Golf today instead of running. Only two more weeks of golf to go!!! In the spring I can't wait for it to start; in the fall, I can't wait for it to be over.
When you pop in here claiming your December 2021 mileage, what accomplishments will you have made?
PUT THE FUN BACK IN THE RUN!
Return to a good running weight of 175 lbs (second attempt)
2021 Races:
6/26 Direction Up 5k, Solon, OH 31:48 chip; 31:59 Garmin; 53d overall; 2d male 65 and over
7/17 Run of the Ox 5k, Mantua, OH 32:19 Garmin; 44th overall; 3d place male 60 and over4 -
6 miles this morning. Was a beautiful 52F and light wind. But I was very very slow. Was sore and stiff. Hopefully just shaking off the post race, post travel, old-man body blues.

Weekend Recap
Saturday
My wife and I went to Crabtree Lake Park to investigate the trails. We did about a mile together around the edge of the lake. We got to a spot where the trail split off. She wanted to go on the flat section around the lake to a bridge she could see across the way. I wanted to go deep into the woods to see what's up, so we split up with the intention of meeting back at the car in about 40 minutes. The trails through Crabtree were fantastic. They cater to the mountain bikers; there are sections dedicated to jumps and such. The trails are super well marked, so it was difficult to get really turned around in there. I did a solid 45 minutes more before popping out at the trail head to see my wife hanging out by the car wiping down with my towel.
Sunday
Long run day. I've decided I am going to do these long runs on the ATT until my fitness is a bit better. It's just more predictable. Temps were really nice yesterday, around 47F at the outset. Perfect running weather. This run just felt good from the start. Did a sold 11 miles @ 9:33 pace. Last three miles were 9:15, 9:05, 8:45.
36.9 miles for the week (knew I should have gone another tenth on Sunday!)
Today
Easy jaunt through the woods. 42F at my house when I left, so I knew it would be a few degrees cooler in the woods. Went with a medium weight long sleeve and gloves. Kept them on for the first almost 3 miles too. Did 4.3 miles @ 11:36 pace, nice and easy. HR actually decreased over the last 1.5 miles.
93.1 miles for the month out of 125 mile goal

Racing is a funny thing. There is so little you can actually control: your training in the build-up, your focus and your effort on the day of, and that's about it. You can't control the weather conditions, you can't control the layout of the course and you can't control the competition that shows up.
I ran a 5K on Saturday morning, one in which I expected to challenge my personal record time of 20:24 and maybe come close to a sub-20:00 time (my white whale!) But a surprisingly warm and humid morning for mid-October had other ideas, the target pace was not sustainable in the increasing heat and I finished in a respectable, but still personally disappointing 20:47.23.
And yet, as I mentioned, you can't control the competition that shows up on the day of the race. So, despite all of that, I came in 4th overall. It's so hard to frame that to non-runners, that I was disappointed in the run, that I know I can do better next time, while still squaring that with the fact that I came in 4th place, that I'm more proud of the 5:50 mile race I ran in August (in which I placed 156th) than I am with this one.
Running is a sport of setting goals and, very often, not quite reaching them, but getting better along the way. I feel like I can run a sub-20:00 5K before next spring turns to summer. But sometimes, it's going to feel frustrating until I get there, even when it seems like it shouldn't.

It was 36F and the sky was full of stars when I headed out this morning. I wore long pants and two long-sleeve shirts and a buff on my head to keep my ears warm. I probably would have been fine with one shirt. It always takes me a while to remember how to dress when the weather changes abruptly. My hands got a little chilly but were warm by the time I finished the first mile.
@marisap2010 – I have to admit the Wineglass in NY sounds better than Atlanta. I ran the inaugural Hotlanta Half Marathon that I believe was held in June of 2016 and I was not prepared for that humidity! You are probably more accustomed to it but it just zapped me and that was one of the most miserable HMs that I've done!
@katharmonic - You and @skippygirlsmom are doing awesome on getting those HM distances in this year!
Congratulations @polskagirl01 – all your hard training paid off! Love the crown that your daughter made!
@kgirlhart – I wouldn’t worry about Hal’s pace advice either. You are doing great on your training times! The kitten is beautiful – thanks for giving it a home!
Great job on your 5K @johnisrunning! Not meeting your personal goal just gives you a perfect reason to sign up for another 5K and go for it!

So much truth in this post. As a runner, I totally get it. I have had the same experience trying to explain to a non-runner (or even casual runner), disappointment in a finish when I ran faster than they could even conceive of.

I've been wondering what I would do once I finished my 40-week challenge and my big races were over. So today I got my answer: short bike ride in the rain and an easy session on the home gym. Had to find a couple pieces to the weight machine, but fortunately everything was still there just waiting for us to use it, haha.
I've got 3 different gym vouchers now (from race packets), but decided I should just use the equipment that I have.5 -

So, I am still here, just life trying to run me over. My mother's doctor called me last Monday, alerting me that she was in final stage kidney failure. The running keeps me from losing it altogether.
I had my dental implant surgery today, still numb right now, but feeling it a little.16 -
@johnisrunning It’s so cool to have a fast person in the challenge thread again, we have had a handful of really fast people in the past but most have taken a break or moved on. I think you are now our resident speed demon! It adds a different perspective!
Sorry your race was personally disappointing and I hope your sub 20 happens for you soon.

@AlphaHowls I’m so sorry. What happens next, are they going to dialysis?1
-
10k easy on the Greenline. First run in autumn weather (about 60 F), a couple of days ago we had a storm come through and before was Indian summer and after was fall. I wish this weather lasted longer, it’s the best! Last night we had to run the heater, it got down into the low 40s. And the day before it was over 90!
Now is the time of year when Memphis’s attitude towards public spaces really starts to get on my nerves. We barely had time to finish a short walk before we had to get off the greenline before sundown. I noticed when we were out at Chuckalissa that their trails are only open from 9 am to 7 pm - no running in the mornings before work for you! No wonder Memphis is consistently in the list of fattest cities in the US.2 -
@AlphaHowls Prayers for your mom.1

@rheddmobile wrote: »@AlphaHowls I’m so sorry. What happens next, are they going to dialysis?
No to dialysis. We are in final stage and not really anything can be done. My mother has what is called Factor V mutation. She has a blood clot from her liver to her ankle. Most of her care is just about quality and comfort. I have been so blessed that I moved in with her over 21 years ago and she has never had to be in a care home. She had an accident in 2007 and I became caregiver. More information than you asked, but there it is.@Tramboman wrote: »@AlphaHowls Prayers for your mom.

Thank you! That's very kind of you to say. I have never really felt like "the fast one" as I find myself right on the threshold between novice runners and competitive runners in terms of race times, which is a kind of weird place to be. But I'd be happy to talk more about my speed work in the thread!
@AlphaHowls Sorry to hear about your mother. Wishing you and your family all the best in this difficult time.3 -

Okay update on my hip pain. Talked with Dr Zerr my sports medicine doctor and I won’t be running for awhile. Turns out my left hip pain is a very tight piriformis muscle. We decided that I am to walk 1 mile for a month and increase it by a half a mile every month. I’m also doing cross training with leg exercises and stretches to balance my leg strength. There is a specific stretch that I have to do for my piriformis muscle that hurts really, really bad. But if I want to walk and eventually run I have to put up with the pain. I was wondering if I can still be part of this group and just walk my planned mileage for the month. Eventually I will be able to put in running miles but I have to be patient and follow this plan.8
-
@polskagirl01 Your HM and your post are all kinds of awesome!
@johnisrunning Congratulations on 4th place, and good luck getting that PB soon!
@julieannegannon Wishing you patience and persistence with your piriformis, and sorry for the alliteration.3 -
@johnisrunning - Congratulations on your 5k place and you are so right about races and what you can control. No doubt you will get to that PB, it is just a matter of time.
@AlphaHowls - thinking of you and your mom and sending you support and hugs... your mom is very lucky to have had you to help her.
@julieannegannon - of course you can stay in the group while you walk and build back up. Take it slowly and follow the plan and you will be back running before you know it.
I got in a great run on a very cool, cloudy and rainy morning. We didn't get rained on, just a sprinkle really but it was awesome. Then we had agility class tonight with a very fast course. There are times that I just can't keep up/catch up to Hobbes the Vizsla and he definitely loves running and jumping as fast as he can. There were parts of the course that I just couldn't get too in time, need to work on those distance commands. He is now crashed out in his cave bed and not moving at all...

@julieannegannon Sometimes the hardest challenge is NOT to run when you wish you could! being a runner has all kinds of different challenges! Wishing you well with the piriformis.
Re: piriformis stretches - I’m still doing belly dance classes on my rest days, and having a great time, except for one thing - the lady who teaches beginner classes is also a Pilates and yoga instructor, and her idea of a warm up is a hardcore 15 minute Pilates session, complete with different varieties of planks, crunches, etc, and her cool down is complicated yoga. Last session she’s like, okay, stand on one foot, now cross your foot on top of your knee in a chair position (aka a piriformis stretch) - now reach down while doing that and put both palms on the ground. Try not to fall over! (She says, as three ladies in the background of the video fall over.) I’m like, this is your idea of a cool down move for baby beginners? Geez. This is my day off!4 -
@elanorhawkins Glad you are still able to get your runs in with life being so hectic. Seems that's the case for a lot of people here.0
-
@Scott6255 Nice run yesterday, even if it was slow. Hope today's feel better for you.
@CarsonSurfs Nice running over the weekend. I think it is awesome that your wife runs with you. I love hearing about all of the new places you are finding to run.
@johnisrunning Running is so personalized, and that is one thing I like about it. Setting reachable, but hard goals for each of us is what keeps us going and pushing harder. I have no doubt that you will reach that sub 20 min 5K before spring.
Nice run @Teresa502 . It is hard to know what to wear these days. Cooler weather is nice though.

Logging 2 runs this morning. Yesterday I did a hilly 5 miles. The extra miles meant I could run on some new roads. I managed to run all the hills and kept my heart rate in a good range. I still feel a little out of control on the steep downhills but it is improving. I feel like I am finally beginning to figure out how to adjust my form for hills.
Also, the weather has just been beautiful and the sunrise is getting later. I actually like starting my run in the dark and getting to see the sun come up. This is definitely my favorite time of year for running!5
