I wound up working today, 11-3 again. Afterwards, I helped mom do a few things, so it was almost 5pm when I got home. I was glad for Daylight Savings Time, since that gave me plenty of time to take Tippy in the field for her walk and finish mine up on the driveway. I don't like to walk in the field at dusk because people have been known to go hunting back there, even though they aren't supposed to. I'm afraid my gray hair could be mistaken for a deer tail by an inexperienced hunter or one that just isn't paying close enough attention.
I realized last night that yesterday was only my 6th run back after surgery. I really should concentrate on the fact that I am doing amazingly well in my recovery and, even if it is slow, I am running! I'm not sure a whole lot of people who have had open heart surgery would be able to say that after 9 weeks.10 -

Just a short 1.5 miles today before yoga. My arm is pretty sore today after my Covid shot so I did a " wrist free" class. Other than a sore arm I feel good. I am kind of tired today, but honestly I think that is more from the time change.

@Teresa502 sounds like you made lemonade out of lemons for your weekend! Yesterday I did Egypt which included a short Red Sea snorkel segment and like Jimmy Carter, I lusted in my heart....yeah, that's on my bucket list!
@vs_shine Yes, I put my 17" laptop up on the console and watch vlogs as I run. I no longer run the neighborhood due to a nasty dog bite a couple years ago, and the a$$hats up the hill who won't fence their dog...and he attacks my boydog every time we go by.
@marisap2010 good luck on the job application!
(and I wrote all of that^ yesterday.....and the whole post poofed-so I redid a shorter version)
*So, my 2021 resolution is to hike/run all 193 (or 195 depending on your source) countries of the world this year. This could be difficult, since I don’t have a passport. But YouTube to the rescue! I have been using the site to take train “trips” recently, and have found them strangely motivating. Why not use Youtube vlogs to hike/run the world (and learn something about each country)?
7 -
@martaindale Awesome pictures! Glad you guys are enjoying your hiking.
@katharmonic Hope your back feels better soon.
Yesterday, I walked a couple of miles after work and did some ab exercises. I was pretty tired for some reason, but of course then I had so much trouble falling asleep.5 -
@kgirlhart Mom and I are going to get our first CoVID shot today. I have my fingers crossed that a sore arm is the only side affect we have.
@HonuNui I didn't realize you had gotten bit. So sorry your neighbor's aren't responsible with their dog! You are doing great with your running and touring the countries of the world.
@marisap2010 Glad you got out for a walk. I hope you sleep better tonight.3 -
Just popping in to say hi. No running for the last few days because the air quality has truly been *kitten*. Woke up yesterday to a true sandstorm outside, not kidding. The sky was yellow. I haven't seen a sandstorm of this caliber since I was in middle school. And it's still very dusty today.
On another topic, a friend's birthday is coming up and I'm thinking about getting her a Garmin. She doesn't really run, but she lifts and does cardio so having HR monitoring would be nice, and she really needs something with phone notifications and vibrating alarms. What do y'all think? Should I get her an entry level Garmin like the 45, or would a simpler wristband type thing do the job?
And I just saw some reviews of the new Enduro. Yeesh I want one of those things. 70+hr battery for running? Yes please!
@quilteryoyo You really are doing super well! Take your time getting back to things (we'll remind you).
Oh and I got my second vacc shot today. The last one knocked me out for 14 hours, no other reactions, just very very sleepy. Fingers crossed this one won't be so strong.5 -
Well they had to postpone Saturday's 20k race because of a third wave or something. I might go do it as a practice run instead. Meh.ETA: sorry if that comes across flippantly or like I don't care or take it seriously. I'm just tired of it all. Yes, I follow the rules.6
-
Hi @Scott6255 , have you tried using Strassburg socks? I had a very painful bout with PF a few years ago and sleeping in those socks made a world of difference. I've been pain free now for quite a while (knock on wood!).
3 -
@vs_shine that is an aggressive (and impressive) time goal for your HM. I wish you all the luck in the world on your training and health! Thanks for the tip, I'll look into those socks.
@quilteryoyo Yes, you are doing fantastic in your running coming back from open heart surgery just 9 weeks ago!!!! Hope your Covid vaccine goes well and you have minimal side-effects.
@polskagirl01 bummer about the cancelled race
6.4 miles this morning. Was slow, felt heavy, but wanted to take it easy to see how my feet felt. Wore Ghosts that only had 125 miles on them, and compression socks that covered my calves. No pain at all. So not sure which helped, maybe both. Next run will ditch the socks and see how it feels.

Beautiful stars shining in the sky when I began my run this morning. Clouds had moved in and obscured them by the time that I finished. Temp was a nice 41F.
Beautiful sky @nickseger. The field in the picture reminds me of early morning runs while visiting family in Illinois.
Love the hiking photos @martaindale – looks like a great family vacation!
@quilteryoyo – It is too bad that we don’t live close enough to run together more often. At least we have the occasional race that brings us together. And, yes, you are doing amazingly well 9 weeks out from surgery!
Ouch @katharmonic! I hope your back is better soon. Did you do something specific to cause the stress?
@noblsheep I read about that sandstorm that hit Beijing yesterday. The article said it developed in a Mongolian desert and raised the air quality index to 999! I immediately thought of you. I can’t imagine the sight!
I understand @polskagirl01. We’re all tired of it all. Races and other plans getting cancelled have been more of the norm for the past year.

Great! I went ahead and added it to my Amazon cart. I already had my power steering pump for my truck in there, so this incentive to go ahead and push the Purchase button

Was able to *mostly* catch up.
@Tramboman consistent as ever!
@Scott6255 i hope your feet and calves are better soon!
@quilteryoyo i am in AWE of how well you are doing! You are so fortunate and I am proud of you for all the work you did prior to now, which has surely made all the difference
@noblsheep if somebody bought me a garmin i would probably cry and pee my pants! What a great gift!4 -
@noblsheep Thank. I'll take all the reminders you give me. Sorry your air quality has been so bad. You are a great friend to want to buy her a Garmin for her birthday! I really don't have a suggestion on which to get. I think the Garmin website is helpful with which one is the best for which activities. Maybe look at that? Hope you don't have any side affects from the second shot.
@polskagirl01 Sorry about your race. At least it was just postponed and not cancelled. When is it going to be run now?
@Scott6255 Thanks. So far, so good for the shot. My arm is a little sore already. I hope it doesn't get much worse. Glad your run was pain free!
Thanks @Teresa502 ! Sounds like you had a nice run this morning. Once things open back up, I may join the running club. We'll see. I wish it was closer too.
Thanks @Camaramandy648 ! I'm sure being in good shape going into it has made all the difference.

Thank you @quilteryoyo, @marisap2010, and @Teresa502
My lower back flares up occasionally after I fell a couple of years ago on the ice. That incident was really bad and I had terrible muscle spasms because the SI joint got out of whack or something. This time no specific incident but it was bothering me a little bit for the past week or so and I was in denial about it, just kept trying to stretch more. I did too much though and the tough yoga class on Sunday pushed it into being painful enough to do something about.
I got in to see my doctor yesterday to get a referral back to my PT who helped me last time. I see the PT tomorrow. Today was a little bit better thanks to muscle relaxants overnight and I got a gentle massage this afternoon. I'm hoping to head off another really major episode by resting and being proactive with the PT.
But you all know it's hard. The bummer is that I am supposed to have an actual in person half marathon race this weekend. And that would be my half marathon for March, which I won't have time to do later if I don't get it for my HM a month challenge. But I also have a 3-day hiking trip planned the week after and that is much more important to me so I'm trying to not be stupid about it. I do still have lingering hope of running the half slowly and gently but I'm sure my PT will squash that for me tomorrow.8 -
Hey all.
@noblsheep hope the air clears soon!!
So i feel like an idiot.
I'm currently sitting in ED at work. So embarrassing.
About 9am I was driving home after dropping hubby off at the mechanic - he was collecting the car after some repairs. Decided to head home to relax for about 20 mins before starting work at 10. On my way home I started getting a bubble in my vision, hard to describe. It was really detracting but didn't affect anything. I got home and did a couple of tests looking into a mirror and realised the "bubble" was getting bigger and kinda becoming jagged.
I tried to google but couldn't really read the words. So thought I'd come into work and just ask the nurse what they thought. As I was driving in it got worse and worse until I couldn't really see properly. It was odd, like the centre of my vision was normal but went funny at the edges. I kinda realised I really shouldn't be driving but the hospital was less than half a mile at that point.
Got here, walked into Ed. A couple of Ambo guys looked at me and went are you OK? Sit down now. Nurse checked my BP which was high for me. Heart rate was a bit up as well. So they registered me and told me to wait.
About 20 mins later the vision cleared completely, though I still felt slightly headachy and just wrong. A bit shakey.
So I got put in a bed space, had an Ecg, taken bloods. BP was down to 128/78. High for me but normal.
Had to laugh, when they checked the ECG the dr commented it looks normal but it's a bit slow at only 52 beats per minute. Nurse replied "she did run 9k this morning". Ohhhh. Haha. I really like being enough of a runner that my normal resting heart rate is low.
Long story short. Everything is normal. Just waiting on bloods, probably another 30 mins. I think the upshot is ocular migraine? When I google I find pics that's perfectly describe the visual disturbances.
So that's my morning.
Oh I ran 9k of intervals this morning. It was so good and so hard. I blame the new watch lol. It was a suggested workout. Hal wasn't impressed but I'm wanting to add in some speed work. I did 9x 2min run at around 4:50 min/k then 2min around 7 min/k. The last 2 were challenging but awesome.
Can today just be over now.8 -
@katharmonic Glad you are being proactive and hope the PT helps and says you got to it soon enough that you can run the HM! But, if not, you are doing great to not worry about it to make sure you can go on the 3 day hiking trip. That should be a lot of fun and don't blame you making that a priority.
@Avidkeo When I was reading the description of what was going on, I immediately thought of an ocular migraine. I don't recall if I mentioned on here, but I used to get those a lot. Hadn't had one in years until after the surgery. I had multiple ones every day for a couple of weeks, then at least one a day. For the last couple of weeks I may have had 3 total. So, they are going away, thank goodness. I hope you don't have them anymore. If you do, you might want to mention it to your doctor, just to make sure there isn't something that suddenly caused them. Do you a history of migraines?5 -

3/2 - 4 early morning miles that felt really awesome
Total for March - 4 miles
Goal for March - 70 miles
Miles to go - 66 miles
I have to say, even though I don't respond a lot, I do read and you all are such a positive, upbeat bunch and I love it. I love the motivation. I did the challenges 2 years ago, but then "The Year That Will Be Forgotten" happened.
So:
March 3 - 3.11 miles
March 4 - 3.11 miles
March 5 - Today will be some spin and strength
Total for March - 10.22 miles
Goal for March - 70 miles
Miles to go - 59.78 miles
My huge goal this year is to get my base back that I lost last year. Before 2020, I was averaging 1000+ mile years and last year, I barely got to 600. So, my base is shot.
I ran 5 miles today without walking and felt totally amazing the entire time. Super happy with how it went and I have no doubt that I'll get to my goals this year. March goal is to get up to 6 miles comfortably and I'm sure I can do it.
March 6 - 5 miles
Total for March - 15.22 miles
Goal for March - 70 miles
Miles to go - 54.78 miles
Donated blood on Saturday morning, so I kind of expected my Sunday run to be a bit rough. Ended up being a beautiful day and I was actually 20 seconds faster per mile than what I normally run. Perhaps the slight weight loss helped .
March 7 - 3.19 miles
March 8 - Spinning after work - No running today
Total for March - 18.41 miles
Goal for March - 70 miles
Miles to go - 51.59 miles
Well...it caught up to me. Today's run with rough, but I got through it. Was a beautiful morning and considering I almost didn't get out there, I'll take it as a win.
March 9 - 4.5 miles
Total for March - 22.91 miles
Goal for March - 70 miles
Miles to go - 47.09 miles
Get busy for one day and you miss so much!
I'll have my first in person race in over a year (it will be 444 days to be exact) on March 20 and I'm excited but nervous. Just trying to focus on what I can control. I signed up for the last start time, so hopefully won't be a busy course.
March 10 - 3.12 miles of speed work
March 12 - 3.11 miles - Just a good ol' 5K to start the day
Total for March - 29.14 miles
Goal for March - 70 miles
Miles to go - 40.86 miles
Quick update for the weekend...
March 13 - 5.57 miles
March 14 - 3.26 miles
Total for March - 37.97 miles
Goal for March - 70 miles
Miles to go - 32.03 miles
So I am adding a small weekly goal for this week...I'd like to run a total of 20 miles. I think I can do it.
March 15 - Spin and weights
March 16 - 3.11 miles and weights
Total for March - 41.08 miles
Goal for March - 70 miles
Miles to go - 28.92 miles
Miles for the week (March 15-March 21) - 3.11 miles with 16.89 miles to go6 -
3/01 - 2.75 miles - 3.6 mph - Treadmill walk
3/02 - 2.00 miles - 3.6 mph - Treadmill walk

3/16 - 3.00 miles - 4.6 mph - Treadmill &0.50 walk for warm up and cool down
March total: 38.30/62 miles
Mom and I got our first CoVID vaccine shot this morning. We were both a little apprehensive about it. So far, the only side affect I have noticed is a sore arm.
It was warm outside, but I wasn't in the mood to run driveway laps and didn't want to run out the road in case I needed to abort for some reason. I also wanted to be able to control my pace, so opted for a treadmill run today. It wasn't too bad. I did intervals today....ran at 5.0/4.5 mph for 2 minutes each and then walked at 3.8 mph for one minute. Repeat until done. That worked out pretty well.7 -
@quilteryoyo nope, been lucky enough to have never had one. ED Dr agreed that's what it sounds like. I showed him the pics I found of what the visual disturbances were, he was really interested.
Bloods etc were normal so that's good.
7 -
Yikes @Avidkeo! That sounds scary. @quilteryoyo sounds like she is a great person to listen to about this, but I wonder what would have started that if you hadn't had something like that before?2

Jaggy bubbles sounds pretty classic. For my husband it usually starts at the center and spreads out - at first as he describes it it looks something like when they scramble part of a video to hide someone’s identity. Usually his last about 15 minutes.
Plan now for what to do if you notice it happening while driving - it can be a pain in the rear!
Glad you had a good run!

Husband and I got our first shots this morning.
The day started off annoying since we had appointments for tomorrow and there are supposed to be storms tomorrow (which is why I scheduled it for then in the first place since I figured I didn’t want to run in a storm) so I woke up to an email telling me all Wednesday appointments in the county were cancelled and I needed to find new ones! So much for my brilliant plan, I hadn’t thought about the shots being given outdoors. Since it wasn’t easy getting through to the site to get an appointment in the first place I was screaming at my email. But apparently something has happened between last week (when I spent three hours trying to connect to the website and felt lucky to get two of the last few appointments available in a two week period) and today. Because there were plenty of appointments still open for the same day! Dozens of appointments going unused. Not only did we not have to wait in the car, a whole crew of volunteers were standing around waiting on the two of us to finish our paperwork. I was concerned that they wouldn’t consider my husband’s exercise-induced asthma “moderate to severe” enough to qualify for 1c but they didn’t even ask what our comorbidities were, they were seeking any warm body to inject.
Anyway we had planned 10k on the Greenline but we figured we should take a rest today and tomorrow, so we did 3 miles hiking in the little park by the railroad. So far feeling fine, my husband says his arm is sore but I don’t even have soreness yet. I was wondering what my blood sugar would do since it goes up whenever I’m stressed due to illness, but so far it’s been lower than expected if anything.
Fingers crossed, if all goes well, we can go back to in-person races soon!9 -
@Scott6255 no idea. Apparently its one of those things.
@rheddmobile next time it will be pull over and stop for 30 mins. Apparently they only last about 30 mins so I can work with that.6 -

Can today just be over now.
I too immediately thought migraine. I’ve only had two or three in my life (all within a few months of each other) but I get shimmery rainbows in my peripheral vision. Pretty. And pretty weird.
Glad that’s all it is. It would have been a bit scary for a while there.

@Avidkeo - I typically get those too, often before the onset of a regular migraine and always in my left eye. It is scary and unsettling. Just like with regular migraines I think they can be set off by stress and even some foods if you are sensitive to some things. Mine are almost always stress related and have abated quite a bit since I quit working. Stress was the reason I retired early and it has had a huge impact for the good!
@noblsheep - I also saw the sandstorm news - Yikes! It is like our Santa Ana winds on steroids!
We have had both our shots and DH had not reaction at all, not even a sore arm. My arm was really sore both times, more so though after the 2nd shot. I also got sore, achy kind of sore, almost like DOMS but in my rib cage front to back. It was a strange feeling but only lasted a day and then I was fine.
I am still waiting to hear about PT. The authorization has come through so now just waiting on the appointment process. Hobbes the Vizsla and I got in just over 6 miles of mostly (slow) running with walking intervals on Saturday. I used the Peloton app set on waling workouts and ran the power walk intervals. Hamstring was fine most of the time until we were near home and then it was letting me know enough was enough and Sunday it was sore again. I did a strength workout on Monday as it was pouring rain, but we had agility last night and again the hamstring was fine, I was even surprised at one point when I was running across the field course that there was no pain. Of course today it was sore again. I can also feel when it is getting swollen which is really strange.5 -

Run group canceled last night so I went to the track and did my own speedwork in the rain. New windbreaker (that I bought because the other girls were getting them) is extremely lightweight to the point I'm afraid of tearing it, but it survived its first run and did totally keep the rain off of me. Wow! It's this one

Sorry, the site might be in Polish. Not sure where this company is based.
Today I did the "run to school pickup/dropoff" plus 6k "around the block". I really need to leave the house earlier though, instead of turning school pickup into a 1000 meter time trial6
