Morning all.
I'm a bit achey this morning so will do a yoga session later. It's rest day today. First mum and I are taking the girls to the bike park this morning, then going to look at some open homes, mum is looking to buy a house here. Don't expect to find THE house today but there are a few to look at. Should be interesting.
So glad I did my long run yesterday!7 -
Whatever works... 🤨
Lol im the resident radiographer so these guys have learned that I LOVE looking at xrays. Though I guess that's weird when you get your xrays "can I get a pic of this so I can show to my online running group..."
Some radiographers will happily let you take pics, others not so much.
But hey, that's who I am lol. [/quote]
X-rays of my workout partner 2 weeks apart.

Lovely morning here today. Mid 40’s and sunny. My plan is working my long runs back up a little and it is nice. I enjoy a longer run on Saturday morning. We have a holiday here on Monday so the family is planning on a hike. Should be fun.
The big news around here is that my in-laws (who live right behind us and have been quarantining with us) are scheduled to get their first vaccine dose today! Our area recently moved to centralized hubs and announced a clinic via twitter yesterday morning for 2400 spots. They filled in about 15 minutes! It is encouraging to me that people are so eager to get vaccinated. Now we just need about 6 million more doses!5 -

Ohhh pretty, and sore! I'm assuming dog? Some good healing showing!0 -
Actually my horse. The vet thought it was a new break but after the second x-ray she decided that it was an old fracture. Best New Year’s present ever was her telling me that.

My husband and I are running our own private Winter series as a substitute for the in-person Winter Off-Road series - our plan right now is to do each distance of the series twice, once on roads as fast as possible, then on trails, on the same course as the official Off-Road series if possible, if not, in similar terrain wherever we feel safe running. That way we can look at the results and compare both our road and trail times to both the virtual and in-person runners.
I really miss running the series but regret not doing it less and less the more I learn about it - right now the organizers’ Facebook page is full of photos of people previewing the official course two days ago - unmasked, frolicking, and hugging on each other. Even their “safety” regulations - they require in person sign in, temperature check, and filling out paperwork saying you are symptom-free - would mean more close contact with other humans than I have had since last March. So yeah, that’s a big nope from me. Also the guy who announces the races every year literally just died of Covid a week ago and there is a memorial up for him on their homepage, so it’s not like they don’t know things are bad right now.
Regardless, we are determined to make our own fun! The weather got in on the winter series action. It was nice and balmy with bright sunlight while we were getting dressed, then turned completely overcast, dropped ten degrees, and the wind picked up during the five minute drive to our spot. Much more wintery! So we were nicely underdressed, which turned out to mean we were perfectly dressed for running our hardest.
I marked out 3k on our usual Strava run and created a segment from it, which turns out to be almost exactly the entire length of the railroad access road going one way. I like making courses from Strava segments for races since it means I don’t have to worry about stopping or starting the run exactly. 3k is a fun distance for a race because you can just run like crazy and not have to worry about pacing yourself. The Winter series course in the past has been at Overton Park on what we like to call “the slip and slide” - a muddy creek bed back in the woods with steep sides, true singletrack, with just enough dips and roots to be interesting. It’s a total blast, you just keep moving forward and try not to faceplant in the mud! Unfortunately this year it’s at Shelby Farms instead, on a course which is mostly grass. Also, moles.
The course we ran is a railroad access road, two lanes with no shoulder and very little traffic. I was pleased when our time - 15:57 - turned out to be a PR for the race segment, which we have run 29 times since joining Strava. Since several of those runs were part of a 5k race or a time trial of some sort, that means we did well today!
After finishing we headed over to the little bit of woods nearby and pretended we were running a trail race. There’s only about a mile or so of trails back there, not even enough to make a 3k course properly, but it has helped us keep our sanity when no other trails were available. One of the things that’s making me sad about missing the in-person series is that we always get the best photographs from the professional photographers at the series. So my husband kindly took a couple of shots of me running.
I like this feature - being able to see our different times on the same stretch of road.

Good call @rheddmobile and what an awesome solution. Love it!2

Longest run ever!!!!
For me that is, not forever ever, that would be weird, and probably not doable in 3 hours on a Sunday morning!
1,680ft by the way - quite a bit short 😕14 -
I don't remember if I shared my x-ray when I broke my leg. They gave me a cd. I did not get a copy of the final x-ray (different doctor).
For anyone that wants to see. Yes, it's a picture of my computer screen. If I remember correctly there wasn't a way to save it and I didn't think to do a screenshot. LOL

Well midmonth update on Jan and goals.
#1 accomplished. This one can be tough as we all know from experience. Last Jan I ended up with a shin splint early on due to some shoes wearing out. But so far I am on track mileage wise. I am only at .32% of under 10 min splits and I was unable to get an under 9 minute split for the 2nd week but I have gotten 2 so I feel pretty good about that. Also on track for doing the long run once a month min to meet my HM goal in August. Actually started doing some 2 a days (which I posted about earlier) but I don't know that they help with endurance or not. They do help with the RTY and our team will hit 700 miles today.
I have been eating well to TDEE and if my mileage stays up I may increase a little but for some unknown reason my RHR continues to stay too high. It's pretty strange for me to have it over 60 so consistently the past few months but maybe it's internal stress due to our election antics and Covid? I don't "think" it is but rather there is something going on with my sleep most likely as that is where the readings come from. But who knows.... ??
Yesterday a most excellent run and in addition to getting a split under 9 minutes I managed a 10K in under an hour which is a rarity for me. LOL.
It's fun to read everyone's approach to the month and their different goals and challenges. And it is such a good reminder to put things in perspective and not beat ourselves up when we have a "bad" day. Hugs to our 2 runners on injured reserve. This too shall pass with time.

Yesterday, I went to the gym and did a short ladder run with increasing/decreasing pace for 2.3 miles. I also worked on arms. It is chilly this morning, so I will probably get out after lunch to run.7

@rheddmobile You're the one putting the fun back in the run!!! Keep it up!
@TheMrWobbly Great job on your big distance!!
@SummerSkier You're off to a great start!!!
When you pop in here claiming your December 2021 mileage, what accomplishments will you have made?
PUT THE FUN BACK IN THE RUN!
Return to a good running weight of 175 lbs (second attempt)7 -
@rheddmobile Awesome job on your own winter series!
@TheMrWobbly Great job on your distance and elevation.
@SummerSkier Another great run!
I am waiting for it to warm up a bit before heading out for my long run. It was about 35°F when I got up. I am waiting for it to be at least 45°F before I head out. It's sunny and the wind has died down so it should be nice. Yesterday and Friday it was so windy the sky was brown and everything is covered with a layer of dirt. I was thinking if it was like that today I might have to wear a mask so I could breath. (I rarely see people when I am running and when I do staying 6 feet away is never an issue. )6 -

It's the start of a cutback week for me today which initially I thought was unnecessary since my weekly mileage isn't that high, but these last few days I've been feeling so tired. I had to have an afternoon nap yesterday which is very unusual for me, so I guess the cutback week is probably a good idea after all
@rheddmobile Fantastic effort on your race, I love that you're doing it on your own
@TheMrWobbly Just looking at all the elevation you run makes me tired! Awesome work. I see we're currently running across the channel about to land on your home turf soon5 -
Hi all - I am behind as usual on responding but I have been reading along.
@TheMrWobbly - Great work on the map and on the overviews of what we are passing by! I hope everyone waved to my SIL's mom as they ran through Luxembourg! I have been to that Old Quarter in the City. It would be a lovely place to actually run! I would also stop for a Chimay with you!
Also even though you didn't make the entire 2000 ft elevation you still did a fantastic long run and elevation gain! Definitely not a fail!!
@brittanystebbins95 - oh puppies!! One of Hobbes the Vizsla's best friends is an Aussie named Jeep! They have run agility together since they were in their first class at 6mos. It will be tough having a baby and a puppy but I am sure they will become best friends!
@AlphaHowls - I personally have not experienced SAD but my daughter in Seattle has. I hope you can figure out what works for you to lessen its affects. You really are such an inspiration here and we are all here to cheer you on and help in anyway possible.
@kgirlhart - Yay for new shoes!
@RunsOnEspresso - I am with you on the gross heat! We have been breaking all kinds of records on a daily basis.
@skippygirlsmom - I hope you are recuperating well and that the change in medication has helped with the dizziness. Anesthesia tends to make me very nauseous so I always mention it before I have to have it and I have not had a problem with it the few times I have needed it recently.
@SummerSkier - your horse is beautiful! So glad it was an old fracture and is healing.
@rheddmobile - such a fun great idea to take your winter series and make it into one that works for you!
@Tramboman - You are pretty terrific too!
As I have whined about previously we are unusually hot here for January. The last three days we have broken records that have stood for 20-30 years or more. We hit 95F at my house on Friday and just as bad it isn't cooling off overnight. Thursday night it was 80F at 10:30pm, it cooled off some from there but it was hot again in the morning as soon as the sun started to come up. Almost as bad is that it has been so very dry with only 8-12% humidity. Fortunately it is supposed to start cooling off again later this week. I need to pick it up if I want to get to my goal this month. Hamstring is a bit better but still bothering me so I am trying to be cautious and back off when it complains. So I went out yesterday for a short run. I needed to get home, shower and head off in time for our vaccine appointment! More info below the split for anyone interested...They have opened up a mass vaccination 'pod' in an offsite Disneyland parking lot. Dh was able to get an appointment when they opened it up for anyone over 65 but was unable to add me to the appointment as the website was supposed to be able to do. I went with him anyway and they were able to add me in. It was actually an amazing sight with 5 lines of people stretching out as far in front of us as we could see and almost as far behind us (we ended up right in the middle of our line). The gut doing our registration told us they were expecting to vaccinate over 4000 people yesterday and will be ramping up to as many as 10,000/day. My dd who is helping with a vaccine drive thru in Seattle was very impressed. She said they thought they were doing well with 200/day but they don't have the space there to handle many more people/cars.
The lines continue beyond the fence rail in the picture and the white tops off in the distance are the registration and vaccination tents.
Followup dose schedule but not confirmed.
The process was incredibly well organized and moved along smoothly. We were there about 45 mins before the appointment time and waiting in line. Right about the appointment time we started moving and were vaccinated within 30mins. Because we both have had adverse reactions to other medications we had to wait for 30 mins afterwards before we could leave. No reactions so far other than a pretty sore arm. Now I am hoping they will have vaccine for our 2nd dose when it comes time.

That's a nice fracture! It's called a webber A fracture. The webber classification is based on the level of the fracture on the fibula (bone on the outside). A is below the fibula/tibila joint, B is at the level of the joint, and C is above.
There's your xray fact for the day lol9 -
The Run the World team have reached the wonderous shores of the UK, we sprinted past Dover Castle that was so loved by Mr Hitler he gave strict instructions to the Luftwaffe that it was not to be touched! We are now headed to Dreamland in Margate, home of the worlds longest all-wooden roller coaster which is now 100 years old, the Scenic railway.

Yeah - I did not expect it yesterday morning and when the sun rose it looked so strange. I finally figured out it was dust coming out from Lubbock way. yuck. You have it way worse then us. Air quality was medium in the 70's so not as bad as the Dust from Africa last year. Wow. That was horrid.
Looks like you got a nice long run in. Thank GAWD the wind has settled down. Now if the air would clear up.
Of course it did make for a glowing sunset yesterday
@Avidkeo I love that we have our own xray analyzer here.

791 POSTS BEHIND!
Let's see, where did I leave you?
I did do the 100 miles on New Years Eve, totally self-supported. I completed 101.01 in 23:02:55. It was one of the hardest, most amazing things I have ever done in my life. And I am so glad I did.
I also lost my job and have been spending all my time trying to pick up the pieces from that. I've applied for unemployment, but of course "there is an issue," and I have to go to the local office on Tuesday (tomorrow is a holiday here) and straighten it out. I'm hoping that the visit to the local office will actually end up expediting everything.
I also placed 3rd female in the Aravaipa Across The Globe challenge! 277 miles in 10 days!
I guess you can imagine, it's been a crazy month. My son's birthday is Friday, so today I've been trying to plan for that. It's a scheduled rest day and as dreamy as that sounds, I am really struggling to "rest." Always so much to do. Finding a new job on top of the regular "so much to do," is really stressful.
At the same time, I don't think I will be out of work long (let's hope and pray, okay?). It also feels a little bit like leaving a really abusive relationship. Relief.
What actually happened was that our paychecks were delayed and a lot of our technicians were leaving or refusing to come to work. My boss asked me why and I said they feel that they should not be expected to work for free and honestly, I don't blame them.
So they put me on admin leave and then I was let go a couple days later. Their words were, "You should have been trying to help fix it." Funny, payroll wasn't my job.
Aside from that, they had been calling me n-lover and monkeyhead for a while, so I think they were looking for a reason anyway.
It doesn't really matter, now. I didn't break any rules or violate any policies, so I've left them with my integrity intact and a world of opportunity in front of me.
I wish I could be a sponsored runner, already!!!
The running and coaching and training is still going well - grinding away, every day. I have had to take a down week in mileage due to the Aravaipa challenge milelage and tomorrow i get to go back to my normal, balls to the wall plan. Could not be more excited about that!
Anyway, I hope now that I'm home etc., I can check back in and respond to you all more regularly. I haven't forgotten you - just been really crazy busy, of course.
How are all of you?16 -
January Goal: 90 Miles
1/1: 6.26 miles
1/3: 9.02 miles
1/5: 5.03 miles
1/6: 5.05 miles

1/14: 5.07 miles
1/17: 9..02 miles
62.15/90 miles completed for January
I slept in a bit this morning and waited for it to warm up some before I ran. It was around 35°F when I got up, but it was 47°F by the time I started and 54°F when I finished up which is just about perfect running weather for me. I ran 9 miles and it was really nice. It was a little cloudier than it had been when I first got up, but there was still a lot of blue sky. Thankfully the sky wasn't brown like it was yesterday. It was an uneventful run, but a very enjoyable one. I had new shoes and I was feeling good. I need to go wash my car, but I am thinking about doing some yoga first.

Dang @Camaramandy648 you've really had some ups and downs lately. 100 miler on New Year's Eve is freaking amazing! I knew you could do it, but still, I am in awe!!! But that sucks so bad about your job. Sounds like it was a blessing, but finding a new job (especially now) is always a tough thing. Good luck to you!
@TheMrWobbly spectacular longest run PR for you! And thanks for all the work on the RTW Challenge. The map and descriptions of the cities is really fun.
@AlphaHowls hope you are feeling better. You are one tough woman, and I know you will come out of this soon.
@skippygirlsmom glad your surgery was a success, and hope the dizzy spells are gone.
@SummerSkier you are killing it in January.
@rheddmobile- cool idea to create your winter series and do it on both road and trails.
I have been MIA for the last week or so. Work has me buried, and haven't felt very social. Have been stuck inside due to weather and work, so last 3 runs have been on treadmill. Each one has gotten slower, even though I bump the speed up each mile.
But today was good. Finally got to run outside. This was what I needed I guess. 2nd best HM ever, since my PR 3 years ago in Houston (very flat, huge race crowds cheering). That keeps my HM or longer streak alive. Have run an HM + distance every weekend since Dec 1 (might have come up short once during that time). Probably won't continue that for much longer, but it is good to see on paper.

@shanaber that's impressive effort for the vaccination. I was pretty impressed with the organization by our health department too (although not nearly on that scale) and I looked into trying to volunteer somewhere one the distribution front to help but it appears they only take medically trained people right now. I'm due for my second dose the same day as you and I'm in the same boat. Just hoping that they will actually have it.
@rheddmobile that's cool that you are doing your own winter series. Great job!
@Camaramandy648 oh wow, congratulations on the amazing feat of the 100-miler. I can't begin to imagine how you did that but I'm not surprised that you achieved what you set out to do. Just incredible. I am so very sorry about your job and I send all the good vibes for finding a new and better one quickly.
@Scott6255 well done on your HM time and continuing your streak. I'm sure getting outside was a big help.

Little bit of snow and wind this morning but not a bad run. We chose the roads instead of the trails because of footing - the slush from yesterday had hardened to ice overnight.
After the run I showered and changed and headed out for a short local hike. No mountains this time, just a hill, but it was a steep-ish hike and it was very windy up at the top.
Finished up after I got home with a walk with Stella. Now we are curling up in front of the (fake) fire.

@alphahowls hope the daily increment in daylight helps ease the SAD (I seem to remember you are in the northern hemisphere...?)
@themrwobbly: here is my Chimay story: In 2013 I woke with an obviously obstructed airway due to a tonsillar abscess, and thus at the ripe old age of 60 needed an emergency tonsillectomy. NOTHING helped the pain and the liquid narcotic tasted so vile I couldn't keep it down. Out of state visitors came over (who knew nothing of my plight) and brought 2 bottles of Chimay ale (blue label). It was ambrosia, was so smooth and it completely erased my pain. Chimay over Lortab any day!
*So, my New Years resolution is to hike all 193 (or 195 depending on your source) countries of the world this year. This could be difficult, since I don’t have a passport. But YouTube to the rescue! I have been using the site to take train “trips” recently, and have found them strangely motivating. Why not the world?

@rheddmobile Sounds like you made a good call on skipping out on the in person races and that you and your husband have found a fun alternative. Congratulations on your PB! Awesome!
Congratulations @TheMrWobbly on your longest run, and with all of that elevation! You are doing great! Thanks for the pictures/videos and commentary on our progress around the world. I'm afraid that wooden roller coaster would NOT be approved by my heart surgeon though. LOL

You're doing great @SummerSkier !
@shanaber It's hard to believe that heat this time of year! I hope it does cool off some for you next week. Hope your hamstring quits bothering you soon.
@Camaramandy648 Awesome running! Especially on the over 100 miles in 24 hours. You are a beast. Sorry that you lost your job. Praying that you find something that you really like with a boss who appreciates you soon!
@kgirlhart Glad you had a nice run in your new shoes! You're doing great!
Congrats on that HM time @Scott6255 !
Good idea to chose roads over trails covered in ice @katharmonic. Love the picture.

Just wanted to type:
You all are so completely awesome and groovy! I do read comments, I just do not respond very often. I was able to pull the knot out of my tail and pound some more pavement. Being in this group, being part of your lives in a small way by reading about you, improves me and my running. Always something to learn here, always a good place to belong!
Answers: I already take D3 vitamins daily, as well as a few others. I have fluorescent lights, that pretty much stay on when I am awake. I do not like cold and not a fan of winter. Snow is only great on TV and postcards. January has always worn me out.

Tripped on concrete bump in road (6.25 miles in), body plant, tore my gloves, scraped my chin, wrists will probably hurt in the morning.16 -
I ended up enjoying a 6 mile walk today instead of a run. I just wasn’t feeling a run, and I was able to chat with my bestie who lives far away while out.
@Camaramandy648 That is some awesome running! Sorry about your job, but it sounds like you need someone more appreciative of you anyway.
@AlphaHowls Hope you aren’t too sore tomorrow from your fall.
@TheMrWobbly Great job on your run!4
