LESS Alcohol ~ FEBRUARY 2023 ~ One Day at A Time

@Jthanmyfitnesspal I am also coming at this from a weight loss and "performance" angle. I put that in quotes because I am really nothing more than a casual jogger but find that it is more challenging (and less enjoyable) since I put on some pounds. Right now I am trying to drop a few while it's still too cold here for outdoor running. I'm in the PNW and we are expecting snow in the early morning so it will be a few more weeks. I don't do gyms and I don't have a treadmill so my "running" is weather dependent.
So far for Feb I am 13 AF/21, on track and the month is nearly over!
I am in the PNW also what area? I am southwest of T town.3 -
@Jthanmyfitnesspal I am also coming at this from a weight loss and "performance" angle.
I should have put "performance" in quotes, too. I'm no great athlete (slow AF). But, I'm faster when I minimize the C2H5(OH)!5 -
Well kid's I was not AF yesterday but it was DH's birthday and he wanted pizza and beer....I'm in.
Stopped at 1.5 beers and had 3 slices of pizza then home for a nap. Just can't stay awake after alcohol and pizza.
But the win over the past well year is, when we go out like this I don't come home and continue to drink. In the 'old' life I would continue into the night until bed ... after I got up from the beer nap.
since DH is home most of the time now we seem to be slipping into a habit of eating out several times of week that include a beer. Something we have discussed and are well aware of it.
On the upside. The packing and planing are going well for our 'trip' I am so looking forward to the journey/vacation we plan to stretch this out for 3-4 weeks.
If anyone has some 'must see' places between WA state and KY let me know!8 -
Pavlovian response ?? Nothing concerning alcohol. The opening theme music for "Law and Order". Doesn't matter if I've seen the episode 3 times...must-sit-and-watch...

February accountability: 11 days AF
Alcohol: 11 days (19 drinks)
Goal: Limit 2 glasses per day; 12-16 AF days this month.
2/22 - AF; Fever Tree Lime & Yuzu. DH AF too. Ash Wednesday
I've caught up my AF days with my A days! Yeah!! It was a push but did it and I'm now only 1 short for my minimum goal of 12 days.
Tomorrow night dinner out with another couple and I know we'll order a bottle of wine at this new Italian restaurant B.B. Italia Bistro & Bar we are trying out.5 -
@forestdweller1 I love your answer “sound of a baby or kitty crying … must be found and comforted”
I fully attribute at least part of my ability to keep AF to a lapful of purring kitties (usually both at once)= instant meditation/lower heart rate/bp /better mood etc. Plus you can’t get up bc you are cat furniture. So i guess mean they comfort me at least as much as i them.7 -
Hello all,
I thought about having wine last night but got busy with other things and the desire was quickly gone. I like to plan ahead which seems to work well so far. I’m planning on 2 Prosecco's with a dinner tomorrow night and then maybe on Sat. For me, I do like the idea of staying AF during the weekdays (tomorrow exception). I’m
Still testing out this new community and the great support and ideas I have found here.
You are all so helpful and doing great things.
Feb stats:
AF - 14
A - 7
Goals: No more than 2 glasses per day

I took Mr B to the dogtor. We talked a lot, I won't bore with the details unless our resident vet tech demands it. Long story short, nobody has any clue what is going on. Doc speculated a little but was really cautious in his wording as this is clearly beyond him. We'll be thinking about a neurologist next - that can get expensive in a hurry...I don't know what to think or do anymore, I'm just taking it day by day and hoping this guy hangs on. He's lost a solid pound somewhere along the way, which is a lot for a 14 lb dog. (Meanwhile, Har dog managed to pack on another three pounds, he's up to 17 now.)
He was such a mess when we found him, and he has come so far. We have done everything we can to give him a good home, a good life, a good pack. On our last trip, he even let one of our grandsons pet him for the first time. I'm scared of losing him. I'm tired all the time. I'm stressed and quick to anger. I'm emotionally exhausted. I'm drinking more and more to try to cope and I know perfectly well that's a bs response. I feel like I'm coming apart at the seams.

Yesterday my husband and I were in our old town where we used to live and went to our favorite dive bar for lunch. I ordered a NA Becks and was shocked when my husband did the same. I then went on to have a salad instead of all the delicious bar food I usually want to order. I REALLY need to lose weight and I cannot keep "bleeping" around about this. I was rewarded by being down a pound this morning. Yay! I did my morning sobriety meditation just now and I will try to conjure the feelings of serenity if and when stresses that make me want a drink come up as they surely will. I am really trying to just live peacefully and with gratitude, even when things don't go my way. I am grateful it will be nearly 80 degrees today which is unheard of in February in the Mid Atlantic. The daffodils are all blooming. It is just crazy!
I am also grateful for all of you and your honesty, tips, insights etc. It keeps me motivated and accountable.11 -
Hey everyone, I’m Amanda. I live in Michigan and it is freezing and gray here but at least it’s staying light out past 5 pm now. ☀️
I joined this lovely thread in the summer of 2022 and it has made a huge difference in my life! I’ve gone from being 25% AF to 98% AF.
The people here are kind and real and smart and fun! Welcome to all newcomers!
2/1-2/7: 6 out of 7 AF
2/8-2/14: 7 out of 7 AF
2/15-2/22: 7 out of 7 AF
2/21: AF
This week is flying by. I’m still employed. My boss sends me a text everyday asking how I am which is 🤮. I’m actually really tired (expected from the radiation) and sore and stiff. I *might* be carrying a little stress.
19 days AF ✨
2/22: AF
Last night I realized I may be faced with a social situation this weekend where everyone around me is drinking. I may feel pressure to drink. I will keep my “tools” handy and remind myself of the incapacitating hangover AND that I am in active cancer treatment right now and do not need to add alcohol to what my body is going through. But, it will be fun to see friends from college and eat good food and forget about life for awhile.9 -
@mfowler883 First, many hugs to you, your family and the doggos. I am not a veterinarian and I have never laid eyes on Bentleys imaging or even him really besides a couple of pictures here. You seem like an informed, considerate dog owner. What you are going through is gut wrenching and I’m not surprised this is affecting a lot of aspects of your life.
I am going to send you a friend request in a bit so we can send messages. We don’t have to be best MFP buds or anything but it may be easier than talking on here in this public space.5 -
@SunnyDays930 I was just thinking about you a couple of days ago! Don’t you love it when your good choices show positive results? I’m so jealous of you seeing daffodils! We just had a crazy ice storm here (Michigan) and I can hear people angrily scraping their windshields so they can get to work!5

2/22: AF - I had an Athletic Brewing NA IPA last night with dinner. I also have some Heineken 0.0 on hand but they're not my favorite right now. @mfowler883 (or anyone else) Any suggestions for mixing another beer with the Heineken?
Tonight we will be going to a local favorite brewery - New Realm. I was looking at their menu last night and they actually brew an NA IPA! I can't wait to try it out. They also have a low-cal IPA. I'm being strict on tracking my food right now. So far I've made it TWO whole days LOL. I have today planned out, including the brewery choices.

@mfowler883 I'm so sorry that B is not doing well.4

I just typed Happy Hump day we made it to Wednesday! Then I realised it's Thursday so even closer to the weekend!!!
AF 12 A 10.
Catching up on the thread I laughed out loud at the Pavlovian response from @Womona I'm certain I'm just the same5 -
@joans1976 Your social outing sounds fun! I hope you have a great time. If you decide not to drink the nice thing is that there are better NA options out there now. Do you like cranberry juice and club soda (my virgin Cape Cod)? That's my easy go-to and it tastes the same (to me) as the real thing.5

I have not felt like myself the past 2 months with nightly insomnia then the afternoon crash-nap. I re-started thyroid meds and it's day 3 now and I can sleep and feel normal this morning. Normal to me means feeling energized in the morning and "can't wait" to exercise feeling. I also took 2 melotonin last night which helped.
I never thought sleep was so critical to how well I could manage myself the next day with "staying on track", but it's huge for me now that I realize not sleeping well gave me a ton of fatigue and depression during the day and food or drink did absolutely ZERO to help me feel better. ZERO!
Hate taking meds and hadn't been for years but doc is sending me a refill. I'm getting old and if I need it, so be it.
Getting on my exercise bike right now and plan to make today a great AF day!7 -
@lmlmrn
Couer d'Alene Idaho is beautiful, and less taxes than Washington. Montana has even less taxes.
I will be excited to hear about the places that you get to : - )3 -
I am Dawn, I live in SE BC Canada
My ongoing goal remains, 16-20 AF days per month.
I had 17AF days for January (a long month)
I do this diary style to keep track, and I post the next morning
Sunday Feb 19 - AF - I may have a couple of drinks after my pedicure on Tuesday eve.
Monday Feb 20 - AF - Having drinks crossed my mind, but I knew that I could wait.
Tuesday Feb 21 - 2 drinks after my pedicure - I was "feeling it" after 1 1/2. It used to be 3. Planned AF for Wednesday and Thursday.
Wednesday Feb 22 - AF - Left work sick. 2 of my friends that I went to the comedy show with on Saturday tested positive for Covid Wednesday morning. I have tested negative so far, but haven't had the energy to test again. I will later today. I had planned AF anyway for Wednesday and Thursday. Hard to eat much less drink alcohol.
Rolling total: 13AF days out of 22 days. 50% AF won't cut it to reach my goal in 28 days (reminder to self)6 -

Yeah, send it. Not that I mind public discussion, maybe somebody somewhere has an idea that hasn't been thrown out there yet. I thought about posting on the dog forum where I used to be a mod, but it's so inactive these days it's not even funny. The site admin and one or two other users get on and comment about once a month.

Anywho...the most recent pic of Bibbs, Middle Daughter's latest feral cat rescue. He is still terrified of the police scanner-TV with sound on-TV with sound off- podcasts-vacumn- dishwasher-toilet flushes -visitors with boots...well, you get the idea. Lots of things send him back under the sofa. At least, after the first 14 hours stuffed into the space between refrigerator and kitchen wall he will roam the first floor. Oddly, he has not yet figured out that in the wee hours of the morning the people and cat-mate Scrappy climb 2 sets of stairs to spend the night.
Still not litter box trained, he won't "go" anywhere but in a shallow ALDI's box with real dirt in it. And only single use. Yeah, he's a pain in the *kitten*, but he's been living in her yard for many years, sooooo....he's family.
Now that he's indoors he isn't incurring injuries protecting his territory, so no need to hit up the local drug dealers for bootleg antibiotics. Weird benefits of living near "the hood".
Middle Daughter used to play solitaire with recently deceased "Kitty-Kitty", and Bibbs seems to enjoy the game also.
Kitchen floor card games....
Not for my Catpuccino...turning cardboard into confetti is his hobby.
Oh hey delayed response.
Bibbs sounds a little like Bentley when we first brought him home. He quickly discovered all the places he could go to be left alone and don't even think about touching him. He learned over time that we weren't there to do him harm. We would do things like sit next to wherever he was hiding and read books to him softly. If he came along and touched one of us, we'd allow it to happen without trying to touch him, as that would surely result in a yell, possibly a snap and certainly a disappearing act.

@dawnbgethealthy - I hope it is not covid again for you and that you bounce back quickly!4 -
@Sinisterbarbie1 ..."cat furniture" !! Love it !! Catpuccino follows me around, sending mental messages..."make a lap, make a lap."5

@Stockholm_Andy ...thanks for the instructions. Computers are not my friends.
I grew up with rotary phones, party lines, and a Brownie box camera.
I'm laughing now, because of how many of you are going to "Google" to research those strange items.
Returning to my previously scheduled old age.6 -

I am laughing right there with you, do you remember how many pieces of penny candy you could get with a penny? Don't get me started on the party line hogs! Sheesh I spent time with relatives that still drew water from a well (stored in buckets on the back porch and community 'dipper') and used an outhouse.5 -
Well after that I do feel old. Today spent time sanding a ceiling for my last room paint. The laundry room which we have not painted ....ever!! WE have been in this house 27 years. Only room I never did. We did however put in a toilet and vanity so there is now a 1/2 bathroom in there along with a W/D and furnace.
AF last night but today we are making another venture out to lunch/dinner land.
I have been making some mocktails with..this will sound weird.....hybscus cold tea, grapefruit juice, simple syrup and diet tonic water. Throw in a few frozen berries and a fancy glass and poof. I can suck down 3 of those a night!7 -

We are excited to see where we get to too!
I know we will be driving through ID not sure about Montana yet. Our goal is to leave late enough in the spring so I don't have to white knuckle it over the passes. I do not want to have to buy chains for my car.4 -
@mfowler883 ...My heart hurts for you and Bentley.
Sounds like you are doing your best for him, and I'm sure he feels the love.6
