    @deepwoodslady - Interesting about your doctor's dietary recommendations. Did they explain their reasoning? Is there new research on insulin resistance? Is the theory that by avoiding carbs we are worsening the resistance?

    With me, I have a hard time not over-indulging in things like rice and bread. The only time I have felt satisfied when eating rice was my first week of work where I made pre-made meals...and I was no where near having the possibility of having seconds. Lol.

    Anyhow, I am interested in seeing your results!

    @BittersweetVita She mentioned that if my carbs were any lower than 190 I would risk going into Ketosis which she said is a horrible thing. That could cause acidketodosis (or something like that) which would lead to kidney failure. Her reasoning for low protein was also to protect the kidneys (hey, what about my muscles?), and the low fat was for heart/cholesterol (what's wrong with sticking to non-saturated healthy fats?). She mentioned that any carbs under 190-250 (and Intermittent fasting too) would put my body into a "starvation mode" which is very dangerous. She quoted science behind her theory, but there is good science behind lower carb for diabetics and also for Intermittent Fasting. It just depends what you read, truly. I know to choose lean proteins and healthy fats like olive oil, nuts, seeds etc. so I don't think her theory completely holds water. Blood sugars don't take weeks of observation when making changes. It will go too high right away if your are eating wrong (like mine did when she raised it), and it can go very low quickly if you wait too long to eat. I could clearly see that her plan was harmful to me and my glucose levels so I jumped ship.

    I will not say that her plan would not work for anyone, maybe it would. But when you are insulin resistant (common when diabetic 10-15 years or more) so your body doesn't use your insulin properly whether you've produced it or taken it will oral medications, your diet is all you have. I can't afford the carbs she expected because I cannot fight them. I wish I could. It would be much more satisfying when I am eating, but I don't have that luxury.

    02/20-194.0-(Trend Weight 195.1)- So the weight is going back down since my little hissy-fit binge the other day. I attribute that to my 1400 calorie plan that I’ve been using for months now. However, my blood sugars have SHOT WAY up since I started the dietician’s carb increase plan. This is EXACTLY what I expected! I know it’s only been a couple of days, but with blood sugars it only takes moments to know if it was okay for you, not days. Starting today, I will go back on my own plan of 1400 calories and 90g of carbs which I consider very generous, but very effective for glucose control. My last glucose reading before I started the dietician’s plan had been 134 proving my plan was really working for me. The last couple of days have been 275 or higher which is more than double! I’m in the midst of trying to prove to the endo that I don’t need insulin. The dietician’s plan would put me poking myself every single day! No more of this nonsense! I will continue to choose wisely and choose low glycemic foods when possible. But I will not go that high on the carbs. There is no one-size-fits-all when it comes to dietary matters.


    02/21-192.4-(Trend Weight 194.8)- A very nice drop on the scale now that I’m back on my own plan. I’ve pre-logged my meals for the day and have my indoor exercise plan in place. My goal today is also to make sure I get in my 250 hourly steps, get my 5 flights of stairs or more in and drink my water. I am feeling pretty good today. However, I was supposed to have 8 dead trees cut down today (tall skinny pines) but so far there is a no call/no show by the Tree Service Company. Tomorrow we are expecting 8.5 inches of snow so they were to beat the weather. I tried their phone number and text but it is restricted and I couldn’t get thru. I had a friend try and they can’t get through either so I’m assuming the settings on their phone is off and I’ve no other way to reach them. So typical for my rural area. Lots of unreliable people in our service industries. Very frustrating! I don’t know why they are not here. Anyway, on a good note – my fasting glucose this morning was 200 even. That is down from 276. I will tweak my macros accordingly but hat is a massive improvement already!

    101 Days of Weighing In ^^^^^ Nov 26, 2022 Starting Date

    My Name is Donna, Age 62. I am 5’5” tall & I live in Northern Michigan USA

    My mini-challenge is to lose 10 pounds by Easter 2023. I started my efforts on Dec. 10th weighing 198.4. My wish is to weigh 188.4 by Easter April 9th, 2023. That gives me about 4 months to lose 10 pounds. Sounds easy but, trust me, it won’t be. Especially when outside exercise is so limited for me this slippery time of year!

Of course, those who know me also know that I don’t consider myself truly in a new decade until I see the number 7 (in this case 187) because I bounce up & down by at least 3 pounds for quite awhile before I firmly land on anything. But to see myself closer this morning was THRILLING. Oh, how I would love to dip my toe into those waters by the end of the month! Glucose numbers improved all day yesterday and this morning although I did eat my dinner VERY VERY late last night which greatly affects it. However, I love all the numbers this morning as they are all greatly improved and I feel good. Today I will focus on water, I’m still not drinking enough and that does make my blood pressure a bit too low. My Easter weight goal is 188.4. Just 2.8 pounds away!!!!

    02/24-191.4-(Trend Weight 193.8)- I was very disappointed with the scale this morning. I immediately studied my food log yesterday and have some ideas. I was 117 calories under my calorie goal and 23 carbs over my carb goal. I did a major shopping immediately after seeing the dietician. I think I am trying to fit those foods into my macros in order to not waste them. My autistic son has severe eating disorders so he will not eat most of them. I just cannot waste! I think maybe I am trying to eat away the foods too quickly. Many of them will keep so I need to spread them out more. I am talking about the higher carb foods. I’m going to tweak my menus for sure. It doesn’t seem like 23 would be a lot over limit, but when I think in terms of percentages, it is over 25% higher than it should have been. Lots of realizations this morning! I know we’ve talked about how weight loss is not linear but it’s always so disappointing. My fasting glucose was 204 (which is still lower than with dietician) but is too high for my goals. I will definitely be tweaking and making the necessary changes. I know what to do and how to do it. The positive is that my trend weight is still going down and my other body measurements are going down too. Happy to see my chubby thighs getting smaller! Dr. Seuss would say “Oh the ups and downs!”.

After feeling how I out of shape I am after a spring training workout, I told my one co-worker that I need to cut back on the sweets because I need to get back in shape for coaching this spring. Our fellow co-worker is on vacation this week, and between her support and this break, I am going to get myself back on track.

    02/25-189.4-(Trend Weight 193.4)- I guess yesterday was busy preparing for today’s wonderful visit named Whoosh! When I stepped on the scale this morning, I could have cried. Fasting glucose down to 192-better but….still more work to do there. I’m pretty sure I know why this whoosh happened. More on that later. I always hope my insights can help others……

    Didn't think I was going to make my goal as this week's been a bit unsettled with guests over the weekend and air travel mid week but thankfully things worked out. I expect my losses to slow down now as I get into the groove and past the initial water weight whoosh.

    This week has gone by so fast! I've been feeling so fatigued lately, I don't know what's up but am thinking of making a doc appointment if it continues because I'm fed up with feeling slow and cold and down all the time. As predicted, I'm seeing my losses slow down now. I was trying to decide whether to adjust my weight loss goal for this challenge as I don't think 2lbs a week is realistic and I don't want to be demoralised by it, but I have decided to leave it as it is and see where I end up. If i lose 10lb rather than 15, that's still amazing!

    It's going slowly, but at least it's going! I think that at this point I really can't chance even one treat meal or slack day per week if I want to have any hope of losing 0.5 lbs a week. Not great for socialising!
    My energy levels are feeling a lot better. Probably a combination of sunny days, getting past my totm, going to the gym, cutting alcohol out entirely, partially switching back to caffeinated coffee, taking multi vitamins (I have got some vit D which I started taking yesterday along with vit B and magnesium plus a multi vit), drinking more water, and generally feeling more positive. Yay!
    I'm miles away from my weekly goals that I calculated based on a 2lb per week loss, hey ho. So it's going to take me 4 times as long to get to a healthy weight? Yikes. I should get there (143lbs) by my 43rd birthday at the end of August, so long as I stick at it...

    Finally seeing some decent progress, especially in the last few days. I have been drinking much more water and have begun strength training alongside cardio in the hope of stimulating my metabolism. I had my TSH levels checked, 4.09, so just within the normal range but something to keep an eye on. Feeling hopeful for the week ahead, the longer days are lifting my spirits!     It's been a positive week, I've been getting into a groove with my exercise habits, thanks in part to my new smart watch with lots of fun features providing motivation.
    I've also been tweaking my calories and macros so that I'm getting more fuel and protein as I'm concerned that I've been losing lots of muscle through having too low calories and too many carbs. Drinking tons of water too, so I'm feeling a lot more alert and healthy.
    A week and a bit left to go of this challenge, no chance of making my goal, which is a lesson for me in setting unrealistic targets! I'll be happy to finish the 100 having lost over 10lbs, but a little more would be nice too 😁
