What happened to Nutrition Database?

Options
I used to use a nutrition database online, where the logo was ND, I think it was through the Self website, had a lot of great tool like nutrient density analyzer, lists of foods for different diets, I thought it was like nutrient data.com. Absolutely can’t find it now, was wondering if anyone is familiar with it, has the web address or know what happened to it. Thank you in advance.

Never heard of it; maybe it shut down?

Are you thinking of the USDA database "Food Data Central?" It's a great resource for double-checking the MFP Food Database. It's also a good place to look for good syntax to look up foods in MFP if you aren't sure which one is correct. You can search for a food, and then you might want to click on "Legacy Foods." You'll get things like "Beans, black turtle, mature seeds, cooked, boiled, with salt." If you use that EXACT syntax in the MFP database, you can find the entry that matches the USDA. Oddly, if something in the MFP database says "USDA" in the title, it's not from the USDA database. Exact syntax only.

If you're looking for something else, be aware you might not get an answer even if someone knows where to send you. The MyFitnessPal Community Guidelines that we all agreed to when we signed up prohibit us from posting "post any links or mentions of other services, websites, or businesses from which an associate or myself might benefit financially or otherwise." (see number seven).

If you haven't yet, peruse some of the "Most Important Posts" to find some good guidance to how best use MFP. For example:

I remember the Self Nutrition Database. It was very useful. I don't know what happened to it, though.

I think it was developed using a technology (Adobe Flash) that was deprecated so is no longer usable. Maybe they decided it was too costly to upgrade the site to a different technology.

Interestingly, it's in the Internet Archive Wayback Machine, with a UI that actually seems to work partially . . . but the Flash parts, which were a lot of the good and unique stuff, don't work. Pity.

    Ann.... you're fast!

The discussion I link to below mentions everything mentioned above, plus all the other alternative sites I'm aware off, plus a bunch extra that I was not.

    https://www.reddit.com/r/NoStupidQuestions/comments/1287hw3/is_there_any_replacement_yet_for_the_self/

Logging on MFP after double checking entries was more than usable and allowed me to lose and maintain my loss.

Free subscriptions will probably not get you the reporting you want. Paid subscription to one of the MFP alternatives mentioned early in the discussion will.

But do remember that database clean up is work, not cheap to do, and by the looks of it hard to make commercially viable

Packages and formulations change, barcodes get re-used, manufacturers lie or get caught and amend data, and double and triple entries still end up happening🤷‍♂️

In looking around foodb.ca from the university of Alberta also popped up. Looks interesting, with one d!😎

I definitely miss that site. And yes, we "lost" the SELFNutritionData website when Flash Player was officially removed from browsers December 31, 2020. Darn it. I had forgotten about that site. I'm really sad now.

Not the only good thing we lost when Flash was deprecated. But I get why Adobe made the decision. It was from the safer, simpler stage of the Internet. Too many security issues to be manageable. 🤷‍♀️😢
