Foggy, mid 20s F, and no wind. Was old, tired and slow today; took me almost 3k just to loosen up.
@quilteryoyo Sorry to hear about the setback.

So so far behind!!! Going back to do some reading. My girl is coming home today for winter break, woohoo! Last weekend I volunteered at the Garmin RunningLane Cross Country Championships. Great racing as expected, the boys ran 5 ran under the National best time and the winning teams average time was 14:14 for a 5K!! Insane! Over 2200 runners, what an event!
Great links @shanaber
Happy Late Birthday @shanaber and @scott6255
@WhatMeRunning I didn’t see anything wrong with your comment. I think the group as a whole misses people who left the group for whatever reason they left or the expertise or experience they brought…or even just their funny stories.
Races:
Spooktacular 5K – Oct 30th
Battleship 12K in Mobile – Nov 14th

Beautiful pictures, @shanaber!
I’m sorry to hear about your back, @quilteryoyo. I hope it continues to ease off.2 -
@quilteryoyo sorry your back had a setback Hope it feels better soon!!
@Tramboman you are such a beast for running in 20 degree weather!
@shanaber awesome pictures!!
@skippygirlsmom Yay for Skip coming home for the holidays!!!
@rheddmobile glad you got out for some running, but please keep it easy until you can get in to see a doc!!5 -
9 Dec update.
44.81 miles to date out of 100. 49.5 left to go for Run the Year.
Able to continue my pace streak which is amazing to me as for a while I wasn't sure I could keep it under 11 consistently.
@quilteryo that is SO awful about your back... So sorry. It's amazing to me that the worst back injuries come from unusual stress vs some significant trauma. So evidently the angle you were sitting on the chair arm must have twisted those disks just right to cause a huge muscle spasm? Or do you have herniated disks? I know my injury was a compression years ago but each is different. For me Naproxen rx dosage was the only thing which helped with the pain. For Sciatica years later, massage therapy to move the nerves was eye opening. I honestly do not like chiropractic because it seems so "final" when they "crack" or move something. And not in a gentle way.3 -
@quilteryoyo I hope your back is feeling better soon.1
-
@shanaber What a lovely place to run!
@quilteryoyo Oh no! That sounds very painful. I hope your back gets its act together soon!
@skippygirlsmom That 5k time is so fast! I cannot even imaging being able to run that fast!
@Tramboman I second that you are a beast for getting out in the 20’s!!2 -
December Totals: 26.5/100 miles
12/3: 3.1 miles
12/4: 6 miles
12/6: 4.6 miles
12/7: 4.7 miles
12/8: 3 miles
12/9: 5.1 miles
We are on a temperature roller coaster with pretty wild swings every couple of days so this morning it was upper 60’s and 99% humidity. I had 4 miles as HM pace. My watch was being weird and some of the paces were definitely off. I am not great at pinpointing a pace but I can tell the difference between 10:30/mile and 9:30/mile. I was closer to 9:30 but my GPS was at 10:30. So, I couldn’t rely on the watch to make adjustments. Mostly I tried to keep consistent over the 4 miles, which I think I did. It was a harder effort than my usually runs but not as fast as my intervals speed.
I have noticed the GPS struggles when there is super heavy cloud cover, like there was this morning, and coupled with the woods and some power lines. A couple of those issues and it does ok but throw it all in there and it definitely has a hard time. I accidentally stopped my watch during my cool down and had to restart it and that map looks better but the clouds had started lifting by then. Oh well.
Some good news - my couch I ordered in April is finally getting delivered! We moved the couch from this house to the other one in August so we have been without a couch for 4+ months and I miss it soooo much. Even the most comfortable chair is no replacement for a couch you can really stretch out on. SO excited! I hope it makes it before Christmas but I’m not holding my breath.4 -
6 miles this evening. 75F on Dec.9! Unreal, since yesterday was barely 50F. Took it easy though, and at times, it felt easy. But HR is still about 20bpm higher than normal for an easy run.
December total: 15 miles.6 -
So sorry about your back @quilteryoyo
We've had a lovely snowstorm, but I've got too much going on and only had time to run around the block this morning. I really do want to get my mileage back up this month.
Also for anyone following my Polar Bear adventures... they had to break ice on the pool yesterday before we could get in the water. So the water was probably 0°C and the air was colder, around -4°. My son was having fun throwing big chunks of ice out into the middle where they'd hit the ice and shatter like glass. And of course people were posing in the water with pieces of ice. Very fun.7 -

I met a friend after work yesterday and we ran in a section of town that has a lot of houses decorated with Christmas lights. She loves to post pictures on FB so there was a lot of stopping and starting but it was a very nice evening with temps around 45F when we started and around 37F when we finished. It’s raining today and is supposed to continue tomorrow. I signed up for an 11-mile hike with a local state park for tomorrow but it is supposed to rain in the morning with thunder storms and wind gusts in the afternoon. I may just forfeit my $5 registration fee and skip it.
@shanaber – I hate being cold. Your body was probably wondering what was going on with the extreme (for you) weather change! Beautiful scenery though.
@quilteryoyo – So sorry about the back pain. Do you think it’s time to go to someone besides the chiro and get it checked out?
OMG @polskagirl01 Your idea of fun and mine are quite different! The snow though is beautiful!

rainy and warm this morning, like 70 degree humid warm. But tomorrow that will change and our temps are supposed to be in the 30's by Sun morning. Not really looking forward to a blue norther but it's Dec after all. I reckon I will put a blanket on my horse when I leave this evening even tho it's going to be 70 deg because it will likely be in the 40's with gusty winds making it feel colder by the morning.

@skippygirlsmom That is crazy fast. I know you are going to enjoy Skip being home for a while.
@martaindale I've been having some issues with my Garmin lately too. I thought my watch could be getting old and needing to be replaced. Maybe it's just the trees. I hope your couch gets there before Christmas.
@polskagirl01 That snow is so pretty. You and your son are beasts for doing the polar bear thing. I can't imagine.
Thanks everyone for your good wishes on my back. It's feeling much better today, but I'm still taking it easy. I talked to the chiropractor about it yesterday. He thinks there may be something else going on. We discussed it and decided if it happens again for no apparent reason that we'll get some imaging done to see if we can figure it out. He said it really shouldn't be doing that at this point.6 -
@Teresa502 I love to run at night this time of year and look at the houses decorated. I stop and take pictures too. Same with sunrise and sunsets.
Thanks @quilteryoyo I was a crabby patty last night, I told her this morning I'm so used to being alone and coming home to the quiet after the chaos that is work. I got home she put up the tree (not the way I would have but I just said it looks great), she decorated outside with lights so we are all Christmas. The problem was at 7:30 she decided she didn't want her bed anymore she wanted to swap with the one in the guest room. You know eventually that would include me doing something. I woke up during the night to all the furniture in the hallway and her asleep on the couch. ha ha. I told her it'll take a few days before I will get used to her being home, but I was glad she was.

Haven’t been on here very much but I thought you might want to know that today I walked a little over 7 miles. About 1 mile into the walk I tried to run. I ran a little under a mile with no pain but I didn’t want to push it any further. The piriformis is still a little tight when I am stretching but getting better. All week I have walked 5 or more miles with hardly any pain. So tomorrow I am going to try a little run again to see how I do. I rested it a lot so I think that made a difference. I’ve started a couple Fitbit challenges to get me more competitive.(I like the challenges) We will see next month what’s in store for me.10
-
On Wednesday ran 5k on trails, after a walk my heart seemed fine so ran another mile. Still hanging out trying not to die until the 22nd!
My husband got me a weight bar for Christmas since the one I’ve been using at home since Covid was a cheap hollow bar that maxed out about 180 lbs and has been sagging more and more alarmingly with repeated use. This one is rated up to 1500 lbs, which considering it’s a 5’ short bar with only 9” loadable area per side, I have no clue how you would get 1500 on it! It’s a groovy bar, got it at half off on Amazon because the packaging was damaged! Using all my willpower not to actually use it until Christmas but I had to get it out and test it yesterday when it arrived. With my current brand of weights I could theoretically get 500 lbs on it, more than I will ever need. The knurling is like a chain saw on my hands though, I need to buy some silicone wrap tape for it. Why is knurling made so rough?
Not running today since it was supposed to be storms, but they have pushed the storms back until tonight so I could have run after all. It’s 80 degrees out! Record high for this date. Under a tornado watch now, cold front coming through.4 -
@SummerSkier I can’t remember where you are, are you under the same tornado watch we have here in Memphis? Stay safe!1
-
@rheddmobile I love checking for daged box stuff on amazon. We've gotten great deals on new items because a box is dented.0

rheddmobile wrote: »@SummerSkier I can’t remember where you are, are you under the same tornado watch we have here in Memphis? Stay safe!
@rheddmobile no I am in central Tx and no Tornado watch but that storm is going to come thru with very high winds over night so tomorrow instead of shorts and tee it will be a few more layers. LOL. Esp with the arctic wind from the north gusting over 20 mph. Stay safe and glad to hear your heart is behaving for you......

@quilteryoyo so sorry about the setback with your back! I'm glad it was better today. I feel for you, back pain can be so awful and debilitating.
@julieannegannon good for you! Sounds like you are doing well and being smart about it. You'll get there!
Beautiful pics @shanaber and @polskagirl01
@skippygirlsmom it's a mixed blessing having her home, huh LOL, I can just imagine the impulse decision about the bed and the furniture chaos.
Sorry, I'm behind on everybody's updates but trying to catch up.

I don't know for sure the last time I posted. Wednesday I ran in the snow in the dark on the track by my work, which was getting very slippery. But I was pressed for time and didn't want to run the hills. I didn't bring the right kind of clothes or I would have run at the gym instead. But I got it done and it was really kind of peaceful and nice out there. Thursday was just a short treadmill warmup before strength training. And today was warmer and nicer and I got a run done just before dark.5 -
Ran parkrun today in my fastest time this year by 2 minutes. I'm totally stoked! Probably ran three quarters of the 5 k.
In other news, my back decided to go out in sympathy with @quilteryoyo
It happened just after the 1 km mark, going up a hill. It's quite painful at times, but keeping active helps, even though there is a stronger-than-dull pain when I'm moving around. I think it's time for another x-ray. I had mild degradation(?) of the disc about 8 years ago.7 -
@quilteryoyo - backs can be so finicky and frustrating! I hope you can get it figured out and agree that maybe it is time to see an ortho and get the imaging done to make sure there isn't something else going on that needs a more focused attention.
@polskagirl01 - love the snow picture! I can't even imagine wanting to get in that icy water!
@Teresa502 - Love the picture! You look so cute! I also like to take pictures when I see a pretty view or sunset or ??
@julieannegannon - Congratulations on getting in a really long walk with a little running mixed in! You have done a great job of taking it slow and letting yourself heal!
@skippygirlsmom - had to laugh about the furniture! My daughter told me the last time she was home that I needed to get rid of her bed when we did the house work and moved everything out. She said it was too small and uncomfortable and she would rather sleep in the guest room. So now I am making her old room into my workout room 😁
@Orphia - congratulations on a great park run!! I hope your back is ok!
I finally got out for a run this morning. I got in my birthday miles (6.6) a few days late but I got it done! It was cool out and it made me want to run fast. It felt great! I am hoping to get out for a shorter run tomorrow. We have rain heading our way most of next week though. It is a good thing as we are so very dry but it will make running interesting.7 -
01/12 - 3.1 miles - 8:42 min/mi - 276 feet - Road4.1 mile trail run this morning. Got soaked as it was heavy drizzle, but not cold. There's something refreshing about running in the rain.

10/12 - 4.5 miles - 9:16 min/mi - 253 feet - Road/Trail

Oh no @Orphia I hope your back is ok. Great job at Parkrun!!!
I wanted to get about 30k total this week, with a run of at least 11k since I'm signed up for a forest/trail(?) run on Saturday at that distance. So I slept in, ate breakfast, then went out for 12 km. It felt pretty hard, but I guess that's not unusual with what I'm coming back from. About half was on clear sidewalks and half on snow, so I had to pay attention, but it wasn't slippery.
Only now my swans are confusing me. Their ponds were mostly frozen, but I saw them out digging around eating something in a field... and the 2 younger ones looked darker, like they're still grey. So what swans did I see the other day? I have no idea. I think some swans here migrate for the winter, and some stay, so it's possible the others were just passing through. Or maybe my eyes were playing tricks on me today. They were pretty far away. 🤷♀️8 -

Cloudy and mid 50s F today after thunderstorms last night. Saw a couple of worms and a green heron.
On an unrelated side note, my daughter graduates today Cum Laude from Middle Tennessee State University. I am so proud of her for all that she has accomplished.

@Tramboman congratulations to you and your daughter!! What is she going to study or do for a career?
@Orphia it seems like it's just one thing after another. 2 steps forward and all that. Hope your back was just a few days out and not chronic.
@shanaber glad you got your 6.6 in to celebrate your birthday. There certainly are not a lot of women half your age or less who can do half that!
Scott, I think that is very wise of you to keep your runs less strenuous since your heart rate is still elevated. 20 seems like a very lot tho for an injury. I know mine was too high for RHR for weeks after I had a flu virus one time, but usually injuries do not cause mine to fluctuate so high,
45.12 miles Dec to date out of 100 planned. or less. 39.17 left for run the year. Streak of miles with a 9 in the pace up to 104 now. Does not sound like much but for a few months there I was lucky to keep them in the 10's range. I guess we can get faster with age if we out our minds to it and avoid injury. I did decide today to drop another few pounds (slowly) in order to help with my joints and my pace. The things we runners do...

It has been raining and gross here for several days, but last night I went out for a run when I got home before it got too dark. It was soooo foggy though. The training run was only 20 minutes at half marathon goal pace, but it was warm and humid, so I looked like I had taken a shower when I finished.
Today, I went to my body pump class and then had speed repeats, so I did those on the indoor track at the gym. 12x 20sec at 150-200spm/45 sec recovery. All of my repeats were between 175-185spm.

I met a friend at 6:30 this morning so that we could beat the winds and rain. She rain with me for the first six and then I did another 4 by myself. It was a balmy 48F. Hard to complain about the weather when so many lives have been lost and destroyed by these storms. Hope that you and your area escaped the worst of it @rheddmobile.
Great job on your park run @Orphia but sorry about the back issues.
Congratulations to your daughter @Tramboman and to you for raising such a smart cookie!

I woke up to pouring rain and wind, and a flurry of texts from people bailing out on meeting up to run. I was not unhappy about that. It stopped raining and a few of us met up at 10 to do at least a shorter run. It was still pretty windy but actually quite warm in the 50s. I was happy to get something done and got a little bonus sleeping in and lounging with coffee time.
I was really supposed to do a 5k race tonight but I also bailed on that because it is supposed to be rainy and windy again, and I didn't want to take the time to go out of town when it's been a really busy week and I have a lot to do and just need some time at home.4
