@mshawski Sorry about your dentist appointment getting cancelled after you had arranged your day around it. I hate it when that happens. Good job on getting it done on the treadmill.
You're doing great @skippygirlsmom . Hope work calms down soon.
That is a lot of intervals @katharmonic ! I hope you got a good night's sleep.
@shanaber Glad you had such a great run with Hobbes. I agree with you about the puppy...sounds like he needs some training with his owner. When Tippy was little, I found a trainer that prefers to do house calls, so she can address the issues that occur at home with the owners. Nice bird pictures. That river is really, really low. Are you all in a drought? (Is that a silly questions?)
@ContraryMaryMary Love the shoe porn. Also glad that you had such a great run, regardless of the reason. I do love that you got the small child to accompany you by saying you would point her to the puddles!

Another short treadmill warmup before strength training this morning. The back-to-back Wednesday night and Thursday morning workouts are always a challenge and I was feeling it today.2 -
~ 50 minutes in the woods. Nothing to see here except the occasional squirrel.

1 Oct - 0.00 miles ran - 1.0 mile walked - driveway laps
2 Oct - 0.00 miles ran - 1.0 mile walked - driveway laps - also sawed and split wood, mowed, and cleaned gutters
3 Oct - 0.00 miles ran - 1.0 mile walked - treadmill
4 Oct - 1.00 mile ran - 1.0 mile walked - treadmill
5 Oct - 3.50 miles ran - 1.0 mile walked - treadmill
6 Oct - 1.00 mile ran - 1.0 mile walked - treadmill
7 Oct - 0.00 mile ran - 1.0 mile walked - driveway laps
5.50/80 miles ran - 7.0/31 miles walked
I was tired when I got home from work today AND my lower back and hip have been bothering me lately. They were a little worse today than usual, so I decided to walk instead of doing the run I had planned. I don't know if the issues are due to sawing wood, or lifting the kids, sitting in the floor, and sitting in short chairs at daycare, or running too much, or a combination of the above. At any rate, a walk seemed to be in order.
Good news, I received my HM swag in the mail today.
Long sleeved shirt, small towel, patch, medal, and nutrition/hydration products.7 -
I'm hopeless at maths when running.
Today's Couch to 5K session was supposed to be two 8-minute intervals with a walk in between.
I failed to hear the app tell me to stop running at the end and ran right through the cooldown walk section.
I kept looking at my watch and trying to add up the walk/run intervals, and wondering wtf was going on, while continuing to run.
This means my second interval was 13 minutes of running.
Hahahaha, oh well, go me!9 -
@orphia - hey nice to see you again! Oh yeah, running math is impossible. Lol, a 13-minute interval you would think you would figure out well before that what was going on, but the brain is apparently partially disconnected while running.
Nice swag @quilteryoyo. The shirt looks nice. Is it a women's cut?
I bring up the women's cut shirt because a friend of mine is starting a little movement locally to boycott races that don't offer women's cut shirts, only unisex. Which is a men's cut shirt. Her point, which I agree with, is that how are we in 2020 accepting that they only offer shirts for men and women should just make do. Of course, some women prefer men's cut and it fits them better, but for many of us, the proportions of the men's cut does not work at all. Often more than half the race registrants are women. Why can't we have the option of a shirt that might fit? This whole conversation also brought up other inequities that are still happening - like a race prize for a trail race that was a nice gift certificate to a store that only had men's clothes. And the woman who won complained and was told she could use it to buy a water bottle or other accessories that were unisex. Of course, it never occurred to them that a woman could win and that they should have a prize that was appropriate. Ridiculous.
We'll see how this pans out locally, but I support it. Already though people are saying "it's going to increase the cost for everyone". Well then race directors, just offer only a "unisex" women's cut and that should be just as cost-effective. See how that goes for you.
Sorry for the rant! I've had a cocktail11 -
I have learned that running math involves double-checking and then triple-checking the result, and then verifying it using a couple other methods, only to have the watch finally chirp something that tells me if I was even close. Sometimes I'm not that far off, but usually it's not worth the effort.
Oh, I have been reading. And lurking. And liking and all that other stuff. Just not been super chatty. This one made me answer for some reason.6 -
October Goal: 111 Miles
10/3: 10.30 miles
10/5: 5.51 miles
10/6: 5.11 miles
10/7: 7.10 miles
28.02/111 miles completed for October
The plan called for 7 miles at HM pace today. I ran 7 miles, but I didn't do it at HM pace. I was tired starting out so I just ran easy. It was a nice run. The weather was good. I didn't see any possums today, but I did see a skunk.
2021 Races:
4/24/21: Run For The Children 10K PR 55:46:28.
11/6/21: Run For 57th AHC Half Marathon

@katharmonic, thanks, and no need to apologise for your rant. Rant warranted.
@WhatMeRunning Thanks. Running maths is a theme that might deserve more discussion.
@kgirlhart Well done for doing the 7 miles easy. 7 miles when tired is still good HM practice.4 -
Running math is definitely a thing - I am SO bad at it. And then I try to focus all of my concentration on it and rework the problem repeatedly in my head, same process @WhatMeRunning described, and I still don't always get it right.
@quilteryoyo great swag!
@katharmonic I agree they should offer women's cut shirts. I also prefer technical fabrics that I would actually run in, rather than the dreaded standard t-shirt. Most races here get both items right. I think they like having women in the race, as there are typically fewer of us, and many people want to change that. One cost-saving option could be to make registration a set lower price, and those who want the shirt can pay for it separately. Some races offer lots of extra gear options and you pick and pay for what you want. A couple of races I did made the medal optional as well. Not everyone wants it. Those who paid for the medal, had a special symbol on their bib, so the folks at the finish line knew who to give one to. You got all of your extra add-ons at packet pickup.
I'm in the "getting anxious and almost excited" phase of pre-race emotions. The course looks tough - a lot of elevation for a road race - but I'm making jokes about it at this point 😆
October Goal 100 miles (200k stretch goal)
Upcoming races:
October 10 - Żywiec lake Half Marathon
October 17 - Gliwicki Half Marathon8 -

Ha. Sounds like something I’d do!2 -
Don’t get me started on race tees.
Too late.
I am a fan of a women’s cut and hate unisex - too baggy and flaps about. However, my bigger bugbear with the Auckland marathon is the women’s colours. It’s a huge event and official t-shirts aren’t free - they’re excellent quality though so I don’t mind buying one.
Both men’s and women’s come in about five colours, both will have black and a grey, then the men’s range will have a couple of blues and maybe a red, the women’s range will have a lighter pink, a bright pink, and a coral pink or a lilac. Every bleeping year.
I complain every year to no effect. The tell me to buy from the men’s range or a singlet (won’t because sunburn). Its not just that I hate pink, but everyone who goes red in the face while running doesn’t want a pink shirt. So annoying. So easy to fix - they make five colours already!
I’ll get off my soapbox now.6 -

Haha, so basically, they're giving you three colors to choose from - and they're all pink! Of course women want pink shirts (NOT!)2 -

10/4 5.84
10/6 5.42

@katharmonic I definitely prefer a women's shirt too; I think it's a good idea to bring attention to it!
@polskagirl01 I would definitely prefer a t-shirt over a medal! A lot of races here have opted into a shirt purchase but you still get the medal and I'd rather it be the other way around! All my race medals rattle around in my kids' dress-up bin and they use them to play Olympics.
@ContraryMaryMary that's annoying! I like pink and wouldn't mind *one* pink shirt, but I like other colors too!3 -

Foggy, mid 60s F with a breeze from the east again today. No niggles until I got to kilometer 6.
Add me to the list of "no maths while running." Of course, I can barely do them on the best of days anyway.
Nice swag, @quilteryoyo !!!
Great to see you back, @Orphia !!!
Certainly valid points about shirts. If they can run the gamut from smallest to largest, they can certainly provide cuts for both genders and choice of colors as well.

Hi @Orphia! Good to see you again
I agree with all the women...this being 2021 it seems ridiculous not to offer gender choices for shirts (and colors).
Thinking all good thoughts for you @polskagirl01 for your upcoming 'hilly' HM.
Very nice swag @quilteryoyo!
7 miles this morning. Legs felt quite a bit better today, but running form felt very choppy. I don't know what it takes to get into a smooth rhythm anymore.

Add me to the list for Women's cut shirts and technical shirts over cotton or cotton blend especially when at many of the races here the women outnumber the men. However, they need to be offered in a range of (true) sizes, not a small that will fit an elephant and all sizes beyond way big or what I see a lot are shirts that run really small. My biggest complaint with the San Francisco marathon (and a few others too) was that the brand of women's cut shirts they always bought were made for tiny women and not all are tiny. I wear a sm/md and the xl was too tight. So how does a bigger woman or one with a normal size chest manage with a shirt like that let alone a well endowed woman. Who wants even a free shirt if they can't or won't wear it?
The 25th anniversary Surf City shirt was a big disappointment. While I was excited to get it it is not a technical shirt - why?? I would wear it often to run in, I do all their other race shirts, but this one I can't... Also it is short sleeve (others have all been long sleeve). I guess they were trying to cut costs but still...
Most of the races here you get a shirt and a medal and there aren't any color choices, they only offer by distance so a marathon runner has one color and HM another. I would love to get a running hat but my favorite has been the jackets.
Wow @polskagirl01, when I saw the elevation chart for your race I thought, assumed it was a trail race! Those are some umm, crazy hills! I think you will do great!
Welcome back @Orphia so good to see you here!
I don't even bother to try to do arithmetic while running. I honestly don't think it can be done, or well, it can be done just not accurately! 😂
I ran yesterday and will post mileage later today. Have appointments today so by default it is a rest day.5
