October total: 13.1/80 miles
10/1: 10 miles
10/4: 3.1 miles
It was a touch cooler this morning. It’s still getting pretty hot during the day but temps are headed in the right direction! I ran a nice easy recovery run this morning. After a 10 mile long run and an almost 10 mile hike this weekend, my legs needed some recovery.
I went camping for the first time this weekend at a state park not too far from my house. It was supposed to be rainy all weekend, but I got lucky and the rain burned itself out Friday morning and I ended up with a humid but otherwise nice weekend. I hiked around the park trails, ending up with about 9.9 miles of hiking. There were shockingly few mosquitos. Just a few sluggish ones around the campsite Saturday night and none on the trails. I stopped for 20 mins or so to have lunch and sat on a log and nothing, not a single bite. It was crazy! Learned a few things but overall camping was a success and I already have a couple of weekends booked for October and December.
My parents recently got an RV that they are transitioning to live in full-time. They are going to be at a state park close enough to me in December so I am going up to meet them for a weekend with my daughter. We will camp in our tent next to them in their RV. Should be a fun weekend and a chance for her to see her grandparents for the first time since the pandemic started!6 -

Good morning. I got a 1 mile walk and a 3.65 mile run in.
Total October mileage
Walking: 2/10
Running: 6.5/40
Total miles on sneakers (for my own replacement purposes): 15
It was a lovely rainy run, but the data from it is unreliable at best. I decided not to put my watch in water mode because I wanted to be able to skip songs on my playlist as needed (I am one of those people that never lets one song finish, and can listen to a song no stop one day and not want to hear it the next). Twice during the first mile walk it broke out segments, which I didn't even know was a thing but google tells me you do that by double tapping the screen. I assumed it was the rain, so I moved it so the face of my watch was on the underside of my wrist. Then 0.5 miles into my run, I came across a boom mower mowing the sides of the trail (this beast of a machine was way too big for that trail LOL). I can only assume the operator thought since it was raining there would be no one on the trail because he did not check to see if anyone was behind him. I spent a few minutes jogging in place before kind of running through the thorn bushes on the side of the trail to get around him. I got around him and happily ran the next 1.5 miles. Then coming back I ran into him again, and apparently startled him... and he knocked down a small tree across the trail. Enter me running in place for several minutes again while he removed the tree from the trail. During this time I checked my watch to see how badly it was messing up my pace and... apparently my watch had been paused since I had stopped for a minute to pass him the first time. LOL. I'm not sure it it was the rain, if it sensed I stopped, or if I bent my hand to move a bush out of my way and hit the dial weird since I had flipped it to the underside of my wrist. I stopped my watch at the end of my normal 3 miles I've run enough consistently to just be able to manually enter the information based off a previous run, deleted that info from MFP, then started a new workout for the added 0.5 miles I was adding to start upping my mileage so the watch recorded that.
LOL. So much for keeping good data on all my runs as I up my mileage.
Is there a lifetime achievement award for "ran in place after scaring a boom mower operator into knocking down a tree?" Do I get a badge of some sorts? 😂🧐10 -
@Teresa502 - That's super awesome that you have friends close to where you work that let you shower there! And I agree on the Planet Fitness cleanliness factor... 😬
@martaindale - Your campsite looks lovely and very relaxing!
@ereck44 - Sorry you missed the race, but glad you're feeling better!2 -
I haven't checked in for a few days. I've been running. Did 5 this morning.
25/ 48.2 for 10/1-10/10
I hired a running coach to start on 10/25. She said she'd give me 2 weeks off after a marathon so I'll do some walking and yoga. Maybe hop on the bike & easy hikes those 2 weeks. Then back at it.
I officially signed up for a 50k in March so that's what the coach will help me with between now and then.5 -

Golf today instead of running.
Since I spent most of my ill-formed youth in the woods and on the trout streams, identifying leaves and trout species was something I was taught from an early age. I was in such a rush I forgot to mention hickory and beech.

I've read through but hopelessly behind so apologies for not commenting.
@rheddmobile and @mshawski I had my phone in my pocket in the rain one day and it texted a friend of mine several texts of gibberish to the point she called me to see if I was ok. This is one:

I don't think I posted yet in October and there's not much to report. I had a work video conference on Friday and Saturday so I didn't get a run in at all on Friday and only a "short long" run on Saturday. Sunday was just a mopey, rainy day and I also went into work to get some other stuff done. Today was also rainy and dreary but I took Stella out for a short trail run after work. It was still drizzling but we got a little bit done before I went to strength training.

@katharmonic Your poor friend probably thought you’d had a stroke!
Speaking of Strava, I can’t remember the last time it worked properly for me. Today it cut out so often that it only recorded half the distance my husband got on his watch, on the same run. I looked back at last month and it has been almost every run for a month.
Today was speedwork, which consisted of a mile time trial to figure out where we stand right now and some intervals. Last year we did a challenge which was a mile time trial followed by a month training plan and a second time trial - our initial mile at the beginning of last year’s challenge was 8:24 if I remember right, and we ended up not that much faster due to an injury. PR mile time is just under 8 minutes at the end of last year. So, today we did 8:43 - not great but not too shameful considering it was net uphill and we haven’t done much running this summer. And also we are both carrying about five pounds more. Got our work cut out for us.
Fortunately we were NOT in the middle of our time trial when we encountered our daily snake, because as it was I barely braked in time to avoid stepping on him and if I had been running hard it would have happened! A smallish copperhead was stretched out at the side of the trail, mingling with leaves and gravel, and my husband has a bad habit of shoving me off the trail when we run side by side. He runs on the left and is supposed to drop back so we go in single file when someone passes, but he tends to just crowd me off the trail instead. Fortunately I noticed that the stick coming up on the right as a bicycle passes us looked a bit suspicious! Yiped, jumped backwards, and bubba decided to follow me into middle of the trail! He wasn’t particularly aggressive but he locked eyes with me and kept following me around and would not get out of our way. Go away, Mister! I got no quarrel with you!
We waved down a couple of careless bicycles which would have put an end to Mister Snake, and eventually he crossed the trail and went away.
(Snake trigger warning)Nothing to see here!
Waiting on him to leave, from a safe distance.8 -
I've been liking and hugging you all, just not in the mood for commenting.
6 miles this morning. 59F and light breeze. It would have been a crime not to run. Still hurting, but getting used to it.

Headed over to the RTP trails this morning. Started getting my stuff ready when I go there and realized that I left the key card for my car in my shorts on Saturday, so I have no way to lock my car during the run unless I wanted to carry my phone in my hand. Uh, no. Drove back home without running. Since we are 1 car family now, I had to turn it over to my wife so she could take the little one to school. So, I decided to just hit the roads and greenway around the neighborhood. I came to a very interesting realization. Keeping any easy pace on the roads is way more difficult for me than when running trails. I think my body wants to go back to a specific rhythm from before I retired from running and I'm just not capable of sustaining those paces right now. Easy runs used to be 8:30ish pace for a long time, but that's probably close to my lactic threshold right now. So on these road runs, I'm struggling to reign in the pace to keep it easy. This is reflected in the heart rate as well. Anyway, I guess I'll just have to keep fighting it until the fitness level returns.
4.25 miles @ 9:29 pace
23.7 out of 125 for the month8 -

Really nice consistency there on the quarters with the final ones being faster. Well done.

@katharmonic - That is quite the text! LOL. Your poor friend must have been so confused
Today is not a run day, it's a strength day at the gym.6 -
@ereck44 Sorry you were sick and had to miss your HM. Glad you are feeling better and Yeah for your horse. What is it's name?
@CarsonSurfs Sounds like a nice weekend and great attitude about your comeback to running. You are doing great. Nice run today. Trails and roads are really different. I think you are doing great.
Nice running @penguinmama87 . Do you run mostly on trails? I'm afraid to listen to books on tape when running on the road because I fear I would be concentrating on the book and not on listening for traffic. Sorry your narrator changed. Things like that can be really annoying.
Glad you got back into the gym @johnisrunning . I'm guessing you are a treadmill hater. I really don't mind them and actually kind of like running on them for speed work. It helps me keep my pace up and consistent. Nice running today! Those are excellent paces.
Thanks @Teresa502 . I hope your gyms open soon. Are you going to run the Pioneer 5 miler this year?
Thanks @martaindale . I wouldn't choose to do all of those things in one day, but sometimes you just have to go with the flow. Sounds like you had a great weekend. Love the pictures of your campsite and hiking!
@mshawski I think you win in that category. Nice job running. I hate it when I forget to turn my watch back on, or forget to turn it off when I stop. Mine isn't touch screen, so I think that helps, actually.
@RunsOnEspresso I hope you enjoy your coach!
@rheddmobile Hahaha about the belly dancing outfit. What did your friend think about that?
@katharmonic Haha about the pocket dialed phone messages. Nice of your friend to call to make sure you were okay.
Great pace @rheddmobile . Glad you didn't step on the snake too.
Sorry you are still hurting @Scott6255 . Don't overdo and increase your injury.
Glad you had a great run @Tramboman !

Not actually a treadmill hater at all! My comment had been more intended to show how long it had been since I had access to one. But I am also glad that I don't run exclusively on a treadmill anymore.
I will need to get back on the treadmill soon enough to get back to some level of hill training. The area I live in is too flat to train hills properly.

I worked yesterday and then had to run some errands, so didn't get home until after 6:30 pm. Since I hadn't eaten much during the day and was hungry and needed to try to get to bed earlier (didn't really) I decided to not do my 40 min easy run the plan called for. But, I wanted to do something besides walk, so I went down for a treadmill session and walked half mile each for a warm up and cool down and then ran a mile at 5mph pace. That felt pretty good and was really all the time I had. I hope to maybe run a bit more tonight, since I don't have to work tomorrow.
BTW, I'm sitting at daycare watching the kids take a nap and using my time wisely to catch up on everyone and get a couple of other computer based things accomplished. Glad we have that luxury, as long as all the kids are asleep.4 -
@johnisrunning That makes sense. I guess since I have a treadmill at home, I assume everyone does. I don't have to worry about having no hills here in E. TN. That's all we have, unless you use a treadmill or run on a school track. I do like to use my treadmill if it is too cold out, or dark, or I just want to run a certain pace. But, it is hard to get back into running outside once I've run a lot on the treadmill in the winter....well, not hard, just different. Doing a little of both is probably the best way to go.1

I just keep telling myself it was just a leaf or an acorn... even when there are snails and slugs all over the sidewalk. I dedinitely try to avoid them, but realistically it's not always going to be possible. *shudder*
I went out cross country today in search of new paths... found what would be a nice shortcut through the woods in-between lakes, but halfway through I saw some sort of encampment ahead - tarp tent etc, probably a fisherman as there are always guys fishing in that area, but going into someone's camp alone in the woods is a big NOPE for me, so I turned and went another way. The other path I tried headed towards that mud bog field I went through not long ago, but this time I turned the other way. That tractor path was pretty small and I was afraid of stepping on whatever was planted in the field, so it wasn't the best either. The new paths were kind of meh, but it is really pretty out and Fall is officially on. I enjoyed being away from regular roads. We don't get as much color variety in the leaves as back in Pennsylvania, but the yellows are pretty here.
Nothing was working today - I had one thing to do on my computer, which initially worked up until I had to attach receipts to an online insurance form and hit "submit"... but then the internet cut out, the wireless doesn't work on it and from then on, every time I plugged in the Ethernet cable, every device in the house lost internet, including the computer. Reset everything, couldn't get internet back on the computer. Guess I'll try again tomorrow, and I hope it saved what I had already entered. When I rode my bike the 1 mile round trip to the school, I got back and had to use my inhaler before I could make lunch. Then I got a big headache. But one girl from running club was going to be running, so I took ibuprofen (not good before running, but I have no current injuries to pay attention to and my really head hurt) and went to meet her. It was exactly what I needed, because I feel so much better now.
I tried uploading pictures, but the internet is acting up again. Probably won't be able to even post this. Sigh.
Re: treadmills. I spent my road bike money on one during the total lockdown and do use it for speedwork during winter, as well as other runs when it's too icy to run, or when air quality is bad. Which is all winter-time. It's been covered with plastic for months. I watch trail videos while running. And I have forest wallpaper in front of and beside me when I'm on it, so I can imagine I'm somewhere else.8 -
I should add, that's a real bummer about being sick and missing your race @ereck44 ☹1
-
5 miles this morning.
Yesterday & today I'm pretty sure I side stepped a potato on the sidewalk. Yesterday I thought it was a rock until right on top of it. Then I forgot about it and again thought it was a rock.
30/48.2 + ??6 -
@polskagirl01 Sorry the new paths were meh, but glad you got out and got to see the pretty fall colors. I hate having internet issues, which I have all the time. I hope it is all working tomorrow. Glad you had a nice run and feel better afterwards.
Nice run @RunsOnEspresso . What is a potato doing on your sidewalk?2 -
I'm not working tomorrow, so was able to take the time to do my planned run this evening. I did run it on the treadmill, since it was already getting dark when I got started.
I ran a Fast Finish Run: 5 min @ 4.5 mph, 4 min @ 5.0/ 1 min @ 3.8, run/walk of 2x(9/1 minutes @ 5.0/3.8 mph), 10 minutes @ 5.5 mph, then 2:32 min @ 4.2 to get to a good mileage to stop. So, ran 3.5 miles and walked a total of 1.0 mile for warm up and cool down.3 -

I've been trying to commit to a run on Tuesdays and sometimes Thursdays with a couple of friends who are teachers, and due to their schedules can meet for an after-school run before having to shuttle kids around or get dinner going. It's a little early for me to leave work but I have been putting it on my schedule when I can. Today worked and we ran the roads and parking lots around their school. I know we all rely on each other to get this run done because it's way too easy to say "I'm too busy today", so I appreciate it and the time to catch up and de-stress.
