This November the 28th, (my late Dad's birthday) will mark my 4th year on this thread.
Not only has it kept me accountable for my alcohol consumption, it truly has become a community for me, especially while we were in various lockdowns.
Sticking with my (reachable) goal of the last few years, 16-20 AF days. I have been successful each month with this expect for most recently in September when I was having a Margarita every day in Mexico and reached only 14AF for the month.
Diary Style:
Sunday November 6th - AF - Maybe I got it out of my system, even if I didn't, I do want to string a bunch of AF days together.
Monday November 7th - AF - Barely any work this week, which is usually a recipe for me to have drinks since I don't have anything pressing. Last week I was just too darned exhausted, and way too easily slipped right back into having drinks every single day. Terrible for my weight, and that has been my motivator since day 1: drink less to lose weight.
Rolling total: 2AF days out of 7 days3 -
My weird AF drink of choice last night:
I have slowly been getting through a bucket of beets: scrubbing, peeling, roasting 2 pans at a time and boiling a big pot full at the same time. I had pulled the beets out of the cooled off boiling water, and then...drank the broth left over! Oh my, was it ever delicious. It did not resemble a cocktail in any way, so I wasn't triggered to want the "real" thing. Earthy, lovely, and warm for a cold evening. What a treat. I will have that again when I get around to the next batch.
I do many things with cooked beets, for now I am peeling, cooking, and freezing most of them so that they will be ready when I want to make beet burgers, harvard beets, borscht and other stuff.
They get too difficult to peel within a week, so peeling them while they are still hard is my goal. 2/3rds of the way through the last bucket. (Then I will be on to the carrots)5 -
New to this thread. You all inspire me. I’m curious how you started the less alcohol journey.
I would like to make some changes and looking for tips to just start.
Thank
You2 -
@bethellen71 Welcome! What great questions! I have only been here 5 months but have made great progress. I log everything I eat and drink into MFP so I went and tallied the month before and just told myself it would be less for the first month I was on this thread. That helped, just being more aware. I know some people set goals like no more than 2 drinks in a night, no more than 2 nights in a row, no drinking on work/school nights, all sorts of tricks. If you know how to search you can search for “October Less Alcohol Challenge” and you will see a full month of examples. Also there are great articles and tips on the first page of this thread. Best of luck to you!4

@dawnbgethealthy The “Beet” Lady! Yes, definitely still going to Bali! Just postponed. I’m pretty fatigued right now and have a lot of appointments then surgery the beginning of December. I was planning to leave December 17 and I just don’t think I’ll be healed enough by then. Not going to miss it though! 🍍🧉🔥4

@joans1976
I'm sure that you are tired as your body is doing its best to fight.
@bethellen71
Welcome to the group. Drinking less means something different per individual. For myself, I had my first AF day in late 2018, after years and years of daily drinks. It was hard! My personal reason and motivation is to lose weight. When I drink I gain weight, when I don't I lose weight. Kind of simple. My theory is that our bodies stop burning fat as soon as we add alcohol, so no matter how hard we work at getting that furnace going it shuts off when alcohol passes our lips because it needs to deal with that.
Not saying that it is easy to cut back, anymore than it is easy to cut back on favourite foods. What are your reasons for wanting to drink less?
@Lilylady3k
Cucumber serrano!
@Stockholm_Andy
I really really really hope that you will post some photos and narrative from your vacay!!5 -

Tuesday November 8th - AF - That was a white knuckler, I very much wanted to have a couple of drinks. Minus 18c here this morning as I type this. I just found out this morning that everyone at the restaurant is sick so that I will be doing a marathon open til' close. I am now very glad that I did not give in to my desire for drinks last night!! The old gal from the service staff to the rescue lol. It will be a challenge not to have drinks after a very long shift like that, but going to try to be AF for Wednesday.

I have been AF since 09/26/2022 and keeping strong! I didn't realize until now how many social activities revolve around alcohol until now. I've also noticed that there are "friends" who don't call me to hang out or do things anymore because I don't want to "have fun". I guess I thought people could have fun without indulging in alcohol, but maybe that's just me!
Anyway, I recently jumped back on the wagon to build a healthier me! I've got 27 more #s to lose until I will be where I was back in 2018! That is my first goal!10 -
AF - Nov 1, 2, 3, 4, 7, 8
A- Nov 5 (1 wine), 6 (4 oz beer), 8 (1wine)
Tried one on the drinks with hemp. It’s supposed to calm you … didn’t seem to make a difference. Still really stressed so had a glass of wine, too.
Looking forward to to a quiet tomorrow.

Hello friends,
Catching up here. @joans1976 I went through some maybe similar medical issues and surgeries and I sense (and wish and expect) a good outcome.
Tonight my husband said something to me that made sense - each and every day, no matter what happens in life, I need to put myself first. I am a royal failure at this.
Each and every day, my goal should be to charge up my own batteries and empower myself, before I begin my work day and get involved in starting to help others and my clients.
He is right. I need to look out for #1 each morning, charge up my batteries, then be ready to hit my goals for the day. This has to be a pre-planned daily event, agreed with myself and non-negotiable (meaning no excuses).
Yup. Time to take charge of #1.5 -
