October Goal: 111 Miles
10/3: 10.30 miles
10/5: 5.51 miles
15.81/111 miles completed for October
I had a great run this morning. It was 59/60°F with a dew point of 52°. It was just a really nice morning. The plan called for 4.5 miles in 44 minutes with an average pace of 9:48. But it also said to run 4.5 miles at a comfortable pace. So I just ran. I ended up with 5.5 miles in 58 minutes at an average pace of 10:36 which is a comfortable pace for me at 60°.
@ereck44 I'm so sorry you were sick and missed your race.
@rheddmobile I'm glad you didn't step on the snake.

90 minutes today - and it was so slow. I am blaming yesterday’s faster run. I felt fine, my legs were happy but I couldn’t get any speed out of them. They didn’t feel heavy or sore, and when I got home I mowed the lawn for about an hour and a half, but they just weren’t up to moving quickly.6
-
I just did a quick run today, took the longer way home after school drop-off for. Also almost tripped on the way there, because someone lost their maple leaves they needed for school and I was looking at trees trying to find replacements, instead of the sidewalk. Noticed it just in time.
I finally wrote to the nearby animal shelter that I run by a lot, and asked if they need volunteers - because I could come regularly and take some of their active dogs for walks/runs. But they "don't need volunteers". Oh well. I've never heard of an animal shelter not needing volunteers... but then I've never seen one so far out in the middle of nowhere, with signs all over their gates forbidding photography and unauthorized entry, etc. I also thought their Facebook post asking for a photographer volunteer was strangely worded (They stressed that you only come at prearranged times, only enter the facility with the director, who takes you to the dogs who need photographed for the website, etc.). Maybe it's some weird cultural thing I don't understand, maybe I'm being unreasonably suspicious, or maybe it's just best to run on past and stay away from whatever is happening inside 🤷♀️.3 -
Distance Log:
10/2 6.46
10/4 5.84
10/6 5.42
Total: 17.72/75 miles
@quilteryoyo My usual route is a combination of trail and road. It's early enough in the morning that there are very few cars, and I run with only one earbud turned down pretty low. I feel like my awareness of my surroundings is pretty good. It's dark for my entire run now, so approaching headlights are visible, but even in the middle of summer when it was light I could hear them very well.
Today's run felt kind of meh, though I really can't speak to why. Low 60s, a little more humid than I'd like but not awful. I did get a little bit of a late start so I felt very conscious of the time - I was constantly checking my watch to make sure I got home in plenty of time to get the kids ready for school. Maybe if I'd gotten out of bed first thing as I should have I wouldn't have felt so hurried!3 -
7 miles this morning. Recovery run from my recovery run yesterday. First 3.5 miles I was crawling, then second 3.5 felt more like myself. Averaged 1:30/mi faster the 2nd half, and HR was lower too.

That does seem odd. Our county shelter is always looking for people to volunteer. Even the non-county, not for profit rescues always seem to need volunteers2 -
Easy jaunt through the woods for almost 59 minutes. The traffic on the trail is picking up. I guess more people are hitting it in the morning since the available daylight in the evenings is quickly dwindling.
5.1 miles @ 11:26 pace
28.8 out of 125 done for the month.2 -
Glad you had a nice run @kgirlhart !
@ContraryMaryMary It's hard to run when you feel that way....and then to come home and mow. You did great!
@polskagirl01 Glad you didn't trip on your run. It is weird that the animal shelter wouldn't want volunteers to help walk/run their dogs. I wonder if it is a shelter for aggressive dogs, or maybe it's a liability issue? Does seem odd to me too.
@penguinmama87 I'm glad you can do that and be safe. I have the bone conduction head phones that I use to listen to music. So, it's not the volume, or plugged ears. I'm just afraid that I would be trying so hard to pay attention to what is happening in the story that I wouldn't be paying attention and, even though my ears would hear a car, it wouldn't register in my brain until it was too late. I guess I'm not good at multi-tasking when I'm running. I often wish I had gotten up earlier, once I'm up....not while I'm still in bed, hitting the snooze.
@Scott6255 Glad the second half of your run was better.1 -

It was in the low 60’s this morning with humidity in the upper 80% range. So nice! I love not being a sweaty mess when I get back from a run! Hopefully this is real fall, and it won’t get much warmer than this for a few months.1 -

Cloudy, low 60s F, with a fitful breeze from the south. Unlike @ContraryMaryMary, my legs and feet took their revenge today for probably going a little too hard yesterday.
@polskagirl01 I suspect you might want to steer clear of something that may not be what it appears to be...
When you pop in here claiming your December 2021 mileage, what accomplishments will you have made?

Today I had another great fall morning run. It was 55°F with a dew point of 48°. I ignored Hal's plan which was the same as yesterday's run and rN 5 miles wit. Pace of 10:38. It was a lovely run. I saw a little possum this morning. I was running downtown and he was right on the sidewalk. He wasn't quite full grown. The rest of the run was uneventful, but very pleasant.
@polskagirl01 That sounds very suspicious and kind of creepy to me.

@martaindale Glad you had a nice run today and the weather is finally cooler - hopefully to stay.
@Tramboman Way to get the run done, despite your legs and feet being vengeful.
@kgirlhart Glad you had a nice run this morning. Baby possums are kind of cute. Can't really say the same thing about full grown ones.1 -
1 Oct - 0.00 miles ran - 1.0 mile walked - driveway laps
2 Oct - 0.00 miles ran - 1.0 mile walked - driveway laps - also sawed and split wood, mowed, and cleaned gutters
3 Oct - 0.00 miles ran - 1.0 mile walked - treadmill
4 Oct - 1.00 mile ran - 1.0 mile walked - treadmill
5 Oct - 3.50 miles ran - 1.0 mile walked - treadmill
6 Oct - 1.00 mile ran - 1.0 mile walked - treadmill
5.50/80 miles ran - 6.0/31 miles walked
I was off work today, so had planned to sleep a little bit later, but set my alarm for 6:30 so I could get some things done before leaving at 11 to meet 8 of my tennis peeps for lunch to celebrate the two who turned/are turning 80 and 81 years old. But, like @penguinmama87 I didn't get up when the alarm went off. I hit the snooze for 1.5 hours! That put me a bit behind, but I did manage to get everything done that I needed to before I left. Unfortunately, I did have to modify my workout a little and shorten my planned run.
I did a treadmill session. Ran 1.0 mile at 4.5 mph, sandwiched in between half mile walks at 3.8 mph. Since my planned called for 40 minutes easy or cross training, I figure this is a good compromise.

Total October mileage
Walking: 2.5/10
Running: 9.5/40
Total miles on sneakers (for my own replacement purposes): 18.5
Today was less adventurous than my last run. Ran on the treadmill because I was supposed to have a dentist appointment and woke up too late to get to the trail, and they called and cancelled said apt at the end of the run. I'm honestly impressed the POS that is my treadmill still works, it's been forever since I've been on it.
Tomorrow is a rest day. I have not had a scheduled rest day in like 9 months. I'm unsure what to do with myself (walk, yoga, etc?) I need to like yoga more than I do.6 -
10/1 – 3.01

@rheddmobile that’s quite a snake!
Things are crazy at work, I at last wanted to drop in with my mileage. I did read most of the posts here!

@quilteryoyo that's a lot of snoozing! You must have needed the sleep. Good job getting everything done though
@polskagirl01 that does seem weird and a little suspicious about the dog shelter. Maybe it is some special population of dogs as was mentioned.

I'm about to fall asleep myself so just posting quickly. Tonight's HM/marathon group speedwork was 2 min intervals x 14 with 90 seconds recovery between for first half and 60 seconds for second half of the set. That was a lot of intervals.2 -
It has cooled off (yay!) and I had a lovely run this morning, so much so that I didn't want to stop and just kept running. Ended up with just under 7 miles... should have gone once more around the cut-de-sac!
It was also the first run in a while with Hobbes the Vizsla. I really do enjoy it more when he is with me. There weren't many people out but we did get to meet a couple of pups out with their owners. There was a beautiful silver lab puppy who was out for a walk with her parents. While she was pretty, she was incredibly aggressive for a 7mo puppy. I actually thought she wasn't well socialized when she literally attacked Hobbes growling and biting at him (not in a puppy play manner). Her owner said she was around lots of other dogs at 'bootcamp' though. I am not a big fan of bootcamps for dogs. I think training and addressing issues like aggression with the owner are important. Fortunately at the end of our run we met a golden retriever we have seen before and Hobbes got to play until her owner needed to head home.
We also saw lots of birds, squirrels and bunniesAccording to the Merlin Bird ID this is most likely a white-faced ibis. To me it looks more like the glossy ibis. I have not seen it before and both are rare.
Hiding in the far grasses is a large flock of geese
The water level is so low that flowers are growing in the river bed
I thought this was an osprey but when I saw it fly away I wasn't so sure. It had the correct coloring underneath but not the typical white on its head. Maybe a juvenile though. I see them pretty often along the trail and along the river so not a stretch to consider it. Definitely not a sharp-shinned or red tail which are also pretty common in this area.7 -
After yesterday’s 90 minute slogfest, I was feeling lethargic and a little achey this morning. I had 60 minutes aerobic scheduled but I procrastinated with housework, then work-work, then yoga, then more work, etc.
Finally, at about 4:30, by which time it had started raining, I summoned the necessary, roped in a small child to accompany me on her bike for the first half on the promise I would be slow and I’d direct her towards puddles, and tee’d up another slightly larger small child for the second half.
As I was about to put on my shoes, a courier arrived with a brand new pair of Asics Gel Persue 7s, so I put those on instead and headed out.
Couldn’t believe it. The shoes felt fab. My legs felt great, and within 100 metres I had a big smile on my face and I knew it was going to be a fantastic run.
No idea why - could be the shoes, could have been the rain (lovely soft warm steady spring rain), could have been the child, could have been the yoga, the full day of eating, my second vaccination yesterday (I felt tired for about three weeks after my first jab, no side effects this time round is an unexpected bonus), or could have all been in my head. Who knows? But it worked.
Shoe porn in spoiler.7 -
@mshawski Sorry about your dentist appointment getting cancelled after you had arranged your day around it. I hate it when that happens. Good job on getting it done on the treadmill.
You're doing great @skippygirlsmom . Hope work calms down soon.
That is a lot of intervals @katharmonic ! I hope you got a good night's sleep.
@shanaber Glad you had such a great run with Hobbes. I agree with you about the puppy...sounds like he needs some training with his owner. When Tippy was little, I found a trainer that prefers to do house calls, so she can address the issues that occur at home with the owners. Nice bird pictures. That river is really, really low. Are you all in a drought? (Is that a silly questions?)
@ContraryMaryMary Love the shoe porn. Also glad that you had such a great run, regardless of the reason. I do love that you got the small child to accompany you by saying you would point her to the puddles!

I was tired when I got home from work today AND my lower back and hip have been bothering me lately. They were a little worse today than usual, so I decided to walk instead of doing the run I had planned. I don't know if the issues are due to sawing wood, or lifting the kids, sitting in the floor, and sitting in short chairs at daycare, or running too much, or a combination of the above. At any rate, a walk seemed to be in order.
Good news, I received my HM swag in the mail today.
Long sleeved shirt, small towel, patch, medal, and nutrition/hydration products.7 -
I'm hopeless at maths when running.
Today's Couch to 5K session was supposed to be two 8-minute intervals with a walk in between.
I failed to hear the app tell me to stop running at the end and ran right through the cooldown walk section.
I kept looking at my watch and trying to add up the walk/run intervals, and wondering wtf was going on, while continuing to run.
This means my second interval was 13 minutes of running.
Hahahaha, oh well, go me!9 -
@orphia - hey nice to see you again! Oh yeah, running math is impossible. Lol, a 13-minute interval you would think you would figure out well before that what was going on, but the brain is apparently partially disconnected while running.
Nice swag @quilteryoyo. The shirt looks nice. Is it a women's cut?
I bring up the women's cut shirt because a friend of mine is starting a little movement locally to boycott races that don't offer women's cut shirts, only unisex. Which is a men's cut shirt. Her point, which I agree with, is that how are we in 2020 accepting that they only offer shirts for men and women should just make do. Of course, some women prefer men's cut and it fits them better, but for many of us, the proportions of the men's cut does not work at all. Often more than half the race registrants are women. Why can't we have the option of a shirt that might fit? This whole conversation also brought up other inequities that are still happening - like a race prize for a trail race that was a nice gift certificate to a store that only had men's clothes. And the woman who won complained and was told she could use it to buy a water bottle or other accessories that were unisex. Of course, it never occurred to them that a woman could win and that they should have a prize that was appropriate. Ridiculous.
We'll see how this pans out locally, but I support it. Already though people are saying "it's going to increase the cost for everyone". Well then race directors, just offer only a "unisex" women's cut and that should be just as cost-effective. See how that goes for you.
Sorry for the rant! I've had a cocktail11 -
I have learned that running math involves double-checking and then triple-checking the result, and then verifying it using a couple other methods, only to have the watch finally chirp something that tells me if I was even close. Sometimes I'm not that far off, but usually it's not worth the effort.
Oh, I have been reading. And lurking. And liking and all that other stuff. Just not been super chatty. This one made me answer for some reason.6 -

The plan called for 7 miles at HM pace today. I ran 7 miles, but I didn't do it at HM pace. I was tired starting out so I just ran easy. It was a nice run. The weather was good. I didn't see any possums today, but I did see a skunk.
