@Avidkeo I didn't realize that the Fenix 6 was a Garmin. Hahaha. I'm glad you are liking it. I do love the watch face.
@marisap2010 I hope the massaging helps with the calf issues. Cramps are horrible! Fingers crossed for you that you get the job!

Sunny, upper 30s F, with a light breeze from the northwest. Legs were a touch tired today, but that's to be expected. Thanks to all who offered kudos and good thoughts -- that's what keeps me going.
When you pop in here claiming your December 2021 mileage, what accomplishments will you have made?
PUT THE FUN BACK IN THE RUN!
Return to a good running weight of 175 lbs (second attempt)4 -
@marisap2010 hope your calf will be ok for your 10k. And good luck with your application for your bosses' job! Sending all the good vibes.
@teresa502 sounds like a good weekend despite your plans falling through. Good job on your monthly half!

I was happy to not set an alarm today and just get up and start the day slowly. I went for a run around 9 with a friend on the canal trail. It was mid 30s so not terrible, but during the end of the run it started snowing big flakes. It's still coming down a bit but I don't think we are getting too much. After the run I walked the dog to get that over with, and she was okay with a shorter walk today because we did 5.6 miles yesterday, which seemed to actually tire her our for once.
I went to a yoga class at a studio I've been to before but not for well over a year. They were holding open classes today for a donation to a cause that is supporting local businesses hurting because of the pandemic. I thought it would maybe be a nice easy relaxing class as it was open to anyone, but I was wrong! It was challenging. The flow was fast and it was assumed you knew all the poses by name - which I mostly do, but it seemed like a bit of a test. The end was very nice, we laid in shavasana for what seemed like a really long time and it was lovely after that tough practice. They have a smoothie bar also and before class they ask you if you want something and they will have it ready for you as you walk out. Of course I said yes to that. I had a really wonderful one with chocolate almond milk, peanut butter, dates, bananas and I don't remember what else but it was delicious.

I ran 10 miles this morning. It was a good run and faster than my usual long run pace. Today they were having a Covid vaccine clinic at our church from 10 - 2. It was first come, first served so I was planning to go up there and try to get one. So I started out being a little annoyed that I had to get up earlier than usual on a Sunday. Plus we changed to daylight savings time today so I already lost an hour of sleep. But I did want to get my long run in before I got vaccinated and I wanted to get in line early for the vaccine in case they ran out, so I got up. It was still not quite light out when I headed out, but not entirely dark so I didn't wear my noxgear. I just stayed on the main road that is well lit for about 20 minutes starting out. It was a little chilly starting out so I wore a t-shirt and shorts with my sleeves. I took the sleeves off about 2.5 miles in, but I was glad I started out with them. We have been dealing with some ridiculous winds lately and last night it was really windy and we had some thunderstorms. But thus morning was really nice. It was cloudy when I started so I couldn't really see the sunrise. But it was clearing the whole time and turned out to be a lovely morning. Since I was a little nervous about getting back in time to go get the vaccine I found myself getting faster and the last 3 miles i was under 10 minutes per mile. I did have a dog run at me today. It was right as I was coming home and I yelled at him and he ran on home. I was literally in front of my house so I was just going to stop, but when I went to stop my watch I noticed that I was at 9.98 miles, so I ran to my neighbor's house and turned around so I could get to 10 miles. Then I ran in a took a quick shower and went up to the church and got my first Covid vaccine.

@Teresa502 Sounds like you had a great time in Hendersonville with your friends! Congrats on getting your HM in too!
@katharmonic That sounds like a lovely run, but a bit cold for me. The yoga class sounds interesting. I'm like you and would think if it was open to everyone that they would explain the poses and be a "beginners" class in order to get people interested in continuing. That sounds like it would have scared people away...I know it would have me.
@kgirlhart You had a very productive day. Glad the dog went home when you yelled at it.2 -
Happy PI Day!
I ran yesterday and will get out today for a walk with the pup later.
@katharmonic - That is one of the reasons I hate most yoga classes even beginner ones online. They assume you already know the names of what you are supposed to do and move so fast. I end up stopping and restarting the videos so much that it just isn't enjoyable.
@marisap2010 - good luck with the job application! For the cramp, you may want to make sure you have enough water before you go to bed. I got one once during a run when it was hot and I was likely a little dehydrated. My calf muscle turned into a hard ball and hurt so bad. I massaged and walked it out but it hurt for at least a week and ended up a little bruised. You can also try some foam rolling if it isn't too sore.
@avidkeo - congratulations on the new toy!
@skippygirlsmom - so excited that you were able to walk your 5k! I hope your ankle isn't too sore now. Also I have never been in a race that gave shoes as part of the swag! That is so awesome!! Of course we don't have a Fleet Feet near us either.4 -
Today I got to run the Maraetai Half. Once again it was an absolute stunner of a day - cool and clear when we started but headed to be a stinker. Fortunately the 7:30am start mean that I was finished before it got too hot but some of the slower runners and walkers would have had a much tougher time.
The Maraetai course follows the road (closed - yay!) along the beach front so is largely flat - undulating is perhaps a better word for about half of it. At the end of the beach is a massive hill which we got to run up and over. This is farmland so underfoot becomes a gravel track and grass up to the trig. Its a brutal climb, something like 1km to climb 50 metres, a brief reprieve for 300 metres, and then another 500 metres to climb another 35 metres. Very happy to be able to run all the way up, but intentionally took it slowly as last year, this hill killed my legs for the final 8km home.
This year I ran well - not an 'A' race so didn't feel obliged to push it, but felt fast and free the whole way - really enjoyed the whole thing. Over five minutes faster than last year (I had just signed with my coach then) and overall an easier and more enjoyable run.
Going by how my body feels today (i.e. not a single ache or niggle) I could have pushed myself a bit harder, but I was supposed to be holding back for my upcoming A race in April, so I guess this is a good thing. I only hope the weather and my body is as good then as it was yesterday!
It was a fast and competitive course. Around 870 of us in the half. I managed 34th woman home and 8th in my age group. I'm very happy to make the top 10 percent after so many years aiming to be in the top 50 percent - it's good to see the hard work does pay off eventually.
Here's a pic of me, happy and smiling at around 16km, another at 18ish (mostly to show off the stunning course), and a finishers' pic with my friends.12 -

I have to say, even though I don't respond a lot, I do read and you all are such a positive, upbeat bunch and I love it. I love the motivation. I did the challenges 2 years ago, but then "The Year That Will Be Forgotten" happened.
So:
March 3 - 3.11 miles
March 4 - 3.11 miles
March 5 - Today will be some spin and strength
Total for March - 10.22 miles
Goal for March - 70 miles
Miles to go - 59.78 miles
My huge goal this year is to get my base back that I lost last year. Before 2020, I was averaging 1000+ mile years and last year, I barely got to 600. So, my base is shot.
I ran 5 miles today without walking and felt totally amazing the entire time. Super happy with how it went and I have no doubt that I'll get to my goals this year. March goal is to get up to 6 miles comfortably and I'm sure I can do it.
March 6 - 5 miles
Total for March - 15.22 miles
Goal for March - 70 miles
Miles to go - 54.78 miles
Donated blood on Saturday morning, so I kind of expected my Sunday run to be a bit rough. Ended up being a beautiful day and I was actually 20 seconds faster per mile than what I normally run. Perhaps the slight weight loss helped .
March 7 - 3.19 miles
March 8 - Spinning after work - No running today
Total for March - 18.41 miles
Goal for March - 70 miles
Miles to go - 51.59 miles
Well...it caught up to me. Today's run with rough, but I got through it. Was a beautiful morning and considering I almost didn't get out there, I'll take it as a win.
March 9 - 4.5 miles
Total for March - 22.91 miles
Goal for March - 70 miles
Miles to go - 47.09 miles
Get busy for one day and you miss so much!
I'll have my first in person race in over a year (it will be 444 days to be exact) on March 20 and I'm excited but nervous. Just trying to focus on what I can control. I signed up for the last start time, so hopefully won't be a busy course.
March 10 - 3.12 miles of speed work
March 12 - 3.11 miles - Just a good ol' 5K to start the day
Total for March - 29.14 miles
Goal for March - 70 miles
Miles to go - 40.86 miles
Quick update for the weekend...
March 13 - 5.57 miles
March 14 - 3.26 miles
Total for March - 37.97 miles
Goal for March - 70 miles
Miles to go - 32.03 miles

Well done @ContraryMaryMary! Looks like a beautiful day!1

@marisap2010 good luck on your 10k and with your application for new job! Maybe you should wear your shamrock shoes to the interview
@teresa502 Great job on your HM!
@ContraryMaryMary awesome HM for you too! Great results especially for not pushing really hard!!
@kgirlhart nice run and really glad you were able to get your vaccine!!
I did a HM today too. It felt harder than the last few, and I started to feel tightness in BOTH arches toward the end. PLEASE PLEASE tell me this isn't a sign of what's coming. I have been religiously working both feet for months since my last bought with PF. I'm sure it is just an anomaly!!
7 -
@marisap2010 fingers crossed on the new job.
Thanks everyone I was really excited to finish. It was a mental thing. My foot was swollen this morning but doesn’t hurt so I’m elevating and icing.
@shanaber the shoes are awesome but of course the registration reflected the cost lol. I brought a new pair of tied dyed Brooks while I was at FF and they did offer to let me swap the ones from the race if I wanted. But the race ones are GTS and are supposed to have more stability. Here’s the other pair.6 -
@shanaber I forgot it was PI day. Thanks for reminding me. Had I realized it earlier, I might have ran 3.14 miles instead of stopping when I did. Oh well.
Congratulations on your great race @ContraryMaryMary ! Love the pictures. Looks like a beautiful course.
@Scott6255 Great job on the HM. I hope it is just a fluke and you aren't getting PF again!
Love those shoes too @skippygirlsmom !2 -

March total: 32.8/62 miles
I took Tippy for a stroll in the field. The wind was a little chilly, so I was debating running on the treadmill again. I really was NOT in the mood for a run today. Not sure why. But, I decided it really was too nice to not run outside since is may be raining a lot the rest of the week. When I went out for my run it was 63°F with a 7 mph breeze. Turned out to be really nice for the run.
I did driveway laps again today, but I did NOT run up the hill. I ran most of the rest of the laps though, so actually spent more time running than I have since my surgery. I had in my head that I was running a lot faster prior to surgery. But, I went back and looked and my long driveway runs were pretty much about the same as today. That made me feel a little better about my effort, but also made me realize just how slow I have been all along. LOL5 -
@ContraryMaryMary yay looks like a lot of fun!0
-
@Scott6255 - two questions... how old are your shoes? Are your calves tight? When I had PF those were the two things my PT focused in on as typically having an affect on PF. I ended up tearing mine wearing new shoes that were probably not right for me. Now though if I feel any niggles I first check in on my calves then look to see if my shoes need updating.
Great race @ContraryMaryMary! Always nice to have a great run and cut time without really pushing yourself to exhaustion! Your friends look very hot though.
@skippygirlsmom - love the new shoes!4 -
Legs were sore and tired for days after running Stanky Creek, all that jumping up hills plus falling! So we took an extra rest day, just ran one mile and walked a lot. Lifted heavy yesterday for the first time since stapling myself a few weeks ago, hip seems fine now.
Today, easing back into our normal routine, 5k easy on the railroad access road. Lovely soft overcast day. Saw a sharp-shinned hawk close up beside the road. Tulip trees blooming everywhere, forsythia, white pear blossom.7 -

3/4 off
3/5 3.11 Denmark
3/6 3.10 Dominica and Dominican Republic

3/11 3.60 Equador, Equatorial Guinea
3/12 4.50 Eritrea, Estonia
3/13 off
3/14 3.14 Egypt...and shepherd's "pi" for supper
Total 25.68
*So, my 2021 resolution is to hike/run all 193 (or 195 depending on your source) countries of the world this year. This could be difficult, since I don’t have a passport. But YouTube to the rescue! I have been using the site to take train “trips” recently, and have found them strangely motivating. Why not use Youtube vlogs to hike/run the world (and learn something about each country)?

Congratulations on your races @skippygirlsmom and @ContraryMaryMary !!! I love the shoes, and scenery.
I went for a bike ride today, short 7.5 km but great for just getting back to it after a break for winter. I went around a mine and then a "palace". I'd probably call it more of an estate, maybe a mansion, but won't argue with them.
I had to charge my watch though, so wore my older one, and for some reason after a certain update, it just doesn't do well with cycling anymore. The map is jumpy, says my ascent/descent was 0 even though it shows the elevation profile... and then Strava interprets my pace as 46 MPH. Between the 2 apps I think I can come close to something correct, but need to either figure out how to fix it, or just not wear that watch for cycling. It works great for running & swimming.
March Goal 169k
"40 weeks of 40K" - 17 Weeks DONE! / 33 weeks left to complete the challenge.7 -
I ran my St. Patty’s 10k yesterday. The weather was sunny and about 55F when I started. I ran at a comfortable pace and finished right at my normal 10k time.
My calf didn’t bother me at all during the run, but it sure is sore now. I’ve been massaging and rolling it, and I try to drink a lot of water daily, so I wonder if the cramp was an isolated thing and maybe I pulled it during my Ripped class.5 -
@Scott6255 - two questions... how old are your shoes? Are your calves tight? When I had PF those were the two things my PT focused in on as typically having an affect on PF. I ended up tearing mine wearing new shoes that were probably not right for me. Now though if I feel any niggles I first check in on my calves then look to see if my shoes need updating.
Yep, since both feet hurt I immediately thought it could be worn shoes. But I checked and I only have 250 miles on this pair. I usually get close to 500 miles out of the Ghosts (been wearing Ghosts for several years). And yes, both calves are tight, but that's my normal. I roll them at least once a day, most days twice.
Long ago I heard that a common cause of PF was weak calves, so I do single leg calf raises 3-4 times a week.
All that being said,.no pain this morning 🤞
And since I get PF once a year, maybe I've been trying to get too much out of my shoes, and should retire this pair for a while and see if it goes with the shoes. Sure would be a good excuse to get new shoes, but I can't afford to replace shoes after only 250 miles. Oh well, see what happens ¯\_(ツ)_/¯4 -
@rheddmobile Glad your hip is behaving and you are doing better after your fall. Nice run this morning.
@polskagirl01 Nice bike ride. Watch issues are so annoying. 21st century issues!
@marisap2010 Great run. Glad your calf is okay.
@Scott6255 Glad you have no pain this morning and hope you figure out the cause.

I miss it beginning to get daylight towards the end of my early morning run. I know here in my part of the world that the daylight time is getting longer though so I will be patient and just keep charging my light which gave out on me this morning but I was almost finished anyway. It was 44F when I ran but a little breezy. I wore a sleeveless top under a long sleeve tech shirt with capris and that combo worked well.
@Scott6255 – I hope your PF is not coming back. Glad things were better today.
Love those tie-dyed shoes @skippygirlsmom! I have a pair of tie-dyed from the Vegas RNR half marathon but I like your colors better. The pair that I have are Launch I believe and don’t have a lot of support. I wear them for casual every day shoes. BTW, how is Skip doing?
@quilteryoyo – No shame in being slow! I’m slow as molasses but keep putting one foot in front of the other.
Wow @polskagirl01 – That would be some speedy biking! I took my bike to the shop for a routine service last week. They are supposed to have it ready today.
@marisap2010 – Hope the calf is feeling better soon.

My goal this month is to lose weight while successfully training for a half marathon on 4/3. I've run many halfs and a half dozen full marathons in the past, and always gain weight while training. This time, I'm counting calories and being conscious of my diet, hoping to curb that trend.
So far, I have lost about 3.1 lbs (196.2 down to 193.1).
I'm also shooting for a sub-1:35:00 half marathon, which is about a 7:14 pace. That's really aggressive for me (prior PR was 1:36:11; 7:20 pace). So far, the training has gone well!

So many race reports! You’re all doing so well! Remember this time last year when we were all devastated?
Things are looking up!
Really enjoyed reading up on everything - best I could, between things.
Still hate this job but I’m doing it because some money is better than no money.
I woke at 3:30 this morning instead of 4. I went for my run anyway because if I went back to bed, I wouldn’t get to run today.
I’m kinda tired now, lol.
Seems like the race the weekend before last took more out of me than i thought. Lots of easy runs on my schedule this week. Just very tired.
Hope everyone is having a great monday!9 -
Great racing everyone!!
And I love those shoes @skippygirlsmom ! I have a pair of tie-dyed ghosts on my shelf but I think the color is a little different. I have a purple/pink kind of tie-dye pair now and I love them. A fun show just makes me happy!
@Scott6255 Sorry to hear your feet/calves are acting up. My husband has had recurring PF issues too. He does the rolling as well and feels like it helps. He also started running with a calf compression sleeve and says it was a major help. Maybe worth a shot?
@nickseger Beautiful pic!3 -
Pics below from the last 2 days of hiking.
Day 2 was Reimer's Ranch. Before this trip I only knew of it as a climbing crag. We had never been before but knew of it because of climbing friends. None of them did it justice. It's on a river, really green for the hill country, and was an overall really pretty hike. We did a little scrambling to check out some of the climbing walls. We're going to have to go back to climb there for sure. Hiked 5.7 miles.
Day 3 was Enchanted Rock. We've been there before but it has been years. We did the loop trail today and will go back to do a few more plus the dome summit later this week. After yesterday's scrambling, this was a nice easy hike and we were done before it got busy. This park is a super popular spot, and it's beautiful. But popular also means busy so the early starts are a must. Hiked 5.3 miles.7 -
@martaindale in the past I think they only did the tie dyed in the Ghost, I'm not a big fan of Ghost so I never brought them. Can't wait to wear them.
At PT today she was very happy to hear my 5K caused no pain and did all her measurement stuff and said my range of motion is further along then she would expect at this point woohoo.10 -
@Tramboman Great job getting out in those conditions!
@Teresa502 Glad you were almost home before your lights went out. Great running. I do believe you are just a little bit faster than I am. Too bad we don't live a little bit closer - we could probably run well together.
@nickseger Nice. That is a really fast HM. I'm hoping my first one will be under 3 hours. You're doing great on the weight loss too. BEAUTIFUL picture!
@Camaramandy648 Glad you are taking it easy this week. I'm sure the time change didn't help things either.
Love the pictures @martaindale ! Those hikes must be so much fun with the family!
That is excellent news @skippygirlsmom ! You'll be back to running in no time!3 -
@marisap2010 great job on your 10k. Hope your calf will be fine.
And @scott6255 hope yours is not a PF flare up. Glad it was better today.
Welcome @nickseger! Best of luck with your goals! Keep us posted on how the training is going for your upcoming HM! That pic is gorgeous.
@martaindale that looks awesome for hiking and rock climbing. Enjoy!
@skippygirlsmom that's great news about your no pain and the great range of motion recovery!
I'm out for a few days I think with some lower back pain. Hopefully I'll be back at it soon, but currently sitting with the heating pad being cranky.
