@avidkeo - Congratulations!! Seems like a fantastic race!
@Teresa502 - That sounds like a great Challenge! Were's the requisite medal and swag picture though?2 -
@martaindale Sorry about your HM getting canceled at the last minute. Sorry the AirBnB folks weren't nicer about you not showing up. I hope you enjoy your virtual HM next weekend.
Beautiful place to hike @katharmonic ! Glad it wasn't too cold.
Eleven icy miles is awesome @Scott6255 ! It'll be better in the spring.
Love the pictures @Avidkeo ! Great time on the HM too! Great race report. Those winds can be brutal. The post race nap with a 4 year old sounds heavenly.
@Teresa502 Great job finishing your challenge! I can't believe it's been that long either. I was at Cape Canaveral, helping to launch the first GPS satellites. We did a rush to get one up that would help with the navigation in the desert. Got a really neat letter from a General over there, I have a copy somewhere, thanking us for our help. I love the swag you got!

@martaindale hugs in the canceled race, and the air bnb people. Some people just don't get it.2

@skippygirlsmom Glad the cast is coming off in a week. Hopefully you can get around better after that!
@AlphaHowls Wow! Just Wow! It is crazy that you are doing those miles by running laps in your basement. You are more of a beast than I thought!

I had looked at my thermometer wrong this morning and thought it was 50°F. I started to get ready to take Tippy for a walk and decided to look again before I put on my light sweat shirt. Good think I did. It was 30°F! I guess it was wishful thinking.
I wrapped up and went into the neighbor's field for our normal walk. Didn't quite turn out "normal" as I slipped and fell in the mud. I'm just glad that it all happened in a split second so that I didn't have time to react. Had I had more time, I would have probably put my hands down to try to break my fall and could've hurt my sternum or hands or elbows. As it was, I landed straight down on my derriere, and popped right back up. No harm. No foul...unless you count the "foul" mud on my sweat pants.
I had planned to walk to mom's after that, but it was just too cold. I drove down instead and then, after I got home, walked another mile on the driveway while dinner cooked. It was still cool, at 37°F, but better than earlier.7 -

Went out around noon, hoping the ice would be melty and the footing a bit less slick. It wasn't too bad, but I definitely slipped a bit here and there. Maybe tomorrow morning will be good.

Hi Im new here (but an old MFP-er with a long break) and went for a interval walk/run yesterday so I thought Id join in this challenge. Im not going to set a number goal because I typically do dancercise type workouts and have recently taken up power yoga. But my goal is to have a few more of these interval runs during February.
When I was young my specialty was sprints/100m so I have never worked my way up to any long distance running. Thankfully the weather here right now is mild and warm so a nice circuit of the local lake is really enjoyable.
Looking fwd to (not forgetting to) sharing my progress!9 -

2/20: 6.37 miles

It was another beautiful day so I went for a run. I ran a little over 6 miles. I was kind of slow, but it was a good run. It was so nice to get out after a week of being cooped up inside. I was almost warm at 55°F even though I wore shorts and a t-shirt. It was nice to be warm though. I saw a lot of robins again today. Not as many as yesterday, but still a good amount.
Congratulations on your race @avidkeo! Your sub 2 is definitely in reach. Great pictures too. Looks like a lovely place for a race.
Congratulations on finishing your Dessert Storm Challenge @teresa502. Nice swag!
I'm sorry about your race going virtual @martaindale.
@quilteryoyo I hope you are ok after your slip in the mud.

Where I was the footing was crazy! My husband and I rescued three stuck cars during a four mile run! It was actually worse than before it started to thaw.
We had all sorts of conditions: ankle deep slush, narrow icy ruts from traffic, broken water mains (two!) making ankle deep floods, and one backroad which had a surface exactly like a well-groomed skating rink. Turns out my Salomons are groovy on ice, but my husband’s Merrills are not. On the other hand he can run in churned up ice much better than I can. I just can’t handle it when I don’t know how deep it’s going to be each time I push off.
It was a fun if slow run and the sun was beautiful. Also I felt really boss being able to rock a car out with just one other person helping.
As we turned onto our road we saw a car coming so we started to get up on the sidewalk until we realized the car was driving backwards. “What on earth?” my husband said, and I said, “Bet you he pulled out, couldn’t get up the hill, tried to turn around and drive back home and couldn’t turn.” Yep! That was exactly what had happened. We watched the guy back up a quarter mile down the street to his driveway and back into his driveway. “Better part of valor?” I asked and he said, “I am telling my manager to get stuffed.”
Still under a boil water alert, which is irritating, and our heater died this morning which is even more irritating. But I saw a nuthatch, so that’s good! All the birds were so delighted at the nicer weather that they could barely find time to eat, they were soaring and singing too much! This hill was slick enough that we took a break and went skating on it.6 -
rheddmobile wrote: »I wasn’t sure today whether I was going to run or tough it out on the stationary bike. Running in the snow last time was fun in a kind of “well now I can say I’ve done that” way, but I felt no urgent need to repeat the experience. Plus we got another several inches of snow today.
But then we had a minor crisis - I was unable to get bird seed anywhere. Kroger delivered yesterday but the only seed they had left was one small bag of cockatiel feed which lasted my cold feeder birdies less than a day. Home Depot had seed but cancelled all deliveries due to weather. Amazon not delivering. Roads completely undriveable. I felt miserable after doing my stretches outside and watching the little juncos and sparrows hopefully pecking at nothing and looking at me trustingly. Little birdies like that can die literally overnight in very cold weather if they don’t have food to power their little engines. I was complaining when I thought, hey, Home Depot is really not that far, why not run there?
We never go in that direction when running because the roads are very unsafe. There’s a big bridge and overpass, and the bridge has a homeless encampment underneath it, and there are people coming off the overpass in all directions at highway speeds, and no sidewalks. Nearer my house there is a half mile stretch of road with MORE THAN ONE cross with stuffed animals piled next to it marking the death of a child pedestrian. The city took notice of TWO little children on two separate occasions getting flattened, lowered the speed limit put in a bike lane here, and in order to gently encourage the absolute nitwits to not drive in the bike lane, they put a parking lane between the road and the bike lane. So what do people do? Now they use the bike lane to illegally pass on the right whenever anyone drives the speed limit.
So yeah, we don’t run there, because we like living! But! Today it’s snowing and Memphians are allergic to snow! So no cars on the road.
Home Depot turns out to be only a mile and a half away. Snow still pretty deep and now there is a layer of ice in there, but we made a little better time than last run since it was packed better, first mile was 13 minutes even with frequent stops to get off the road and stand in the bushes and wait as cars passed. There were a few cars after all, but not nearly as many. The bridge was a little hair raising (no sidewalks and no shoulder) but most people were willing to hog the center of the road and let us have the sides. The homeless have hopefully found shelter elsewhere. Had to wait 15 minutes for Home Depot to sort out our order, and then we were on our way home with 28 lbs of birdseed!
I have always been tempted to do a ruck run. My husband, who was an Airborne Ranger, was not so enchanted by the idea. We don’t own backpacks anymore since ours were stolen, so we weren’t sure how we planned to get sacks of seed home. But we have swag bags! So we put our arms through the straps and clipped the swag bags in front with carabiners (also from swag bags) and it worked pretty well.
Birdies were so pleased to see me! It felt very gratifying to watch my yard full of dozens of birds making up for lost time stuffing their faces.
View from the bridge over the Nonconnah, covered in snow.
Gerry-rigged swag bag rucksack!
I love this! Great job! I've been wanting to run in the snow but the ice terrifies me im afraid ill sprain an ankle!3 -
Welcome @slender4 ! This is a very supportive group....and chatty.
@kgirlhart Glad you were able to get out for a nice run. I'm okay, so far. I really expected it to be sore or bruised this morning. So far, so good.
@rheddmobile I'm glad you enjoyed getting out and made the best of all of the conditions you encountered. The ankle deep slush would have been the worst for me. You are a "boss," getting those cars unstuck. Glad the neighbor made it back home. Hope things are even warmer/better for you today. Sorry about the heater..horrible timing. Glad the birds are back. I love nuthatches.

Sunny, 10 degrees F, and just a light breeze from the south. Heard a couple of song sparrows and my poor lonely red winged blackbird; saw fewer deer tracks than I expected, but a lot more squirrel tracks than I anticipated. I was going to have my wife take a picture of my ice beard, but when I looked at my reflection in the sliding glass door, I couldn't tell where the white beard stopped and the ice started.
Many years ago I started keeping track of when we saw the first robins, because I got tired of thinking they were early or late but had no way of knowing for sure. Three of the past four years the robins were already back, so I think I can safely say they'll be late this year.
When you pop in here claiming your December 2021 mileage, what accomplishments will you have made?
PUT THE FUN BACK IN THE RUN!
Return to a good running weight of 175 lbs (second attempt)8 -
Great job, @Avidkeo !!!
@martaindale I'm sorry about your HM. By now most of us know that disappointment all too well.
I'm a bit behind on reading and posting, but have skimmed the posts and given likes and hugs where appropriate! The weather here has been warming up and I'm cheering on the melting snow. I did my February half-marathon distance run yesterday. What a difference clear sidewalks and sunshine make for the whole run! I ended up taking off my jacket, and really wished I had brought a lighter mask so I could take off the buff. I went the whole way around my new city, with a brief detour through the woods. The trails were still snow-covered, though, and Brooks Ghosts are awesome road shoes, but pretty useless on snow.
Now that I can see the sidewalks, I hope to venture out a little further from my known routes7 -
Hopefully, this is the last post for a while where weather is an issue! Everything froze overnight, so I headed to the gym and made use of the treadmill. Sunday mornings are pretty quiet there and I was able to stay away from everyone else. But, it's already in the 40's and it's supposed to stay above freezing overnight. Of course, they're calling for showers tomorrow morning. So...fun.

Congratulations @Avidkeo!!! Fantastic time especially as your comeback race. You are definitely on the verge of a sub 2. The course looks gorgeous. I'm sure the headwinds were tough. You managed it well though! I'm glad you got your race experience even if it wasn't quite the spectacle that you want a race to be. Love your pics especially with your kids.
@teresa502 congratulations on completing your Desert Storm challenge. You did 218 miles in a month yourself or between you? That's a lot! I can't believe it's been 30 years either. Wow.
@quilteryoyo oh gosh - glad you didn't get hurt in the fall! Thank goodness you didn't brace yourself and managed to bounce right back up. I'm sure that shook you for a bit though. Also thinking it was 50 degrees and getting 30 must have been a surprise Good for you for sticking with it.
HI @slender4. Welcome to the group. Do you have a plan you are working on such as Couch to 5k for building up your walk/run intervals? If not, you might look into that. Many here have used it successfully to get started.
@rheddmobile way to get a challenging run in and be a superhero rescuing stuck cars along the way. Sorry about the water and heater, hope all is well for you soon.
@polskagirl01 good job on your February HM! Glad you had some clearer roads to explore around more.

I met a friend this morning to attempt to run the lake trails on a gorgeous blue sky day. She work Yak Trax and I wore microspikes but I regretted it and should have just gone with my trail shoes alone. It was hard work with the mostly packed trail but soft snow on the top. I found it really challenging today. But we had fun and the sparkly snow and blue sky was so beautiful

I am so hopelessly behind - I think ~500 posts at this point I miss reading all your updates, especially when you post pics - it makes the world seem a smaller. I hope to spend some time to at least skim previous posts, but for now, please excuse my lack of commenting!
The last couple of weeks I've been working so late at night I haven't had the energy to get up at 5am to run, so I've had to pack my gear to change at work to run in the afternoon - not something I usually like doing in the summer, but at least I'm getting it done and the weather has been beautiful. I got a bit of heat stroke after my long run last Friday, then the following Monday I was out in a torrential rain storm (it was wonderful - even if I did get lots of crazy looks!)6
