So I looked up some of the big-name marathons here. This might be depressing for some of you:SpoilerMany are around $25 for early registration. Most expensive I found was Warsaw, which started at 200 zΕoty with no shirt ($50 / β¬43), then went up from there - max you'd pay was 390 zΕ ($98 / β¬85) for late registration with 2 shirts (1 cotton, 1 technical).
I believe I paid $20 in the city where I lived, for early registration for a road marathon, which included the technical shirt, medal, race-branded bag, pack of pasta, sponge, post race meal/drinks/massages etc. At least one year, that included a concert & pasta party the night before.
Trail races are pretty similar in price, maybe slightly higher. Probably because you have to contract with national parks and mountain rescue services, and the events are going to last longer.3 -
The 50k I registered for was $115 plus fees before the firat price hike. I would guess a lot of that is for the county park permit since they start set up days before and the race covers 2 days and almost every trail in the park. They also have their own medical service on site to call instead of 911.
You can not order the tshirt and save less than $8. It's basically saving the tax lol3 -
@rheddmobile That could be part of it too. Who knows. I did some of my back exercises yesterday and it feels a tad better today. Hurts the most when I bend over and try to pull or pick up something and when I lift up my right leg to do things like put my pants on. But, I am hopeful since it is a bit better today. I'm going to do the exercises a couple of times today and ice it again tonight. I think I'll put off running for a few days and just walk though, because I feel like it it throwing off my gait and I think that would make it worse. Nice run on Wednesday and hike yesterday. That spider is a pretty color, for a spider.

A big part of the cost here in the states is the liability insurance. People will sue you for farting on them in a race.6 -

@polskagirl01 yes, a bit jealous of your reasonable registration fees. I was going to sign up for a half next week and it was $80 so I decided not to. Plus it has a unisex race jacket. A jacket I can kind of see unisex for, but I hated to compromise my principles immediately!
I don't think I've ever seen a choice of colors for race t-shirts. And certainly not different color choices for men and women.
I'm ok with taking the t-shirt out of the registration fee and making it separate but I'm sure it won't reduce registration fees, just add on extra for also getting a shirt.

Easy peasy 48 minutes through the woods in the rain. Had a box turtle run across the path in front of me. Well, he as actually just kind of standing there.

Back/hip/leg still hurting, esp in the morning and when I sit. It was a little bit better today than it was yesterday. I'm hoping the exercises/stretches are working. Mom and I ran errands all day today. I went for a walk when I got home. The weather was beautiful this evening.7 -
@polskagirl01 - if we had prices like that for races I would be tempted to enter many more races! As it is it limits what I am willing to sign up for especially if there is any uncertainty about being able to actually run.

Some of you may have seen my post on my newsfeed, same post below essentially.
Had my annual physical yesterday and got the flu shot while I was there. Apparently when you are 65+ you get a 'high' dose version and it has kicked my butt. First, noticed my arm itching and not too long after my arm was very swollen, red and itchy. Bring on the Benadryl which helped immensely. I was exhausted though when I went to bed and slept close to 9 hours and had to drag myself out of bed. I wanted to take Hobbes for a good long walk if not a run before his vet appointment later in the morning and only made it part way around the block before turning back home. Other than taking him the the vet I have been wrapped in a blanket watching college football and napping all day. Arm remains red, itchy, hot and swollen... Hope I feel better tomorrow, we are having some pretty awesome running weather and I would really like to take advantage of it.10 -
Hey guys. Iβm back after being MIA for quite awhile. Life has thrown a lot at me - new job with new schedule, dad in and out of the hospital, hubby getting ready for extended work travel - and I have been very all over the place with running and diet. I think things are more settled now, and Iβm ready to get back in a groove.
Iβll catch up on everyoneβs post over the next few days. I hope you have all been doing well.
I am considering the Atlanta Marathon at the end of February. I think if I buckle down now, Iβm still in a place physically where I can appropriately train and do well. I took my training plan from the Wineglass Marathon and tweaked it some to a plan that I think will work for this one. I think I am going to follow the plan over the next month or so and see how I feel and then decide if I will register or not.11 -

Yesterday's rain has abated leaving cooler overcast weather. Pretty decent conditions for a long run. I decided to keep it easy today and run the ATT because it's relatively flat and straight. Did a hair over 10 miles at easy effort. First 9 miles were right around 10 minutes, give or take 10 seconds. Felt good at the end so I did the last mile at a picked up pace, which came out to be 9:04. Felt really good to get the legs moving like that again.

12 miles this morning. 73F with a stiff 17mph wind was a little bit of a challenge today, but felt reasonably good. Didn't use any of my "band-aids" for my legs (KT tape, compression socks, knee straps) and they felt good after the first mile. Went out to do a comfortably hard effort, and that's pretty much what it felt like. Will be doing a mini taper this next week so hopefully I will be fresh for Saturday's race.

Race report!
Ε»ywiec lake Half MarathonNow to recover and get ready for next week's half marathon, to complete the challenge and earn the "crown" title.SpoilerI'd heard it was a hard course ("one of the hardest [road] half marathons in the country" said the organizers, and people from running club had a few comments about "oh, that's a hard one"). So I was prepared to go easy if needed.
Charming town near a big lake in the mountains, known for the Ε»ywiec brewery. I got a room due to logistics with my husband and our car, and at check-in was informed that checkout was moved later so that runners could leave our bags and have time to shower and change after the race. Awesome surprise. I was really nervous and stressing out over every detail, basically until I got to the start line. It was colder than I expected, and I almost switched to the long tights I had packed, but changed my mind again because I had only brought a small waist-pack and my shorts have a pocket big enough for my phone. Wore long compression socks and arm sleeves (and a light jacket over everything to the start, and wrapped it around my waist until after the race).
It really was challening for a road half marathon. Constantly up and down. I did my little power-hike thing on many of the uphills (passing quite a few people who were running) and took off running on the downhills. One girl was near me for the entire race - she'd pass me going up; I'd pass her going down. Actually there were several people like that, but I lost track of where we finished. While I knew I was making better use of my energy, I wasn't sure if she maybe had more energy overall, as her pace was impressively steady for all that elevation change.. but then there was that 1km uphill, followed by 1km down near the end, and I knew after I passed her going down that if I just kept running, she wouldn't catch me unless she had an amazing finish kick. I think she was the little blue spot in the background of my finish picture.
Can I just say though, that never in my life have I seen so many grown men have to stop what they're doing to go pee? They were constantly running off into the trees, bushes... even the ambulance driver stopped to use a porta-potty! Was there some sort of joke going on?
The scenery was absolutely GORGEOUS. I didn't take pictures while running, but picture a Fall day with changing leaves, a lake with sailboats and the sun shining nicely. Had to remind myself at times to look where I was going. Asthma was not a problem today AT ALL. It's so random. I'm very satisfied with my time, especially considering the course and all the uphill hiking I did. There were timing mats every 5k, and stats show I was steadily moving up in placement. Not winning any awards or breaking records, but feeling great and enjoying what I'm doing. So I count that as a big fat WIN!

@Tramboman - I contacted my PCP as soon as I realized what was going on. I felt weird (dizzy, lightheaded, foggy) but wasn't having any breathing issues. She recommended the topical Benadryl but if I started wheezing or having any breathing issues to go straight to the ER.
I am wondering if I will have a reaction every time I get the flu shot now and if I will need to be careful next time that it could be worse. For sure I will not be getting this high dose shot again.
Today it is really nice out - sunny and mid 50's this morning! Too bad I am just too tired to go out for even a walk and it is supposed to get hot again later today. Up to 90 again.
My arm remains unchanged - swollen red and itchy, so I am guessing my body is still in reaction mode. If it isn't better tomorrow I will be contacting the doctor again.7 -

I can't believe you are running another one next weekend (hopefully it isn't quite so hilly!) but have no doubt you will earn that crown!2 -
After 10 easy miles this morning, I decided to run the last 5K of my long run at tempo heart rate to see how strong I could finish while fatigued, without pushing too hard. The final 5K clocked in at 22:10 (after running the previous 10 miles in 1:24:02). So, overall, a mixed pace half marathon in 1:46:12, plus a brief cool down to get back home.

I ran a virtual 5K this morning and then did some ab work. The weather here is finally starting to get a little cooler, so I hope to have pleasant temps for my runs soon.3 -

@shanaber β I had not heard of the high-dose flu shot until yesterday. I got my flu shot at work last week and I assume it was just the standard dose.
Well done @polskagirl01! Sounds like you managed those hills just fine. I love that you share a bit of Poland with us in your race reports.

Well, I finished my marathon today. No real race report lol I started a few minutes after 5 since I woke up at 4. My DH and dog met me at about the half way point at a nature area to swap bottles of skratch. I walked with them for a bit. I was feeling really great until mile 20. The last 10k was definitely more mental. I walked 2 of the last 6 miles. I tried to finish in under 6 hours but just missed with 6:01:55.
It was hard being a lone runner but I imagined everyone I passed in either direction was doing it with me as well.
I looked at my watch at 26.16 and got a little overwhelmed with emotions and almost cried. 26.22 today

Oh, my new shoes came! I wore them this morning and I didn't have quite the fabulous run experience I was hoping for but the cushiony feeling was a definite improvement. I forgot to take pics and now I'm too lazy but they are bright fuchsia pink Brooks ghost 14s. I mean bright 6 -
