I waited until lunch time to run today when the temp was 28F instead of the 13F that it was this morning. Sun was shining and I overdressed in a thick long-sleeved shirt with a jacket over that. I shed my gloves after the first couple of miles and unzipped my jacket and was ok.
Yay for Skip @skippygirlsmom! So glad her professor is supportive. Sorry about your ankle. I hope a rest day is all it needs. You have been running pretty strong on it.
I’m so excited for your HM @martaindale – you have been training so faithfully! @Scott6255 – you could totally run a HM this weekend! Go, go, go!

Congratulations to your girl @skippygirlsmom - that’s great news! Hope the ankle is ok soon.
@martaindale good luck on the half - I’m sure it will be great.
@Tramboman - just brrr!! I keep having to look up temperature conversions because we are strictly Celsius over here. And every time I do i realise just how cold it is for some of you guys!
Chipped away a little more of the goal this morning. Now over two thirds of the way to goal, so maybe thinking about stretching myself to double it.

Met some girls from running club this evening for a run. They had worked out a hilly loop (about a mile long) and we set out to do it 4 times. But after the 3rd time, one girl looks at her watch and says "we could probably fit in 5" since her goal was 45 minutes. So 5 it was. I like how each one was progressively faster, although I might not have liked it while we were doing that last loop. Good workout.
@Scott6255 I hear you on feeling that pull to go back to marathons. I hope you can get back to running the distances you want very soon!8 -
@Tramboman Thanks for the ice beard picture. That looks soooooo soooooo cold.
Nice running @martaindale . Glad the weather is looking great for your races this weekend.
@skippygirlsmom I'm so sorry your ankle is giving you trouble. That is so weird. I hope it has gotten better today. If not, you may want to go have it checked out. Congratulations to Skip! That is awesome!
Nice running @Teresa502 ! Don't blame you for waiting until it warmed up.
You are doing great @Faebert !
Hahaha @polskagirl01 about the last lap. But, you did great!
I played doubles tennis this morning. The group was really chatty, so I think we talked more than we played, but I did still burn some calories and had a good time. I came home and walked a mile on the treadmill and did my back exercises. As I was typing that, I realized that today is the end of my original streak I started for myself. Only one day that I didn't at least walk a mile the past 365 days...which means today is the anniversary of the day I came home from the hospital. I think I am going to keep it up, at least until I get to the day that I had the stomach flu last year so it will truly be a year streak. Having that goal did "motivate" me to walk or run on days that I really didn't want to. I think it was good for me.8 -
8 miles this evening. Felt pretty good after the first mile.

January Goal: 100 Miles
1/1: 10.02 miles
1/4: 5.31 miles

1/6: 5.18 miles
1/9: 10.01 miles
1/11: 5.10 miles
40.88/100 miles completed for January
It was cold this morning. 27°F feels like 21°F. I didn't want to get out of bed, and I didn't want to go outside. But I did and I was glad. I was kind of cold the whole run, but I ran pretty fast for me at 9:53 average pace for 5 miles.
Congratulations on your streak @quilteryoyo!
@skippygirlsmom That is so awesome! Way to go Skip! I hope your ankle is better soon.
@Tramboman Nice ice beard!
@martaindale I hope the weather cooperates this weekend!

@Tramboman I love a good ice beard!
@martaindale Good luck on your half!
We got out to Chuckalissa today and did trails. I say “did” trails because while we did jog the flats we mostly hiked the loop. I have no idea how people run it when it’s truly muddy. It’s been dry for a couple days and was muddy under a thick coating of leaves today and that was okay if you were careful, but there was evidence a single runner had been down the trail some days before us and left tragic skid marks which told the story of his desperate scramble - we kept laughing as we went over gouges in the mud where this guy had clearly slid three feet or more on one foot! It’s really apparent that not many people run there, I haven’t run it in over a month and picked up “local legend” status on Strava based on running it twice in 90 days.
Anyway the weather was beautiful. Blue skies and about 50. The uphills are steep enough that just walking them puts my heart rate into the same zone as a tempo run.
I have a chest x ray on Thursday and a calcium score on Friday so running schedule this week is going to be tricky. Nothing particularly abnormal with my heart itself on my echo but they did see a pleural effusion thus the x ray. Chest x ray at the ER was supposedly clear but they told me a lot of things which turned out not to be true at that ER visit - I wish I could have a real doctor look at the images and tell me if the effusion was there then. Anyway a pleural effusion can be caused by a lot of things, varying from trivial to deadly, so…6 -
@Tramboman thank you for your post. You're an inspiration2
-
@tramboman great ice beard!
@quilteryoyo awesome job on your streak! Congratulations!
@rheddmobile best wishes on your tests and I hope you get some good quality answers and solutions.
Kids are complaining of belly-aches so they're staying home. So much for that coffee date I was hoping for, but I am going for a bike ride. I haven't historically done much cycling in winter, or for the past year either, for that matter, but during winter it's been mainly due to cold and road conditions. Except for the ice slick on half of our road (from a farm up the hill), everything looks clear. And I haven't felt as affected by cold lately, so I'm curious about how it will go.5 -
Great pace @kgirlhart ! Wanting to get back to where it is warm will do that for you.
@rheddmobile Glad you were able to get out and "do" the trail and have a good laugh at the skid marks. I hope you get good news from all of your tests.
@polskagirl01 I hope the kids feel better and that you have a nice bike ride. It's interesting that you feel like you aren't as affected by the cold as you used to be. I am the opposite. Seems like I get cold when it's in the 60's.2 -
"Keepin' it sleasy since 1952"
1-1 7k sleasy
1-2 7k sleasy
1-3 rest

1-11 7k slow
1-12 7k sleasy (but a lot closer to easy than slow)

January Goal: 140k
Mostly sunny, upper 20s F, and a wind from the southwest. If it weren't for the wind, would have been much nicer. Sun burned off most of the snow from yesterday; there were only a couple of icy spots that required dodging.6 -

I have a similar thing going on... I seem to be at that 'wonderful' point in a woman's life when she gets hot flashes and night sweats and things and this winter I seem to be the only person not complaining they're cold. When I lost the weight I started feeling the cold a lot more, and I've always adored my duvet and really hot showers in the winter... can't tolerate either of those this year!4 -
skippygirlsmom wrote: »if you look at the one picture of her "costume" she had on leggings and a frozen tank top, not really my idea of costume. But dang she was moving!!
@skippygirlsmom Such an awesome opportunity for Skip! I hope your ankle feels better soon. So weird for it hurt like that out of nowhere.
@polskagirl01 Your running group sounds great, and such a good source of motivation! My cold tolerance has also improved a lot since I started running. But, I tolerate heat worse on the flip side. Can't have it both ways I guess. My husband has gotten very cold intolerant as he ages, and is frequently found under a blanket even in the house with the heater on 68F. It's borderline ridiculous.
@rheddmobile Sending good vibes your way for your upcoming tests. I hope you can get some answers.2 -
Had a whole post typed out and clicked on Save Draft and Poof it is gone... Here goes again with a shorter version.
@skippygirlsmom - That is So exciting for Skip!! Is she wanting to do that as a career? I am sure ESPN will have a spot for her when she finishes college! Hope your ankle feels better and it is just cranky from the football game. Have to say while I have no affinity for either team I was happy to see Georgia do well since it has been so long and besides, their coach was trained by Alabama's. Nick Sabin really is a class act!
@rheddmobile - it must have been so funny to track the other runners sliding skid marks. Hopefully they got down the trail and home ok. Hope you don't have to wait too long after your tests to get the results and some answers from the doctors. I am still waiting on mine.
@Tramboman - great ice beard but BRRR so cold! 🥶
On being cold vs being hot... I am on the other side of the hot flashes and night sweats mostly and I get so cold now and it has been worse lately. My doctor writes it off to having lost weight but that was a while ago so who knows. Probably just part of getting older. However that doesn't work for my husband who is a bit older than me (8 years) and he rarely gets cold, wears shorts all the time and turns the heat up for me, but wants to have all the windows open. I go around and close everything in the rooms he is not in and then he opens them again 😂😂
We had a couple of hot (80F) and very windy days and I just didn't feel any motivation to go out even for a walk. Today is cooler and the wind is gone so I will be heading out in a bit!

Really great photos! I think if it was cold enough to get an ice beard I might have to skip the day. Been trying to keep up with our RTW challenge and am inputting runs and intentional walk distances. I thought we had another high mileage person aside from @AlphaHowls but I am not seeing them in the chart now. I have been taking more rest days which was part of my intention this year but I really DO Not like it. Maybe my heart and body like it tho?

@martaindale you’ll do great this weekend, weather sounds good. Ah I didn’t see the cape in the picture, well that’s gotta cause some drag right?! I started to follow her too.
So whatever made my ankle angry the other night went away…probably Bama losing to GA LOL
@Teresa502 the weather has been a killer hasn’t it. You sound like me…hat off, gloves off, jacket opened ha ha
Thanks for the kind words on Skip, I appreciate you all letting me brag on her. @shanaber yes that is what she wants to do. She would love to cover women in particular in sports. Fingers crossed on ESPN. I was actually ok with GA winning, they just played better and deserved to win. We love our Nick Saban here for sure. I’m always amazed when people say they hate them or him. Besides a great coach, he’s honestly a great man, all the players under him talk about how he instills values in them far past football. The downside to them losing is that he and his wife foot the bill for a low income house to be built when they win a championship.
@polskagirl01 great hill workout – good luck on the bike ride, hope the kids are feeling better soon
@quilteryoyo that’s a great streak good for you! How has your back been feeling?
@kgirlhart we seem to have around the same temp a lot. Nice job out in the cold. I find if I just make myself go I’m usually glad I did.
@Tramboman great beard.
@rheddmobile good luck on the tests this week. Do they plan to do anything for the pleural effusion or just tell you about it?

Ran on the treadmill again this morning. Really looking forward to lighter mornings so I can be back outside again. Walking the kids to school and then on to work this week there have been some stunning sunrises. Would have been a treat to run in those.
