@globalhiker I like your statement "Self-care is the SECRET. If I can nail the self-care routine, I can master self-control".
This is exactly where I am right now. I am trying to get some consistent self-care routines in place to help battle the anxiety/depression. I think the better we take care of ourselves the less likely we will want to consume alcohol which will negatively impact our forward momentum.
Self-Care I have undertaken in the last few months:- Weekly sessions with a counselor to help me process my husband's death
- Started taking anxiety meds - sometimes we can't do it alone
- Signed up with Massage Envy - had both a facial and a massage this week. Next appointments are already scheduled in Mesa in October.
- Rejoined Club Pilates in Mesa beginning 10/1
- Planned trip to go to the Albequerque balloon festival with my son and his family in October
- Cutting back on alcohol
- Cutting back on Diet Coke
Self-Care to start:- Find a volunteer opportunity - giving back to others will help improve my mental state
- Start cooking and eating healthy again - I enjoy cooking, but I have not cooked at all for 6 months. I would like to lose the 10 vanity pounds that I put on during Covid to get back to my happy weight.
- Develop some new interests and meet new people in Mesa. Some things include the neighborhood hiking club, learning to play pickle ball, and joining in on Bunco (I have never played, but think I might like it.)
- Detox from Social Media

@globalhiker happy anniversary!
@Breathe57103 those sound like great self-care plans.
Had an A day yesterday and regret it. It was fun at the time but my body just can’t process the strong beers I like very well these days. My fitbit summarizes all of my calories in each category for the day, and yesterday my alcohol calories (600) were higher than almost every meal. That’s a bit of a wake up call in itself.
I’m going to have an AF day today and try to run a virtual 5k tomorrow morning for 9/11. I can do it any time in September but I think doing it on the anniversary would be good.
Hope everyone is having a good weekend!6 -
@pezhed...okay, I gotta ask...how does one do a "virtual" run ?? I'm imagining running in place in my rec room for 5K. Or not doing it and saying I did ?? SO not my style, that.
Muscle memory. As I was standing at my kitchen window, watching Catpuccino watching SIL #2 ride my big orange lawn tractor around my nature preserve [groundhogs-possums-deer-turkey-racoons-coyotes-alleycats-and a recent unwelcome addition, a skunk ], I reached over and twisted the cap off a bottle of pinot grigio, poured a generous glass and began to sip. what was I not thinking ??
Too late now...More glasses to follow with my "leftover" supper of brown rice, rotisserie chicken and lots of steamed veggies. Yes, Scarlet, tomorrow is another day.

I haven't posted in a while but I've been tracking. I have been so busy at work!
Mon 9/5 - Drinks (4) - Toured the Wisconsin battleship in Norfolk with weekend guests. They and we loved it.
Tue 9/6 - Drinks (5) - Guests headed out AM. Late night, drank a beer and then several glasses of wine and binged on peanut butter while binge-watching the Handmaid's Tale until 1 a.m. This is when I go off plan. I need to just go to bed on time and all is well.
Wed 9/7 - AF - Weight is up. I will do better the rest of this week
Thu 9/8 - Drinks (1) - Date night
Fri 9/9 - AF - For anyone who likes IPAs, I found a great zero calorie NA drink - Lagunitas Hop Hoppy Refresher
Sat 9/10 - Drinks (1) - Rode bikes 43 miles at the Great Dismal Swamp today, then to local brewery for music and a beer and pizza. Great day! Great weather! I'm beat!
Rolling Total: 2 AF days out of 10 (Plan was 5 out of 10)

I love this group ❤️
I have greatly reduced my drinking since June and had a great month in August with 26 out of 31 AF days. This month I am trying to be mindful and make self care a priority.
9/1-9/7: 7 out of 7 AF
9/8: AF
Moving my parents. Stress. No self care done since August. Hoping for yoga tomorrow.
9/9: AF Yesterday was tough. Not only moving my parents but also at the end there were tears from leaving the house they had called home for 32 years. And of course I had to say goodbye to my oasis, the pool. They need to downsize and they know it it’s just bittersweet.
9/10: AF I actually struggled a bit to not drink last night. But I didn’t want to break my streak, which seems silly to me. I also didn’t want the hangover as I have work to do today. I never came here with the intentions of never drinking again but I’m starting to wonder…? The thought of never drinking again kind of makes me feel pressure. I’m not sure why I feel like I need to put a label on all of this.
Thanks for listening to me ramble.
I’m in the US so I’m remembering all we lost so tragically on this day 21 years ago.9 -
Catching up with reading 3 pages.
Whirlwind here with packing. Infuriates me that "someone" (hint:only male in house) thinks packing without newspaper filler or bubble wrap is ok.
The POD is traveling 1600 miles. Do you really think those light bulbs next to the ceramic lamp base in that box along with the decorative tequila bottle are going to be intact when it gets there?
Thankfully all this has not made me WANT to drink.
It is the lunches and dinners everyone wants to have with us before we go, that are raising havoc with my healthy eating style. PLEASE take me where they offer a fresh salad!!!! After an evening of pizza Friday night, chicken parm sandwiches Thursday night, I was so lethargic from those heavy foods I needed a power nap yesterday to reboot.

LOL!! It’s just running 5k outside (or on a treadmill I guess) wherever you are but as part of a “race”. The option cropped up for most races during the pandemic, which is great because this race was based in New Jersey while I am in Virginia. Most of the time you need to send them data from an app for them to document your time, though in this case they don’t. The race is a fundraiser for the Travis Manion Foundation, so your registration fee and whatever fundraising you do goes toward the organization like a real live 5k.
Anyway I did it! Both the AF Saturday and the 5k this morning. My pace was 10:07 minutes per mile. Nothing to write home about but certainly the fastest I’ve gone in a while! So that makes my running total 4/10 AF days. I will likely drink today and take a couple consecutive days off this upcoming week to catch up.

I am Dawn. I live in Cranbrook BC.
I joined this thread in November of 2018 as a daily drinker.
I have found a sweet spot for myself, 16-20 AF days per month.
I had 18 for August.
I will be in Mexico for a good chunk of September and will definitely be having some Margaritas and possibly Cervezas.
I post in the mornings to MFP, so the next day for this thread.
Diary style.
Wednesday Sept 07 - AF - Planned AF for Thursday, and planned drinks for Friday and or Saturday. I will be working a very long day on Friday, but after that I am officially on holiday and will get my garden covered so frost won't hit it while I am away, plus 100 other things that I need to do before flying off. Virgo, almost 62
Thursday Sept 08 - AF - Friday is going to be a very long workday, so I just couldn't have drinks Thursday night.
Friday Sept 09 - Drinks - Officially on my vacation clock at 9pm
Saturday Sept 10 - Drinks - Prosecco in the late afternoon with some Brie. Planned AF Sunday and Monday. I leave home at 4am on Tuesday and will arrive in LA at 5pm. Planning AF for that night. The next day I fly to Zhihuatanejo and arrive there at 5pm, not sure about alcohol that night. I will post tomorrow morning and then pack up my laptop.

Apparently the Hawkeye and Packer offenses didn't get the memo that I am trying to stay sober. Both their offenses look terrible!
Fortunately I didn't drink. I'm feeling really good about not drinking right now. It is becoming less of a concious decision not to drink and more just part of my daily routine. Looking forward to the day I can report AF and DCF.
9/1 - 9/7 AF
9/8 AF and 2 Diet Cokes
9/9 AF and 2 Diet Cokes

Hello friends, I am touched by everything that everyone said. I feel like I am in a group of people who care - about others and want to care about themselves.
Today I made an effort to go to yoga and it helped me a lot. It grounds me.
@Breathe57103 your progress is so inspiring. You inspire me. You are helping me and others. When you are in town, do reach out. I do 6 am hikes and if you are local, reach out. No good at golfing (yet).
Be strong this week - because you can

@joans1976 I have a lot of sadness around 9/11, lost my best friends and used to work very close to that location, all I can say is what I learned was to let go and keep creating my next future. Our goal - all of us- is to create our next best future.7
-
@GlobalHiker thank you for the invitation to reach out. My husband and I went to Usery Park almost everyday for a hike. I am an early morning person as well. I will let you know when I get settled back in and we can arrange to meet.5

Well.....I had planned to have a few glasses of wine on Saturday. What I did NOT plan on was eating everything that was not nailed down. I felt so sick yesterday and gained weight!! Ugh....when I drink I swear my logical thinking goes out the window. When will I learn? Will get up dust myself off and try again.6 -
Another AF weekend navigated. I'm using an app called Drinkaware to track my "none" drinking. Looking at the 22 days AF in a row is keeping me motivated not to drink just out of habit.
However, I'm hoping it'll also help me next month to transition into occasional drinking too. The song "its 5 o'clock somewhere" should be a way of life7 -
@Stockholm_Andy good to know about that app, I may check it out. I've only every used TryDry but it's better for ongoing non-drinking, which is not my goal right now.
I had 4 beers yesterday but made sure some of them were light, so I feel fine today. I think I had two sturdy ones and two lighter (<5% ones). I'd thought about having a bourbon night cap but ultimately decided against it and I'm so glad I did! It's almost always a bad idea to top off a beer night with any liquor for me. My 3 year old went to bed at a reasonable hour the past two nights so DH and I actually got to play cribbage for the first time in ages last night. And the night before that we watched Prey, which I highly recommend. It's the prequel to the Predator movies, which I've never seen, but it's set in the 1700s in the northern US plains. Beautiful scenery, and the Native Americans are actually played by Native American actors for once.6
