Had to skip out of work a bit early today to take advantage of a gorgeous afternoon. It was right around 60 degrees and sunny and I wore short sleeves outside for the first time this year. Hard to believe it was less than 20 degrees a few days ago. Anyway, I met up with a friend who is still coming back from an injury so it was a slower run but very nice to be out and have a chance to catch up while enjoying an afternoon escape.6 -
@vs_shine Welcome. Good to have another tennis player here. You're doing great.
@RunsOnEspresso Yeah for eating before you run! It does make a difference - for me anyway.
@shanaber I hope you were able to get a run in between the rain shower. Cold and windy would equal treadmill for me. LOL3 -

It was sunny and 68°F with a slight breeze when I got home from work today. Pretty near perfect weather for an easy run (for me). I went by feel and tried to take it slow and easy. It was slightly slower than Saturday's run, but a lot faster and easier than Monday's. I'd call that a success.5 -
@AlphaHowls - how many total miles are you up to now? Have you made it all the way around yet?
177.08 so far for March

Another 6 miles this morning for me. It was ridiculously windy today, but otherwise it was really nice. I love being able to wear shorts and a tank top. The first couple of miles were tough and I had to keep reminding myself to relax and not worry about trying to run fast. It was a pretty slow run, but my pace was steady and I got into a nice groove and really enjoyed the run.

I haven't run yet today, plan to run home from a work meeting later, but aren't these pretty?
I bought them a while back on sale, and am really liking the rose-gold colored shiny logo & accents.11 -
Sounds like a nice run @kgirlhart !
You are doing great @vs_shine !
Nice shoes @polskagirl01 ! I can never find any really pretty ones in my size. That's what I get for having huge feet. LOL I do like their shiny logos though - and the shoe laces.2 -
@polskagirl01 I love the color! Bright shoes are my favorite.1

Cloudy, low 60s F, with a stiff wind from the south today. Looking back at my data, I realized that the September run that yesterday's time was approaching was the last leg of my (our) virtual Boston Marathon in memory of @PastorVincent.
When you pop in here claiming your December 2021 mileage, what accomplishments will you have made?

This morning’s run was nice at 37F at 5:00 am. It was pretty uneventful and quiet out – we saw no stray animals or people!
This weekend was supposed to be Peyton’s Wild n Wacky 50k in Mt. Pleasant, SC. I was on a 2-person relay for the event. Me and a few other girlfriends were heading down for the weekend. Some of you may remember this event from when I ran it last year. The race is in memory of a little boy (Peyton) who loved running, helped his dad lead a running group, etc. who passed away when he was only 9 years old. His parents have put on this race every year since 2013 in his honor. This would have been my third year participating. It sells out quickly. It’s wild n wacky because you run a 5K every hour on the hour for 10 hours. You can run solo, 2-person or 4-person relay. You can’t start a 5K until the top of the hour and you have to be finished with that 5k within the hour. Sounds like no problem but as the day goes on I find myself get slower and slower on each loop. Anyway, the organizers were notified February 1 that they had to cut back on the number of participants this year, no spectators would be allowed, etc. and instead of picking and choosing who could come, they ended up cancelling it for this year. Although disappointed, we already had a house rented so we decided we would go down anyway. Tuesday evening as I was leaving work I get a text from the Airbnb host cancelling our house reservation because of a maintenance issue that could not be resolved in time for our visit. We looked for alternate housing but this late we could not find anything comparable in the same price range. Pretty bummed about that but I’m trying to tell myself there is a reason for everything and for some reason God did not want us there this weekend.
Love those Brooks @polskagirl01! I have to buy wide size and like @quilteryoyo they never have any pretty ones in my size!

@Teresa502 So sorry your planned weekend didn't work out. In a way, it's good that the race was cancelled because you wouldn't have had a place to stay. It's still a bummer though.1

Took Tippy for her walk after work today. It was a warm, partly cloudy day, with temperature of 70°F. I wanted to take advantage of the nice afternoon since rain is in the forecast. I felt like I was walking faster, and, it turns out I was.5 -
@teresa502 that's so disappointing about the race and your weekend plans. It sounds like such a great experience. Hope you can find something fun to do this weekend and maybe next year's event will be extra special.
@polskagirl01 those shoes are pretty! I want to get them - they're Ghost 13s?

I did 1.3 miles on the treadmill to warmup before strength training this morning. Then after work met a friend for 3.2 miles outside. It was still warm in the low 60s but getting windy. Luckily it didn't end up raining today. There was a pretty sunset and it was a good run.
Tomorrow is supposed to be still nice but a bit cooler in the 50s. Then it dips down again. Which means I really SHOULD do my long run tomorrow if I can find the time and talk myself into it.

I ran 5.4 miles this morning. It was even windier than yesterday. It would have been perfect running weather, but the wind just made it really feel tough. Tomorrow will just be a short run before yoga. I do kind of like having a short run before yoga. I am going to try to get to bed early, so I may not be able to catch up on the thread until tomorrow or Saturday.

*So, my 2021 resolution is to hike/run all 193 (or 195 depending on your source) countries of the world this year. This could be difficult, since I don’t have a passport. But YouTube to the rescue! I have been using the site to take train “trips” recently, and have found them strangely motivating. Why not use Youtube vlogs to hike/run the world (and learn something about each country)?

Of course when I wore the NEW pair for my 8k run yesterday, I started getting a knee "niggle" around 6k. It worked itself out though, so we'll just call it breaking them in. No run today, planning to run on Saturday and then do somewhat of a cutback/taper week because I'm signed up for a 20k race next Saturday. Haven't heard anything; hope it happens.
Sorry about your race and accommodation cancelations @Teresa5027 -
Race report! Sorry it’s late, I’ve been kicking back and relaxing because this was the final race of my husband’s and my Unoffical Private Winter Race Series! 8 races, 4 distances, road and trail, trail races on the same courses and same conditions as the official MRTC Winter Off-Road Series. It’s been a blast, hopefully we will be able to run the real series next year.
Warning, it’s long!My husband and I ran the last race in our private Winter Series on Tuesday. The 8k at Stanky Creek, aka Big Stanky (as opposed to the 5k which we decided to call Little Stanky.)
Big Stanky is a lot of race for such a short distance - it’s mostly mountain bike trails, and is the closest thing to a “technical” trail race that we get around here, where trails are mostly flat and well-groomed. It starts on the road in front of the park, then cuts into the woods, up and down a series of packed dirt bike ramps, up and up and up a winding series of steps created by tree roots, down several gullies and across creeks, and finally a steep plunge and jump across Stanky Creek itself, then one last scramble across a gravel trail to finish at the parking lot.
We set out to duplicate the conditions of the official Winter Off-road series race which had been held the previous Sunday. Reports from the race said the course was nice and dry and in good condition (rare at this time of year! Stanky is usually a mudfest!) and the weather was perfect, mid 60s, sunny, light breeze. Our conditions Tuesday were almost identical. Couldn’t have had a nicer day! My legs were still feeling the effects of racing the 10k at Shelby Farms five days earlier, but we wanted to get the 8k in before the weather changed.
I took a look at the results for the ladies in my age group before we started. There’s one lady in particular who I regard as my doppelgänger - in previous years, I have been slightly faster over shorter distances and she is faster over longer distances. So far this year that’s been holding true - my time at the 3k was faster by a single second, and I came in right after her in the 5k and 10k. Her time in the 8k was 54:44, which works out to an 11:01 mile pace. So, aiming for 11 minute miles. All right! My time in the 5k, Little Stanky, worked out to a 10:27 pace, so I knew I could run that fast at Stanky Creek over similar terrain, now I just had to keep it up over 2 more miles!
The first mile of Big Stanky is the least technical, including the stretch on the road and a more or less even run down to the bike obstacles, so I planned to run hard there and bank some time for the more technical sections later. The third mile is probably the hardest, the fourth is a little easier except by then you’re tired, and the fifth has a couple of nice sections which are even enough to sprint - if you have any gas left in your tank by then.
So, my first obstacle was finding a place to pee before the race! Nesbit park is about a 40 minute drive from my house, no restroom, and because of Covid I can’t do what I used to do and stop at a nearby restaurant. Normally I would go in the woods, but it’s winter, there are no leaves on the trees, and the beautiful weather meant the park was chock full of people! We headed off the trails, thinking surely no one would be back there, and ran into a young couple canoodling. Headed behind a massive stack of brambles and poison ivy and here comes an escaped toddler and his grandpa! Ahhhh! Finally got the job done but it was ridiculous.
Second obstacle, not getting lost. Nesbit park is a maze. In years past, while practicing, we have always gotten lost, and sometimes even gotten into fight over getting lost. This year we had prepared - we took marking tape and went over the course as shown on the website. Of course, the posted course on the Series website turns out to be not the way the racers went on the race day itself - they changed the start to avoid closing the road. But! I came armed with a Strava route based on data from someone running the actual race. We walked the changed part and marked it before starting. There were FIVE possible wrong turns in the quarter mile from the road to the bike obstacles! The good news is, it appeared that the trail markers we had set up in practice were undisturbed.
Our race started off just as planned, except that there was a child riding a mountain bike on the mountain bike obstacles! So we had to pause for a moment and make a mad dash for it when the way was clear. First mile still on target, 10:35. Second mile, starting to get tricky, again right on pace, 11:03. Third mile, the one I call the Stairmaster, basically a mile of jumping uphill over tree roots, bang on, 10:59.
One of the things that makes Stanky Creek fun is that it’s mostly true singletrack, along ridges and through furrows, treacherous footing, and there are plenty of places where if you set a foot wrong you will launch yourself head-first into the trunk of the nearest tree. Both my husband and I have done this in years past! In fact we have joked that you haven’t truly run Stanky Creek until you have faceplanted IN Stanky Creek, which is black mud runoff from the nearby town of Bartlett. If I’m going to fall, usually I do it during mile 3 by catching a toe on a root and catapulting myself into the ground, or slipping on the rotating muddy log “bridge” for bicycles, which for runners is worse than if they just left the mud alone.
Well, I ran that part just fine, was slowing down to get a good steady run down into one of the steep descents across a gully, and it was like someone suddenly nailed my foot to the floor! Some helpful park maintenance person, presumably trying to prevent the trail from washing out any further, had poured concrete sort of kind of across part of the trail and into the gully, and because I was looking ahead and not at my feet, I didn’t see the terrain change when I stepped on it with only one foot. The rough concrete surface grabbed the lugs of one shoe compared to the soft dirt under the other foot, and smack down I went!
I wasn’t really hurt - one skinned knee and a bruised hip, hands dirty - but it shocked the wind out of me and threw me off my stride. My husband said trust me to find the only four-by-four foot square area of concrete in the whole park and fall on it. I jumped up and continued running, but quickly found my footwork was shaky and I didn’t feel comfortable going at full speed over tricky bits. I took a walk break and got some stamina back, but never fully recovered. And my sloppy footwork led to me catching a stick between my feet and tripping myself a little later.
Mile 4, including my fall, 12:35.
So far we had successfully avoided getting lost, due to our trail markers. But now we came to a three way fork in the road, and it wasn’t at all clear from the Strava route which vague bend in the path went the right direction. “I can’t believe we didn’t mark this!” I yelled, as we plunged down what seemed like probably the right path. “I don’t remember a fork there at all!” my husband shouted back. “And the Strava heat map says no one has ever gone that way, I swear it wasn’t there before!”
Spoiler: he was absolutely right. Two new trails had been plowed out of the virgin earth since the last time we had been there a month earlier. Read on to discover why.
It turned out we had guessed the correct path, although our hesitation cost us several seconds. By the time we reached the creek jump my legs were feeling a little more steady, and we managed a respectable sprint to the finish. Time - 57:11 - mile time 11:26. Not what I had been aiming for, but good enough for 5th in AG if I had been running the race, behind my doppelgänger who was 3rd and one other person who is usually slightly slower than I am. I feel like I could probably have managed 4th if I hadn’t fallen, not quite in good condition enough to have kept up my starting pace and caught the lady in 3rd. Overall what I would call respectable compared to my performance in previous years! And we survived Stanky Creek!
Staged race photos, taken at the same location as the photos from the official race photographer! We could identify it by this diagonal branch! Also, my poor knee!
So, that’s the wrap on our private Winter Series for me and my husband, four runs on trails and four on roads. Comparing our performance on the same courses as the official off-road trail series to the results of the series, and adding up the points for my finishes in each race, I would have been 2nd in AG out of 23, with awards three deep - the fastest lady in my AG is just blisteringly fast and took 3rd overall, making her ineligible for AG awards, and the second fastest lady took the senior master award. My doppelgänger won the AG, besting my times in every race but the 3k, and I am right behind her in every race but Big Stanky. I feel kind of bad that she didn’t get the chance to beat me for real and wave her trophy in my face, since last year I knocked her off the podium in a way that was deeply unsatisfying to her - we were tied, and I got an extra point for finishing all four races in the series. Hopefully we will get the chance to meet in person and whoop the tar out of each other next year!
Remember the mystery of the three way fork in the road? After the race my husband and I went for a walk, and decided to follow the Little Stanky course for a change of scenery. We didn’t get very far because of this:
That’s the long wooden bridge across the creek, built and signed I believe by the Boy Scouts, and it has just been OBLITERATED by a giant fallen tree! The tree looks healthy and it appears all the rain soaked the ground so much that the roots just gave way. Good thing Little Stanky had already been run, because ain’t nobody going that way now! The gully is pretty much impassible without the bridge. And thus... there are several new paths which have been hastily carved out to steer people away from that section of park! Aha! Mystery solved, my husband is NOT going insane!7 -
@rheddmobile GREAT JOB on your adventures, I mean, the race series!3

Pretty shoes, @polskagirl01!
Great job on your race, @rheddmobile!
It was beautiful and 75F yesterday afternoon, so I broke out the shorts and blessed my neighbors with my pasty white legs and my new plaid Brooks!6 -

I have to say, even though I don't respond a lot, I do read and you all are such a positive, upbeat bunch and I love it. I love the motivation. I did the challenges 2 years ago, but then "The Year That Will Be Forgotten" happened.
So:
March 3 - 3.11 miles
March 4 - 3.11 miles
March 5 - Today will be some spin and strength
Total for March - 10.22 miles
Goal for March - 70 miles
Miles to go - 59.78 miles
My huge goal this year is to get my base back that I lost last year. Before 2020, I was averaging 1000+ mile years and last year, I barely got to 600. So, my base is shot.
I ran 5 miles today without walking and felt totally amazing the entire time. Super happy with how it went and I have no doubt that I'll get to my goals this year. March goal is to get up to 6 miles comfortably and I'm sure I can do it.
March 6 - 5 miles
Total for March - 15.22 miles
Goal for March - 70 miles
Miles to go - 54.78 miles
Donated blood on Saturday morning, so I kind of expected my Sunday run to be a bit rough. Ended up being a beautiful day and I was actually 20 seconds faster per mile than what I normally run. Perhaps the slight weight loss helped .
March 7 - 3.19 miles
March 8 - Spinning after work - No running today
Total for March - 18.41 miles
Goal for March - 70 miles
Miles to go - 51.59 miles
Well...it caught up to me. Today's run with rough, but I got through it. Was a beautiful morning and considering I almost didn't get out there, I'll take it as a win.
March 9 - 4.5 miles
Total for March - 22.91 miles

Get busy for one day and you miss so much!
I'll have my first in person race in over a year (it will be 444 days to be exact) on March 20 and I'm excited but nervous. Just trying to focus on what I can control. I signed up for the last start time, so hopefully won't be a busy course.
March 10 - 3.12 miles of speed work
March 12 - 3.11 miles - Just a good ol' 5K to start the day
Total for March - 29.14 miles
Goal for March - 70 miles
Miles to go - 40.86 miles9 -
@rheddmobile fantastic race series! So impressed you took the initiative to create that on your own.
@teresa502 sorry your race got cancelled and your weekend plans fell apart. Hope you can find something fun to do this weekend as a substitute. On another note, I think its funny how we keep leap-frogging each other in the RTW Challenge You motivate me not to miss a running day!
7 miles this morning. Back to feeling the running struggle today. Was a slow pace, but effort felt hard. Stride length was short, felt stiff and uncomfortable. After the run, in retrospect, I can tell my hips felt tight, so I need to work more on hip mobility for the next few days to loosen that up.

@polskagirl01 Hope the niggle was a fluke and the shoes will be okay. Also hope your race is allowed to happen.
@rheddmobile I enjoyed reading your race report. So sorry that you fell and lost your momentum. You did great on the series. Hopefully you can race in person next year and beat your nemesis.
@pfeiferlindsey Good luck on your in person race next week! What is the distance?
@Scott6255 I hope you get your hips loosened up and feel better in your runs. Funny that you and @Teresa502 keep leapfrogging each other. I have noticed that @HonuNui is staying about 2 miles ahead of me. I'm trying my best to catch her without overdoing it.3 -

@rheddmobile great job on your personal running series!! Sorry about your fall, but great job! Enjoyed reading your report.
@polskagirl01 I wear just a 1/2 size bigger than you (US) so I get it. I have been wearing the Ghost 12s also and I should have hoarded a few too. I decided today I really need a new pair, probably before next weekend.
@pfeiferlindsey good luck on your race next weekend. I have a half marathon that day too and it's my first this year. I've run the distance but haven't done a HM race since Nov 2019 I just realized.
@Scott6255 sorry the run was a struggle again today. Hope you are able to open up the hips a little this week. I have been trying to keep up with you and @teresa502 in the RTW challenge too

I managed to do it - I convinced myself to get out there and do my long run this morning. The fact that it was 45 degrees out this morning and supposed to be only 22 tomorrow morning pushed me into it, and I didn't have anything specifically scheduled at work so I had the flexibility. The run group long run starts at 9 but I started early and got 4 miles in by myself. Then met with the group and did 6 more miles. I had hoped for just a glorious sunny morning where running feels awesome, but it was windy and cooler feeling than I expected and it felt like a bit of a slog. I told the coach when I met them that I wasn't feeling it and didn't know if I could do the 10 miles I planned and he said, well now you have us so you can do it. And so I did. That's the benefit of going to group most of the time, just being motivated and have some company when you need it. I just listened to his steady stream of stories (almost all of which I've heard many times) and kept going.
That puts me halfway to goal for this month, a bit ahead of schedule.6 -
@shanaber ohhh June is way better than September. I'll happily be American for that day lol.
@quilteryoyo yay for getting running. Such good news.
@polskagirl oh pretty! Hope the niggle was a random nothing
@Teresa502 thats so disappointing. Hope you can get another weekend away at some point.
@kgirlhart I hate running in the wind. But once I used to hate running in the rains, and now I love it. Wonder if there is anything I can do to love running in wind??
@rheddmobile wow awesome run! Glad no one was on that bridge when the tree came down, that's scary. Sounds like you had a blast despite the challenges.4 -
Yesterday I did 8k at race pace and it was fantastic. If felt amazing to stride out and get some speed on. I had the pace warning set on my watch and I'm not sure if I liked it or not. I found most of the time I was actually going too fast rather than too slow so it was good to have the reminder to slow a little. I was out of town for my run so it was an easy flat run.
Today is a 16k long run. The weather is breezy and cool. Should be a good one. Now to get off my butt and out the door!5 -
