5/23 - 1 wine - DH & I ran into town for DD & grandkid while her husband was out of town. Wonderful little "craft kitchen" restaurant d'Alba Garden Oaks with fun outdoor seating.

I love the look of that new place! In Houston you can probably sit out on a patio almost year round!
I grew up in Toronto where there were lots of patios, people would even sit outside in their coats in the winter lol. Alba looks like some of the patios in the Beaches region of Toronto. Your post has taken me down memory lane : - )4 -
@globalhiker
I am so relieved to hear that you have come up with a strategy that is working for you.
Yay!!!
Bust that stress.5 -
I am Dawn, I live in South Eastern British Columbia.
I joined this thread in November of 2018, a daily drinker at the time
My primary goal with drinking less is weight loss.
My usual goal is 16-20 AF days for the month,
I had 16AF days in April.
I do this diary style, I normally post the next morning.
Sunday May 21 - 3 drinks total. I had a Manhattan at 4pm and then went back into the yard for a couple of hours. I had 2 drinks around 8pm. Lots done in the yard, lots and lots still left to do. It rained overnight, so I was very happy to see that early this morning. The hose does not do the same job as a good rain : - )
Monday May 22 - AF - I went to work for a 4 hour shift and ended up working 9 hours straight through without a break (someone was sick). I had to use willpower to not come home after that and relax with a cocktail.
Tuesday May 23 - AF - It was super windy here yesterday, I had hoped to get a few more carrot seeds planted in a few locations where only a few of them took, but there is no way to plant very light carrot seeds with wind like that. Maybe today. Hoping the weather cooperates to get my tomatoes and peppers into the ground tomorrow.

2 weeks of no alcohol for me now…might not sound a lot to some but I am happy that I have managed to stay away from it when temptation has been put in front of me! This weekend is bank holiday in the UK and the weather has been amazing, more temptation on its way with gatherings and bbqs this weekend but I am really trying to be as positive as possible and already telling myself that I won’t spoil it. Does anyone else try non- alcohol drinks/beer?! Bit of a placebo, feel like your enjoying a drink without drinking!10
-
Oh and thank you for the welcome messages earlier…sorry only just seen them!5
-
@_mytime_ two weeks, two days, two hours. We all count our victories, large and small. Welcome aboard !!
Coors Edge, Heineken00 and ICE are my go-to subs for my favorite red wine. There are AF Craft beer "connie -sewers" here who can suggest so many great substitutes. Actually, there should be a "mocktail" recipie book compiled from the contributions from the posters on this site. Don't know how many of the US brands are available in the UK ??
But, IMHO, you should NEVER drink AF wine. Just donate the $$ to your local puppy rescue and pour a glass of tap water.. 🤢
@GaryM_25 ...I know your last post about the lost plastic in the Harley's oil tank was coming from a place of frustration...but I could not help but LOL..." I drank....A lot" ... SO SO many hugs for that !! We've all been there.
@Lilylady3k ...glad to see you back online. Sorry to hear about the health issues. May everything resolve to your benefit. As usual, your post has inspired me to new culinary challenges...years ago, you had me at "boudain quiche".
@dawnbgethealthy ...I admire your energy and perseverance with your garden. My Pittsburgh home came with a raised bed garden plot that was twice the size of your yard. After several years I simply gave up on green beans-broccoli-squashes-corn-peppers-carrots-tomatoes-and all that... The deer were beautiful, but hungry. But what really frosted my cookies were the #$@&^% GROUNDHOGS !!!!!!!!!!! Ahem. They are all God's creatures, no ?? Don't mean I have to feed them. If you ever get those tomato plants in...I can share my Grandmother's tomato marmalade recipie...
The Canadian wildfires have been hazing 'Da Burgh for weeks now. Kind of like when I lived in South Florida and the Sahara dust storms deposited orange sand everywhere, inside & out for months.
Must be much more intense up north...hope it ends very soon.
We all live together on a very small planet.

Something I've wanted to do for a long time...visit the "wooden road" in Pittsburgh. The entire length of the cul de sac is paved in wood. The houses and road were constructed between 1912-1914 ? Awesome brick homes with lovely iron fencing , huge trees, plantings that are obviously neighbor curated . Just a fairy tale scene.
Yes, my crazy Eldest Daughter & Middle Daughter took me there...had to be clowning for my camera...10 -
Hi everyone, I hope you're all doing well with your goals!
I'm still here in the background, I've just been reading a few books trying to absorb as much as possible. I revisited the first post of this thread and pawed my way through all the website links and book references. (@MissMay just a heads up, some of those website links are now dead unfortunately)
I spent a fair bit of time reading all the articles on the Alcohol Explained site, finding each article, even if the title didn't grab me, was worth a read. They answered questions that I'd forgotten I had.
So far I've read,
Alcohol Explained by William Porter (first 5 chapters can be read free)
Alcohol Lied To Me by Craig Beck
These two books alone have genuinely stopped my alcohol cravings. Something has definitely changed, perhaps now on a subconscious level, and it's exciting!
After these two books, a fire lit in my belly to go read more and more books, so off I went to read The Unexpected Joy of Being Sober by Catherine Gray, I enjoyed this one as well.
Currently I'm reading through, This Naked Mind: Control Alcohol, Find Freedom, Discover Happiness, & Change Your Life by Annie Grace, and came across a gem that I wanted to share here, which was,
"When we enjoy the "pleasure" of a drink, we restore the wholeness and peace of mind we knew our entire lives before we ever drank a drop."
- from This Naked Mind
My sister, who has been free from alcohol for over a year now, recently gave me The easy way to control alcohol by Allen Car. I've heard good things about this one, looking forward to it!
Thanks @MissMay for linking all these references!6 -
@Fursian all great selections, I’m now inspired by your post to read more of these gems. Thanks!
@globalhiker glad to hear you’ve found an eating plan and relaxing plan that works for you! I’m running too much and way too overscheduled. I need to back that way down. Sadly, no access to a hot tub!
I didn’t even try to be AF this month, but this past week I’ve only had one glass of wine per night, which is an improvement. I’ll take the win. Speaking of wins, I won my match yesterday! We are going to Districts! Yay!
Wedding and golf this weekend in Florida. I have to be very mindful of alcohol intake, especially in the heat!6 -
Hi All! Since joining this group Nov '22 I no longer drink on a daily basis. I'm drinking less for weight loss and overall health. I usually post the next morning.
Wed 5/24: AF - Not sure if I mentioned it before but we're in Florida making some progress on repairing damage from hurricane Ian. Our pool cage has been repaired, which makes Sport, our cat, very happy. Next up is landscaping. We lost trees and bushes. We have picked the tile color for a new roof but it will be months before that work gets started. We'll be heading back to Virginia mid-June for a couple months then plan come back to Florida. On top of this I have a new project at work that's keeping me really busy, so no workout. I've been doing better the second half of this month on the AF front and haven't been doing awful food-wise.

@forestdweller1
Boy oh boy do I enjoy your posts!
I spent a week in Pittsburgh way back when Sidney Crosby and Alexander Ovechkin were still young and tearing up the NHL. Yes, I went there to see them play against each other, but spent the rest of the week exploring "DaBurg". I really enjoyed it.
I only plant 2 regular tomatoes plants anymore, and 1 yellow cherry tomato which has been in for 3 weeks. Tomato marmalade sounds fantastic, but I tried canning a few times and I don't like it lol. Most of the tomatoes that I don't eat fresh will go into my fall cooking for the freezer containters: Jamalaya, chili, borscht, Gumbo etc. Years where I had too many tomatoes I also used to roast them with herbs from my garden and freeze them to put into stuff another day.
We had rain overnight which is great. Those tomatoes are going in over the next couple of days.
I have 36 pepper plants to go in also, but I am glad that I had to work instead of getting them in last night because they don't like wet feet, especially when they are getting transplanted. I am so glad that I didn't give in and plant those last two things during our heatwave, because the temps dropped 20 degrees since then and are due to go back up this coming weekend. Patience?7 -

Wednesday May 24 - 2 drinks. Early in my workday I was asked to work an extra shift in the evening. I did have a break in between and got some more garden work done. I had decided right at that time that I would have a couple of drinks after work. Planning AF for tonight.

5/24 - AF ; The side effects of insomnia and brain fog from the meds is really getting to me. I can’t even nap. So restless and wide awake! Spoke to the doctor today and he said after I finish day 16 I should be able to sleep soundly. I’m just on day 6!

@dawnbgethealthy ...Crosby is like fine wine, better with age ?? Oh, dear, an alcohol metaphor...When my stepson worked for a company that allowed him prime seats to the DC Capitals games, I was right there enjoying the action. 🏒
Canning is not my "thing" either...just cooking for one, so only made enough marmalade that would keep in the fridge til consumed. Tomatoes were about the only thing that the local wildlife did not molest. One of the local "handymen" is very fond of tomatoes, and I would be enjoying my morning coffee & see him wandering out of my yard noshing on a freshly picked beefsteak...Gotta love a guy who would dig you a trench, or shovel snow out of a block long alley. For fun.
Eldest Daughter's Shih Tzu would eat the cherry tomatoes she grew in her yard, very gently, right off the plant.
Maybe I'll try tomatoes again...really miss fried green tomatoes. And I might need a trench dug...
Eldest Daughter will be heading back to Louisiana in June, releasing my brake on alcohol consumption. Been a good month. Back to the attempted moderation. Really, really, really should exercise more, even just walking. At 76, with COPD [NO!! I NEVER DID SMOKE but everyone else in my life did] the old joke of walking barefoot in the snow uphill both ways to school is a reality. Everything here really IS uphill. Middle Daughter plotted out a while ago a route out of the 'hood so she could take me with her on the way to work & let me out so I could walk home [downhill] a couple blocks...4 blocks...a half mile...all the way from the cemetery...Now that I've said it "out loud" I should be shamed into actually doing it.
We'll see.
Can we get Mike to come out of hiding ?? Tell him I've adopted a squirrel ?? 🐿️

Checking in
Have been taking it easy as I shut my right hand in door at work and kind of crushed a few fingers. Typing is slow and still uncomfortable, I am sure it will get better.
Congrat to @sunnydaaz for your weight loss. That is amazing, you must feel like a million bucks!
@forestdweller1 that wooden road in Pitts is so cool, never got to see it when I lived out that way. Beautiful pic of your girls. And loved the kitty stand off photo.
Great to see you again @Lilylady3k sorry to hear of your health issues and all. Big hugs
@Fursian thanks for the heads up. I will plunk away at the links as I can, and delete the obsolete ones. The intro on page one was created by the OP before the thread was handed to me.
Almost the end of May.
Another major drinking three day weekend is now here.
For those needing extra support and accountability to keep the drink devil off your shoulder, this is the right place to be.
Have fun "drink smart"

OK... Had a good and bad week rather than stringing up another *great* week.
I drank two nights this week. It's the third conference I've been to in about five weeks. This morning the scale says I gained a couple pounds. I think that's mostly water from the travel.
Alcohol: Drank two days. This conference I know lots and lots of people and had to be much more social sun up to sun down.
Diet: Good, mostly. Not enough deficit for the week to be losing weight, but good enough. This conference was at a resort and every meal was eating what's out and they didn't really have good healthy choices.
Weights: Great workouts.
Cardio: Great workouts. I am so happy my plantar fasciitis is sufficiently managed.
Looking ahead, I think I'm working from home likely most of the rest of the summer. That'll make things MUCH easier.6 -
@forestdweller1
As usual, your post put a giggle into me.
You sure do have a way with writing.
Definitely I will try the tomato marmalade if I don't have to boil jars and stuff : - )
I haven't known dogs to like tomatoes, you painted such a good picture of the little dog gently eating cherry tomatoes right off of the plant : - )
Pitts is all hills, it seems that you have to climb a hill just to get into any house. I have been a few places in my life like that. We have a town, Nelson, a few hours from here that is also all hills. When people express desire to retire over there I think to myself that they will never get out for a walk again.6 -

Thursday May 25 - AF - Felt like having drinks, like usual, just didn't. I figure that I am a daily drinker who just doesn't drink daily anymore. AF or A plans for the weekend? Not sure yet. I plan to get my tomato plants and pepper plants into the ground over the next couple of days. Accomplishment and getting dirty and sweaty seems to be one of my triggers for drinks.

Goals for MaySelf-care and positive vibes!
Zig-zag calorie count - Daily Average 1400
Success = No more than two glasses of wine per night.
Current Streak - AF = 0 ~
5/25 ~ 🍷🍷The scale kept playing the yo/yo game with me and left me frustrated. My thoughts were if I'm not going to see great progress and it's going to be "this" slow, I might as well factor in my wine. So i did. I didn't say my thoughts were rational. My goal is to get through this weekend without a gain and then regroup next week after the holiday. Target Tuesday AF again.
@lilylady3k ~ Welcome back and prayers that your health makes a turn for the good! I can only imagine the exhaustion you must feel.Ditched the fasting and eating 4x a day, just small meals with lots of nutrients.
@_mytime_ ~ I use ICE with low calorie (5) juice in a wine glass as my wine substitute. The NA wines do nothing for me. oh, I just saw what @forestdweller1 said about NA Wines. I second, third and forth!
@GaryM_25 ~ Congrats on making it through your challenging week. How's the Harley?
The Month recap to stay accountable5/1 AF ~ Yipee! 💚 - Finished April with 3 days straight AF! I changed a lot of things in the past couple of weeks - I'm not sure which one is working or if it's the combination. I lost 9lbs in April. I can't tell you the last time that happened. April 1 to April 15 - 3lbs, April 16 to April 30 - 6 lbs!!!My 2023 Stats...
5/2 A ~ 🍷🍷🍷'eh. 1:1 for May but did string a few days in a row. I plan to be AF today and Thursday. Friday is Cinco de Mayo and my husband is already talking about Mexican so there might be a margarita or two.
5/3 AF ~ Yippee! 💚There's this window when I get home from work. About 30 minutes after my arrival for about an hour... If I get past that point, I'm usually ok. When there's nothing really stressing me, then it seems to be just habit for me.
5/4 AF ~ Yippee 💚 Today is Cinco De Mayo. Husband wants Mexican food and Margaritas. 😲😮🤭. I've already plugged planned food/drink into MFP and its going to be a tough one but I'm going to try to stay at my calorie budget. I have a salad planned for lunch which comes in at 300 calories. That leaves me plenty of room for a (one) margarita and a chicken taco meal. That leaves me with 45 calories to spare. Oops, forgot the chips and guacamole. 🤞🏽 I think I will go for an extra walk at lunch today!🙂

5/7 A ~ 🍷🍷
5/8 A ~🍷🍷 Need to get back on track today after a long, fun weekend full of drinks and food! Friday was Cinco de Mayo. Tried hard to make those calories fit within budget and have only 1 margarita #fail. Went to the Zoo on Saturday and walked around for 4 + hours with family (Grandson). It was a cool, wet and rainy day so the animals were VERY active. Usually they are just lying around asleep. After all that walking, we stopped at the Granite City Brewery. Had a burger to die for and a glass of wine. Came home to watch the Kentucky Derby and had a few cocktails. Sunday was back to a "normal" kind of day. Spent the morning cutting bushes and pulling weeds, then relaxed in the evening cooking on the grill (it was beautiful outside) and a couple glasses of wine. Today should be AF for sure and back on calorie budget! Update: Calories ok, but had wine.
5/9 A ~ 🍷🍷Long day yesterday. Husband had knee replacement surgery and I didn't plan very well for "me". Was hungry most of the day, only remedied by snacks. Couldn't bring outside food into the waiting room and they only had snacks and I didn't want to leave the area in case their were updates.
5/10 A ~🍷🍷 Another long day yesterday. The hospital is 1.5 hours away from home (he wanted a specific doctor) so another 3+ hours driving and they kept him another night. I did better with food choices but still over budget. The "all or none" in me is looking at a Sunday reset.
5/11 A ~🍷🍷🍷Yet another long day. So about 6 years ago, I use to commute to work 90 minutes each way, 5 days a week. After making a similar drive for three days in a row, I don't know how I managed. I guess you gotta do what you gotta do....
It was a stressful day. Husband was released🙂 but really not mobile at all. He "sort of" fell while getting into the car. I say "sort of" as the car broke his fall, he ended up sitting on the car floor. Someone eventually came out to help get him in the seat. We drove home. Took him over an hour to get from the car to inside the house. Once inside, he "thought" he was going to climb the 15 stairs to get to our bedroom. I said, nope, nadda, not going to happen. I said pick a couch or you can sleep in the recliner in the TV room and "maybe" we will try again tomorrow.
Then I cooked dinner and had wine!! Today I'm making him walk through the house every 60 to 90 minutes.
5/12 A ~🍷🍷🍷
5/13 A ~🍷🍷🍷
5/14 A ~🍷🍷🍷Mother's Day. I splurged with cheese and crackers and a chocolate flavored wine. Now it's time to get back on the plan - both for eating and drinking. I did make this instant pot pepper steak for dinner yesterday. It was actually pretty good and serving was under 350 calories, then add rice. I was going to serve over cauliflower rice, next time.
5/15 A ~ 🍷🍷🍷
5/16 AF ~ Yippee 💚
5/16 A ~ I thought the mind game prediction would help. It didn't. I'm going to start wearing ear buds when I get home. It's now been a full week since my husband's surgery. I don't discount that he has pain but the yelling is driving me nuts. Each time he yells, and he yells a lot, I panic and think that he's fallen or something. Somehow, I'm thinking, when I'm at work and he's alone, he's not screaming bloody murder. #andthistooshallpass. I am going to focus on being AF tonight, screams or no screams. I want to balance this month out.
5/17 AF ~ Yippee 💚 Success! Yesterday was good. Within calorie range, still a little short on water, but no alcohol! But, although a great day all around, the scale didn't show it and in fact, showed a gain. That was a little frustrating this morning ..... Gotta turn this ship around!!
So what did I do..went to Amazon and bought a new scale! (I did but not solely for that reason). I found one that tracks more metrics and I also bought a digital tape measure (I love gadgets). Keeping the focus!
5/18 AF ~ Yippee 💚 Happy with AF day but still frustrated with the scale. It was another good day. Got my water in (65oz), went for an additional 40 minute walk at lunch (16,653 steps for the day). Slightly over on calorie count but it was my low calorie day. Target 1050 - came in at 1326 (still good as far as I'm concerned). I am going to start tracking measurements so see if there's any changes elsewhere to help boost my morale!
5/19 AF ~ Yippee 💚 Three day streak -
5/20 ~ 🍷🍷🍷 Made it 3 AF 💚💚💚in a row, then planned to drink yesterday. No plans to drink today through Thursday (we shall see how it goes). Feeling pretty positive for the week on deck.

I will hit 40 days AF tomorrow! Almost half way on my 90 day project...though at this point I could see this going much longer and into perpetuity, who knows. But right now, I'm crushing my nutrition, crushing it in the weight room, really enjoying all of my other outdoor recreation just being clear headed and present in the moment...and probably right now the biggest thing is just crushing it at the office. This time of year is a pressure cooker for me and I usually come out the other end of this pretty haggard and exhausted...looking for retirement options or another job, etc, but I'm slaying the deadlines and rocking the *kitten* out of this busy season. We're so far ahead of schedule right now that next month might just be a cake walk.8

Nice!! Congrats on your successes!!!4 -
My world has flipped around, upside-down and then some the past few weeks. Layoff situation and started hitting the pinot grigio today. Rats! I will spare the details and say this:
What life has taught me this week: 1) dial back the speed when you need to, 2) stress-management is VERY mandatory, no excuses and alcohol is not a routine replacement for stress management, 3) be wonderful to yourself first before being everything to others.
I did weights and hot tub afterwards today. Mine is in-ground and uses salt water so it does have a therapeutic effect. I will say I sleep way better, hardly wake up at night, and have had zero hot flashes past 2 weeks, so it's a win!. Above-ground hot tubs with are WAY better than mine so I highly recommend one if you are in the market. I wish I had an above-ground one.
I am also focusing on drinking 64 ounces of water daily. Noticing it's helping my skin and hair.
Holiday weekend is here - I am challenging myself to be AF at least one day this weekend and then be really mindful of intake and be wonderful to myself.
I hope you all are wonderful to yourselves and have a great weekend!

Greetings! I have been partaking in this LA thread since June of ‘22 and it has made such a huge difference in my life. I have met some very kind and smart people on here and hope to continue to be 99% AF.
Thinking of May goals overwhelms me, there’s so much to do, so I’m just going to keep it simple:
99% AF
Weight loss of 4-5 pounds
Get moving
5/1-5/26- AF
Really struggling but finding it easy to be AF. I plan to hide under the covers all weekend with the cats. Maybe when I come up for air my outlook will be better.
Love reading all the updates!10 -
@globalhiker
Oh no! Sorry to hear about your work stress.
Your coping mechanisms seem to be sound, hot tub time and all.
I didn't think that your hair could get any shinier! Geez, it must be blinding : - )
Take care of you. Big hugs.4 -
I am Dawn, I live in South Eastern British Columbia.
I joined this thread in November of 2018, a daily drinker at the time
My primary goal with drinking less is weight loss.
My usual goal is 16-20 AF days for the month,
I had 16AF days in April.
I do this diary style, I normally post the next morning.
Friday May 26 - Drinks. I may have drinks today, Saturday, also. The day will be a continuation of planting : - )
Rolling total - 15AF day out of 26 days.5 -
I have been behind on current happenings here for several days so it’s nice to catch up this morning. Good to read all the updates and hear how you all are doing.
Had my planned wine this week plus one extra day while on vacation. Being out of my daily element and routine was also a bit challenging with all the eating out at many good restaurants. Did manage to make good food choices there. I am so ready for AF this weekend and then we roll into June.
May you make time for some type of self care this weekend to help support your personal AF goals.
What are your plans to do so? I will sit quietly before I start each day and create an intention to carry me into the day.
Today I will “prosper and enjoy good health.”
My stats for May:
A-10
AF - 16
May goal - 22-23 AF days6 -
Vacation!
Goal: Enjoy alcohol responsibility and not have a hangover! Try some mocktails .
Plus drink more water between drinks throughout the day!7 -
Today we are having a pre summer family barbecue here with my adult kids and grandchildren. Already suggested we will not be serving alcohol - I will be making fruit infused water in a pitcher with mint, cucumber, lime, and strawberries. Also have sparkling water and teas. All of us are doing LA so I want to support our efforts even if it’s a holiday weekend. This is a new behavior for me as in the past I would have a selection of wines and beer.
Today’s intention: I will be a good example to my family.
Stats for May:
A-10
AF - 17
May goal - 22-23 AF days9
