Hill repeats this morning. The plan said run 10 mins warmup then uphill for 20 seconds then back down again x6, 10 minutes cooldown. 20 seconds didn't seem like much of a hill to me, the hill I normally do repeats on is 1 minute up, so I ignored the prompts on my watch and stuck to my regular hill. All done it came to a little over 5km.
It was grossly humid this morning which made the run feel harder than it usually does. The weather report is showing it cooling down over the next week which I'm very much looking forward to.6 -
Hamstring was sore this morning so no run for me but I had to get out in the cool sunshine before the next storm hits. We are supposed to really get dumped on but we'll see, they've been saying it is coming everyday this week and so far nada!
I hit menopause in my late 50's, my mom in her early 50's. Everyone is different and has different symptoms. I do think it is something that should be discussed more openly and isn't something to be embarrassed about like it has been in the past. I guess in the past women thought it was the end of their life and now we know that just isn't so. I honestly think I had such an easy time of it because I had gotten so active and started running.
I have recommended this podcast individually to a couple of people but figure I will post it here too. It is a good resource and is done by women endurance athletes (triathletes, runners and cyclists) and they bring in experts in different areas. I wish it had been around when I was younger so I had more of an idea of what to expect and what to do about it. There are 16 episodes and this is one I recently listened to about nutrition requirements - https://livefeisty.com/hit-play-not-pause-eat-carbs-with-hillary-wright-elizabeth-ward/
They also have several other podcasts: an IronWoman podcast, one on cycling, etc...6 -
There was a good BBC programme on the menopause that I watched with my SO.
Work is interfering with life and especially running at the moment. It is recovery week and I have a niggle in my left foot so I'll take it this meant to be and keep to the minimum the training plan has.
The RtW2021 challenge is making great strides across Spain soon to be cruising around the embalse de Ricobaya before heading into Portugal, our 12th country so far!11 -
My kickboxing class was cancelled last night. I ended up a 2.25 mile walk around my neighborhood. I go on-call today for the next week. I hope to get in some runs, although they might end up being a couple of short ones spread out, depending on what is going on.

I've not posted since the beginning of the month but have been doing a little bit of running. Both work and weather have been horrible but hey its January. I've read back over all the posts and it seems most of us have struggled a bit this month.

Low 20s F and snowing this morning, so treadmill seemed like a good plan. Got to hear "The Stroll," "Sugartime," and "I Fall to Pieces" during the run.
When you pop in here claiming your December 2021 mileage, what accomplishments will you have made?
PUT THE FUN BACK IN THE RUN!

@katharmonic Thanks. Pre-surgery, I only counted walking miles that were 3.5 mph or faster, so, to me 3.0 mph feels pretty slow. I'll try. If it's too much, I can always change my mind. LOL You're speed work on the treadmill sounds intense, especially with a mask on. Stupid Garmin. What does he know anyway? Glad you were able to get your tire replaced. Do you have any idea where you are running over the debris? Stupid question. If you knew, you would avoid it!
Nice run @kgirlhart !
@kirstymn Nice on the hill repeats. They are so hard, but feel so good when you are done!
@marisap2010 I hope you are able to get some runs in around work. It's hard. I don't know how most of you all do all the running you do AND work. You're awesome.

@Tramboman this made me LOL. My random running playlist includes songs which include highly motivational or apt lines such as 'I'm just a sucker for pain', 'when your legs don't work like they used to', 'I would do anything for love, I'd run right into hell up that hill and back' and 'whip, whip, run me like a racehorse'. They tend to pop up (or maybe my brain just registers them more) in weak moments, making me really laugh out loud and keep going.9 -

Although I didn't listen to them with those thoughts in mind, I guess it makes perfect sense!!!4 -

No run for me today. It was 28°F this morning and I live in Texas so that is too cold for me. I'm planning to run in the morning when it is supposed to be 38°F. That's still too cold for my liking, but not cold enough to stop me from running.5
-
@quilteryoy LOL, no I'm not driving through scrap yards or something so who knows where I'm managing to be lucky enough to run over metal and impale it in my tire.

I did a short treadmill warmup before strength training this morning. Once again, I intended to meet up with a friend later to run some more, but she was running too late and it was super cold out. So I stayed at work longer to get things done and decided the bare minimum running would have to do for today. The problem is, it's supposed to be even colder the next two days so things are not looking promising for wanting to run outside at all. The long run is not looking very appealing.5 -
@kgirlhart I blew off my run because of the cold too! It was only in the 30s so not too bad but supposed to be in the 50s tomorrow which was my planned rest day, so I swapped. Last year I was all “I’m so hardcore, I will run in anything!” But this year I am all about the comfort. Got nothing to prove.5

Tuesday my husband and I got out to Stanky Creek for the first time since last year’s winter series ended. We are running our own private Winter series since the local off-road series is in-person and we aren’t comfortable with the Covid risk, but we are planning on doing the official courses and comparing our times to the results.
Every year we do the Stanky Creek race and every year we vow to run technical trails more often so Stanky Creek doesn’t leave us feeling trashed! And then we end up not doing it. Last year it was because Stanky Creek has no potty but is too near civilization to use the outdoors, so when it stopped being safe to use a nearby restaurant bathroom, it was outside my “pee leash” (aka the distance from home I can drive without needing to use a bathroom.) But! A whole year has passed, and due to Covid I have gone from being a person who absolutely had to pee immediately before, after, and maybe during a long run, to someone who can tough it out for four, five hours without a john. So now I can drive all the way to Bartlett and run for two hours and drive home and not die.TMI, I know, but I guess every cloud has a silver lining.
This year’s winter off-road series has not one but TWO races at Stanky Creek! The 8k has always been there, but this year the 5k is there too, on a new course which my husband and I were not familiar with. So, rather than try to figure out the course while racing it, which was how we did the 3k, we decided to go out for a practice run and hopefully memorize the course, then race it next week.
One thing you gotta know about Nesbit park, where Stanky is, is it’s possible to get absolutely witch-led back in there. It’s theoretically a bunch of mountain bike trails, but there’s very little traffic or upkeep, most trails are overgrown and easily confused with erosion spillways, and the trails crisscross and spiderweb with no markings. Even GPS doesn’t really help because for some reason the signal is bad and takes several minutes to catch up. In the past, at Stanky Creek, while trying to practice for the 8k, my husband and I have had serious, near marriage-ruining arguments over his map-reading skills. He was once a Ranger Pathfinder, responsible for leading soldiers through the jungles of Panama, which sort of implies he should be able to find his way out of a suburban park! So, to cut to the chase: this time we only got turned around twice, and each time only for a few hundred feet. Improvement! There is still one bit where the path we ran doesn’t match the overlay from the course map, but... there’s also no path there and Strava heat map indicates no human soul has ever gone the way the course map indicates. So... there’s that. I feel like maybe the course map is drawn wrong?
The other thing to know about Stanky Creek is it’s called that for a reason. It’s mostly lowlands and creek beds and drainage for the nearby town of Bartlett, and it’s slick, muddy, up and down, and filled with roots. There are long stretches with so many steps and roots that it feels like running those drills where you step in tires. At one point you run through the creek, so your shoes are guaranteed to be wet. If you are lucky you faceplant in slick black stanky mud! My husband made up a little blues song about it: “Oh Stanky Creek, you so stanky.... Stanky Creek, you so stanky... I fell in the Stanky Creek, now I’m stanky too...”
If you are used to running nice level roads and even trails, which we are at the moment, 3.1 miles of those stepped roots feels like 8 miles of even roads. I wore my Altra timps, which are light and make me feel more balanced when hopping around, but also put extra stress on my Achilles’ tendons because they are zero drop. However, my tendons felt fine afterwards, good sign. My knee is a little spongy though from all the sideways jumps.
We ran the 5k course then walked it a second time to solidify our memory of which way to go. I’m not sure how we plan to race it, since the first half mile is over the road to the park gate, and the road is closed on the day. Without the road closure you have to run uneven sidewalk part of the way, then wait for two stoplights at busy intersections. This part is the same on both the 8k and 5k courses, so I have run it before and know that it’s the best place to make up time for the race, so you can relax a little and be careful on the more technical trails. Last year I seem to recall I ran the first half at 8 minute mile pace, which is sprinting for me - can’t do that on the sidewalk, not to mention a two/three minute wait to cross the road! I was hoping to be able to compare my time to the people who ran the official race, but don’t see an easy way to run it comparably. Possibly we can pause it at the intersections, but even so, it will be much slower than if the road were blocked.
Apart from that, the new 5k is a nice fun course. All the trickiness of the longer run, but not so long as to be exhausting. Looking forward to seeing how fast we can do it!
We took some pictures of each other running to make up for not having the official race photographer!

Hey all.
Been away for the last couple of days. Went out of town for work. Ate too much far far too much.
Good news of that though, my 8k run this morning was fantastic. It was so so easy. I settled into a 6:15/km pace and could have gone so much faster.
Back in the food wagon from tomorrow. For the month of Feb I'm going to stick to calories every day.
And hey, I'm running 13k tomorrow. Should also be easy as!9 -
