I really wish the people in my hood would start to pay attention, THREE cars almost hit me today. Two of them neighbors, jerk off down the street from me drives 100 mph down our road all the time and turns the corner on two wheels I’ve already banged on the side of his car and yelled. Then a truck I’m watching him come at me and I’m like okay he’s just not going to give me much room (hello I’m a foot from the edge of the road), it wasn’t until he swerved in a panic did I realize he never saw me. Then coming down my street the new neighbor up the street backing out of his driveway 100 mph (see a theme on my street) and I was behind him. Okay if you are backing out normal speed I have time to cross the street, run faster or stop, but dang slow down people.
@quilteryoyo I walked out the door across my grass and you could see the look on their faces. I saw it happen, I have some weird fascination with this claw thing LOL Maybe I’m just getting older LOL Glad the tummy trouble didn’t persist
@Zoomie402 great job getting up and getting it done before shift. I’m a morning runner usually takes me a couples weeks to get in groove it I stop.
@rheddmobile I can say I have watched the guys a million times (since I’m working at home most the time) they are really truly careful. They have the guy driving and then two guys on the ground on each side of the truck he’s dumping in watching. He misjudged mine by like a foot. They installed the new box, actually much nicer than what I had, added the numbers and everything. I gave them $20 to have lunch they were like no no no we broke it. I said listen I didn’t like that box to begin with and keep saying I’m going to replace it, but haven’t gotten around to it, you all work hard and it’s freaking hot out here the way I look at it I got a new nice box installed for $20, well worth my money. They just laughed and said how much they appreciated it. So I figured at this point if I put a dead body at the curb, they will gladly smile and take it away. Ha ha Now if they hit my car that would be another story. Our recycling is outsourced, they show up when they feel like it.
@polskagirl01 that’s why I wear black too LOL

@skippygirlsmom Three in one day!! Drivers in your neighborhood are out of control.0
-
@martaindale and I'm really slow so it's not like I'm the Flash and they don't have time to see me LOL2
-
Wow @skippygirlsmom that's some crazy driving in your neighborhood!! People are just in there own little world and don't pay attention to what is going on outside their own bubble. Just keep looking out for yourself!martaindale wrote: »
Yesterday was a few degrees cooler, which is such a big help. Like 72F instead of 77F, but I'll take it. It was even cooler this morning but, of course, I wasn't running today. Boooo! Why does it always seem like the best weather falls on non-running days?!
@martaindale I know right?!!! That's what I said the other day. These 'cool' mornings don't come often, so I am mad when they fall on my rest days.
I too am just about to start training for my fall race. It is a 15K in mid October. I typically don't follow a training plan for this race, as it is usually in the middle of my marathon training. But not doing a marathon (not planning on it anyway), I thought it would be nice to try to PR this race and so I should probably find a 15K plan. I have been running every other day since Christmas, which is an increase from the 3 days a week I've been doing all the years prior. As injury prone as I am, I was scared to start that schedule, but surprisingly I have never felt better. But all the 15K training plans I see have at least 4 or 5 days of running, which of course has two or three days in a row of running. This would be the first year I have not been injured before the race, so I am hesitant to jump into a plan that has me running that many days in a row. Going from 3 days to every other day proved to be beneficial, but I'm scared to try a 5 day running week schedule. I think I will modify one and do speedwork in the middle of the week, and keep to the every other day schedule. I may add a recovery run day the day after a speed workout. That would have me running 4 and 5 days a week.
Just thinking out loud here. I'll just play it by ear and see how it goes I guess.

So I figured last night I would go home and pass out! Buuuuut nope. It was a crazy day at work that resulted in having to close one of our centers and consolidating staff to the other 2 on top of getting through our yearly internal audit. I get home after shift, and just sat there all owl eyed! It wasn't until after midnight before I fell asleep. That means when my alarm went off this morning, I hit snooze a few times. Another shift today, then I get one day off before 4 in a row.
@quilteryoyo I hate when my legs are stiff like that before a run. That happened to me las week during my 6 miles. It took about 3 miles before I started feeling loose. I used to hate the treadmill, but now I embrace it. It's not my preferred method of running, but when I need a day to rest my legs while still getting them moving I enjoy it.
@skippygirlsmom I'm glad you didn't yell at them. I'm sure you being kind about it spurred them to get someone there really quickly. Sorry to hear about the crazy drivers! It's scary thinking about being at the mercy of someone seeing you on the road.
@polskagirl01 I hare you on the sweat! I get super self conscience and typically stick to wearing black as well. And some athletic wear is so thin! I would really love to find a nice pair of running pants (I can't do shorts) that have some kind of core support in them as well.
@martaindale I really enjoy Jeff Galloway. I started off using his method, but had to modify a bit since I was going challenge races. His run/walk/run is what got me through those long runs. My body still hurt, but I did not have as much knee and hip pain as I had experienced prior to learning about his method.6 -

Rest day today. Golf instead of running.
@skippygirlsmom I've sometimes considered running with a pouch of tar paper nails so I can throw handfuls under the wheels of cars going 40 mph in a 20 mph zone. So far I've resisted the urge.

@rheddmobile I hope your garbage guys get better. I totally get being upset if they are being careless and potentially dangerous. Your comment reminded me of what I tell the kids at lunch - If you spill your milk and it's an accident, it's okay. Accidents happen. But, if you are being silly and not paying attention and spill it, well, that's a whole different story.
Good luck on your 10K @ContraryMaryMary ! You're going to smash that PB!
@polskagirl01 Always nice to learn lessons your run and to find the silver lining.
Nice running @martaindale ! It does seem that the best weather occurs when we aren't running. I have not used a Jeff Galloway plan, but like his run/walk method. That is what I did when I started being serious about running again and still do for my longer runs. It keeps my legs, normally, from being jelly after a run and my paces are often better than when I try to run the entire distance.
@skippygirlsmom Glad you were paying attention and didn't get hit! If I see a car coming on my rural road, I try to get on the other side (wrong one to run on, but there isn't a lot of traffic). If I can't, than I stop my watch and straddle the ditch. You were so nice to those guys. I know they appreciated it. You are right, they will probably bend over backwards to help you out now....not that that is why you did it.
@Zoomie402 I'm curious about your run/walk/run for long races. Did you have a set number of minutes that you ran before you walked and did you keep that up the entire race? If you aren't still using this method, why did you change?

7-22 3.15 miles running, 1.0 mile walking (Short Interval Run)
MT = 51.75/70 miles running: 22.0/31miles walking
Today was a short interval run...5 min zone 1, 5 min zone 2, 6x(1.5 min zone 5/2.5 min zone 1), 5 min zone 1. I didn't get out the door until 9:45 this morning. The temp wasn't too bad, 72°F. Humidity was 83%, so that part was not the best, but it wasn't horrible. I ran on my local road today. My fast 1.5 minute paces were pretty good for me at 8:45, 8:38, 9:36, 10:14, 8:48, and 9:13. The worst part of the entire run was that I wasn't paying close enough attention and thought the watch showed 6/6 when it was actually 5/6. So, I ran that one all out as I thought I would be done. When it beeped for the recovery, I looked and saw it was only rep 5. I was so disappointed. I turned around and did the recovery back up the hill I had just ran down, so that I could repeat that for the last segment. It's the easiest part of the route. Still, thinking I was done when I wasn't made that 6th one just that much harder. LOL The 0.15 miles I ran to commemorate the fact that today is the 15th anniversary of my husband's death. I think he would be happy that I am taking care of myself and trying to stay in shape.4 -
@quilteryoyo here is the link for the run/walk/run method http://www.jeffgalloway.com/training/magic-mile/
I am not currently using that since I am not training at the moment for a race. Right now, I just do what I feel like doing and listen to my body. However, I will be registering for the HM in my city for April as well as for a HM at Disney next November. I will be bringing back this training.1 -
martaindale wrote: »sweetdaisy13 wrote: »@polskagirl01 I have a lovely grey running skort, but... same problem as your shorts. Sweat shows up really easily and it looked like I wet myself! So I've gone back to wearing my black one 😆
Yep, I swear some athletic clothing designers either don't sweat or don't exercise! I have had more that a few pairs of leggings I had to take out of the rotation for that reason.
Yup, all my shorts are black or white for this very reason.2 -
@Zoomie402 Thanks. For my pace, it says 60/30. That's running 60 sec/walking 30 sec, right? That seems like too much stopping and starting to me. Humm. I'll have to think about that. Right now, I'm not scheduling walk breaks, just doing them when I start to get tired, which I know is not what Galloway says to do, or if it's a steep hill.0

I realized that I was off a day in my log above. I missed that I did 0 on Monday. Anyway, just a short run today on the treadmill before strength training. I am planning to do my long run tomorrow, but it may not be super long. It's supposed to be a beautiful day though so I'm glad to be able to take advantage.4 -
@Zoomie402 I may have to give it a go on my long run Saturday. I'm supposed to run 11 miles. Seems like a good time to try it out. Did you use some sort of timer to tell you when to run and when to walk, or did you just keep an eye on your watch?0
-
@quilteryoyo I used a Gymboss Minimax interval timer. It let's you program and save multiple interval's. I clipped it to the inside pocket of whatever pants I was running in. It has a pretty decent alarm on it, so when I was training for really long runs, I would zip it into the pouch of my waste band water bottle holder.2

It was another nice morning for running. I have really been enjoying the lower dew point this week. Today I ran my interval workout. I got new Garmin in April and this was the first time I programmed a workout on my watch. My old Garmin didn't have that feature. I loved having the workout on my watch. I never have been very confident with speed work, but this time I felt like I was doing it right. I did pretty good on hitting the pace for the speed part but I ran too fast on all the slow parts. Hal has given me an A- so far after 3 runs.
Good luck with your 10K @contrarymarymary!

99 degree heat index and thunder late this morning, walked more than we ran. There must have been a billion butterflies on the trail. No one else crazy enough to be out there at noon in hundred degree heat, so we had the trail all to ourselves. So I did something I have never done before, ran shirtless in just a sports bra! Crazy! It felt so much nicer. I guess I can cross that off my “you know you’re a runner when” list along with going to the bathroom outside and losing a toenail. We got about 10k total but only the first half was mostly running.8
-
@polskagirl01 - I have some running shorts and leggings that have patterns that don't show the sweat. Most though are from a company that sold out to NorthFace and their designs essentially went away. When I don't run with Hobbes the Vizsla I like to wear non-compression type (loose flowy) shorts like these.
I think a lot of the women's sportswear designers are designing for people who just want to look like they run or workout but don't really do it, because the clothes are just too impractical.
@quilteryoyo - I am up to doing 60/30 intervals now too. I want to use it for my HM in September but was trying to decide if I should make the run part a bit longer like 90s?
Also I found an interval timer app for my phone that I really like, called Intervals Pro. You can set up different 'workouts' and adjust the work and recovery intervals however you like them - they don't have to be all the same even. I went ahead and paid the one time fee - I think it was $3.99, so I could use all the functions. It buzzes on my phone and also gives me a verbal cue to go to the next interval in 5s and then buzzes again. The only thing I wish it would do is say which you should be on, so if I have to stop for Hobbes, I could let it run and know if it was on the run part or the recovery part.
I haven't run in a couple of days. Kinda wish I had taken my running clothes with me on our little trip up the coast. It was in the low 50s this morning and would have been lovely for a run. It did warm up really quickly though. I will get out for something tomorrow and again on Saturday. Need to start inching my distances up but with the heat and humidity I am finding that difficult to do.8 -
5.25 miles this morning. Just a short easy run since I have to run tomorrow. Bright full moon guided my way. Not much else interesting about today's run.

This is my first running post for July. Bare with me I’m very analytical so I’m going to break down my first recorded run to the challenge.
7/23
1st mile run 11’54” pace
2nd mile run 10’44” pace
3rd mile run 11’36 pace
4th mile walk 18’38” pace
5th mile walk 19’23” pace
Total avg pace 14’29” pace
Heart rate
Avg 155 bpm
Top hr 180 bpm
My heart worked extra hard because the temperature was 90 degrees F. Also we have a nice park in Yuma, AZ that has a nice 1 mile track with lots of hill inclines. My Fitbit registered that I climbed 75 floors. I feel for my first official run for this challenge was a winner being I’m a novice. Plus I feel great.10 -

That was kind of my feeling too. I have switched training apps in the past because the walk breaks got to the point that they were more annoying than helpful. As my fitness improved, I actually found it mentally more difficult to walk and have to re-start running that to just slow down for a couple of minutes.
That said, for this particular race, I am going to use scheduled walk breaks at the aid stations. That will be about 30-45 secs every 1.5 miles or so. It's way more than I usually do and I think it may help me feel more relaxed during the race. During a "real" race, I usually also bring my own water just so I don't have to rely on the aid stations but I think this time I won't carry anything so I have to stop and get a drink.

@rheddmobile Isn't it crazy how much of a difference a shirt makes?! I joined team sports bra last summer and after a few runs could not have cared any less what anyone thought of me, and honestly no one probably cared. I was always so self conscious but now it just feels normal.6

I started doing that last August, just decided I did not care what anyone thought since in reality I am covered.
Yep, me too!! For the last few summers starting sometime in May I leave the shirt at home so I don't have to carry an extra 3lbs of sweat drenched fabric on me. It make a BIG difference.5 -
@quilteryoyo there are also free interval timer apps if you run with a smart phone. Or some watches (I don't know which ones) apparently have a feature where you pre-program your workout and then it tells you what to do.
@shanaber yes, absolutely the "fitness look for clothing vs actually working for running" is definitely a thing. I should've known better, and didn't even NEED more shorts. I love my Decathlon black shorts, and have a pair of double layer shorts that are great too... and some baggy short ones that always chafe, and I think if I wear these new ones under the chafey ones, it may work out ok. I also ordered swimsuits online, because I finally admitted that my sporty 2-piece is a size too small and always has been (turns out it fits my 9 year old daughter 😱) and that's a whole 'nother story...
Today was 10k to get my 40 for the week, since I'm gonna be really busy for the next week and am not sure how much running I'll get over the weekend. I'll try to check in, but don't worry if I don't

I would consider going shirtless if I were confident that observers would not injure themselves laughing.
Besides, how are your *kittens* going to chafe properly without a shirt to rub them???9 -
I would love to run in the Sports Bra Squad but I burn so badly I can't. I would need to run before the sun comes up and then I wouldn't need to run without my shirt. I actually wear long sleeves all year round now to protect my skin after being sufficiently chastised by the dermatologist. I have found thin shirts that are sweat wicking and let the air through so that helps.
@alphahowls - it is crazy how the smoke and ash from our fires are traveling all the way across the country and creating air quality alerts! So far for my area it has been ok and we aren't getting much of it yet (I am sure we will get it sooner or later). Right now the weather pattern is pulling monsoonal moisture from AZ and TX over to us and driving up the humidity. We had thunder storm and flash flood warnings up yesterday as a result. As long as we don't get a lot of lightening the humidity is only bad for running. It is good for the fire danger.
I think I am getting acclimated to the humidity a bit. It was in the low 80s with 70% humidity when I went out and didn't feel too bad. There was a really nice breeze so that helped too.
@martaindale - we have one neighbor who always seems to have their sprinklers on when I am coming home. Today I literally danced through them twice 😂
@polskagirl01 - I always thought the loose, flowy shorts would a) bug me and b) chafe and I have not had any issues with the ones I have.
Have fun at your camp! I really think you should tire those kids out with a really good trail run! 😊5
