Howdy! I set a weekly fitness goal of walking 20 miles/week over 5 days. Happy to report I walked 25 in 6 days on my week 1. Yahoo! Motivation is high. I'm chasing a carrot in that I am turning 70 in August. I told myself I would set the goal of losing 20 pounds from wherever I am on my bday within the following half year--the other half of the year will be building habits to maintain it. That should keep me in a healthy BMI range.
Long term goal: approach this last third of my life ; ) in as good a health as I can muster. I know old age is a lot of work (my mom always added drolly, "for what you get out of it...") so approaching aging with strength, flexibility, and energy strikes me as the best preventative medicine. It will also boost resilience for when I deal with the coming transitions and challenges.9 -

Kim - Yes, it is amazing and still a mystery as to why they did it. The whole isthmus is full of Neolithic remains, tombs, circles, a large market. They think it was a centre for a wide community 4500 years ago. The village of Skara Brae is the best preserved of any in the world. The dresser, the beds, the quern, the hearth. Originally it was roofed with driftwood and turf and all the passageways between the houses were roofed. They even had a drainage system.
We are having a quiet day today, just resting before we have to pack up. We have to leave our cases outside the door tonight, so we have to make ourselves an overnight bag with essentials. I'm going to put a big notice by the door, FRIDGE. We have the Icelandic food we bought in there. Will wrap in bubble wrap.

Annie if your vacuum cleaner has a bag, put in some mothballs, helps to kill the fleas. Also puff some diatomaceous earth into any cracks/spaces between floor and baseboards and outside around perimeter of house. Try a flea comb until you start winning the war. Prep a bowl of water with a few drops of dish soap to receive any live ones you comb out. Fleas and mosquitoes, what WAS the Creator thinking???
Margaret, we use Interceptor, still a poison, because Skye Terriers, like Border Collies and other breeds, can have bad reactions to Heartguard/Ivermectin. Heartworm would be so much worse.

Saturday --
Today, my husband and I cycled the longest ride we've done since prior to his accident: 73 km.
We were planning to do this ride about a month ago, but the weather was awful that weekend - a blast of winter! So we put it off till this weekend.
The start for this particular ride is 150 km away (just over 2 hours' drive) and about halfway there, we drove into thick fog. I hoped that the start town would be out of the fog, but no such luck.
We got there early, had a muffin and got ready to go. Still foggy. Thickly foggy.
The fog made for a challenging start. We couldn't see the contours of the land so it was hard to know how to pace ourselves on climbs and we were taking the descents a little slower. I didn't want a wallaby or sheep to leap out in front of us all of a sudden. I kept willing the sun to shine harder and burn off the fog.
Finally, about 24 km into the ride, the fog lifted and we could see. The ride turned and became hilly for the next 12 km or so, but it was a beautiful section with forest on either side of the road, and even more beautiful when we could see the mountains as we came out of the forest (see photo above).
We had a decent section of relatively flat and then at 58 km, the last set of climbs began. I had spent 2.5 hours in the garden yesterday and my hamstrings were killing me by this point. It was hard to put any power into my climbing. At last, with 3 km to go, the route was downhill to the finish.
It was about 1C (with a "feels like" temp of -3C) when we started. It reached 8.4C (with a "feels like" temp of 7C) toward the end of the ride. My feet were blocks of ice most of the way around.
There wasn't much wind at all ... calmest I think I've ever seen it. In fact, in the beginning, I kind of wished for a little bit of wind to blow the fog away.
Although the ride was tiring, and my legs are feeling it, I enjoyed the ride and the countryside. I love being out in the middle of nowhere in nature with almost no one around.
After the 2 hour drive home, Rhody wanted to go out for a walk in the cold and dark. I took him out for a little while but my legs weren't keen on walking and it was freezing out there.

Thanks for the welcome to this thread.
I'm getting set to run to Porter Farms to pick up my share bag of organic produce ... the second one of this season. This weeks bag has beets, Chinese Cabbage, sugar snap peas, green onions and assorted lettuces.
I hope everyone has a lovely weekend. As it's Independence Day on Monday here in America, my thoughts turn to relationships. Lets all join our cosmic forces and keep thoughts of world peace and harmony this weekend.

Welcome Niki I’m fairly new here too and the support is lovely! You can do it!! I just started over a week ago and am serious about losing over 90 pounds!
Debbie This may or may not help… But when my MIL (86) wasn’t very kind to me I would imagine her as a child. I know that she had a very tough childhood in the UK post WW2 when food was scarce. It helped me often to realize she wasn’t herself. In her 60’s and up to mid 70’s she enjoyed a full life of travel, dancing and companionship with her boyfriend Chip. After Chip passed she mostly slowed down, did church functions with the friends she made. She had lived alone since the late 70’s when she separated from her hubby. They never divorced.
Anyhoo - I know that her behavior was often part of her decline and that she wasn’t really herself. Trust me -not all the time did my mental exercise work! Lol She would find my buttons which typically meant badmouthing my kids, my parents, me personally and or putting down my food. (Lol ) I can laugh now but it *infuriated* me to no end! There were times when DH got home and I was beyond ready for a drive and break! In the last three months or so of her life HE had to do everything. I’m quite sure she simply wanted her child near her. I truly hope you and your DH find peace. Sometimes a mental image trick can help and sometimes it’s the drive or walk as you said!

I’m super proud I haven’t eaten the two desserts purchased FOR me in this last week. My mother bought a piece of cobbler for everyone 3-4 days ago and yesterday they came home with a German chocolate pie from a café and had a piece for me. She said, “You’re not allowed a cheat day on that diet? We used to take weekends off!” to which I said, “Mom- sugar is my nemesis. If I eat that I won’t be able to as easily deny myself other things but more importantly I’ve already reached my calorie deficit. So no, I won’t cheat for anyone! I love you for thinking of me but I have to say no.”
SO…. I win! I went to bed with a -50 (overage) of my 1580 deficit! I’m good with this!! Little battles that make you stronger!

Happy July 2022!
DH is in the hospital, and seems to be doing much better. He has been there for many days, starting with passing out in our bedroom and me calling 911. Our local fire department transported him to the nearest hospital. Good news is that he is doing better. Our daughter and son flew in to Portland & I am grateful my niece took me to the airport to greet them. DH is still in the hospital and is doing better. He is now out of ICU and is in a regular hospital room. I don’t know when he will be coming home but I know he will be coming home when his health improves a little more.
The Fourth of July is 2 days away and there will be fireworks. Our home has a great view. I hope DH will be home to watch the fireworks & keeping my fingers crossed for good luck that he can come home soon.12 -

I thought I wasn't going to be able to do anything much today, but managed the Rumba lesson and the line dancing.
The dance teacher is just exceptional. Unlike other teachers of beginners, she pays a lot of attention to style. Rumba is very stylish and I really appreciate being taught the niceties. It looks so much better when you give it some attitude. Makes it much harder work though, posture etc. Anyway, I was very glad I had shown up.
I flatter myself that she had harder standards for me. 
Starting to think about packing. Ugh! We have plenty of time, but my mind keeps drifting that way.
Last bottle of Tattainger tonight. What a pleasure the posh wines have been. You feel really spoiled. I think we will eat in the Dining Room. Next this afternoon we have Chocolate Tea. I don't eat the sweet things, but we come for the tea and I like to eat the tops off the savouries!!!! It's great to see the layout anyway.

We're still trying to sell our property in Minnesota. We have a showing this morning. Then we will be watching a golf cart parade at the RV resort that we are staying at. I will be playing in a cribbage tournament this afternoon. I have only played a couple of games of cribbage in the last 13 years! Hopefully I will remember how.

First and foremost, welcome to all of you who have joined the thread in June and now July. The thread moves so fast that you may think no one is going to respond to your post, but someone always will. We all welcome your comments and contributions at any time. We look forward to getting to know you!
Well, supposedly, it's 86 degrees outside, but it sure feels hotter. I got one wall of the new storage room caulked, and finally got the entire front yard trimmed. Pleased that I was able to do some hard physical work for three hours. I was running sweat, but I'm learning where my stopping point is, and for a change, didn't push my limits. Well, not too far anyway.
Corey's off to get his hair cut--he wants it to look good while he's at his family reunion. I keep poking myself to make sure, but I'm still more than happy I'm not going. I love his family, but in a group, they are overwhelming, especially the females. I think this will be the first time all six sisters will be in one place since their childhood. Added to that, a number of spouses, and a few of the next generation are attending, most with two to three of their kids in tow.
I'd rather eat boiled okra than be around that many people. For the translation, boiled okra (to me) is much like eating big slimy boogers with seeds in 'em. Some people develop a taste for that, I guess, but then again, some people eat bugs.
Anyway... quiet, peaceful house for now, just the usual domestic noises. Hope your weekend is going well, however you may be spending it.

Heather- I so enjoyed your trip its like when i was young and went to travelogs with my grandma..so much fun..
Debbie- my FIL could drive the angels crazy.. but I learned a few things along the way.. can you find out what music she liked as a young woman,my FIL loved ol Blue eyes so Frank Sinatra we played alot for him.. Prime days are coming up.. if you can pick up a cheap echo dot to put in her bedroom and put music she likes it helps so very very much,we even did that for Jeans mom.. just set it up through Pandora or some other device and you should be ready to go..
Lisa- you crack me up girl..i wouldn't touch Okra with a 1 10 ft pole..
I made the mistake of going to Costco around noon today.. gee you would think everyone would be out doing picnics ,but no everyone and there brother was shopping..I darn near had a panic attic but i picked up my script and a couple of other things and split..
