@martaindale Sunday sounds like a great weather day. So glad you won’t have those winds, just no.
@Faebert I always take pictures of the pretty sunrises, I call them God’s reward for running early.
@eleanorhawkins my big concern would be getting too sweaty vs being a little colder. Skip has a coat similar to what @rheddmobile talked about and loves it. She can put it in her pack no problem and it is enough to cut any wind. My obvious answer is make sure you have moisture wicking underneath to keep the sweat off you. I’m a big fan of things that zip, I call zipped up heat and unzipped air conditioning. This way if I feel to start warm I can unzip and get some air without actually having to pull something off. I personally am not a sleeves girl they tend to annoy me for some reason, maybe I haven’t found the right pair. I agree with @Scott6255 the booze sound like a plan.

@skippygirlsmom yeah... my main issue is that the windbreaker/jacket thing I have with a zipper is paper-thin. It's perfect for evening runs here, but I'm not convinced it will be warm enough for early morning up a mountain. But the thicker long-sleeved tops and sweatshirt I have, which I know would keep me warm enough, would be a pain in the *kitten* if I needed to take them off as it would involve unstrapping and removing my entire pack (and bib) and then putting it all back on again.
The really funny thing about all this is that a few months ago I was saying (loudly) how great it was going to be to race without being way too hot and the sun trying to kill me!!

@eleanorhawkins gotta watch what you wish for I would hate to try to pull off something too.1

weather stalking update: it's looking cold...
At 8am tomorrow (5k start time) 50F with 22mph winds and a feels like of 44F. Not terrible temp wise but will actually be getting colder during the run. While I am not "racing" this one, I am running it. I'm just going to try not to get to the start too early to minimize waiting around time. And I am dressing a bit warmer than I usually would at 50F because I think those winds will feel brutally cold. It may be a challenge to keep this one slow.
At 7am Sunday (HM start time) 36F with 14 mph winds and a feels like of 28F. I am expecting it to still be hovering around 40F with a feels like of 30-32F at finish. Once moving it will be great but the corrals will be a challenge. I am packing a cheap fleece blanket and a couple of old sweaters to wear in the corrals that I can throw to the side at the start or shortly after. I also threw some hot hands in my bag to tuck into my gloves.
I was going to wear a running hat and a thinner ear cover but I may switch to a thicker ear cover and carry sunglasses. The glasses should help cut the wind a bit too. And my mask, which I was planning on wearing for the corrals, the starts, finishes, and maybe the entire 5k, will double as a face warmer! I am fighting the urge to pack warmer leggings and more top layers because I know I will regret it for a race this long.6 -

I met a couple of friends in town at 5 am this morning for 5 miles. It was not as cold as predicted. The outerlayer I had layed out last night was too heavy but luckily I had a lighter shirt in the car that I could use instead.
@martaindale – I love being able to wear “throw-aways” in the corrals at the bigger races! Most of them collect the clothing and donate it a charity. Good luck this weekend @martaindale and @eleanorhawkins!
4 -
@Teresa502 Houston donates the throwaways and I love that they do that! You can leave stuff at the start or any aid station and they get collected throughout the race.
@eleanorhawkins Good luck this weekend. May you choose wisely on clothing options!2 -
@martaindale and @eleanorhawkins your weather stalking and gear doubting are getting me excited about races I'm not even doing! I guess it's part of the fun.
@eleanorhawkins I like that you're the only girl brave enough to stick around. You can definitely handle that mountain. As for the cold, another thought is, how long are you actually going to be in the colder segment? Maybe it's not worth stressing about, beyond what fits comfortably in your pack. The calf sleeves might not even be recognizable as not-arm-sleeves if they fit, but that price isn't bad if you want to walk either.
I got myself out the door for my run. Uneventful 9.5km. The snow melted and now that charming path I found not long ago by the power plant looks like a dump. It was awful, trash everywhere. And a sad useless sign stands bravely at the beginning saying "mine property, no dumping". Ugggh.
But I'm putting together my training plan. I printed out 2 of Hal's plans ("Marathon 3", "Marathon Advanced1") and one mountain-marathon plan that I mostly rejected because it's time based and I'm slow, meaning I'd get less mileage than they probably intended, but it does have a good progression of hill workouts that may be helpful. So it's going to be a combo of 4 days running (1 long, 1 hill/speed, 1-2 medium), 1-2 cross training days and 1-2 rest days per week, with a cutback week every 3rd week (or every other week, once long run reaches 20 miles). And I'm dividing it into stages so I can start now and repeat a few weeks in a stage if I'm not feeling ready to bump up yet. The big race is in August, but that doesn't mean I won't do other things (big or small?) before then.6 -
@martaindale I am in awe of your attitude to those temperatures. Our forecast for Sunday is around 5C (41F I think?) at the start and I'm making all this fuss lol.
I went and bought the sleeves. Also ended up picking up a very nice pair of capri-length tights that I must now not allow myself to wear to the race because nothing new. Except sleeves, d'oh. But if those are a problem they can come off, the tights can't!
The races that collect cast off layers for charity are great!
@polskagirl01 a lot of what I'm stressing about is the fact that it's all unknown. Evil coach said it would get cold from km 9 to km 18, which according to the profile is coming down the back of the mountain but I have no way of knowing what the trail will be like and how much of it I will be able to run without risking breaking my neck. Last time I happily proclaimed I would be able to catch up on a downhill stretch that stretch turned out to be known as 'break-a-leg hill'. What I do know is we go up a trail called 'Convicts'. Nobody seems to know where that name comes from, but the very popular local trail marathon apparently goes down it and it's another one of those names that you hear people say in a respectful tone.
Anyway, cold. I'm going to go with sleeves under windbreaker but rather than begging a ride I'll take my car with warmer stuff so I can panic-grab a jacket if it's colder than I expect it to be when I get to the start.
Now I'm getting excited about your training plan in creation and want to do it with you even though I don't have any crazy plans after this weekend hahaha. I have a local rural HM at the end of February (boring, only one hill and all but about 15 metres at the bottom are great footing) and that's it. Keep looking at races and forcing myself to wait a while.3 -
@eleanorhawkins haha on the convicts, my shorter race in February is also named after a bandit. Must be a mountain thing, only tough people survive. Since you're also a tough person, you'll survive too3

The Run The Year folks are awesome. My package arrived today, and the mailwoman demanded 5€ for customs fees, which never happened before. I emailed to let them know so they can warn other people in Spain when they place orders, assuming it was just a new thing, and Tim replied almost instantly that he didn't know what happened but it shouldn't have and refunded me 6$!

Two more miles on the treadmill in the dark early hours this morning. Nothing exciting to report but I’m less than a mile to goal now. Will definitely get back outside again this weekend.
@eleanorhawkins and @martaindale - good luck! I’ll be thinking of you both this weekend x

@eleanorhawkins that was great of them. Adam Goucher (Olympic runner) is one of the folks who is in charge of run the year. I ordered a shirt and got it yesterday. Love the color.1

Well, I made it to all my cardio tests, now just gotta wait to hear back. I did get a run in yesterday because the imaging center is right next to a nice trail. I was stressed and mad and ran 5k without even trying to keep my heart in range, heart rate was a little higher than usual (but then it’s been a whole month now since I really ran as opposed to jogging) but didn’t flip out on me. I really hope we can find a solution because it felt so good to run out the mad. I don’t want to limit myself to only running easy!
My GPS is doing a thing again and gave me all new Strava personal bests because it was calling so short. So now I have to figure out how to reset it so it ignores that run and get my old PBs back, if that’s even possible.
So, why was I mad yesterday? Right now our county is at peak Omicron and I haven’t been going anywhere. Had to go to all these tests with face to face interaction with medical people, waiting rooms, etc which was already stressing me out. But at least the imaging center is being careful, right? I mean, their appointment confirmation email, plus a lady who phones to confirm, instructs you to wear a mask at all times and reschedule if you have any Covid symptoms. So I get there and sitting right next to the check in desk is a dude with a nice chesty cough and wheeze, with his mask pulled down to cough! And I know it’s infectious and not COPD or something because his wife has parked herself next to him (btw sign in lobby says no family only patients) and has the same thing! Literally five feet from the check in, in the closest chairs, in an otherwise empty waiting room the size of an airport. I say to the check in girl, Hey, that guy right there is not wearing his mask! She was reading a magazine in her own little world, does a double take. Guy gets embarrassed and puts mask back on, she says, Well he’s putting it back on now. I say, Well I don’t see what earthly good that’s going to do at this point after coughing on everything and filling up the air with germs!
So, hoping my KN95 is good enough to protect me from doofus who misunderstands the whole purpose of masks.8 -
Good luck on your races this weekend @martaindale, @eleanorhawkins and @marisap2010! Hope the weather is good and your gear choices work well for you. Excited for you all.

I am back from DC. I managed to run on the treadmill 3.0 miles pretty much exactly (obviously quitting the second it rolled over 3) on Monday before I left, and on Tuesday and Wednesday at the hotel gym. I considered running outside on Wednesday as the temps were better but I was overwhelmed between trying to figure out a place to run and not get lost and dressing for the weather. So I just went back to the gym so I didn't have to think. I listened to "Ask Me Another" the NPR show podcast, which I haven't listened to in a really long time and I forgot how funny it is. That helped me get through the boring treadmill run and I actually laughed out loud a few times. The other people in the gym probably thought I was insane. There were a few people there each time I went which kind of surprised me but the conference going on the hotel was a navy conference and I guess they are a more fit group than your usual business/academic conference crowd.
I traveled home yesterday, so no run, and then met a friend to run today. It was a little icy on the roads at 8 am but it wasn't terribly windy so it felt ok. Temps started dropping during the day though and we are headed for negative temps (F) overnight and tomorrow morning. My running friends and I decided to hold off on the long run until Sunday, which only looks marginally better. And then it is supposed to start snowing Sunday night into Monday. I'm not at all pleased with this forecast and I just want to hibernate until it's a little less aggressively wintry out.

Hope it all goes well, ladies x2 -
Got outside again this morning for my run. Sadly not the same beautiful sunny weather as Thursday. Thick fog, wet and slippy and a fair amount of pollution in the air. Slowed me down a bit but I did another 5km so pleased with that.

@marisap2010 ,@martaindale and @eleanorhawkins Good luck with your races and clothing. I would just dress warmly and not worry about getting hot...I so much prefer sweating to being cold. LOL
Great run @Teresa502 .
Sounds like a good play @polskagirl01 !
@rheddmobile I hope you hear back from your tests soon and you get good news. Sorry about the doofus. There are lots of those out there. I hope you don't get whatever they had.
@katharmonic You did great with your running while in DC.
@Faebert Glad you were able to get out for a run, even if the conditions weren't ideal.
Nice running @Tramboman !2
