@katharmonic - I waited until this morning to read your report and I am so glad I did! What an awesome accomplishment. The pictures are fantastic and you do look so happy! Where are the pine martins? I was hoping for that picture as I have never seen one. I would have been so angry with that friend. I hope he was at least apologetic, understanding what he put you all through.
@AlphaHowls - sending you {{{HUGS}}} It is so hard watching someone you love decline. It will be a shock for your brother even having seen her in video chats.
@quilteryoyo - I tried it too before I went to bed last night (on the bed) and couldn't do it for long either. I need to do it on the floor and when I am not physically exhausted. I always find it so amazing how interconnected every part of our body is and how an issue in one area will cause weakness or an issue somewhere else.1 -
I wanted to hit 5 miles today, but my body was not feeling it. 4 it was.

@katharmonic Wow, that is an amazing accomplishment! Congratulations! Pictures are great.
@AlphaHowls sorry you and your family are going through this hard time. Very difficult to watch your parent fade like that. Hugs to you, your Mom, and family2 -
@AlphaHowls - I'm so sorry to hear about your mom. Hugs to you and your family.

Wow I was reading the mountain hiking adventure on the downhill and my heart was really racing. I am SO glad your friend was found safe and sound and the photos are absolutely amazing!
Does anyone else track VO2max and HRV on a regular basis? I find it interesting but I know some of the calculations are based on age so regardless of fitness since I am "old" I never really get excellent #s.3 -

@quilteryoyo that cavern has several races, one is a 5K all road, there’s a 5K/15K all trail and I think he’s working on a HM all trail. They are fun races. I don’t think I could hold my legs like that 90 seconds, I’ll have to try it.
@katharmonic what a story and as usual amazing pictures. Okay I would have punched him in the face LOL
@AlphaHowls thinking of your family and praying for your mom.

@quilteryoyo Took the challenge and clocked in at 4:02. And now my glutes are burning! I would be interested to see how I would do on a bench. Just lifting your legs is weird laying flat on the floor so I was also kinda lifting my shoulders.
@katharmonic That's so cool and such an accomplishment. I'm glad your friend was ok and hopefully he learned a valuable lesson.
@AlphaHowls Hugs to your family. That is such a tough situation.

Nov total: 23.6/70 miles
11/2: 2.2 miles
11/3: 3.1 miles
11/5: 2.1 miles
11/7: 14 miles
11/10: 2.2 miles
Did my first post-race run this morning. The soreness in my calves is mostly gone. My legs still felt a little heavy this morning but I expect will feel fine by this weekend. It was a little warmer today and very foggy. That super thick fog that just makes you damp.
I've done ok on my goals. I feel like I peaked for the year with running at the beginning of the year and I'm not sure if I will be back to that level of fitness by years end. But, I'm not in a bad position. Just prioritized things a bit differently this year. Aside from June, I ran consistently. I think not having races on the calendar affected me more this year. I will run some even without a race, but training is usually when my mileage ramps up, and without races I didn't really train.
Goals for 2021:
1. PR my HM - Done on 1/1.
2. Run more this summer than I did last. The heat in Houston really saps my energy, but I'm thinking baby steps. Increase each run by 0.5-1 mile. Slowly build up what I am capable of in the heat. Nope. 114 miles this summer (June-Aug) compared with 178 last summer. To be fair, I took all of June off. I'll have to try again next summer.
3. Climb a V5 - my current best is V4 and usually I'm a solid V3. - nope. I have not climbed that much this year compared to previous years. I'm enjoying it but not really grade chasing.
4. Climb a 5.12a/b - my current best is 5.11c/d and it wasn't pretty. The step up to 5.12 is HUGE. But, I heavily prefer sport climbing, so I'm hopeful. - nope but closer on this one than the bouldering goal.
5. Above all - stay healthy!! I've been lucky so far with no serious injuries. So, I need to do what I can to keep myself healthy. So far, so good. Some minor things, but overall been pretty healthy.

I wonder if your back is hurting because you’re not primarily using your glutes for this exercise? Maybe they’re not switching on and you’re using your back instead. My bum was on fire by the end of my session, followed by burning hamstrings. No pain in back at all, but that would kick in if I was also lifting my upper body (which is why I’m amazed that @polskagirl finds the full body version easier - it’s a real killer). It’ll be interesting to hear what your chiro says.

Thank you so much @Orphia , @kgirlhart @polskagirl01 @Tramboman @quilteryoyo @shanaber @Scott6255 and @martaindale! I am still kind of processing the experience to be honest, but it's a huge deal to me that I'm finally done after so much time and hard work.
@shanaber I forgot the pine marten pic! Can you see him here on the rock? Edited to add - can't get spoiler tags to work in this new format?

@alphahowls hugs to you and thinking about your mom. I hope the family visit is good for everyone.

Today I had to go down to main campus and get a random COVID test. I changed into running stuff before I went and intended to run on campus before it got dark. It wasn't that cold for running but I wasn't dressed warmly enough for the walk over to the testing place and got chilled. So I was really not wanting to run and was having a real hard time time myself into it. And then I walked right past the new (ish, last couple of years) multi-million dollar campus gym/health center that I have never been to and saw those treadmills staring right at me and I went in. It's very nice! And free for me.
As I was running the 3 miles, I was overlooking the rock wall which I have wanted to check out since it opened. It's small but again, free. I haven't been climbing for almost two years now and I thought no time like the present to just try it out again. I went down there and checked out some shoes and bless the students' hearts who work there for explaining how everything works to an old professor like myself who has never set foot in the gym before. I gave a few routes a try and found I was terribly out of practice and my grip really felt it. But I was able to do a little more than I expected after so long and I definitely got the bug to go back again. I want to go back to my regular climbing gym with more options but this (free) option will be nice to kind of warm up to it. I have a student who works there so I'll tell her I went and maybe she'll meet me there and help me out in getting back into it.
Definitely happy that I randomly dropped in and this will be a good indoor option this winter when I need it. It doesn't hurt that I have a fancy special parking pass so dropping in at the end of the day is pretty easy.

Great job on your HM @martaindale !
@katharmonic Congrats on completing all of the peaks!
Tonight’s training run again called for 20 min at 11:13-12:13 pace. I ran on the treadmill, and my Garmin acted really strange and tried to tell me I had a pace of 8:23, when in reality it was really closer to about 10:50. 🤷🏻♀️With warmup and cooldown, I completed 2.27 miles.
training run: 5/16
miles completed for month: 14.49

My goal is 50 miles for the month. I have been running but not posting lately.
The weather has been beautiful lately. I had hoped to run at least 3 times this week. It is supposed to rain tomorrow but I am going to run anyway. The last 2 half marathons I ran were both rainy...so I can run it....its mind over matter.
I am also going to try to.post pictures of my ugly race shirt. I ran in it on Sunday.

Sorry that I managed to triplicate my post. I dont know how to delete posts with this new format.
11/1.....6.25 miles run, 0.65 mike walk cooldown.

11/9....4.23 miles run, 0.85 walk
Total run...14.7
Walk ....8.27 for a total of 22.97 miles.
Was sick over the weekend but feeling better on Sunday.
My filly finished next to last in her championship race. The jockey reported that she was "worked up" before the race. She was leading in the race up till the home stretch and then she was passed by all the horses but one. They made a decision not to sell her this year.
@katharmonic Your photos are so beautiful. I have never heard of a pine marten. Thanks for posting a picture. I thought it was a bird like a purple marten.
@AlphaHowls I hope that your mom's physician can find something to help her. Can she be dialyzed?
@kgirlhart Congratulations on your success at your half marathon. I love how you dug in at the end to finish so strongly. Great race report.
@quilteryoyo I was thinking that you might help your back if you strengthen your abs. I'm glad that your chiropractor has been able to help you.
I hope everyone has a great week.

When you pop in here claiming your December 2021 mileage, what accomplishments will you have made?
PUT THE FUN BACK IN THE RUN!

@AlphaHowls I hope that your mom's physician can find something to help her. Can she be dialyzed?
Originally, when my mother's kidneys first started the downward spiral, we were told no. The specialist told her there really was not much anyone could do. My mother takes high doses of coumadin and a port/shunt would be difficult to manage/maintain. We will see specialist on 22nd and hope and pray for the best.

Anyone else having issues with the new format? Quoting doesn't seem to work well and if you find the 'Spoiler' let me me know. I am pretty tech savvy having worked in IT my entire career and this seems to be mostly a mess and lots of lost functionality with no information...
2 -
Took me more than 2,000 posts to learn the old format and now I'm lost...

On an announcement they said BBCode was no longer supported, so if you used to do the whole [ spoiler ] thing (or anything in brackets) that will no longer work. I don't see a menu option yet for spoiler. If it's HTML5 compatible you might be able to do < spoiler > .... Let's see ...
ETA nope, didn't work.
Only way to view the forums right now seems to be in a web browser, using the app is a no-go.
Agreed that more was lost than gained
