@Teresa502 I like Suunto watches, even though my Suunto 5 died on me. I actually think the crack inside was from a cycling accident, but the button felt like it just wore out. Maybe I should've paid the money to have it repaired, instead of opening it myself. I got over 4 years of frequent use out of it, and would've liked a little more. My old Suunto Spartan Trainer is a few years older and is still going strong, but doesn't have some of the newer features I like. I'm eyeing up the Suunto 9 but probably waiting for a good deal.
Nothing exciting to report today. Parent meetings at the school are always such an entertaining cultural experience for me, haha.7 -
`I have a Garmin 245 Music.
The Forerunner 255 non-music is on sale right now in the US. That's the one I want next, but I haven't taken the leap yet. Get it, then give us some feedback.
The "Primary Race Event" and "Daily Workout Suggestions" are interesting to me. And, I like Open Water Swimming, so it has that too.5 -
I have a cold and feel horrible. I tested negative for covid, and no fever, so I'm guessing it is the retro- pre 2019 standard issue September cold.
My tried and true cure for the common cold is to get a calendar and mark the date of first symptoms, then count out ten days and put a green check mark, then wait.

Halfway thru Sept almost already. 62 plus miles against goal of 100. Closed out my Apple Sept challenge today which was nice. I know I should not feel pressured by those random goals it sets but sometimes I do because they are reachable.
We finally had storms overnight. Unfortunately they were boomers so I slept pretty badly as they woke me up quite a few times and with my back being cranky then it bothers me enough I get up to sit on some ice for a while till it's numb enough I can go back to sleep. Over an inch of rain and it cooled off down to 70 but boy was my run humid this morning.
I use an Apple watch which links to a polar chest band for HR accuracy - I like it because you can set it for different challenges and it will tell you your pace at whatever set distances you want. And of course you can listen to music wirelessly and not have to carry a phone. I also use a fitbit (am I a nut?) I like the sleep data and trust the resting HR info on the fitbit more than the watch and it reminds me to move every hour which I definitely need with my office/computer type job. Both devices do not give an accurate HR while I run which is why the chest strap because I can really get my HR up there when I want to go faster (I am talking over 190....) so I set an alert for over 195 to slow my roll.
@chris_in_cal that Jury duty is the gift that keeps giving eh? Covid is definitely starting to ramp up again so I have been trying to be careful. I had a cold back the beginning of July and it sort of thru my training. When I was younger I might have kept running thru it but maybe I am older and wiser. As you say, they last the same amount of time no matter what you do 🫤😩
Poison ivy. ONLY thing I found to help me was the ancient pink Calomine lotions. Tried everything under the sun including Rx level stuff and nothing helped to dry it up and stop the itch like that old remedy. @AlphaHowls Anyway, hope you get some relief. That can be awful.6 -
@SummerSkier glad you got some rain...it was cloudy for the last few days, but our house never saw more than a drop or two. Sounds like you are all geared up with all your devices 😉
@chris_in_cal sorry you're not feeling well. That cold cure sounds exactly like what I would do! Hope it's less than 10 days 😞
I also woke up feeling like 💩 Actually started last night after dinner. But by afternoon I was ok.
So did an easy 6 TM miles after work.

I had another nice 7 mile run this morning. It was raining lightly when I headed out, and off and on during the run, but no storms and never heavy rain. I saw a skunk and three deer. And a dog just walking down the street in front of me. I didn't want to come up behind him so I turned and went down a parallel road. I don't think he even noticed me. I also saw one of my coworkers out walking with her neighbor.

Good morning everyone!
Got in a 4 (09"22). After 51 runs... I'm taking the weekend off!
(Though will do some stretches, bridging and my usual pushups in the morning!)
Sooo... Out tonight and tomorrow 🍻🍺
And then I'll be back on it again!
@SummerSkier thanks for the words of wisdom!
@chris_in_cal get well soon!
@Laurz9191 good luck for Sunday! Everything crossed for you 🤞🙏🤞🙏
You got this! 💪

@tarun_yadavA enjoy your well earned weekend off!
7 miles this morning. Thought it would be nice running weather at 72F, but the 94% humidity killed me!

@Teresa502 I have the Garmin 255s Music. I too thought I would use the music feature, but you have to have a Spotify Premium account for it to play your Playlists, and the other services it supports you also have to have the premium version. I think you can download your own songs that you own, but I get bored with the same old songs over and over. But no, I don't think you need WiFi. The appeal is you don't need to take your phone with you on runs if you have the music on the watch.
You are a genius @Scott6255! Ok, so maybe I'm technologically challenged.... I paired up my Air Pod (singular because I've misplaced one of them) and got the music going on my watch! Without my phone. Without wi-fi! I had upgraded to the paid version of Spotify shortly after I got the watch but I had trouble pairing my headphones I was using at the time. Then I kind of forgot about the music feature on the watch. Thank you!!7 -
Monthly question: What kind of watch/tracking device does everyone have? Are you happy with its performance?
I just got the 265s. I’ve had it a couple of weeks. So far, loving it! The battery life is great, the GPS tracking is a lot more accurate than my last watch, and the band is more comfortable. This watch and my last had a music feature that I never used. I’d just assume not have that feature but it comes with all the models I was considering.4 -
@Teresa502 wrote: »Monthly question: What kind of watch/tracking device does everyone have? Are you happy with its performance?
Fitbit Charge 5
I do not have any issues with it. I just needed a general idea of what was happening and it provided that. I started with a fitbit November 2015 when I had lost most of the weight (gift to myself). I have had a few models over time...I tend to wear the little buggers out.

My calf felt pretty good during the run today. A little tight afterwards as I cooled down, but not as bad as after the race. I sat down and put together the training plan leading up to my A race in Jan. I am using a Hanson’s plan but I am allowing 1 easy run a week to be optional. Some weeks 6 days might not be a big deal but sometimes 5 days just works better for my life. The overall weekly mileage for the HM plans isn’t significantly lower than the marathon plan and I remember finding it hard to fit all of that in last fall. It starts out easy enough but I am starting tempo runs in a week and a half. Guess we’ll see how that goes. Hopefully it will cool just a little. If I could just get temps in upper 60’s-very low 70’s, I could probably hold a faster pace for these shorter speed sessions.7 -

I am highly allergic to it and when my neighbor does not take care of it, I have to. Three years running, every August/September. This round is not my worst and I have not had to end up at the doctor yet. I usually end up with steroids and a cream. I still had some cream and have been using it and keeping it covered.

I ran 3.5 miles this morning. It was cool, but it was humid, so it didn't really feel cool. I saw three deer. I was kind of speedy at a 10:32 average pace with negative splits, so it was a good run. Then I came home and did some yoga and as I was getting ready to head out for work a thunderstorm came through and I got drenched going to the office. I was glad I got my run in before the storm.
I have a Garmin Forerunner 45S. It's pretty basic, but does everything I need. I really like it.

Not mine, but running partner A's husband and two teens boys went to Alaska for a week. This is what they get to see every day.

Mack has been naughty and trying to take his bandages off, which is probably a good sign as he's active and no longer curled up in a sad little ball in the corner of his cage. So I took a sock out of the lonely sock bag, cut the end off and here we go:It's not too tight. He's fluffy!School meetings are usually an entertaining cultural experience for me, but last night's may have triggered my fight or flight response, uggh. I did get a nap today but am feeling overly wired. And kids are sick so I'm trying to stay away from everyone and actually wore a mask whenever I left my room today. It's probably too late for me to avoid catching whatever it is. And we're not testing. I don't want to know.
Also did some baking as it's my turn to provide cake at church on Sunday:Good walnut recipes, anyone?
So the cake is my basic banana bread recipe, cut into 2 layers with my cool new cake slicer, with a thin layer of my husband's failed chocolate-peanut fudge (didn't set properly) in the middle, and my leftover buttercream icing thinned out with a little milk and drizzled on the top, then topped off with chopped walnuts from our yard. I need to use up last year's walnuts, because more are coming soon. I use a hammer to bust them open, then roast them lightly in the oven.
And for the new people, no, I don't currently run 😆 If I ever get healthy enough to run again, you will definitely hear about it!10 -

!
I laughed till I hurt about Mack being naughty!
I do not have any walnut recipes. I sure wish I did. I have two walnut trees. One of my clients harvested that last two years and made me black walnut cookies.

@polskagirl01 I’m glad that Mack seems to be feeling better!
I went on an easy 5.6km run today. I had a showdown with a swan pair and their almost fully grown babies. I didn’t feel like backtracking to avoid them but I also didn’t want to get attacked. In the end they hissed and I yelled at them to let me pass and slowly walked by and everyone went about their business.
I am excited for tomorrow- a little nervous too. It’s supposed to be really hot which I was not expecting (up to 80 degrees Fahrenheit). So I guess the new strategy is all about staying cool while running for hours in the sun .
So far 91.4/160km for September.6 -

Impressive rising to the challenge. I hope it goes well...you are in the inspiring other people mode. I am. Have a good race.

@laurz9191 i guess you will be taking your fast chews with you. Dang that sounds pretty warm. good luck
@chris_in_cal how is that cold coming along. I seriously can go thru boxes of kleenex. 🤧🤧🤧😰
It was nice and cool this morning at 70 deg but sadly the humidity was prbably also close to that. I got in 5 miles but was dripping by the end. 💦💦💦 I passed one gal walking her dog who told me I was an inspiration. I guess you know you are old when you get comments like that. I thanked her of course but thought what was so inspiring? That I was out running or that I was so OLD and out running. 🤨😳
Up to 70 miles out of 100 goal for the month and we are supposed to have glorious weather the next week - lows maybe in the 60's with low humidity. That means some of you will need gloves I bet
6 -
@Laurz9191 glad you kept your distance from the geese. Those can be really mean. Good luck tomorrow! Be careful, 80F is really hot to be racing.
It was a bit cooler (71F) but again humidity in the 90% range. Got in 10 miles at sub 9 min/mi, but it wasn't very enjoyable.
7 -
@Laurz9191 Good luck tomorrow! Those are tough temps for a marathon. Stay hydrated!1

Sept total: 50/100 miles

9/4: 4.3 miles
9/5: 3 miles
9/6: 3.9 miles

9/9: 13.1 miles
9/12: 3 miles
9/15: 5.2 miles
9/16: 6.5 miles
Basically uneventful but hot. I did a test run with a running skirt I bought for a costume for an upcoming race. The best part is a pocket on each thigh big enough to fit a phone, and the shorts didn't budge even with the added weight. Also a back waist pocket big enough for several gels. So much storage! I think the skirt would be a good option for races where it's too warm for leggings but I need to be able to carry lots of stuff.
Also, Garmin told me I was unproductive. 😆 My old watch didn't give that feedback. I feel like I'm going to hear that a lot. I decided against using the Garmin training plan because I realized it is a set plan that can't account for my work schedule or switching days around. Might save that experiment for after my A race.
My kid and I went bowling this afternoon. We're both pretty terrible, but it's fun. And we started putting out Halloween decorations. I bought some new stuff this year so we unboxed some of it. Still have to get some stuff out of the attic, but it's starting to look spooky!5 -
@martaindale with those Garmin training plans you can reschedule any of the workouts manually if you want to switch some days around.
Just FYI, If you want to.2 -

I ran 1.35 miles this morning for my streak. It was raining, but not storming so I decided to go ahead and get it done first thing. It was ok running in the rain, but I don't really love it. It wasn't too hot later today, but it was humid so I was still glad I ran earlier.
Good luck tomorrow @laurz9191!

Morning everyone!
Got in a 4 today (09"22).
@kgirlhart a fellow streaker! Lol... good going! 🙌
@Laurz9191 can't wait to hear how you got on!6 -
@Laurz9191 I have had that same thing happen with swans. There were lakes on both sides of the road, so I had nowhere to go but straight through. I used a similar approach and got through unscathed.
I hope your race goes (went?) great! We'll be looking forward to your race report!
I had a good day and went for a walk yesterday. It was very nice. The spot where the guy was camped out (before I left for the summer), seems to have been cleaned up - sort of. Some of his stuff was thrown over the fence into the land that I think belongs to the cemetery. So I'm somewhat concerned about that happened to the guy, but have no way of knowing anything and whatever happened was probably several months ago. Hopefully wherever he is, he has a new pillow and blanket because the ones he had in the tent look like they've been laying out for some time now.
Pretty scenery:
Then this happened when I was getting into the car this morning...
There was nothing to be done but sweep this all up and dump it in the trash bin. Fortunately we always have "emergency snacks" in the church coffee bar that we can serve with coffee, and my other cake was fine.
I have a lid and carrying case for that glass baking dish, so may look into whether I can replace the dish from here. I got it in the US, and have found that sizing here is frequently not the same.8 -
@polska_girl oof! Sorry for your loss 😔1

Hello everyone!
So, I completed my marathon ! I am very happy that I made it, and, even though my time was far off my goal (thanks to some walking… km 29,32,36 in particular). I did get a 5min PR to my first marathon I did in 2005 and I was under 5 hours (4:54:29)- which was the goal I used to get me to the finish line.
Race report below:It was really hot (especially the second lap) and I am glad I didn’t overheat. I must have looked pretty out of it by km 29 because one of the race organisers asked me if I needed help. I took that as a sign to walk a bit more and drink more water, which helped me get my energy back. There were a lot of people walking and I even passed two of the race pacers (the one for 4:30:00 and for 4:15:00)- so I think the heat pushed a lot of people pretty hard.
The course was nice and everything was perfectly organised. I do however feel like I can do better, so for me, even though my legs feel like lead- I am thinking about doing another one where I prepare (hopefully) better next fall. I’m going to enter the Berlin marathon lottery and hopefully I’ll get a spot….
Kassel is known for fairy tales so I guess that’s why my medal says Rumpilstilzen.
So far for September I have 134.5/160km.
I’m taking the next 3 days off .
