SEPTEMBER 2023 Monthly Running Challenge
WARNING: Following this thread may be addictive; it gets very talkative...miss a day and you can be 50 posts behind. This is the most popular challenge on MFP. If you found us in the middle (or end) of the month, you're still very welcome to join in - no requirements or special invite needed. Once you post, that's it you're in. And yes, we do this every month.
You set your own pace and distance for the month. We will all be doing it together. This is your virtual running group to help keep you accountable, to enjoy a virtual post-run coffee with your fellow runners, and to make new friends and learn a few things.
This is a continuation from the August 2023 Monthly Running Challenge which can be found at:
https://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/10896155/august-2023-monthly-running-challenge/p1
Anyone can join in, new and old, and if you found this thread late, you can join in at any time.
We have members ranging from total beginners all the way to Boston Qualifiers and beyond. We are a friendly and encouraging bunch. You never need to be ashamed of your miles. If you are making the effort, you will find only support here.
Here are the details from last month that apply again:
Anybody want to join in for a running challenge? Set a goal here and update us every day. OPTIONAL: You can post your progress by creating a ticker at http://www.tickerfactory.com (if creating one seems difficult, or you're like me and can't be bothered, then just type in your daily miles in this thread).
You can run, walk, or do treadmill - just be consistent. Don't let the high (or low) goals of others intimidate you. Some do 25 miles, others do 50, some go higher than that, some do lower; it's entirely your goal and therefore completely up to you. We help motivate each other, so what do you say? If you're new to running, set a low goal. If you're from a part of the world where miles aren't your thing, log your distances in KMs. And if you'd rather log your progress by time rather than distance, then you're entirely free to do that as well.
Feel free to set your goal now but wait until July 1, 2023 to start logging your runs!
Also, don't forget to join our group which can be found at:
https://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/group/21182-monthly-running-challenges
Bookmark the previous and past challenges: https://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/10393468/current-past-challenges#latest
Find a small group of runners that encourage and offer food support:
https://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/10573619/runners-that-need-some-nutritional-accountability#latest
Note: we also have a group on Strava and Facebook.
After you run, come into this thread and post what you did (don't forget to hit the bookmark in the upper right corner to bookmark this thread). Simply keep a running tally of what you've done this month and interact with the others. Many folks come in here and chit-chat it up, even on their rest days or while recouping from injury. This is a very social group and we talk about many things (sometimes even about running). It's a very friendly bunch here so don't be afraid to say hi (even if this is your first time), talk about a recent or up-coming race, ask questions, provide answers, or just lurk-n-learn. Participation is what makes this group successful.
Not quite sure how to log your runs? Follow the examples of many other challenge members. Even take a peek at last month's thread (posted above).
*******OPTIONAL TICKER*************
Info on tickers since I know there will be questions. Sign up for an account at http://www.tickerfactory.comandcreate your ticker. Then you need to update it after you finish a run and post it here. Here is what you will need to do.
After setting up your ticker, you will need to make note of the weblink they give you so you can return. An example would be:
http://www.tickerfactory.com/exercise/w6K1EiX/ <<<< the last part will be a part of the image link (explained below) that will be supplied to you after you initially create your link.
When you return to TickerFactory with the weblink, go to your settings page. Make sure you type your PIN in that you set when you created your ticker account. Then, where it says "Your current cumulative value", there is an add button. Simply add the distance that you just did, and the cumulative value automatically changes. Then hit next.
After adding your new miles (or KMs) to your ticker, you need to post it here.
After you hit next, it will give you a bunch of codes suggesting how to display your ticker.
Use the one at the bottom where it says Direct Image URL:
It will look something like:
http://tickers.TickerFactory.com/ezt/t/w6K1EiX/exercise.png
To display that correctly in your post, make sure you place the image (img) tags around that link. So it will look something like the following (but removing the spaces in the img tags):
[ img ] http://tickers.TickerFactory.com/ezt/t/w6K1EiX/exercise.png [ /img ]
^^^^^^^ Don't forget to remove the spaces between the brackets ^^^^^^^^^^
Some key things to pay attention to when posting your ticker:
Use the link that ends in .png
Remember the [ img] and [ /img] tags go in between the link
Remove the spaces in the img tags before posting
YES, there is a / in the second /img tag
By the way, everyone here should consider themselves a runner no matter how fast or slow. There's no judgment, we all started somewhere. And no comparisons, except with your former self. Don't compare your Chapter 1 to somebody else’s Chapter 20.

You may see some phrases / words that are unique to our little group when it comes to describing some of our runs. It is a mash-up of words that seem to best describe the way the run felt that day. Here are some examples. Feel free to come up with your own to add to the dictionary 😃

'sneasy' - Slow Not Easy
'scrappy' - mix of Slow and Crappy

In for 125 miles. Thanks for setting this up, @AlphaHowls !10

Thanks @AlphaHowls for getting this all set up! You know because you set it up you get to be 1st to set your goal 😊
I am not setting an actual goal other than hoping to be able to walk as often as possible and maybe get over 20 miles.

Thanks for setting us up @AlphaHowls!
Have to put down 170 again, but actually only need to average 134 for the next 4 months to reach my RTY goal. Here's to over achievement! 😁11 -
Thanks @AlphaHowls
@tarun_yadavA @Scott6255 you guys are scary.
As usual my goal is to follow the plan, stay injury free and do the damn strength training. I'm one month into a 3 month training cycle and already tired plus I'm gaining weight (damn runger) but having a blast 🙂10 -
My goal is once again 160km, but to prioritise staying injury free above all else- so prioritising sleep and recovery. Yes, and to work more strength training back into the mix.9
-
Thanks for setting us up this month @AlphaHowls.
I'm setting my goal at 85 miles. I have a 3-day backpacking trip in the Great Smoky Mountains so that's at least one weekend that I will not have any running miles.11 -
Thanks for getting the September thread going @AlphaHowls
My target for this month is going backwards down to 70 miles from 80. I have a training plan for a HM in October and there is a certain amount of tapering in here. I have even added a couple of runs to suit my longer term goal to make it up to 70.
Happy September everyone!9 -
Morning all
Got in 5 1/3 (08"59) to kickstart the month!
I do want to see if I can make it to 42 for my streak... But also, body sure does feel like it needs a Rest day. Might be tomorrow. Will see (off with cousin from States and my buddies to Brewery for IPAs and wings tonight... And see where the night goes!). So maybe too hungover tomorrow and might skip it. And have a Bacon-Egg McMuffin from McDonalds instead lol10 -
September 1 – 5.17 miles
The temperature was a nice 59F at 5:00 am this morning. My pace was about a minute/mile faster than normal and it didn’t feel like I put forth any extra effort. I was running with one of my faster friends so maybe I was distracted trying to keep up.
@AlphaHowls – I bet you can find some good bargains on shoes this weekend. I think it’s time!
That is an interesting pool @polskagirl01. On another subject, do you like to work puzzles? Can’t wait to see your painting!

Great run @Teresa502 .
Thanks for setting this up @AlphaHowls ! I am going to stick with a goal of 80 miles total of running and fast walking. Seems like I am just eking that amount out at the end.

Goal 400 miles, going to push for 500. I just crossed 4002 this morning which puts me really close to making 6000 for the year if I keep pushing.
9/1 17.18 miles, 1950 days on the run, 1132 days HM+ Streak
B/P 98/78 at doctor, 119/88 at home
Weight 118.4 lbs
Got up @ 2:50 AM to get on the run. Chilly, but sleeves help, still lost fine motor function over time. 60ish °F
Made it to my doctor check up on time, fasting.
Blood pressure running a little low, but I did not feel anything.
Day 11 of no headache! Mouth Guard seems to be helping. I had to be fitted for a mouth guard to see if it would help ease some of the violent headaches I was having.
Welcome to September!

Courtney Dauwalter goes for not only her third major 100 mile win in a row, but third course setting record in a row...in a short span of 71 days!
In late June she set the women's course record for Western States 100 in a time of 15:29:34, beating the former record time by 1hr, 18 minutes
In mid July she set the women's counter-clockwise course record at the Hardrock 100 in a time of 26:14:12, beating the former record time by 1hr, 4min. (She set the clockwise course record last year).
I had the wonderful experience of running alongside Courtney and her mom at the Superior Fall 50 Mile race last fall. Courtney is such a humble, positive, wonderful person. No better ambassador for the sport. It was definitely a highlight of my race. For this race she was running with her mom as her mom tried to finish her first trail ultramarathon. Unfortunately her mom DNF'd.
And yes, I am a Courtney Dauwalter fanboy.8 -

I'm a huge Courtney Dauwalter fan also. Is that called a girl crush? @shanaber has a friend who ran one of those races with her.

@AlphaHowls glad to hear the mouth guard is working to help with your headaches!
@7lenny7 that is very cool that you got to run with Courtney Dauwalter. I bet that was awesome.
🤦♂️ Doh! I posted this on the August thread by mistake this morning.
7.3 miles this morning. Took my Kinvaras out to the road for more than a few miles for the first time. For whatever reason, they felt SO MUCH better than they have before. They felt light and quiet. I was pleasantly surprised 😁

I'm in for 100 miles again. I don't really have a plan yet for this month. My HM is next weekend. As of now the potential wonderful weather isn't materializing so I won't be tempted to try to race it. Plan is to run it, have fun, bit not push too hard. That should mean minimal recovery time then back on it.
Those of you who are on Strava probably saw this already but my watch bricked yesterday. I've had it for 4 years and wear it all the time so I feel like it had a good life. I have ordered a forerunner 625s and it's on the way! I might try out the adaptive Garmin plans for fall training this year. Mix it up a bit.8 -

Hello everyone!
I got in an 8.2km run this morning to start the month. It was the first day since spring that I wore a long shirt, but otherwise the run was uneventful. I am starting to get a bit nervous about the race tomorrow. It rained all afternoon/evening, so fingers crossed that will be done by tomorrow morning.

01.09 Tue 23°C 5.0km 47min 9:20/km
5.00km/80.5km
I'm on summer vacation. This run was after a whole day traveling, a whole day exploring, and two nights of not so great sleep (and too much wine). And still lots of flight waterweight everywhere. I also forgot to wear my compressive socks which help with blood pooling. Basically, it was a total fail despite a lovely flat route along the sea. Not sure how many more runs I'll do until the middle of the run as I'll be in a hilltop village for the rest of my trip, and I just can't run uphill at all.8 -

@Laurz9191 you've got this! And I'm wildly jealous of the long shirt, still way too hot here!1
