I mentioned "Variety" in my Highlights List ...
Stores: There may be roughly the same number of stores, but there was different stuff!! That was fun.
TV: I couldn't tell if there was freeview because the place we stayed had cable (or whatever it is). Nevertheless, it was nice to watch some different shows.
Music: If I'm not watching TV in the evening, I've got music on, and I've got a ton of music. However, that music video channel brought back a lot of memories. Music I hadn't heard in years. Same with the radio station in the car. We don't have a lot of radio stations here, and most are modern pop. In Canada, I found a station with older music ... again memories!
One area there was less variety was in the world of department stores. There was Walmart. And when I had a browse through the clothing section, there wasn't much selection. I can do much better here. But that puzzled me because I recall more variety in previous years. Does everyone shop online now?
But a couple questions:
- what is with all the medication ads on TV???? They're hilarious! "If you're suffering from headaches, see if HeadacheEX is right for you". And then the low fast-talking voice comes on, "HeadacheEX isn't right for everyone and may cause blinding migraines, tension headaches, cluster headaches, sore neck and jaw. Talk to your doctor."
- what is with all the scent ads? Apparently clothes, furniture, carpets, houses, and everything smell bad and need products sprayed everywhere to make them smell better. I almost started feeling self-conscious!
Just a couple things that stood out to me.

Shopping-Yes, people buy online now. It's a conundrum. If you want to shop at a store, they don't carry your size or the products they have are styles that fit the masses. I.e., boxy t-shirt types. I tried buying a nice dress at a mall a few years back and all the dresses were designed as if they were made of grain bags...boxy with no account for curves or flattering lines. So, we buy online.
Stores say they don't stock it because we buy online. We say we buy online because they don't stock it.
Decision fatigue is real. I get it at Bath and Body Works (store full of scented things) and Victoria's Secret.
Probably was not a freeview in the hotel. They show those types of programs on cable by default. Hotels often have a few channels of variety if they offer cabl.
Meds-Several years ago in the U.S. the government started allowing pharma to advertise directly to the public, with the caveat they crammed all the side effects into the ads. The lists are long, hence the quick-talking disclosures at the end.
By the way-This works. We were watching the World Series and an ad came on for a new medication that is non-hormonal that addresses symptoms of menopause; namely hot flashes. I took note.
Noticing these differences is part of the fun of travel! I even love watching TV in languages I don't understand. In Germany, I like watching sitcoms I know and listening to the different voices of the actors dubbing them. Jerry Seinfeld sounds far different in German.

You're probably better off that Corey won't cook those things. I used to love Vienna Sausages, but now the sound they make when you take them out of the can due to the goo they are packed in makes me cringe.

Good morning ladies!
I'm enjoying the "morning prattle" - I feel honored to read and enjoy everything you ladies share here. Got nearly 8 hours of sleep last night. Only up once for trip to the bathroom. Had a glass of milk before bed, that probably helped.
Busy busy yesterday. Over 13,000 steps! Lots of walking around the back yard spreading straw and wood shavings collected from the chicken coop over the past several months.. It was too wet to bring the mower out and mulch it but the places I where put it were just weed patches anyhow. Hopefully it will break down over winter and inspire some grass to grow with the extra boost of nitrogen.
And some of the steps were from several after meal walks. Got to catch up with a couple of my sweet neighbors driving by, it was great talking with them if just for a couple minutes. Poor Mrs. Roger with lymphadema has a swollen and infected leg again. She's maintaining good humor about it and joked that she can wear PJ bottoms to Walmart and blend in with the rest of the crowd - her jeans are too tight around the calf to wear comfortably. She was waiting for a call from the pharmacy that her antibiotics were ready. Hope they came through OK. I will check with her later today.
Every day I count my blessings.
Sue - crossing fingers the methotrexate helps. Glad to hear you got the OK for the clinic.
Heather - nice you made it to spend time your friends and I'm sure it IS good to be back home. I don't blame you for commenting about the phones at the table, I probably would have done the same thing.
Yesterday my young girlfriend was suffering from a 4 day migraine/sore neck and possibly covid to top it off. 4 days of misery. She doesn't have a regular MD, just a chiropractor and the naturopath. She knows my doctor and called the office to get in to see her. And was told the clinic is not taking new patients - meaning not any of the 3 doctors there. I immediately thought of our Tracey. The clinic has a waiting list. I never, ever thought the clinic would be at capacity. I see my doc has cut back to 3 days a week to have more time home with her little kids, maybe that's one of the reasons.
I had a chat with one of DH's best friends on Sunday. Hadn't heard from him in a few years, he knew DH was in failing health. So he asked how DH was and I told him the condensed story of DH's final months and passing. He was sorry to hear of course.
After the conversation ended, things seemed to shift a little for me. I can't explain it. Somehow there was a sort of closure I hadn't achieved yet. I realize I'm looking at the future with fresh eyes today if that makes any sense.
Enough prattle, lol. Make it a good day!

Heather--Glad your visit is going well. I am finding I get real upset and inpatient and I am working on it. Keep telling myself to breathe and enjoy the minute. Love the group picture. How special to have since long freindship. I dislike phones at the table and broke DH of it by getting up and moving to another table. Said if he was going to mess with the phone I was going to just eat by myself. I do that with my kids also. So far only have to do it once and they will not do it again.
Tracey--I understand the recluse part. When my son was a couple years old I did not go out of my house for almost 2 years. Spent my time cleaning over and over. I find again Iam having to push myself to go anywhere. DH is a big help. I hope your DD is getting the support she needs. Pray your DH is okay.
Kylia--I am not sure what is the cause, but I have been having times when my heart feels funny and my heart rate will be 180-193. It doesn't happen often, but at times when I am trying to go to sleep or sitting watching TV. I keep thinking I should call the heart doctor, but it doesn't happen regular enough to track if I was to wear a monitor. My luck it would not do it until I take it off. You take care also.
Rebecca-- I agree about the scents. How did we ever live without them before. I feel just a waste of money.
Lanette--
Another windy and cold day here. Wish it would rain or something.

Rebecca - Ditto from me on the scents.
Went to town yesterday to pick up some leather work gloves for Corey at Sam's Club, and stopped in at Goodwill. Picked up four frames and a small shadow box for some pieces I'm working on, including that clock. Decided not to try framing it in clay, as I found the frame that had the mat and the size I wanted for the clockface for $5. Below is the piece the clockface was originally installed in before it fell off the wall, and I may yet use that for something else.
That old frame has character definitely! You could always put the months on the top, and families names, then the month you're in in the round part with a place to put the names. Hooks?

Lol yep. I mean when did clean clothes have to have a scent anyways? The only scent I wish I had on my clothes is the scent of sunshine, and fresh air.🤗💖🌞

I buy unscented everything. Scents are chemicals and really bad for you. Even scented candles . Carcinogenic.

My son used to like them- I always rinsed them off before giving them to him. Mac and Cheese- his favorite that he makes for himself at least once a week but cooks it the way I taught him- add real cheese and some garlic powder to it

Some are still made with lead wicks too, even though it is illegal in the US. Some imported ones have them.

You are welcome!!
Sometimes my son adds a can of tuna for a "tuna casserole" but usually just mac and cheese.
Son doesn't cook a lot of things but is doing more especially when his girlfriend comes over and they cook together. Their favorite is mabo tofu. They are 25yrs old and both still live at home. Too expensive to move out even with them both working full time

Regarding the scents -- there was one Febreze ad that had people spraying this stuff on everything in the house, and around ... and I kept thinking: "Why don't they just open a window?"
When we came back to our place after a month away, it smelled a little bit dusty like a place that hasn't had air movement in a month, so the first thing I did was to open a window. Outside smells great because we've got all sorts of flowers in bloom out there, so I let some of that into the house.
Our yard is kind of an extension of our living area and we often have the doors and windows open so that we go in and out like how we would go to another room.
And yes, with laundry, I get detergent for sensitive skin which doesn't have much of a scent, then hang dry everything. I did a load yesterday and hung it outside.
I use a eucalyptus detergent if something has a strong smell I don't like or if it has been in a bin downstairs a while.

I LOVE Mac and Cheese.
The best I've had was in Scotland. I was living on Mac and Cheese and Millionaire Bars for a while. So delicious ... but not good for the weight.

We rented a 2-bedroom apartment through Airbnb, but they did have a cable package. So I could see that there could be hundreds of channels available, but I could only access some of them.
I enjoy noting the differences between places too. I didn't think I'd notice much of a difference going to Canada, and in some areas, there wasn't ... but 6 years is a long time, and some things stood out to me a lot more than they might have done if I had continued to go to Canada once a year.
Going to New Zealand, on the other hand, was like going to a softer, kinder Australia ... with a different accent.

Machka- I am singing my happy song and doing my happy dance for you! What a wonderful trip! So happy you and your DH were able to take it and brava to you for making such wonderful travel arrangements! So well thought out! Your airbnb hosts sound like a dream! For me, that would be the "weak link" in the arrangements. the possibility of poor airbnb accomodations. So happy everything worked out, you had time for everything AND relaxing, and made the journey there and back again!
Hugs to all. ttfn xoxoxo KJ (Kelly)
The Airbnb was a weak link. I had enquired about a few places via Airbnb and another source. One looked really nice on the site, with a good price, but when I enquired about it, the person raised the price and even when I did a screen shot of what was on the site, he would not back down. There was another I was considering, but I just didn't have a good feeling about it. So I was apprehensive about what we would get.
But there were other weak links, like the rental vehicle and the Air NZ skycouch option.
I had a lot of anxiety in the days leading up to departure!!

Walked around the neighborhood then took a bit of a walk with Vince. We didn’t go very far, but at least I got him to do a bit
Allie – good lookin’ car. I especially like the 4 door. I’ve never named my cars. OHHH< Myles is so adorable sleeping. Well, he’s so adorable awake, too
Well, we put out the “fence” today for the Christmas decorations and have the arches up (no lights yet)
kylia – yea for your hubby. I find that I drink a lot when I’m in the car. Probably the dry air. If there’s a rest stop, I consider it a mortal sin not to use it….lol
Tracey – (((HUGS)))) I’m so sorry your dh won’t report this.
We’re supposed to get 12 yards of topsoil next Wed and then Thurs we’re supposed to rent a mini-skid-steer. Now they’re calling for rain. But not even 50% so maybe the weather forecast will change
Denise called yesterday. Seems they want to buy PJ a full size trampoline so she was asking if we would like to go in on it. I’m guessing so and we’ll just do the trust next year. I wanted to get a Cosco gift card for Colby for Christmas. He eats, too. Well, I found out that only a member can buy one. So I was going to have a friend of mine who is a member buy it for me. But then I found out that they’ll only send it to the person you bought it for. Finally, we decided that he’d just appreciate an Amazon gift card just as much.
Honestly, I very seldom buy clothes at WalMart. For one thing, they usually carry much larger sizes than I need. Also, the quality isn’t that good.
KJ – LOL how you come up with names for things
Lisa – I agree with you. “don’t take this medication if you are allergic to it”. Now how are you supposed to know if you’re allergic to it if you don’t take it and find out????? And how about all those side effects of a medication?
Heather – all you gals look so great together. Glad you went. I’m with you on the phones. To me, it’s rude to be on your phone just chit-chatting. Lynette does it all the time. She will be over our house and we can be talking but she has to be on her phone.
Picked up a prescription for Loki and, of course, had to stop at the Salvation Army. Found a pair of pants that fit me. That doesn’t happen often. In one sense, it’ll be nice when I go back to the Y. On Wednesdays I can do some cardio, then take the water aerobics class, then by that time the Salvation Army will be open. I do miss going there, even tho sometimes all they have is junk.
Beth – I never even heard of livermush until we moved down here. Well, I’d never heard of persimmon pudding, either. And sweet tea – yuk!
Rebecca – oh, yes, only the smell of sunshine and fresh air. Can’t be duplicated, no matter how hard they try
Want to roast some chickpeas. Think I’ll do that tomorrow since it’s supposed to rain and get colder.
Off to finish a towel topper. I’m thinking that maybe before I put the button on, I’ll run it thru the dryer rather than using the iron.

Well, my final pottery class is done, and it was well worth the time and the cost, I think. It pushed me out of my comfort zone, and that instinctive drive to just stay home and be a hermit that others were discussing earlier. Shown here are nine of the pieces I've made that have been fired to the bisque stage. I did three coats of a sapphire blue glaze on it, which looks as if it's colored terra cotta. I have no idea what the result will be, but I look forward to seeing it once it's fired. My instructor will let me know when it's been fired and I can pick it up. Four more pieces will be fired to bisque, and I'll be glazing them when I go in to pick these up.
I was up there for four hours glazing these and trimming two others, and I feel like I've been rode hard and put away wet. Just wrung out. I'll be in bed early, I'm thinking.
Hope it's been a good day for all,
Love,
Lisa in AR

Hello to you all! And yes, Thank you Barbie! What a great idea about marking the time change as a new beginning. I have done that this week but had not connected the two things.

Heather - that is my point for him too. I just shake my head sometimes.
Barbara - No they aren’t they are wood, but that’s a great idea!
I used to make that mayonnaise chocolate cake. I need to find that recipe again.
Machka - Walmart’s clothing section isn’t what it used to be. Also, it depends on gone store. My local one doesn’t have half the selection that a bigger one in the city has.
So what colour is cheese supposed to be?
Those medication ads always make me laugh too, most are on American stations. CTV and CBC don’t have as many.
Lisa - I’ve never understood those scent boosters either.
We don’t have any of the streaming services right now except for Paramount Plus that we won in McDonald’s Monopoly for a year.
I’ll be getting Amazon next week again, soon time to order some Christmas presents.
Kraft macaroni and cheese is one of my favourites. I eat it too often.
Carol - how nice the house is still in the family.
Heather - lovely picture. I agree phones shouldn’t be at the table.
Rebecca - I used to have those types of calls with one of my friends. I miss those types of chats. I’m glad you had fond memories to relive today.
I had ceramics tonight and finished a piece. It’s a cookie jar for Kaitlyn for Christmas.
I also cut out a new paper project today, it’s a radio. I’ll post a picture when I have it made. I go to Kaitlyn’s and help her decorate every year and then she comes and helps me. When I go to her place I usually buy her a decoration of some kind. I can’t really afford anything this year so am doing this. I had everything here to do it with except a couple colours of paper.
Tomorrow I have a quiz in the morning, then we are going to get a deck box and some paving stones from my friend that is moving. Then I’m going to work on the radio.

We have 3 department stores here, only one of which is related to a North American company.
Target - related to the North American company
K-Mart - not related to any North American company now or previously
Big W - not related to any North American company now or previously
They've all got a decent collection of clothes and things of varying quality and prices. But when things go on sale, I can get some really good deals. So much so, that I don't buy as much from the OP shops (used places) because I figure why buy used when I can get something very similar new for the same or slightly less.
In the past when we've visited Canada, and I've gone to Walmart, I've been able to pick up 2 or 3 nice things at really good prices. Not this time. The selection was tiny compared to what we have in Tasmania, and the prices were high!
On the one hand, I was disappointed, but on the other hand, I was glad to see that the Tasmanian prices were pretty good.
Cheese is naturally a creamy white colour. The brilliant orange is a dye. In North America, the cheddar is dyed orange from an old practice that was started to trick people into believing they were getting better quality cheddar (see article below). In Australia, that practice wasn't started so cheddar (and pretty much all cheese) is creamy white.
https://www.wonderopolis.org/wonder/why-is-cheddar-cheese-orange
Canadian Cheddar was not one of the Canadian foods I was looking forward to, but we like cheese so I ate it.
This is Australian Cheddar.Snowflake1968 wrote: »I had ceramics tonight and finished a piece. It’s a cookie jar for Kaitlyn for Christmas.
