Good morning all. Thanks for the fresh start Barbie. Have been reading along, catching up, not taking a lot of notes but enjoying the conversations.
The talk of purging and organizing is very motivating to me. I have been using a start/stop method for it and need to get into more consistent gear. This week, while it may not sound like much, I got motivated to put two smaller trashcans of boards taken down with removal of things in basement. They have just been sitting there since last December when brother, SIL and I worked on ceilings. I don't have anyone to haul the stuff away, but I can put it out for trash weekly-so I am getting it done. This weekend I plan to cut some of the bigger pieces down to size. I need to be careful not to overload things.
Work continues. Having some frustrations with personnel. Keep checking to make sure it is not just me fed up with working (some days maybe!), but I think it is more that a couple of folks are just plain lacking common sense and don't take responsibility. Working on the best way to tune them up.
Have decided to move forward with surgery for prolapse issue. Physical Therapy has been very helpful (wish they had this 20 years ago so more of the issue could have been prevented) but it will not completely resolve issues. Doctor says with my activity level, it is a good idea. If I want to sit around for the rest of my life I could tolerate the issue-but that is not for me! Probably won't be on schedule for a month or so, but that's ok. Will get my brother situated and can get house ready for my limited mobility for a few weeks.
Heather-the cruise sounds delightful!
Off to get ready for work. Full day today-half day tomorrow and long weekend!
Take care all,

Finished my article for the Guardian. I know it won't get published, but I had to have a try. I may be able to place a modified version somewhere else, perhaps the local paper.
Just got to titivate it and write a covering email.
Relieved and happy to have got it done. Grandkids tomorrow, so I had a bit of a deadline.

The visit to the retina specialist yesterday took a long time and lots of tests and was someone inconclusive. The tests ruled out macular degeneration, glaucoma, optic nerve problem, retina tear, and detached retina but didn't explain the the shadow I see at the top of my left eye (sort of like the shading on the windshield of cars) so I've been referred for a vision field test to another specialist.
Thank you for all your kind words. This thread is a lifeline for me, too, so it's important that I make the effort to get it ready for all of us.
Regarding all the clutter clearing downsizing, it's like how do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time.

Barbie ~ Glad you have gone forward with all the eye tests and hope that the new referral will bring an answer to your problem!
Karen ~ I looked up Class and Trash but they don't seem to be in Georgia. It sounds like they are doing a wonderful job removing your furniture. Your brother is very talented and I am glad he is accepting the help you are offering.
Tracy ~ Love the ceramic castle. Every time you show us your creations, it makes me smile.
Rebecca ~ The plans for your sister's remembrance of her husband sound wonderful. By any chance, was he a Mennonite?
Had lunch with my two girl friends yesterday and it was really good to get out! BBQ with Carolina Vinegar sauce. I grew up on BBQ from a place called Fresh Air and this BBQ had the same flavor.

I posted this at the end of August..I wanted to start off the month of September with it too. It is a reminder to me that finding the great in everyone (include myself) and doing my part to nurture that person including myself is a lifetime goal. What make Sunni Lee a hero to me is she recognized and acknowledged those who helped her reach her goals. I like to think we are all Olympic Champions in training. Winning or losing is not what my post is all about. It is just playing the game. Yesterday at the fair in the education building most of the booths had wheels to spin and then they asked you a question. After the question they gave you a small prize. I just loved to spin the wheel answer the question. I refused the prizes (Most were small pieces of candy.) I just enjoyed playing the game.
Rebecca I want to hear the opera.
Uplifting story about Sunni Lee the gold medal gymnist. Turns out she went to grade school right up the street from me. The story is the gym teacher recognized her talent in Kindergarten. He had taught for many years and said she was the strongest student he ever had. He called the proprieter of the gym where Sunni ultimately trained and told them about her and asked if she could go there on a scholarship. Her family had little money. She was accepted, and the rest is history. This summer about two weeks ago she came back to the school and donated $50,000 to the school's STEM program. I talked to one of the custodians who was there and we both agreed we need more Sunni Lee's in the world and gym teachers like Scott Richards who recognize the talent and does something to see that it grows.4 -
coming back around like a bad penny... seems I go through spurts and cycles. Turning 55 in a week so I really need to get in better shape. My paternal side of the family has long genes for sure but I don't want to just count on genetics! So back to food logging and trying to close my apple watch circles every day.
I'll be checking in regularly again...3 -
Kim, I am interested in any and all information on estate planning, since we are in the throes of helping Mama with it. It is tough and brings lots of raw emotions to the forefront.
I found a free on Kindle Unlimited book yesterday that was specific to my state that is being somewhat helpful.

Thanks for starting us out in September, Barbie!!!
Tracey, that castle and dragon is so cool!
God Bless, Rebecca. It all sounds like it's going to be wonderful and I'm so glad you're going to be there to help your sister "enjoy" it. I know people like that, I am people like that, who always want to tend to others. Then they get swept up in not being in the moment. This needs to be her time to be in the moment. You're a good sister.
OF COURSE... wrote all of this in the old thread!!! So... I'll copy/paste here.
Margaret, I'm so glad you enjoyed THE FAIR for us! We haven't gone back in years and don't intend to! LOL! WAY too much for us old geezers anymore. Everything you said is true and so hilarious. Love our state fair and it's one of THE BEST, but it's just too much and we've found it just doesn't change enough. Kids still love going and they take their kids and we live vicariously through them. AJ will be out there on Friday and Sunday night at the Vixen booth and she's taking the kids with her on Sunday all day. Lacy, Nick and Kolten are going on Saturday. We've had GREAT weather, except for last Saturday with the STORMS!!! YIKES!!!
Well, my office was quite pleasant. It is brand new, done in really nice, blues and sort of off-white, greyish, I think. It might be white, but the light was dim, because I don't like fluorescents so I kept it low. AND I have one of those adjustable desks, so I could stand if I had a mind to. Chair seems comfortable. File cabinet is very small, but I guess I don't have much to put into it. We'll see when I really move in. NOW, the only thing left is getting me a large monitor and keyboard and mouse. I have a district-issues 13" laptop, but this old lady will NOT be playing with 38x2400 sized spreadsheets on that little thing!!! So I've got a call into the tech-geeks (and my boss) to set me up and I saw one of the DO-dudes yesterday (in person) and we were chatting and he said that there were some older "smaller" (18-20") monitors that I might be able to utilize until my big one comes in. Anything is better than this teeny thing. So, I think I'll be happy. No phone yet, but I called hubby while I was sitting there and the call went through, so I get cell service. Not great service, but it rings. lol.

I've been thinking that my basil plant has been getting a little overgrown recently.
Yesterday, I bought some pine nuts. They were from the veggie place that does stuff in bulk, so I caught them in a chute in a paper bag! I used about half of them to make enough pesto for two occasions. Plant now shorn, but still looking healthy.
Amazingly, it survived the June cruise, by going in the shade in the utility room. Two weeks! I think it was on the edge when I got back, but it rallied.
Looking forward to broccoli, peas, broad beans, scallions, artichoke and homemade pesto, with king prawns. Tagliatelle for DH.
My friend G is out of her apartment! She found it all a stress filled torture, but it's done at last. The guys are delivering her stuff tomorrow at 8 am, down in Southsea, where her one bed flat is. She has to drive down this evening and sleep on the floor as she got rid of the bed to charity. It is about 5 or 6 hours drive.
I have been a kind of 'text friend' while this was going on. I think it helped her to have someone on the end of the phone. It's hard doing all this, all alone, with ADHD when you are 73.
At the moment she is in a hotel lounge, relaxing, before beginning the long journey.
My heart goes out to her.

Barbie-- Thanks for getting us started on the new month. Sounds like they ruled out a lot, but still no answers. Pray the new doctor can find the problem and know how to fix it.
Margaret--I agree that was a great story about Sunni Lee. Thanks for sharing.
Karen--Another beautiful picture by your brother. I am glad to hear he is selling some and sharing his work with others to enjoy. What a Blessing.
Rebecca--Sending hugs and prayers for you and your sister.
Tracey--I do think Jonah will like that.
Kim--I am also interested in the generation skipping as we have a grand daughter we want to leave part of the money to.
Machka--Thanks you have given me a lot to think about and work on.
Enjoyed the concert at the Fair last evening. They started late so was later than planned when we got home. Did not look around and can not say I missed it. DH and DGS did walk around during the last hour of the concert. So it was good for all of us.
Blessings, Vicki GRAND ISLAND, NE3 -
MargaretTurk--So good of Sunni Lee to remember her school
hap2go--Happy Birthday!
Dr.KatieBug--It will be satisfying when the estate planning is done
Carla--Sounds like a really nice office with the blue
Heather--Love that Basil Plant! I hope G likes her new home!
My husband has a new computer...an eye gaze...that uses his eyes to create speech and also to send texts and emails. Medicare paid for this. We are working on how to use it. I am reading a fun novel that takes place on Nantucket with an Inn and restaurants and wine and food and needlepoint. Very easy read, very relaxing. I got some begonias on sale and sprayed them with anti deer spray. I purchased some impatiens for inside the house and have them in the window. Very pretty.4 -
Rosemarie - G has lived in the flat down south for a number of years. She continually travelled between the two places. She sold the southern one to her son, so she had some money to live on,and he was happy for her to continue to live there. Personally, I think the legal situation should be reviewed, but she is happy with it. When she actually owned it, she did a complete reno. I like it and it is close to the sea, where she swims every day in the warmer months. It is ex-council, which means it used to be public housing, so was a cheap buy. The only problem with it is that it is on the third floor, up concrete stairs. She is fit and healthy at the moment, but ......
I think her son, who is rich, should buy her one with an elevator. Good investment for him.
I don't interfere. At least now she has some money from the York apartment sale to live on and enjoy herself. She loves to travel and dine out. No pension, apart from basic government pension. She is lucky she has a rich son. Unfortunately, her daughter, a once famous model, is estranged from her, so she never sees those two grandchildren. It is a never healing wound. So sad.
You can't buy mental health. She has struggled all her life, even at school when I first knew her. Probably the most severe mental health problems that I personally know. The rest of the family also. Her younger sister, who I knew, killed herself many years ago. Her elder brother became a hermit before he died in squalor. Every day for her is a triumph of will. She is a hero. I love her.
My pesto pasta was fabulous. I could hear DH grunting with satisfaction!

Karen - so agree with the worthless article so hard for some to embrace. I have a friend down the street who has EVERY item from both of her grandparents homes, her mother's home, all of her stuff, and now her daughter is living with her so there is all of her stuff too. 4 bedrooms stacked floor to ceiling, the garage full, 5 sheds in the back yard, and the attic crawl space completely packed - an earthquake and it will take a back hoe to get their bodies out. the worst part of it is she will admit she did not and does not like any of the furniture/lamps/art that the generations before liked, but feels it is disrespectful to let go of it. I refuse to visit inside.
I will put up some info on groups on trusts.... and will update it as I continue to learn, be a bit patient with me... it will take me a few days to get stuff up there.

But you're right, he probably won't ever know what I spared him from, if I do this right. It's a natural consequence of me taking responsibility for the disposition of my/our belongings and getting my affairs in order.
Heather,. My brother Gary did have some notecards made many years ago; he had worked for an advertising agency for many years so had knowledge about magazines, brochures, business cards, etc. They were lovely. I'll mention it to him. There is a small business here called Gracie's Cottage that carries an eclectic mix of vintage items, cottage chic, local art, etc. I'm sure he could market them there. I don't know if he'd be up for anything else now, but it's an idea for the future. I hope once we get him into his own apartment, he will have time to heal from the last 7 years of being in group homes. I feel so bad for him. I have to be careful not to spook him. Baby steps.
Rebecca, First, I want to echo what the others have said about being privileged to see that darling Athena grow up. She is a delightful child and I look forward to the photos and updates.
Second, my heart is with you as you support your sister get through the loss of her husband. It sounds as if his celebration of life is going to be amazing. It's so heartwarming to hear of the enthusiastic RSVP response - it speaks volumes about him.
Kim, I am very interested in a group discussion about generation skipping, and anything else you would be willing to share about estate planning. I need to get that all done, update wills, etc., and it intimidates me a bit. It seems to me that many attorneys aren't adept at explanations that a person can understand (and retain). I figure if a professional really understands something, he/she should be able to customize the explanation for a specific client.
Kelly, I know you are so busy! I'm looking forward to seeing photo updates of your precious grandchildren.

Today, my housekeeper and I are going to tackle the storage unit. I hope we can get it empty. If not, my granddaughter has offered to help me over Labor Day weekend.

Thanks! I appreciate you! I recall one morning while sister, him and I were having coffee, contemplating life. He mentioned that he would always like for people to remember him as a darn nice guy, and I think that his celebration of life will definitely reflect that. My latest conversation with my sister was about her struggles missing out on all the memories of growing old (in the marriage) with him. She will hear so many stories from many people that knew him before they had gotten together. Being that my sister and him were remodeling his childhood home, the neighbors are people he's grown up with, or went to school with. So hopefully she will get strength from me "in her corner".
This past week I didn't put a long rambling post on Facebook celebrating my husbands birthday. It just felt like it would be salt on my sisters wound. Out of respect for her feelings I made it really low key. Husband understood.💖😢
I am bringing some reusable shopping bags for items I left at her place last June. She was going to box up and send me, but now since she's driving me up to sons I can pack it all up myself. I also want to be able to get some of her canned items like zucchini salsa, tomato sauce and anything else I can manage to receive.💖. Maybe we'll even can something while I'm there! I have never canned anything, can ya tell?!!😜😂😂
Hugs ladies!

I think his parents were, and the lady that was caring for his parents later in their lives was a Mennonite. I think Clair was (just?) a Christian.💖. I asked my sister if she had been attending the church in Shedd. She said not yet, as she would be just crying in the back.😢.

Carol,
I think there are only 3 Class and Trash stores. Not a nationwide chain, but privately owned by Ken & Lisa Waldrop. 2 in Virginia and 1 in North Carolina. I wish there was one in Georgia, Carol. Lisa has made this part of our downsizing nearly painless.
Catalina and I accomplished more than I thought possible at the storage unit today. I'm knackered.
