October 2021 Monthly Running Challenge

Did a 90 minute aerobic run yesterday and felt good - no pain or discomfort, which was a relief after the day before's horrible mess of a run. However, my hip was really sore last night, even after rolling and yoga. I can feel it is out of alignment but osteos and physios aren't open in Auckland yet (yay, week 8 of lockdown). I'm just going to do what I can to look after it. I have an hour's run and an hour's yoga on the schedule for today - if I do the yoga first, it'll probably help (I will have to do more after but that happens while we watch TV so not an inconvenience). Rest day on Friday (with more yoga), so am hoping it comes right for the weekend.7

@rheddmobile oh no, I hope you feel better quickly.
@quilteryoyo I'm glad to hear you're feeling better enough to not take the medicine, but hope you get back to 100% very soon!
I tried to take it easy, walked my bike up the big hill for school drop-off/pickup, wore compression sleeve on and off, didn't run... but I did have to spend 45 minutes helping move 2 tons of coal (in 25kg bags) into the furnace room. I used a dolly for a good bit of the work, but it was still a lot of lifting. If it was my house, I'd seriously be looking into widening the door so we could get a loaded pallet through. My calf is in that sore kind of state where it's basically threatening to cramp up on you at any moment if you make the wrong move. But I really think it will be fine by the weekend. I can stop whining about it!
Let's all be careful!9 -
@ContraryMaryMary I have found that changing the height of my heels UP helps with hip pain. So when my shins hurt I wear flats and when my hips hurt I wear heels. Hope yours feels better soon.
@rheddmobile interesting about the lupus flare. For some reason it seems like the Covid vaccines (and covid itself) target any weak points we have in our body... hope it eases off quickly.

October Goal: 111 Miles
10/3: 10.30 miles
10/5: 5.51 miles
10/6: 5.11 miles
10/7: 7.10 miles
10/10: 10.51 miles
10/12: 5.52 miles
Q0/13: 5.20 miles
49.25/111 miles completed for October
Once again I didn't have time to post my run yesterday. I did run 5.5 miles. It was an OK run. I was slow at about an 11:00 min pace. But it was warm and windy and humid.
Today's run was one of those runs that just suck. When I got up at 4:30 this morning it was 81°F, feels like 84 with a dew point 70° , 86% humidity and 22 mph winds. I was very slow starting out running into the wind,, but it was a little better on the way home. Tomorrow the plan calls for 8 miles, but the forecast calls for rain so we'll have to see. I know a lot of you enjoy running in the rain, but I'm not a big fan of it especially when it is dark and windy.
This week had been really stressful and I still haven't had a chance to get caught up on the thread, but I have been working on it and giving likes and hugs.

@shanaber Glad the renovations are coming along nicely. Sad about the fire though.
That sounds like a really fun run this morning @Teresa502 . Those one year old's can be exhausting. LOL
Nice run @Tramboman ! All of the chickadees must have been at my house. Seems they are everywhere.
@mshawski "So, the moral of the story is I should probably stop being socially awkward and cheap if I want to run and not hurt so much." This made me laugh. Glad you figured out what to do to keep from hurting after every run.
@rheddmobile I hope you feel better soon!
@ContraryMaryMary Glad you were able to run pain free. I hope the yoga makes your hip feel better.
Thanks @polskagirl01 I'm glad your calf isn't too bad today. Hope it's okay for the weekend race.

I played tennis this morning and then went into work. I was supposed to get off at 3, but wound up needing to work until 3:30. I was there mostly during the nap time for the kids, so was an easy day for me. The worst part was trying to stay awake. Anyway, when I got really sleepy, I laid down in the floor and did my back exercises and stretches. Did that a couple of times today. That really seems to be working. I can still feel it, but it is much, much better today. I guess I need to be like @polskagirl01 and quit whining about it. LOL
I had planned to try to run 3 miles today, but, with having 30 minutes less time between work and going to church, I had to settle for walking one mile and running one mile. I did run the entire mile on the driveway, which meant I ran up the dreaded hill closest to my house. I wouldn't want to do that for a long run, but it was good to do it a couple of times for the mile. My mile pace was 12:51, which is really good for driveway runs for me.7 -
Liked and hugged my way through. Hope everyone is feeling better soon. And this is a safe space to whine as long as you need to

I went to HM/marathon group tonight and it was probably my best workout this year. I don't think it's entirely the new pink shoes. The workout was 5-6-4 minute intervals x 2 sets, with 2 minute recovery between for the first set and 90 seconds recovery for the second set. These long intervals are a hard workout and I was dreading this after not sleeping well last night and really dragging today. But the weather was certainly good, a little humid but nice 60 degree temp that cooled down a little as it got dark.
The track at the high school was being used so we headed over to a neighborhood where there is a loop that has very little traffic. The loop has a hill on one end, so this adds to the workout. We ran half the interval and then turned around and ran back, so never completing the loop - and we ran it in the direction that we were doing the uphill on the way out and downhill on the way back. I love the downhill part and I actually felt really good. I even pulled off an 8:53 minute mile - with the critical caveat that I stopped my watch during the recovery so that mile was not all run in one shot. Still. I'll take it as progress because I have been very slow this whole training season and that is an awesome time for me. The difference is likely that I have not been hiking nearly so much in the last few weeks and have had more time to recover.
Speaking of, my last hike #46 of 46 is now tentatively schedule for November 7. Fingers crossed for cooperative weather. It's likely to have snow, but a sunny day would be great

I lifted today and felt much better than yesterday, despite getting not enough sleep, so it seems like it might be fine. My mom’s doctor sent her an automated thing about a colonoscopy and now she is obsessed with getting a colonoscopy day before yesterday. I really wish her various doctors would stop sending her alerts on her phone. What with the military insurance plus Medicaid she is like a fountain of money and they would have her in the office literally every week if I let them - the last visit the doctor didn’t even do anything, took no tests, just sort of read her chart, waved his hand in blessing and that was it. But she gets obsessed with every tiny thing and they disturb her peace.

@katharmonic that's so exciting to have your hike #46 planned! And the whole challenge is impressive.
I'm basically recovering/tapering/chilling over here 😎 but it's all good because I have plenty of stuff to do for work to keep me busy.5 -

Still reading, liking, hugging and otherwise being a lurker here!
So it seems that while walking did not hurt the plantar fasciitis any, once it was mostly healed all that walking was preventing the last bit of healing from occurring. It really reminds me of how I had to deal with tennis elbow. So I've taken the last 6 days off from even walking and now have my first morning in months with no pain or discomfort. I think I'll give it a couple weeks more before trying it out again.
I may need a little more downtime though for an upcoming surgery I just recently learned I will be scheduled for in the next week or two. It's nothing too worrisome (only risk having to go under for surgery) it's to both treat and further diagnose an auto-immune condition I get to enjoy. But from the sound of it I will definitely not be running/walking for perhaps a few weeks after, but am speculating at best right now. There will definitely be downtime to heal though, extent of mobility I'll just have to wait and see.
Keep on being awesome everyone, I am living vicariously through you beasts for now!8 -

I usually don’t run on Thursdays but a couple of friends wanted to due to time conflicts tomorrow. We met at a different place so that we could run a different route. We ended up walking the last mile back to the car but for a good cause. I also failed to start my watch so I’m borrowing the mileage from one of my friend’s Garmin.
This little fellow needed rescuing. As we ran past, we heard it meowing from a drain culvert on the opposite side of the 4-lane road. We stopped and it started to come across the road to us. It was almost across and out of the road when traffic started coming. It got scared and ran back to the other side narrowly missing getting hit by a monster truck. This road is close to my work and shift change is at 6:00 am so there is a lot of traffic and industrial trucks on this road. We decided to keep moving forward on our side so that it was not tempted to come out into the road again. When we came back, it started meowing again, so I just crossed the road and scooped it up. I carried it to a shopping center parking lot on the other side of the road. I thought it would be safer over there. When I put it down, it started heading back towards the road but every time a car went by it would crouch down in fear. It came back to me so I got it and carried it the rest of the way back to our cars. One of my friends took it to work with her. She has sent several pictures of it back since then and a couple of people in her office are interested in giving it home.9 -
@katharmonic Sounds like you killed that tough workout. Congrats! Fingers crossed for good weather on the 7th.
@rheddmobile Can you opt your mom out of those phone notifications? It seems like something you should be able to do. Glad you are feeling better!
@WhatMeRunning Glad the PF is so much better and you woke up with no pain. Sounds like the surgery is coming at a good time, when you were planning to give the foot more rest anyway. I predict once you have recovered from the surgery, you'll be back to running in no time. Praying that all goes well for you.
@Teresa502 Now I know why your MFP newsfeed said you only ran 8 minutes. LOL Glad you had a good run and were able to rescue the kitten. I hope one of your friend's coworkers gives it a good home. It's really cute. Reminds me of my mom's cat.3 -

Thanks everyone...I just got back from Boston yesterday, and boy what a trip that was! As Scott mentioned, the time I ran it was 3:18:04, which is another BQ in itself, but whether it's enough to avoid the cutoff time is another thing.
Those hills at the end though man...brutal! And training was kind of half-assed given the heat of Texas summers, so I did much better than I thought I would.
Hope you're all doing well, stay strong, run safe. 💜

Absolutely. You guys listen to me whine about heat all summer. It's my turn to return the favor!
@WhatMeRunning Good luck with your surgery and recovery. Like @quilteryoyo said, the recovery time may be timed well to help you get over that last hump with your PF too.2 -

Another long run in the rain again today. It's been warmer with a tropical storm moving through, so the rain actually helps quite a bit. After two hours of being wet, my toes are a white wrinkled mess!
This run was hard. My legs were tired from the very beginning, and I think it's time to bump up my calories back up. I have been running a slight deficit (200ish cals a day less than maintenance) to drop a couple pounds that creeped on during the summer. I'm just about where I want to be and the higher mileage is definitely starting to demand more fuel.
I tried two more gels today. The first was another huma that had some electrolytes and was strawberry lemonade flavored. I had been saving it for a day where I thought I might get pretty sweaty so that I could see how the electrolytes sit in my stomach. One of the recommendations for Huma described these as an applesauce consistency. I think that's a pretty fair comparison, but the flavor made me gag. I think for chews I like a tangy fruity flavor, but for gels I'm finding the more desserty flavors are better, like vanilla or chocolate. I think because the gels are so sweet those desserty flavors make more sense and the tart tangy flavours combined with all the sugar just don't taste right. The electrolytes were fine, no stomach issues. Overall, I think the huma gels are good option if I just want to mix it up a little bit but I will stick to the dessert flavors if I do them again.
My second one was a non-caffeinated Clif shot in vanilla flavor. I wanted to test some non-caffeinated gels for longer races when I need to take more than one. This one works well. The vanilla flavor goes well with the sweet taste. It sat easily on my stomach. My only criticism is the consistency is very thick. The flip side of that is that the thickness forces you to drink a decent amount of water, which you really need to maximize the digestion of these gels. The person that recommended them to me said she likes to take half of one at a time, and you could definitely do that with these if you were willing to carry it in your hand until you finished it.
I only have a single non-flavored gu left to sample, and after the maurten experience I am sort of dreading it. I was surprised at how easy gels sat on my stomach given the amount of difficulty I had with various chews over the last couple of years.
I think the honey stinger gels were the best balance of consistency and flavor for me. The Clif shot non-caffeinated version is a good secondary option, as I had a harder time finding non-caffeinated gels. And then, the skratch gummies are a nice backup for in between distances where I may need just a little bit of extra nutrition but not an entire gel.7 -
Thanks @martaindale ! Yeah, I guess I meant in comparison to previous marathon training. 😄2

After yesterday's terrible run I was really kind of dreading today's run. The plan called for 8 miles, which isn't a problem on the weekend, but is kind of hard on a weekday morning before work. I did sleep better last night than I did on Tuesday so that helped. When I headed out it was 64°F, dew point 64° and 100% humidity and foggy. So while it wasn't raining there was moisture just hanging in the air. But thankfully there weren't 20+ mph winds like there were yesterday. There was just a light 4 mph wind. And I had a great run. Yesterday I just wasn't feeling it and I was noticing some niggles that I had never noticed before. But today I felt great and just had a nice run. I didn't try to hit Hal's pace. He actually gives conflicting advice. The plan says 8 miles in 1 hr 17 minutes with a pace of 9:37. Then the workout instructions say: 8 miles @ 9:20 to 9:55 min/mile. Then Hal says: "Eight miles today at an easy pace". Yesterday he gave the same paces and said "Run 5 miles at your normal pace". My normal pace is not 9:37. So today I ran 8.1 miles in 1 hr 30 minutes at a pace of 11:05. He gave me 88% and said great workout.
I'm so glad that today's run was better than yesterday and Tuesday's runs. I saw 6 deer near the park and a skunk. The deer were so pretty and the skunk was far enough away to be pretty cute too.
I still need to catch up on my reading but I do want to say congrats on a great HM to @polskagitl01 and congrats to @runsonesspresso on completing your Marathon by yourself. That's an awesome accomplishment!
Glad to see you back @Orphia!
Those are some bright shoes @katharmonic.
I'm glad you are feeling better @shanaber. I have never seen a bald eagle. That would be really cool.
#quilteryoyo I hope the chiropractor helps your back
Congratulations @garygse!
I am also one who likes women's cut t-shirts and tech fabric. But most races around here just have unisex cotton tees. The ones that do have tech shirts have unisex shirts and they always run big.
And as an accountant I am usually pretty good with numbers, but like most of you I cannot do math while running.

@skippygirlsmom Good to see you! You're amazing getting up at 4:30 am for your running before work! My hero!3 -
@WhatMeRunning hope your surgery goes well and it will be an extra chance to heal up your foot as well.
Congrats again @garygse - great to see your pics.
@teresa502 aww, what an adorable kitty! Thank you for saving it, even if you had to abort your run. I'm sure people are in love and he/she will have a good home immediately.
@martaindale I think I'm the same re flavors for gels vs. chews. I like a gel that is chocolate hazelnut.
Glad you had a better run today @kgirlhart

After work run today - it turned out to be another amazing afternoon. Slightly warm but it cools down so quickly in the evening. I'm still sitting outside with my wine right now but going to need to head in soon because of the dark and getting chilly. I wish this awesome weather was hanging around for the weekend but it looks like rain and cooler temps.
