I thought running or walking against traffic (in the absence of sidewalks of course), was required by law in most places 🤔 I could be wrong. Riding a bike is another story, as they usually need to follow traffic laws and ride with traffic.4

I have found that the crazy drivers can see me easier if I run closer to the middle of the road (there isn't a lot of traffic) and make sure I am seen before moving over into the other lane or getting off the road. Even if I wear my headphones, I also make sure I can hear traffic. I would never run with traffic on these crooked roads. That would be so dangerous.5

It's race day! It is actively raining and the race starts in about 1 hour. Luckily I'm at a hotel directly across the street, so I will get ready and then wait until the last possible minute to leave. It looks like it's supposed to rain until about 15 minutes before the start and then we should be clear for the rest of the morning.10

I have a bad right knee. I run with traffic but I also wear really bright flashers and I use one ear bud only so I can hear easier. It's part of the reason I don't do races. If I run against traffic and my right leg is higher my knee goes south really quickly. The one time I got glancing swiped by a truck was when my flashers had unknowingly dimmed and he turned left into me as I was crossing in a school zone crosswalk. sigh. I dove out of the way and it only touched me but he did not even know he (or she) hit me and I was ok. Nothing to do with what side of the road. More dangerous to me are the people backing up out of their driveways (and it's scary for me backing out too). ALtho a lot of the newer cars have that sideways option which warns you of cross traffic and mine will warn me of pedestrians also. The one time I almost hit a runner was when I had stopped at a stop sign and they were running across in front of me. They were right in the pillar zone of my windshield left front window and completely out of my sight. It was daylight and luckily I did my normal 3rd check and stopped. But usually I try to make eye contact or hand signals with cars before I ever go in front of them.
Good Luck on the race today @Martaindale5 -

It went all through her house (husband and two teen boys), Fear that the flu vaccine did not match this year, so tells me to be as careful as I can. Really anxious, waiting for COVID vaccine to hurry up and come out. Many of my clients have been out sick as well.7 -

I ran 5 miles on our local trail this morning. Attended a local music festival and didn’t get home until midnight last night. Heading back to it shortly for another round.
@yirara – The slant on the road can definitely mess with your stride and cause injury.
@martaindale – Hope it stopped raining for at least the beginning of the race. Rain isn’t so bad once you have been running a while but starting in it (and waiting for a race to start) is hard.Don't you hate it when you have something on your mouth and no one tells you?9 -

I was thinking the same thing. I imagine starting and running most of a hot dry race, it might actually be nice to have a very light rain toward the end of it.

Got out and did 10 miles this morning. Still waiting on the cold front. I kept running toward the thunder and lightning hoping to get rained on, but didn't get a drop. Maybe Monday.

Got back from the race a little while ago. My son came with me and we had chairs to sit in while we played percussion instruments and cheered the runners on. I did "a lot for me" of walking - my step count today is more than 3x what I've been averaging. 😬
I was disappointed because the one girl from run club who was signed up, had been told that another girl would be coming to walk it with her (fast walk with a little jogging, to do 10k within the 90 minute cutoff) - and yet the race started and I saw her go by, at the end and alone. I still don't get what happened with the other girl; she just didn't show up. At the 5k turnaround, my friend was still at the end as expected, but there were 2 other ladies with her. Meanwhile another guy from the club had already finished the 10k and was under 40 minutes for a PR. But I was waiting at my cheering spot until the very end, even though everyone around me was leaving. But when I saw the final car off in the distance, my friend was again all alone, right in front of it. I told my son to quickly pack up the chairs and instruments back into my bag, we were going to walk her in to the finish line - maybe 1/2 a kilometer away. This involved a fast march and some jogging, with a full backpack, a tambourine in one hand and long-covid dizziness setting in at the end. (Don't worry, I went off to the side at the very end and didn't go through the finish line.) But I think it was worth it to encourage her for that last little bit. So I came straight home, grabbed some snacks and went to lay down with my "moon boots" (pressure therapy). Hydrating, doing all the things and hoping for some good sleep and to wake up feeling fine.10 -
Sept total: 35.3/100 miles
9/2: 8 miles
9/4: 4.3 miles
9/5: 3 miles
9/6: 3.9 miles
9/8: 3 miles
9/9: 13.1 miles
The race was really well organized, better than many races I have done that were a lot larger. You can tell the community puts a lot of effort into the entire weekend. The course winds through rural Pennsylvania Amish countryside along two lane country roads. There are corn fields, rolling hills, and lots of community volunteers manning water stations.
Afterwards there was a community picnic with BBQ chicken, brats/hot dogs with fixins, and homemade desserts. The best post-race meal I've ever had.
After eating, I went back to the hotel, took a shower, made a food run for later, and I'm chilling out watching movies for the rest of the day.
Race report under the spoilerBird-in-hand HM sort of race report. It was raining when I woke up. I waited until about 30 minutes before the start to head over because I stayed at the hotel across the street. By then, the rain stopped. It was warmer than I would have liked, but slightly cooler than it has been back home. It was about 69F at the start and probably close to 80F by the time I finished.
We started at 7:30 sharp. As usual, people went out too fast. I positioned myself just ahead of the 2:20 pacer figuring that's probably where I would end up. I got passed by what felt like half of the field in those first few miles including quite a few people who were already huffing and puffing. The middle miles of the race were pretty hilly. Though there were only a couple that were very steep, there were very few sections of the course that were truly flat. I tried to moderate my effort up the hills then relax and let gravity do the work on the way down. I walked the aid stations, making sure to drink plenty of water and dump some on my head. I took salt tabs regularly. I could tell they were helping because a couple of times I got a little nauseated and within a couple of minutes of taking one, I felt totally fine.
By mile 8 or so, people were fading. I started passing up folks who flew past me in the first few miles. I felt strong as I finished, even had a little in the tank to turn it up the last half mile or so.
I finished in 2:20:16, just ahead of the 2:20 pacer. A long way from my PR but about where I expected to be at this point in the year given the conditions. In fact, I'm pretty happy with how it went and hopeful that the base I built over the summer will reward me with some speed when I start training for my A race.8 -
Great job @martaindale!1

Very well done @martaindale. You ran a smart race!3

I ran 2 miles this morning. I ran to the cemetery and ran around in there a bit. I saw another runner and a woman stretching. The cemetery is really a nice place to run. There are paved roads and rarely any cars. It is an old cemetery too and there are lots of interesting headstones from the 1800's. But that was the first time I have seen another runner in there. When I do run on the roads, I always run facing traffic. I think that is the legal way to run or walk. Plus it is safer. I live in a small town with a population of around 5000 so we don't have much traffic. It was still hot, but not too bad for a short run. Still looking forward to the cold front next week.
That was so nice of you to finish the race with your friend @polskagirl01. I bet that really meant a lot to her.
Great job on your race @martaindale! I'm glad the weather was good.

My day didn't turn out as expected. Mom and I went over to a neighbor's yard sale today. I expected to only stay about an hour, but we wound up staying 4 hours, visiting with them and talking with the people who stopped by. It was fun, just not what I had planned on doing.
I was tired when I got home, so laid down on the couch for a nap. Once I got up, I had to force myself to go down for my scheduled workout on the treadmill. I really wasn't feeling it and had to tell myself if I did one mile, I was good.
The schedule called for an easy pace 6 mile run. I figure as long as I traverse the mileage, I'm doing good. I walked a mile total for warm up and cool down. Then, I did a run/walk of 5 miles total. I did 3 x (4/1 min at 4.2/3.8 mph), 3 x (4/1 min at 4.5/3.8 mph), then 6 x (2/3 mph at 3.8/4.5 mph), 2 x (2/3 min at 3.8/4.2 mph) and finished at 4.2 mph...at least I think that is what I did. Close enough. It really didn't feel too bad, but my legs were getting tired. I was glad I did it once I finished.7 -
Thanks @Scott6255 . Great job on your treadmill run and your outdoor run this morning.
@kgirlhart Thanks, I guess. Sometimes you just gotta do what needs to be done when the weather is right and you have time. LOL Great running. I think foxes are pretty. Hope it cools down for you next week. We had a storm come through earlier and it is now 68F...muggy, but cool.
@tarun_yadavA Nice run in the heat. I hope you enjoyed your day of watching TV.
Great running @AlphaHowls ! I hope you don't get sick.
Great running @Teresa502 ! Love the cow picture/meme.
Wow @polskagirl01 ! That was a lot for you and so sweet to walk with the girl from the run club to the finish. I'm sure she appreciated it. I hope you are okay tomorrow.
Congratulations @martaindale ! Sounds like a great race and love the sound of the community picnic afterwards. That is an awesome time in my book.
Nice run @kgirlhart . I never really thought of running in a cemetery before, but we have one in the county that has paved road and would probably be a great place to run as long as a funeral wasn't being held.

Sound like a great race @martaindale and well ran by you. My taste buds are shouting at me reading about the post race meal. Many, belated, happy returns to you and @Laurz9191.
Not sure I would be so keen to run on my birthday, I would spill my beer. Yesterday I ran the parkrun with a gentleman celebrating his 83rd birthday, and yes, he was running at the same pace as me.martaindale wrote: »I got passed by what felt like half of the field in those first few miles including quite a few people who were already huffing and puffing.
How is the toe @Mari33a ?
Nothing you can do about the bugs @chris_in_cal except treat them as extra protein
Very dull on my side, following the plan. I guess that is good. My daughter has come home for the weekend so that is eating out and ice cream added to the agenda. Going on a small boat next week so the plan might need to be improvised, unless paddling counts. Everywhere is still hot though I am not going to complain as it is better than the rain. Hope every one is have a good September so far.

@TheMrWobbly Dull and following the plan is great when it comes to running. Enjoy the time with your daughter and paddling definitely counts.
Great job in the heat again @tarun_yadavA . Enjoy another TV day. btw, I did not get a chance to watch the tennis match, and probably won't today either.4 -

-
@martaindale Great job on your race! It sounds like it was a great race and nice experience! Your medal looks really cool too!
I am sticking to my watch’s taper for the marathon plan as best I can till next Sunday. Today it wanted me to do some sprinting, so I did (or tried to at least) and ended up running 9.5km. It’s really quite hot here again so we spent the afternoon at the very full but still fun pool, giving the summer one last hurrah. Not a bad way to spend a Sunday .
61.3/160km for September so far .6 -
A nice sunday at the bay. Some traces of the end of summer.. breezy and cooler.
My sleep has been off and I can feel it in my energy...time to tighten that part up.

Did one mile walk on the driveway after church, helping with a fundraiser, and taking a Sunday afternoon nap. Nothing exciting, except the temperatures. It was only 77F (25C) at 5:30 PM. It's supposed to be in the upper 40's for lows later next week. Not sure I'm ready for it to be that cool already. Fall is in the air.6 -

I ran 11 miles this morning. I actually got up pretty early this morning so I could beat the heat. But when I got up I realized there were thunderstorms in the area so I had to wait until the lightening moved away before I could run. So it was about 8:45 before I finally headed out. I ran to the cemetery which is about half a mile south of my house and then headed to the park which is about half a mile west. I was staying close to home in case there were more scattered thunderstorms. I was near the park when I when I heard thunder and saw lightening. I ran back home and waited about 15 minutes to make sure it wasn't getting closer. Then I headed back out. It was about 75°F but it was humid. When I got back to the park I was at 3 miles. Around 6 miles in it started raining and rained for about a mile or so. I heard some thunder rumbling, but didn't see the lightening. It was south of town and not headed our way. And I was heading home. By the time I got there the rain had ended and the skies were clearing.

@kgirlhart I also am sure I would have taken the thunder as a “sign” that I should call it a day, as @chris_in_cal said . Good job motivating yourself to go out again!
I had an uneventful but pleasant run this morning. I’m really trying not to overdo it and stick to the plan, so only 6.5km - but they were nice ones. 67.9/160km for September.6 -
September 1 – 5.17 miles
September 2 – 8.03 miles (5 road/3 trail)
September 4 – 9.01 miles (trail)
September 5 – 5.01 miles
September 7 – 5.24 miles
September 8 – 7.02 miles
September 9 – 5.01 miles (trail)
September 11 – 5.29 miles
Total 49.78 miles/ Goal 85 miles
I got in 5 miles before work this morning. Temp was a nice 64F.
@polskagirl01 – That was extremely kind of you to jump in and encourage that girl by walking with her in the race. You are awesome and I bet you and your son made a great cheering section!
@martaindale – You managed that half marathon so well! Great finish! I’m sure your hill country running was good training for the hills. Glad the race was well organized and the finish line food sounds amazing. I ran an Amish half marathon in Ohio once and they had pie at the finish line. Kept me motivated the whole race!
@kgirlhart – I admire your determination to get your mileage in yesterday. I don’t think I would have gotten back out the door after the first thunder and lightning round.
Great running everyone!

Got in 7 miles this morning. It was a LITTLE cooler than normal, but still mid 70s.
