amazed that you ran almost 10 miles after falling! I probably would have walked home, feeling sorry for myself.
@marisap2010 Glad you enjoyed your walk.
Glad you weren't hurt @TheMrWobbly ! Hope you weren't scratched up too badly.
@polskagirl01 You are a beast! That is really, really cold. Glad you only had a short run planned and it went well. The picture is really pretty though.
@eleanorhawkins Hope your legs and ankles aren't too angry with you. Don't blame you for running elsewhere for a while.3 -
@quilteryoyo thanks, they're pretty sore and tight at the moment. I had thought about doing Wednesday's run tomorrow as there's a 100% likelihood of rain on Wednesday AND they're closing our town boundaries again at midnight tomorrow for at least 14 days due to sharp increases in COVID cases, which means I'll be back to running round in annoying circles up and down hills, but they're telling me that is not going to be a good idea.
How are you feeling now, have the headaches eased up?
I'm starting to get a bit bored of doing the same old runs on the same old routes as the same old pace (well actually I seem to be getting slower and slower). Have started to think about ditching this crazy monthly HM distance plan and doing something different, maybe starting back on that base training plan of Hal's I did last year that had hill repeats and stuff in. Makes me tired just thinking about that, though. I would hate to stop this monthly HM streak too, but fear overtraining etc. I was looking at duathlon training plans the other day because I like the sound of those, too, but it seems like I would be running a lot less than I am now, and I don't think I (and certainly not my weight as I'm stress eating like an idiot atm) could stand that!
Meh. I hate Mondays.7 -
Ran a virtual 10k this morning called “Coffee. Run. Wine. Repeat.” I signed up because I wanted the tank top! 🤣14

Wow you guys are all amazing! Some fab running @TheMrWobbly and @summerskier and tough cookies battling injury and ridiculous cold @AlphaHowls @polskagirl01! @Camaramandy648 I’m sorry you have work stress and hope you find something much better quickly. Amazing running though, so inspiring as ever.
I ran a couple of times on the treadmill last week, but then had to have a tooth yanked and was pretty sore so rested. This morning I got up so frustrated with feeling ill or pained or unfit and I went out for a run. My first run outside on the street instead of treadmill for a really long time. It was hard and I have a lot of ground to make up but I’m so glad I did it. January will be a very low mileage month but I’m ok with that. As long as I keep going!
Jan goal: Get back to running regularly and build fitness back up
Jan mileage:
13/1: 2.24m
14/1: 2.9m
18/1: 3.4511 -
@eleanorhawkins Sounds like you need to listen to your body and take a rest day today. Sorry your town is going to be shut down again. I'm really, really tired of CoVID and all it has taken away from us. I'm with you on getting bored with the same routine. That's why I started using the 80/20 Running plan. It varied the runs with hills, intervals, speed work, etc. Much easier, mentally, to do a varied plan. Actually, I've had more of the visual migraines today. Definitely something I will discuss with the surgeon on Thursday.
@AlphaHowls Glad you aren't too sore. Nice run. Thanks for getting us to London.
@Faebert Sorry about your tooth. Glad you were able to go out for a run this morning. You are doing great - forward progress is progress!
@TheMrWobbly I have a question about Challenge Hound that you have probably already answered. I went into it this morning and added all of the walking I have done since I got out of the hospital. But, it isn't showing up. Does it just take some time or is it now showing because I indicated it was a walk and not a run?4 -
@Faebert I had a tooth pulled a few months back, and was really surprised how something so small could be so rough on me. I guess it's good though in a way, like your whole body gets involved to make sure that one part recovers.4

Hi @quilteryoyo it is set to only recognise runs so it doesn't pick up other people's strava walks, When you manually input can you tag it as a virtual run?
Great to know you got to run outside @Faebert
Sounds like more interesting times @Camaramandy648 and I really hope you find a smooth run soon as you truly deserve it!

Like @Scott6255 I’ve been busy with work and feeling non-chatty lately. I am still here reading and liking and giving hugs. You all are my steadfast point of light! I debated about taking a rest day today after running for the last 4 days but I didn’t have to work so I figured I could at least get outside for a run. I waited until about 2:00 pm to head out. The temp said 34F but there was a cold wind blowing. I’m not sure what the wind chill temp was but I was ready to head back to the house when I passed by my driveway at only three-tenths of a mile out. I told myself if I got to a certain point and was still cold I could turn around then. By that time however, I was warming up and was sheltered from the wind somewhat so I kept going.
I’ve always wanted to go to London so thanks for getting us there @AlphaHowls! I noticed Challenge Hound says we are only 8 miles behind schedule now. At one point I think we had a 54 mile deficit.
Upcoming Races/Challenges:
CRAW (Circumpolar Race Around the World) – in progress
Run the World Challenge – in progress
Desert Storm 218 Miler Challenge (Jan 17 – Feb 28) – in progress
Peyton’s Wild n Wacky 50k (March 13) - training
Cooper River 10k (Sept 25)
Marine Corps Marathon (Oct 31)
Cade’s Cove Loop Lope (Nov 14)

@Teresa502 You're doing great. It was too cold for me outside today.
@TheMrWobbly I'll go see if I can change my input to something it will recognize. Hopefully it won't be too long that I can actually log runs - a few weeks, I expect. Edit: Making it a virtual run worked. Thanks.
BTW, it's now showing us 55 miles behind schedule.5 -
Afternoon everyone.
@AlphaHowls glad you are OK after your fall. So annoying!
I'm tired today. Doing another week of shift work. And juggling my mum visiting. Just mentally draining. Fortunately last night was quiet at work, can only hope for another night like that!
Today was cross training, so involved a 15 min swim, a 30 min stationery cycle, and a 25 min strength workout. I'm exhausted!
Half way through January and main goal is going well (stay injury free). And second goal is definitely going well (train for HM). Just loving it atm

Finally caught up! Now if I could just remember everyone I wanted to say something to!
@Camaramandy648 If you’ve gotta lose a job at least you lost it for a good reason. Hope something new comes along soon!
@AlphaHowls Ouch! You are amazing and unstoppable though!
@Avidkeo Your crosstraining sounds intense!
@TheMrWobbly I love the updates on where we are running, we can wave at @Faebert as we go through her neck of the woods! I looked and our path through Memphis goes within a few yards of my railroad access road! Also very near Graceland.
@Faebert I am just really pleased you are running again!
@eleanorhawkins I think cobbles are probably my least favorite surface, we only have them in a little space down by the river but I hate walking on them, much less running! Like you I am ready for this to be over so we can freely run wherever we want.7 -
@AlphaHowls glad you are okay and not too sore. Great job getting us to London. I see we've now sailed through there and heading to Brighton. Do we have someone there to visit?
@Faebert sorry about the tooth. Ouch. I'm a total baby about tooth pain, more than almost anything else.
Likes and hugs passed out above - keep up the good running, hang in there with the cold and general blahs everyone. Hope all those recovering are continuing to do well. We'll get through!

I also didn't want to run in the cold this morning, and it was lightly snowing. I did some work from home and was actually accomplishing something, but Stella as always got impatient and demanded we go out. So I took her out around noon for a run/walk on the snowy trails. I went up to a less busy section so I could drop her leash and let her trot along on her own instead of dragging behind. It sort of works. I have to do a lot of stopping and circling back if she falls behind. But she's willing to go longer if she feels like she's in charge of her own destiny. We did about 3 miles running not counting some additional walking up and down some steep slippery
sections.
Then tonight I went to the gym for strength training and had time to do a couple more miles of warmup on the treadmill. I was happy to get 5 miles in today instead of just 3, especially since I didn't get a long run in over the weekend.
I think I bench pressed a new personal best tonight! Not an amount to brag about at all but I've always been kind of weak at that and don't work on it nearly enough to improve. So I'm happy to see some progress and get motivated to be able to push a little bit harder.

My husband and I ran the second race of our homegrown series today! We went to Shelby Farms and attempted to run the 3k course of the Winter Off-road series. I say “attempted” because the course was completely unmarked and not on any of the official trails, presumably because they wanted to avoid other park users. We had expected that 700 runners the day before would have churned up the ground well enough to see where to go, but it’s dry and the ground is hard, so no signs of runners!
So we were out there guessing where to go on trails we had never been on, based on a rough map, at full speed! We overlaid our Strava run on the course map after we got home and for the most part it looks like we were pretty close. Since in the past the series maps haven’t exactly matched what was run on the day there is always an element of mystery, but I feel like we ran 3k in conditions similar enough to the official race that I can compare my time to the results and get an idea of how I would have done.
We finished in 19:43, which would have put me 3rd in my AG yesterday. There are two ladies in my AG who ran very similar times to mine in last year’s series, so I was using them as a benchmark. The faster of them ran 19:44. So, pretty much right on as far as what I expected from myself.
Weather was lovely - nice bright sun, a few clouds, and a HOWLING WIND ARE YOU KIDDING? seriously I got out of the car, decided not to wear sleeves since it was so nice, and then the wind whipped my cheeks red before we reached the start line! It was supposed to be 11 mph but I’m guessing more like 25. Fortunately the wind was mostly behind us, and maybe even gave us a little boost.
I’m not sure we would have done this today had I remembered that it was a holiday. Even running on unmarked trails, we had to cross the marked trails in several places, and there were swarms of people everywhere. Twice we literally had to stop and wait on dawdlers to move along so we wouldn’t have to get within touching distance of them. And once a large family of young children decided it would be fun to race alongside us. Which was fun, but seriously, no, go away. It turns out I can outrun a bunch of gradeschoolers, who knew?
We did have fun! Next up, 5k.
When we were trying to figure out where the course went, we noticed there were little flags which we thought might be trail markers for the race. They are not. I don’t think. This one said, “Hippie Van.”10 -
No running. Just wanted to pop in.
@Avidkeo @Teresa502 @Scott6255 and whoever else I missed, hope everyone gets some rest soon.
@quilteryoyo Sounds like you're doing great.
@Camaramandy648 You're awesome as always, good luck on the job.
@AlphaHowls @TheMrWobbly Glad you're OK!
@marisap2010 @rheddmobile Congrats on your races!
@eleanorhawkins If you started dualthalon training, then theoretically the cycling would burn calories too. But I get super hungry when I'm biking my commute, so might work both ways.
Didn't know where to put this but I kinda wanted to vent and y'all are wonderful and really care, so...I've been pretty down for a while, and outside of work it's just been hard to go anywhere or do anything. Last week I finally decided to suck it up and go to a doc. Talk therapy really isn't a thing where I am so meds were the only way to go. Well I had expected the meds to have some bad side effects but these pills just chewed me up and spit me back out. Took them before bed then spent the night having OCD nightmares about how I had to light up every single tile in a room (and I don't even have OCD), plus heartburn, plus elevated HR, plus not much sleep. Yeah that was fun. I can see why some kids take these as recreational drugs. By the afternoon I was sporting a fever and decided the meds route is not for me.
That was Sunday. Today I'm finally not feeling like microwaved *kitten*. No more pills. Suppose the only thing left is to just... pull myself out of it best I can. Or die trying. Rant over. Sorry guys.19 -
@noblsheep Garmin reckons I burn half the calories cycling that I burn running. Guess I don't do it hard enough 😂
Some of those meds are awful. When I was on anti-depressants I was a zombie, so spaced out. Don't know if you've ever used 7cups.com, I have found it helpful at times when I've needed to get stuff off my chest. Plus, of course, always here if you need a chat in the silly hours.4 -
Mind over matter run today. I’m on holiday with my girls, staying at my sister’s bach (holiday cottage) and my 8 year old woke at 11:30 with terrible hay fever, just as I was dozing off (were in a room together). As she had already had an antihistamine I tried to soothe her back to sleep but she keep sneezing, then crying. After an hour or so I gave her another antihistamine and she finally fell asleep next to me at around 3am. Naturally, she woke bright as a button at 6:10 and wanted to get up and going. With no option to snooze and the day promising to be hot, I put on my shoes and headed out for an hour of hills (this island is tiny and hills are the only option). I had to keep telling myself that while I felt tired, I had actually been resting for eight hours so physically I should be fine. Seemed to work and I enjoyed my run.
I will confess to having a two hour nap this afternoon - I needed it desperately. My daughter seemed unaffected by the whole scenario. Needless to say, I went to the pharmacy this morning for some stronger antihistamines for her so we don’t get a repeat tonight. Wish me luck!11 -
@noblsheep I know that therapy isn’t so commonplace where you are, but I would recommend looking online to see if there is some sort of Zoom type or even chat type counseling available. As a therapist, I say that with some hesitation because I think that there is definitely a difference between in person contact vs virtual (my research in school was on the drawbacks of computer-mediated communication, but that was also almost 20 years ago when technology was not so great), but I think it could be better than nothing, especially if you are having such adverse response to medication.8
-
Glad things are going so well for you right now @Avidkeo . It's great when you love your training plan. Enjoy your mom while she's there.
@katharmonic That looks like a lovely, albeit cold, place to run. Speed Demon does look happy to be "in charge." Congrats on your PB bench press! That's awesome.
@rheddmobile You did great on your race and keeping close to the actual course. Third in your AG is nothing to sneeze at! Love that you outran the group of grade-schoolers. LOL
I'm sorry you are having such a hard time @noblsheep ! Sometimes the "cure" is worse than what ails you. I don't know if it would help or not, but I journal everyday. It really helps me when I am depressed - able to get my feelings out and work through them. And, please feel free to rant at us anytime. We do care.
@ContraryMaryMary Fingers crossed that the stronger antihistamines will work for your daughter. Good for you for getting out and doing hills after not having much sleep. Enjoy the rest of your holiday.

Cloudy, cold, and snowy again today, so used the treadmill. Felt good, so I went a little farther than usual.
Just 2 more weeks until the groundhog tells us we're having 6 more weeks of winter or 5 weeks and 6 days more of winter.
Hugs and prayers for those struggling with issues.

@noblsheep I feel for you. I know it is hard to adjust to the meds and to figure out if you need to try something different or ride it out. There are a lot of different options but I understand not wanting to go that route any more. I haven't tried the online counseling but as suggested that might be a help to you. Hugs and hang in there. We're here.
Sorry about your rough night @ContraryMaryMary. Hope your daughter does better tonight with the antihistimines.
@quilteryoyo thanks, but mine is Stella, not the adorable Speed Demon Very much not. Ha!

I also did not sleep well last night but for no good reason. It felt like I barely slept at all but of course I was sound asleep when the alarm went off at 6. I snoozed until the last possible minute then headed to the gym for yoga class. I got 1 mile warmup on the treadmill before it, and then did 2 miles after. I skipped strength class because that felt like way too much on so little sleep. I foresee a nap later today too or a very early bedtime. Or both.6 -

Went out yesterday morning for some pace work then went for a 5 miles hike with the family. We are working our mileage up to a distance where we can hike the Lone Star Hiking Trail in segments. It's 90 something miles total and ends an hour drive or so from our house. We did an out and back of a little over 5 miles and my daughter was totally fine. She can definitely go farther, especially if we keep the pace down and bring snacks. To be fair, I needed a snack too. I think our next hike will be the last segment of the trail. We are working it backwards. That segment is just under 6 miles, so we will take 2 cars, park one at the end and drive the other to the beginning. We are enjoying the family hikes and it's a fun way to spend a chunk of the weekend without being around other people.11 -
