Less Alcohol ~ JULY 2021 ~ One Day At A Time

Hey all, I'm back. It's been a few months, a few months of - well you know, I felt all my good intentions slip through my fingers, and I ended up drinking daily again. I don't even know why.
Main thing is, I am back and trying.
I am so glad this thread is here and I appreciate all of you.10 -
My usual goal, 16-20 AF for the month. This is sustainable long term for me.
Still planning on hitting my 16 - even though I have mostly been 21-23AF each month this year so far.
Sunday July 25 - AF - Next planned drinks day is Wednesday.
Monday July 26 - AF - Finally finishing watching the Olympics' opening ceremony. Great! AF beer. I like it so much that I even bought real beer for drinks days, and had one last week. Who knew? I never liked beer before.
Tuesday July 27 - AF - Felt like having a couple, but I have plans to have a few tomorrow night, so skipped tonight.
Wednesday July 28 - Drinks. Car is dead up at the other end of town. No plans for drinks again until Sunday eve.
Thursday July 29 - AF - Hit my 16, going to hit 18 this month. Car is still dead in a retail parking lot. I bought a new car today, it ate up my entire day off, but I am mobile again. Going to evening shifts for the next week or more, so trying to stay up a little later tonight, watching the Olympics : - ) AF beer each night that I am on a planned AF night.
Rolling total - 16 AF days out of 29 days6 -
Sunflowers are all flowering now : - )
The sky was less smoky up above at 6am, but smoky at the sides all around.
I walked up to the mall where my dead car is to try it again (45 minute walk), then a friend picked me up and drove me home.
The sunflowers started my day off happy.
I have a bunch of black hollyhocks planted down the side where the sunflowers are, they take a few years to actually flower, but one of them is beginning to do it this year. Yellow and black are going to be beautiful together in years to come, and the Hollyhocks will get taller also. I will post again when all of the buds on it open, but quite excited to see these few.

Last weekend was nice. DH has been mostly AF since our vacation, meaning he has one beer or one margarita on Saturday and AF the rest of the week. That makes it tons easier for me to moderate. Last weekend I opened a bottle of wine and, with the aid of a vacuvin to slow it's oxidation, drank it over a couple days -- 2 glasses Fri, 1 on Sat, 2 on Sun. I had it all to myself. It felt indulgent compared to his abstinence. Funny how I can recall feeling deprived drinking those exact same amounts with the only difference being I was surrounded by people drinking more. It's crazy to let extrinsic factors have such a big influence on my perception. I going to try to remind myself of that next time I find myself trying to "keep up" with others.
I think that most of us can relate to this!
My only friend in my bubble (when we were doing that) is a daily drinker, kind of like I used to be, 1 or 2 every day after work. This can be triggering for me even just knowing it. I get together with her for very early morning walks on her days off so that I get a visit in with her without drinks.
Another trigger is watching so many of the shows that I love on my PVR, like: Caribbean Life, Bahamas Life, Mexico Life etc. - all showing people drinking delicious looking cocktails!!
Just because I want it doesn't mean that I am going to have it.
The same goes for curbing frequency and amounts of some calories/foods while trying to lose weight.5 -
"WAVING" to our returning posters. July has been such a great month with lots of supportive and informative conversations. It truely does help to hear other people's stories of both struggle and success.
If you ever thought you were the only individual that ever had trouble whittling down your alcohol consumption, don't worry, your not alone. There is an entire "loving family" of us right here.
❣❣❣I so appreciate each and everyone that contributes to our group.
Me:
2 drinks Wednesday with gal pals
AF last night
Stay tuned for the link to the AUGUST-2021 thread to be put up here later tonight.

2 (AF) days left to the month here. Looking to start fresh again in Aug. and definitely work on my stress level.
@GiveHerGrace, I'll have to check out South Dakota one of these day & do hope the smoke situation improves soon.
Enjoy Friday!!6 -

I live in South Dakota when I am not in AZ. The western side of the state is beautiful. If you have never been to the state I would recommend going to the Black Hills, The Badlands, Custer State Park, Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse. I live in Sioux Falls which is the eastern part of the state. We are all prairie land east of the Missouri River. Sioux Falls is by far the largest population base in the state. We have a very nice downtown (and of course the water falls that the city is named for.) The people in South Dakota are extremely friendly.
We are planning an RV trip, what is the best time of year to visit South Dakota?4 -

@globalhiker & @Fit_Happens_2021
I loved Custer State Park in South Dakota! Don’t miss driving Needles Hwy and the pigtail bridges.
We went in July … warm days snd cool nights!
Watch for the Sturgis Rally though … tons of motorcycles for that event on the road and filling towns like Deadwood. Very crowded for that event.5 -
@Fit_Happens_2021 You definitely do not want to go to the western part of the state the last week of July or the first three weeks of August (unless you are a big fan of Harleys). The west side of the state is more moderate temperature wise and not nearly as humid as the east side so you could certainly visit well into the fall. I would say April - October would be the best months to visit the state. I haven't been out west in years (other than driving through to Seattle.) It's probably about time I visit again.

AF today.
1 more day to meet my goal of more AF days than drink days for the month.
July totals
AF - 15
Drinks - 15
Perhaps in August I will shoot for at least 2 AF days for every 1 drinks days.7 -

Holly Molly That view is beautiful @Lilylady3k
Well am struggling these past few days with alcohol. My head is now going to focus on August/Monday. I may stay AF on Saturday, but Sunday was already planned. We are taking my adult (now) long time foster child to dinner and celebrate her 29th birthday. She graced our family from the time she was in grade school (my youngest daughters best friend) to when she 'aged out' at 18 but continued in our home for another year while she attended college. Then once on her own she moved to Portland but just recently relocated back to WA. So this is the first time we will be together since the pandemic. I am truly excited.
So looking forward to a new Month, new 'Do Over' and try to strive for just one day more AF than last month.8 -

Oh that view! That’s my dream real estate right there- lakefront property!!!

One drink every day this week. It’s tied to PMS cravings, yet again. I’ll have wine with dinner then start fresh kn Monday.3

@Womona - I too would love to find property on a lake with mountains or hills with a little cooler summers. This is pretty flat area and very hot down in south Texas. It is the Arroyo off the lower Laguna Madre which is near South Padre Island. But I do love the wildlife ... salt water so great sport fishing (redfish, flounder, snook, speckled trout), we see dolphins and turtles ... oh and there are so many beautiful birds!

One more AF day...and the last day of July!
Nice relaxing view there @Lilylady3k. Look like a nice place to kayak. And perfect cocktail hour spot too...

31 days AF. Hit my goal, with 2 pounds lost to boot! (Though the amount of peanut butter consumed this morning has somewhat negated that.)
I'm researching intermittent fasting and low carbing (w/ veggies). So interesting how the science of nutrition is sooo all over the place. Medical studies supporting low carb. Medical studies supporting the Starch diet. Studies supporting fasting, though I'm hearing here and other places it doesn't work so well for women. The only thing that truly makes sense is that we're all different and process food differently.
On to August! Thanks, @MissMay for starting it for us!
Welcome returners and so comforting to see familiar faces here.8 -

I too have done a lot of research on different diets, combination of foods blah blah. I think I have truly tried most. At this point in my life IF seems to be working for me, or my variation when I follow is: coffee in the am (2 cups), mid morning to mid afternoon an apple if I am really hungry. Then a late lunch/early dinner between 3-4pm. Then I try really hard not to have snacks in the evening that is when I see my best results. But yesterday I found this cute little waffle cup maker (clearance for $8.00) and then bought some high protein pancake mix in our local bulk section. I made one last night and nibbled on it plain. So for 150ish calories + 15g of protein I was not hungry, it satisfied that sweet tooth and I did not have any of the quilt! Win Win7 -

It sounds like a truly lovely Sunday you have planned, lmlmrn. So much there to enjoy! Happy birthday to your foster child : flowerforyou:
@Lilylady3k Is that the fishing camp? It's a LOT more refined that what "camp" conjures. Lovely placid view!
We're headed to our lake house today, too. With DD#3 who is home for a week. I've got 2 emotions going on. One is disappointment. She had initially planned to host 3 friends at the lake this weekend and I had really been looking forward to it. Maybe more than I should have? Turns out it's a bad weekend for college kids around here. Everyone is moving out of last years apartment into next years. Also she was giving me some flack about everyone getting covid tested before showing up. Our place is ~850sf with ONE tiny bathroom. Her lack of concern for our health was another disappointment, candidly. DD#1 was the first in our family to be vaccinated (Pfizer in Feb), yet she got a breakthrough infection last weekend (and has felt positively awful for 6 days), so the whole breakthrough infection prospect became a lot more real for us. The infection numbers in our area are pretty concerning. So I guess it is just as well that it's just the 3 of us vs. a house party.
The second emotion is reluctance. Is that an emotion? DD#3 last night started in on the refrain about when she can host parties at the lake without us. I have conflicting emotions about that. One the one hand I want them to use it and enjoy it and have happy memories. On the other, I fear they won't respect the place or the rules and it will end up being expense and effort for me to clean up. Plus I don't want anyone to get hurt while I'm not there (or get sued). For reference, DD#1 has hosted at both our houses and both have involved more cleanup work for me. Maybe part of the bad feelings is getting the message that she rather we not be around. I was excited to do the extra work when included, but resent the extra work when excluded. Maybe I need to work through that a little better.
None of this has anything to do with drinking less except I lean towards emotional eating/drinking and when it comes to uncomfortable emotions I'm striving to process more and consume less.6 -

Hey ya'll,
WOW what a day/night I had.
Just rolled home here at 11:23pm and making my accountability. For this last day of the month we had a clam bake, then went off to a pig roast benefit. There was a superb band that rocked the joint for 4 solid hours (@mainelylisa they are from Portland of all places) I danced my azz off, played corn hole and got a ride in a sidecar motorcycle! Oh, all while drinking non alcoholic Heineken00. And yes, white girls can dance not intoxicated.
Dragging these old bones to bed. Probably going to regret all those boogie woogie moves I was doing in the morning.

When I was in Dallas I looked at going to some lakes, but was afraid that there might be alligators. Are there alligators at your lake house?
Thanks about the car. My other one died, so It was an unexpected expense that I am not exactly celebrating. All good, if I have to get a few more jobs to pay for it I will.4 -
I made it through the whole month AF! I was going to try to make it until Labor Day weekend, but I've decided two months is plenty and one of those days was actually my birthday *proud grin*. Now, I just need to practice portion control. And not let the munchies interfere with my scale numbers.
Have a great August!8
