I got up a little bit early this morning in order to get my run in. My tummy started giving me some minor issues, so I didn't make it out the door until 8:40. I decided I'd run driveway laps, just in case. I had no further issues, thankfully. The run was really hard though. My legs were tired and just didn't want to move to begin with. They finally loosened up about half way through. My pace was just a little bit faster than my Recovery Run yesterday - but it was on the treadmill, so I didn't have to deal with the hills and humidity. I'm calling just getting it done a victory today.6 -

I'm going to start training for my November HM soon. I have been thinking about training plans. I usually use a Hal Higdon plan and modify it to fit my needs. But I decided to try the Run with Hal app. I still have a couple of weeks before the actual training starts so just base building for now Yesterday was a 5 mile base run at 10:50 pace. I ran 5.3 at 10:43 pace so I thought that was really good. Today the plan was a 45 minute tempo run which should have been 4.2 miles at 10:35 pace. I actually ran 5.3 at 10:33 in 56 minutes. So I did hit the pace. Hal hasn't said anything yet since I only have 2 workouts logged. Tomorrow has 200 m at 800 pace so we'll see how that goes.
Today's run was really nice. The weather was a little cooler at 68°F and the dew point was only 66°. It is amazing how just a few degrees lower can make a difference.
2021 Races:
4/24/21: Run For The Children 10K PR 55:46:28.
11/6/21: Run For 57th AHC Half Marathon

Nice running @kgirlhart ! I hope you enjoy the Run with Hal app. I look forward to hear his comments. I kind of miss hearing about the relationship that @bearly63 had with him. (At least I think that it was her.)0

@quilteryoyo that’s too funny. I always say I never met a bathroom I didn’t want to visit. I swear it runs in my family, everyone seems to have to go all the time.
Yesterday was big garbage day in my neighborhood so they have this big claw thing that picks up the stuff in front of your house. I had a few bags of things out and they were picking it up, the claw swung and hit my mailbox breaking it off near the bottom (where the wood post in the ground stopped). The poor guys I walked out and I guess they expected me to lose my crap but I was just laughed and they said someone would be here today to fix it, sure enough they were here this morning already, but one problem, the person who installed it actually put the black post of the mailbox in the concrete along with the wooden post, they can’t get the black out of the ground to install a new one ha ha. The poor guy, I live in Alabama and he’s a sweet old country boy with overalls cut off into shorts and his southern drawl was so thick I could hardly understand him. He said they guys yesterday were so happy I didn’t yell, I said it’s a mailbox, he said people lose their minds screaming and hollering and threaten them, I said over a mailbox!!! Awful.
@martaindale we have a few trails that are less traveled that we run and sometimes I run them and the whole time I’m going “please no snakes, please no snakes”.
@ContraryMaryMary that’s the nice thing about our 2 local Fleet Feet is that both try to employ runners only, trail, road, short, ultra, tri, makes a big difference, plus they have training time like once a week or every other week where they learn about new shoes coming in or they have shoe reps come in and talk to them, it’s great.
I can kind of understand the yelling over the mailbox! Coincidentally we saw an incident with the same sort of claw in our neighborhood just this morning. They were whipping it around and nearly smashed the neighbor’s car! I would be pretty annoyed if they were being as careless as our trash guys were, it might be just a mailbox but it could easily be worse! Our trash at the moment is being picked up by a new company with rented equipment (I didn’t even know you could rent a garbage truck but it says on the side it’s a rental) because the city FIRED the old company for not picking up trash! So I guess it makes sense that they don’t know what they are doing,2 -
Nice running @kgirlhart. I will start build up for my next major half marathon soon too - mines on October 31st. Before then I have a couple of 10k races, the first of which is this Sunday. Consequently speed work today, but nothing too strenuous 🤪 only 6 x 400m repeats. Rest day tomorrow (the third this week!) and a short freshen-up on Saturday. I haven’t done a 10k since 2019 and my PB from then still holds. Aiming to smash that. Nervous! No pressure!!!8
-
And the lesson from today's run is that my new shorts get a big thumbs down. The color/fabric showed every bit of sweat and made me look like I peed myself. Now I remember why I like black. BUT I did find a nice back road that connects nicely with some of my other routes, and made it home before the storm I could see off in the distance9
-
@polskagirl01 I have a lovely grey running skort, but... same problem as your shorts. Sweat shows up really easily and it looked like I wet myself! So I've gone back to wearing my black one 😆5

Yep, I swear some athletic clothing designers either don't sweat or don't exercise! I have had more that a few pairs of leggings I had to take out of the rotation for that reason.2 -

Yesterday was a few degrees cooler, which is such a big help. Like 72F instead of 77F, but I'll take it. It was even cooler this morning but, of course, I wasn't running today. Boooo! Why does it always seem like the best weather falls on non-running days?!3 -
I noticed a couple of people mentioned starting training for fall races. I have sort of started training for mine as well. With the heat, I was hesitant to jump into the plan I usually use because speed work in this weather just seems like a recipe for heat stroke. It's already so bad and traditionally August is quite a bit worse. And, this is a fun race. My A race is in January so I'll pick it up after the Nov race. No need to push the training 2 months early.
So anyway, I am modifying a Jeff Galloway plan. runDisney has a partnership with him and they send out training plans. I don't know if any of you have used these but they are mega-gentle. Gentle to the point that I'm actually making it harder, which I never do! First, they are 3 day a week plans so I'm adding in a 4th day because that's my routine, but I am enjoying the flexibility because life is hectic right now so if I miss a run here and there, technically I haven't deviated from the plan. How's that for some mental gymnastics? Silly but I like to feel like I'm sticking to the plan. Second, they are designed as run-walk plans so I am just running them. Third, they are 19 weeks plans. I have never seen a 19-week half marathon plan. But, that means the first several weeks are very low mileage, which is really helpful right now as I am rebuilding my fitness and contending with the worst of the summer weather. This, by the way, is the experienced runner plan.
Having really looked at these plans for the first time, I feel like I have some insight into why I see so many runners at these races that seem to be really new to racing and running in general. You can absolutely finish a HM with this plan and train basically from the couch in about 4 months.5 -

I really wish the people in my hood would start to pay attention, THREE cars almost hit me today. Two of them neighbors, jerk off down the street from me drives 100 mph down our road all the time and turns the corner on two wheels I’ve already banged on the side of his car and yelled. Then a truck I’m watching him come at me and I’m like okay he’s just not going to give me much room (hello I’m a foot from the edge of the road), it wasn’t until he swerved in a panic did I realize he never saw me. Then coming down my street the new neighbor up the street backing out of his driveway 100 mph (see a theme on my street) and I was behind him. Okay if you are backing out normal speed I have time to cross the street, run faster or stop, but dang slow down people.
@quilteryoyo I walked out the door across my grass and you could see the look on their faces. I saw it happen, I have some weird fascination with this claw thing LOL Maybe I’m just getting older LOL Glad the tummy trouble didn’t persist
@Zoomie402 great job getting up and getting it done before shift. I’m a morning runner usually takes me a couples weeks to get in groove it I stop.
@rheddmobile I can say I have watched the guys a million times (since I’m working at home most the time) they are really truly careful. They have the guy driving and then two guys on the ground on each side of the truck he’s dumping in watching. He misjudged mine by like a foot. They installed the new box, actually much nicer than what I had, added the numbers and everything. I gave them $20 to have lunch they were like no no no we broke it. I said listen I didn’t like that box to begin with and keep saying I’m going to replace it, but haven’t gotten around to it, you all work hard and it’s freaking hot out here the way I look at it I got a new nice box installed for $20, well worth my money. They just laughed and said how much they appreciated it. So I figured at this point if I put a dead body at the curb, they will gladly smile and take it away. Ha ha Now if they hit my car that would be another story. Our recycling is outsourced, they show up when they feel like it.
@polskagirl01 that’s why I wear black too LOL

@skippygirlsmom Three in one day!! Drivers in your neighborhood are out of control.0
-
@martaindale and I'm really slow so it's not like I'm the Flash and they don't have time to see me LOL2
-
Wow @skippygirlsmom that's some crazy driving in your neighborhood!! People are just in there own little world and don't pay attention to what is going on outside their own bubble. Just keep looking out for yourself!martaindale wrote: »

@martaindale I know right?!!! That's what I said the other day. These 'cool' mornings don't come often, so I am mad when they fall on my rest days.
I too am just about to start training for my fall race. It is a 15K in mid October. I typically don't follow a training plan for this race, as it is usually in the middle of my marathon training. But not doing a marathon (not planning on it anyway), I thought it would be nice to try to PR this race and so I should probably find a 15K plan. I have been running every other day since Christmas, which is an increase from the 3 days a week I've been doing all the years prior. As injury prone as I am, I was scared to start that schedule, but surprisingly I have never felt better. But all the 15K training plans I see have at least 4 or 5 days of running, which of course has two or three days in a row of running. This would be the first year I have not been injured before the race, so I am hesitant to jump into a plan that has me running that many days in a row. Going from 3 days to every other day proved to be beneficial, but I'm scared to try a 5 day running week schedule. I think I will modify one and do speedwork in the middle of the week, and keep to the every other day schedule. I may add a recovery run day the day after a speed workout. That would have me running 4 and 5 days a week.
Just thinking out loud here. I'll just play it by ear and see how it goes I guess.

7/8: 2 miles + Mixed Fit
7/9: N/A 12hr shift
7/10: N/A 12hr shift

07/20: 2 miles
07/21: 3.16 miles this morning. I'll be adding another mile when I walk my dog later
07/22: N/A 12 hr shift
So I figured last night I would go home and pass out! Buuuuut nope. It was a crazy day at work that resulted in having to close one of our centers and consolidating staff to the other 2 on top of getting through our yearly internal audit. I get home after shift, and just sat there all owl eyed! It wasn't until after midnight before I fell asleep. That means when my alarm went off this morning, I hit snooze a few times. Another shift today, then I get one day off before 4 in a row.
@quilteryoyo I hate when my legs are stiff like that before a run. That happened to me las week during my 6 miles. It took about 3 miles before I started feeling loose. I used to hate the treadmill, but now I embrace it. It's not my preferred method of running, but when I need a day to rest my legs while still getting them moving I enjoy it.
@skippygirlsmom I'm glad you didn't yell at them. I'm sure you being kind about it spurred them to get someone there really quickly. Sorry to hear about the crazy drivers! It's scary thinking about being at the mercy of someone seeing you on the road.
@polskagirl01 I hare you on the sweat! I get super self conscience and typically stick to wearing black as well. And some athletic wear is so thin! I would really love to find a nice pair of running pants (I can't do shorts) that have some kind of core support in them as well.
@martaindale I really enjoy Jeff Galloway. I started off using his method, but had to modify a bit since I was going challenge races. His run/walk/run is what got me through those long runs. My body still hurt, but I did not have as much knee and hip pain as I had experienced prior to learning about his method.6 -

Rest day today. Golf instead of running.
@skippygirlsmom I've sometimes considered running with a pouch of tar paper nails so I can throw handfuls under the wheels of cars going 40 mph in a 20 mph zone. So far I've resisted the urge.
When you pop in here claiming your December 2021 mileage, what accomplishments will you have made?
PUT THE FUN BACK IN THE RUN!
Return to a good running weight of 175 lbs (second attempt)

9/18 5k Run and Roll, Aurora, OH6 -
@rheddmobile I hope your garbage guys get better. I totally get being upset if they are being careless and potentially dangerous. Your comment reminded me of what I tell the kids at lunch - If you spill your milk and it's an accident, it's okay. Accidents happen. But, if you are being silly and not paying attention and spill it, well, that's a whole different story.
Good luck on your 10K @ContraryMaryMary ! You're going to smash that PB!
@polskagirl01 Always nice to learn lessons your run and to find the silver lining.
Nice running @martaindale ! It does seem that the best weather occurs when we aren't running. I have not used a Jeff Galloway plan, but like his run/walk method. That is what I did when I started being serious about running again and still do for my longer runs. It keeps my legs, normally, from being jelly after a run and my paces are often better than when I try to run the entire distance.
@skippygirlsmom Glad you were paying attention and didn't get hit! If I see a car coming on my rural road, I try to get on the other side (wrong one to run on, but there isn't a lot of traffic). If I can't, than I stop my watch and straddle the ditch. You were so nice to those guys. I know they appreciated it. You are right, they will probably bend over backwards to help you out now....not that that is why you did it.
@Zoomie402 I'm curious about your run/walk/run for long races. Did you have a set number of minutes that you ran before you walked and did you keep that up the entire race? If you aren't still using this method, why did you change?

Today was a short interval run...5 min zone 1, 5 min zone 2, 6x(1.5 min zone 5/2.5 min zone 1), 5 min zone 1. I didn't get out the door until 9:45 this morning. The temp wasn't too bad, 72°F. Humidity was 83%, so that part was not the best, but it wasn't horrible. I ran on my local road today. My fast 1.5 minute paces were pretty good for me at 8:45, 8:38, 9:36, 10:14, 8:48, and 9:13. The worst part of the entire run was that I wasn't paying close enough attention and thought the watch showed 6/6 when it was actually 5/6. So, I ran that one all out as I thought I would be done. When it beeped for the recovery, I looked and saw it was only rep 5. I was so disappointed. I turned around and did the recovery back up the hill I had just ran down, so that I could repeat that for the last segment. It's the easiest part of the route. Still, thinking I was done when I wasn't made that 6th one just that much harder. LOL The 0.15 miles I ran to commemorate the fact that today is the 15th anniversary of my husband's death. I think he would be happy that I am taking care of myself and trying to stay in shape.4 -
@quilteryoyo here is the link for the run/walk/run method http://www.jeffgalloway.com/training/magic-mile/
I am not currently using that since I am not training at the moment for a race. Right now, I just do what I feel like doing and listen to my body. However, I will be registering for the HM in my city for April as well as for a HM at Disney next November. I will be bringing back this training.1 -
