82 year old widowed MIL who "goes nowhere" (her words not mine as I know she is wrong) is positive as of 2 hours ago
In addition, Anti-Vax SIL in Mass now has COVID for the second time.8 -

@SuzySunshine99 I ordered Tuesday. Also curious about turn around time. Do you have to go to the wake? Can you send a really, really nice heartfelt letter? And maybe some food or something?
I don't HAVE to go...but, my best friend's father died, and I want to support my friend. It's a really tough situation, and I hate that this virus has forced us to make decisions like this. But, despite my fears, I decided that I will go, even if briefly.
Just sharing my own recent experience with a wake and funeral and not making any judgments about your thought process:
My partner's aunt died and he insisted I NOT go with him. He wore a KN95 mask to the wake and funeral. He did not go to the luncheon afterwards. This was 9 days ago so seems like he did not catch it.
The family set up a private viewing for his other aunt, the sister of the deceased. (She's the one who was yelling at my partner for not wearing a mask while being 20 feet away from her...out doors.) She was not at the funeral. This amazed me, as she is a super devout Catholic who never missed and Sunday prior to COVID and did things like sponsored and attended memorial masses.
I like to say our aunts are on the opposite ends of the vax spectrum. MY aunt gave people RFK Jr's Anti Fauci book for Christmas >.<5 -

My workplace mandates isolation for five days, complete masking for five when reporting to work; no negative test required. I hope my kids (also vaxxed, one boosted) can manage to avoid this.
Nobody is going to avoid Omicron unless they literally do absolutely nothing and have no contact with anyone. My whole family had it earlier this month and I'm still in quarantine for work due to their very strict protocols. We're all vaxed and my wife and I are boosted. We have indoor mask mandates here and always comply and we all still got it.
I thought that too but somehow managed to avoid getting it when my family had it. I wish I did test positive, at this point I just want to get it over with. Given my extensive exposures I am assuming that I am immune due to either previous exposure or vaccine response. I just wish I had that confirmation of being post infection so I can get on with normal life and go on a freaking vacation without worrying about getting stuck there with a positive test.
That's the same feeling I have quite often. If it's inevitable, just come and get me now. Five days' hibernation wouldn't be entirely unwelcome with our current cold snap.4 -
My partner tried to order our "free" test kits but because we use a UPS Store for our mail he got caught up in the "somebody already ordered from that address" mess. I hope they fix it soon. I read somewhere that if you put your Suite/Apt/Box number on the first line it will help though probably as soon as someone else does it with the same number it'll fail again.
I've already resigned myself to the fact that I'm probably going to get Covid though I'm still hoping to avoid it with reasonable (but not excessive) precautions.4 -

So few more conversations since I first learned of my MIL.
Though she tested positive today, she was starting to feel sick Monday night. My reading just now says contagious 1 - 2 days prior to symptoms and DH left saturday morning, 2.5 days before her symptoms. From internet, omicron is supposed to show about 3 days after exposure. My other SIL (not the one with 2nd round covid) says that in her experience as director of a school, they are seeing symptoms show right on schedule 5 days after a known exposure. This evening my husband is at 5.5 from leaving his mother and slightly more than 5 days from his flight home. While he could be asymptomatic, I'll continue to monitor me as I am around people needing protecting. I have done tests two days ago (due to seeing my parents) and then again this evening as I have to drive my mother in the morning. So far, both tests were negative.
As for the free tests, when I logged on (Jan 18) it stated that shipping begins at the end of January. But I am curious how long will it take to distribute that number of shipments? Will people be still receiving theirs in April or longer? While the free tests are nice, I think they would have been a greater value to the community if distributed in December or before. But of course, hindsight is 20/20. Lastly, I wonder about receiving mine. I leave my current address on Feb 4. Will they forward shipped kits, or not?4 -

Yes, I found it easy and took only a minute. It says they ship late January, which is basically now (how did it already become LATE January?!).5 -
They said on TV that you could get at-home tests at your local pharmacy and insurance would reimburse you. The next day I got an email from my insurance company saying that that didn't apply to Medicare people. They won't reimburse us. I'm not sure what happens if we try to get the tests from the government website.

The government site does not ask for insurance information. Literally just your name and address. Insurance is not a factor...anyone with a residential mailing address can get them.6 -

Hmmm, must be my sister got hers mailed from a different source. I know she said she's ordered from 2 places. I'll have to check now. She's been giving them to people she knows that don't have enough of them and keeping 2 for herself.
That's good to know though. Thanks!1 -

If your sister received them already, and ordered from two places, then she didn't get them from the free government site that just went online this weekend. Those have not shipped yet, AFAIK.2 -
Any thoughts/input from you smart people on a new topic that I am hearing about. That topic is the possibility of developing "fatigue" from booster shots. This appears to relate to more than 4 shots (2 standard plus two boosters), so we are not there yet. If true, the importance of this is that we would need to plan/develop other/additional strategies for down that road that do not continue to require more vaccinations. Curious what discussion is going on in the scientific community.0

T Cell "fatigue" or the phenomenon of multiple vaccinations and this issue is something the media picked up and SURPRISE - got wrong.
According to TWiV, that was something that was an issue with (I think) HIV.
Don't even go down that road. That narrative is faulty in regards to SARS-Cov2. I think it was last week's TWiV that just discussed this.

The WHO says that boosting is making things worse overall. This article was last month...

Yes, it would be best case scenario to vaccinate the whole world.
That's a political/global stance, not an individual health/immunity stance.
There will always be variants and the vaccines are not the only variable, viruses change. That's what they do. The question was whether multiple vaccinations for this virus would cause broader individual immunity problems via the mechanism of T Cell, "fatigue," as recently reported (wrongly) in the media.

Maybe more more and build endurance so you don't notice "fatigue"?0 -
Not sure why they are even giving 4th shot boosters here. A prominent doctor here said that he has yet to admit a triple vaxx'd person into the ICU.
But it's like they need to do SOMETHING so lets roll out 4th shots - with absolutely no evidence that we even need them.6 -

I think Quebec is doing this - but they aren't calling it a "mandate" but rather a health surtax for those who refuse the vaccine.4 -

As a health care provider, I love it! I’m tired and so is everyone else I work with of the unvaccinated clogging up our hospital rooms leaving no room for others with other health conditions.19 -

Sorry, I was not clear and I see your interpretation. The "fatigue" they are referring to is T-cell fatigue that (if correct) would ultimately weaken instead of helping our immune response to COVID. Or at least, that is how I understand it.2 -

Sounds reasonable to me.
I know US health system is different - but in countries like Canada, Australia, UK etc which have universal health care, funded by tax payers, then I think it reasonable that people who knowingly make a choice that is likely to lead to poorer health outcome ,and thus cost the tax payers more - they should pay more tax to off set this.
Seems similar to tax on cigarettes and alcohol - you can choose them ( and I drink alcohol myself so not a high horse thing here) but the tax on them goes some way to offsetting the higher tax payer cost of outcomes of your choice.
and of course people can get lung cancer even if they don't smoke and hospitalised with Covid even if they are vaccinated - but likelihood is FAR less and nobody suggests penalising you for outcomes beyond your control.
Smoking and non vaccinating is within your control

So, Meatloaf died of Covid. News is saying he was an anti-vaxxer. I’m sad now.1

If we don't have health insurance, we have to pay at tax time. Good idea to let people choose to be vaxxed or not BUT with a cost just like that!! Maybe more would choose to be vaxxed. I know a couple people who do not have health insurance and say it's cheaper just to pay the money come tax time. Maybe it wouldn't be so acceptable if non-vaccinated ones were charged a tax. DH said he read an article that mentioned people in Quebec were rushing to get vaccinated now instead of paying the health tax. Hope that's true??!! It's forcing their hand but still comes down to their choice. All choices have consequences but it makes a big difference when it affects others as well.6 -

When I google "was meatloaf vaccinated" I see many results like this, "It's unknown whether Meat Loaf vaccinated against COVID-19."
Since there's this, "he had previously said he would “rather die” than face lockdown," I think it is more likely than not he was unvaccinated.
The story came up on the news last night and my mom referred to him as "Meatball"
Rocky Horror is the only musical I like.3 -

Speaking of Quebec:
https://montrealgazette.com/news/quebec/vaccine-passport-now-required-to-enter-saq-and-sqdc-stores/wcm/b0c5afc8-8815-44f5-a033-c36ca884cfd8/amp/
No jab, no buzz.
Quebec on Tuesday began requiring anyone wishing to buy alcohol or cannabis in person to show proof of vaccination at about 500 government-owned retail locations. Would-be shoppers at Société des alcools du Québec and Société québécoise du cannabis stores now need to exhibit their government-issued vaccine passport and personal ID to be allowed inside.6
