Anniesquats100 wrote: »Rosemarie I started a novel about a military explosives expert whose family was targeted by a terrorist. It was sort of a murder mystery, located in Maryland. As I got further along, it became more and more of a memory challenge to keep the elements of the story straight. So I got a few chapters done and then I stalled out. Now it's on my previous laptop, so that's a challenge.
I've had a number of concussions, and I'm not sure my little dented brain is capable of a book length work, especially a mystery with multiple suspects. And I'm not sure why I would put in the work. But on the other hand, it was a good story.
If I'm just doing it for fun, maybe short stories would suit better. Hmm. Something to think about. I joined a writing group but they were more advanced and into publishing, so I let it go. I'm not ready to even think about that. Kudos to you Heather! It's a long challenging journey, and you did it!
Meanwhile I am starting to close out my Mom's banking and insurance. Lots to do.

In my data analytic way ...
Whenever I attempted to write short story mysteries, I drew up a flowchart of what was supposed to happen, then created a little database of who would be the possible suspects, why they might have done it or not, the clues they would find, etc. etc.
When I finally finished all that, I put some words around it.
Unfortunately the people who read it found it very "clinical", I suppose. They said they couldn't get to know or relate to the characters. Several suggested I use more adjectives.
Then I started doing technical writing and discovered I'm quite suited to that.

Michelle in NV, beautiful cactus flowers!
Lisa ”Back. On. The. Elliptical. Brava! You inspire me to try PT again.
Belated welcome back @pinh Anna! Lots of support here. Sometimes the best families are the ones we find/make for ourselves.
Heather ‘…Online friends count as friends…´ for which I am truly grateful!
Rebecca yippee, just yippee for the forthcoming (or is it already) visit. YIPPEE!
@hmjack Hope you are not alone in your struggles. This month has been a bust for me, looking forward to February.
Rosemarie it is no wonder that you are tired. It could take a year for you to recover all the energy you expended caring for your husband. Rest well.
Machka “a floater” ugh
Lanette thanks for bone health links, will try to watch tomorrow before my MD appointment. RIP little Almy. ((hugs))
Rita “…I feel useless and sad…” That’s it! That’s exactly how I feel. Sorry you’re there but thanks for letting me know I’m not alone.
I really enjoyed Dean Koontz “The Watchers” but haven’t read any others.
Only through pg 59 but that’s it for now.
Later, lighter, lovelies!

Kylia - I really like the calendar idea, colouring your items to show they were done. Very visual.
I have a warning sign when I’m getting a migraine, I get an olfactory migraine first, it’s usually a smell of smoke, if I can manage to get a deep enough breath I don’t smell it. If I start taking Advil then I can avoid the migraine that will arrive in a few days.
Funnily enough I haven’t had one since I started to get some relief from the work mess.
Ginny - How long of a drive is Columbus, do you spend the night?
Annie - will you have access to your Dad’s accounts in the event he becomes unable to pay the bills and such?
Barbie - we have a pretty hood surrounding of neighbours but the one just across the street are unfriendly and have actually caused some strife with the ones beside us. I don’t even know their names, they bought from a couple we were getting to know in 2022.
Heather - what a good way to renew passports. I don’t have one, never have needed it. I see on social media and from hearing people talk out and about Canada really dropped the ball for a while in the length of time to get a renewal but it seems to have sped up again now. I think there are only certain providers able to take passport photos here.
I had to look up the term you were using. Schadenfreudeish it’s what I was thinking it meant. 😂
Rita - I had missed the original post, but because of yours I now have Puff the Magic Dragon stuck in my head.
Allie - I think we learned that song in elementary school.
Funny story, I never wanted to listen to music my parents didn’t listen to except Abba and Air Supply, however my best friend’s older brother had an album called Dumb Ditties. It had “My Ding a Ling” on it. Their Mom came home one day and my friend and I and her two younger sisters were listening. She took the album away completely and told her brother he had to keep it out of our reach.
I loved the Irish Rovers. I also did and still do love the old country. Johnny, Waylon, Willie, George & Tammy, Loretta…. I could go on for quite a while.
It has only been in recent years that I purchased other genres of music. Thats thanks to The Voice and American Idol.
Of course, I listen to 70’s and 80’s rock and such or my DH would disown me.
Barbara - I’m glad your procedure is over. I hope you heal fast.
Michele - I have been icing my foot a couple or three times a day, resting it as much as possible and using my tens machine on my calf and doing calf exercises several times a day. I’m also wearing a night splint and using the ball to roll around. I let it get too bad and now I’m really struggling to get healed. I think you’re smart to be paying such close attention now, but if you can rest it more it may be quite beneficial.
It is 11pm! I read Heather’s book after class today for a while, then I puttered around a bit, watched the daytime talk shows I enjoy.
Our Prime Minister was being laughed at a bit on “The Talk” today. It was deserved I think. Nothing serious or political, it was how he was clapping at a hockey game, it was a little overzealous, his daughter was giving him the “you’re embarrassing me face”. I guess even the higher ups get that look from their teens.
My muddle came this evening after work, he put the third coat on and even touched up a couple little places that will look nicer when I paint. Kaitlyn dropped in for a quick minute. She is helping my friend move. She stopped here to get a tote I picked up for her on clearance the other night. She agreed with my paint idea so I’ll go tomorrow and get a couple of tester cans. I’m quite looking forward to this.
After everyone, including Rodger left I designed a card for Lauryn’s birthday and did some reading for homework. I’ll post a picture of the card when it’s done. I also, came up with an idea for Kaitlyn’s. Their birthdays are two days apart. Lauryn will be 35 and Kaitlyn 33.
I should shut this down and go to sleep.
It’s still +4C at 11 pm!
Two weeks ago we had record cold and now may break a record for warmth. Such weird weather.
We are on water restrictions because there is something wrong with the power at one of the treatment facilities. Of course, in todays world nothing should break, nothing that will affect any of these entitled people can just be what it is, it’s someone or something trying to mess up their precious life. I’m so over this mentality.
I have to say though that I realized tonight that I am noticing myself feel better mentally. There were so many things that I wasn’t doing that I loved and not enjoying other things that bring me joy. I’m glad I’m getting me back. It’s been a long time.
Ok enough of a novel. I’m going to sleep.

Annie, Rosemarie, Tracey, and any others that are feeling the writing bug.
I'm not going to give much advice, because everyone has to find their own way, but you do have to 'show up at the page' regularly. Inspiration is not required. Just grab whatever medium makes you feel most comfortable, phone, back of an envelope, tablet, laptop, and make some marks. Put black on white. Don't judge what you are doing. Schedule your writing time, put it in your diary, and make it a priority. It will feel like walking through treacle, but , 'done is better than good'.
If you have the itch, you need to scratch it.
Plus, you need, for the first draft, to lose your fear of getting it wrong. Make mistakes, flounder, write rubbish.
Just keep putting one foot in front of the other. Occasionally, inspiration might, I say, might strike. That's a bonus and a very good day. If you don't 'have' to write, don't bother.
It is the most rewarding thing in the world and one of the hardest.
Schedule it. Do it.
That's all.

While I anticipate starting another novel before the end of the month, I highly doubt I'll finish it.
So ... in January, I read these books! I couldn't do much in the way of exercise or gardening, so I read.

I have been off work since last Friday ... 5 days. The Australia Day long weekend plus a bit.
In that time, we've organised and ran a cycling event. I talked on the radio. We've driven roads for alternate routes for future cycling events. I got a 5 km walk in. And we've cycled a tiny bit ... our first ride of 2024.
We came home yesterday, and today ...
I had to get up early so that we could drop off the remaining few bees at our mentor's place. They'll merge with another hive ... it's the only way to give them a chance.
Then I stopped at the pathology lab for full bloodwork.
That was enough for me, and I returned to bed for 3 hours.
This afternoon, I've been in the garden. Nice sunny day. Lots of work to be done.

I am going to the surgery for the nurse to check on the progress of my eczema shortly. It’s a beautiful day so I may walk as it’s not very far away. The fresh air will do me good.

Tracey-Columbus is about an hour to where I go (depends on traffic and which route I take). If they are all day meetings both days I often stay over. Next week there is a meeting that starts around 9. I am driving over the night before-there is a group of us that go the day before and have dinner. This week I should be done with doctor by 1 so will head back-there is a teams meeting at 3 I would like to attend and then at 5 is a retirement reception for one of our community people. That can change based upon cat scan discussion, etc. Thursday I will leave from home to be there at 9:30 for work meeting. It finishes around noon. Depending on how productive I am this week I may or may not take some vacation time and stop by Casino!
Barbara AHMOD-sorry you feel this month has been a bust for you but that happens. I really feel like I am just getting back from the Thanksgiving/Christmas slide! But BMI is hanging at 26-26.2 (supposed to be healthy for my age) and waist to hip ratio is .73. My problem is my clothes will feel better 5 lbs down so I am working towards that. Working on core should help that.
Heather-sound writing advice. I once had aspirations but that seems long ago. I recently listened to a pod cast about J.D. Salinger-they said he loved the act of writing and his key was that he spent hours each day in the act of writing. Of course, he ended being a bit bizarre so probably moderation in all things is needed!
Kylia-yay for us-rain, snow, sleet this afternoon! Thankfully a one day shot and then maybe sunshine later in week!
Off to get ready for work. Heading in a bit early since I am leaving for physical therapy. No stretches before hand. Will get some steps and such in tonight after hair appointment at 3:30. Perfect sort of work day!
Take care all,

Good morning ladies!
Ginny - did you feel "lighter" when you took that weight vest off? Glad it didn't trouble your shoulders. I didn't realize how heavy 8# could be until I lifted it over my head. Hope the support stockings help.
Barbara - welcome back, we missed you. Hope you heal up quickly and fully. Good they got all the offending cells. You'll get back in the "groove" in no time.
Heather - thanks for the writing tips. I plotted and started fiction books a couple times years ago - not to get something published, but it was therapeutic. Never got further than the first chapter, but it was fun going on an adventure in my head.
Tracey - I sure can tell you are in a much better mood since leaving that job. You have a bright spark now. Glad for the drywall progress. I like your taste in music! Keep working on that foot, sounds like you are doing all the right things.
Michele - sorry about the tight shoes. The orthotics can take up a lot of room. I bet you can stretch them. Seems I have to keep buying shoes bigger and wider to keep my feet happy. At this rate maybe I need to hang on to DH's size 12's. There are a couple pairs still in the closet .... I'm up to a 9 1/2 -10 W from size 8 M twenty years ago. Who knows, I might be able to wear his eventually.
Rosemarie - I'm guessing the longer days should help with the energy level. I think you are actually are pretty busy with your work at the Rescue and various things you do all day. It's OK to have some "lazy" ones. At least that's my excuse!
An interesting video popped up in my YT feed yesterday. If anyone is curious about the human body and how it has evolved to work like it does, here's an interview with Dr. Daniel Lieberman, Harvard professor who studies the evolution of human activity, on Diary of a CEO. Right off the bat - for most people, 7 hours of sleep is optimal. As is 8,000 to 9,000 steps. He and his team have done a lot of research with existing hunter/gatherer tribes to get clues about our bodies.
Here's the link. 1 1/2 hours:
Also yesterday - email from my DB. SIL fell and has a compression fracture in her back. She has osteoporosis and cannot take opioids, so she's dealing with pain and will be going to a pain specialist. Going to PT right now. Interesting timing since we've been chatting about bone health in this group for the past couple weeks.
This made me doublecheck how much calcium I'm getting. I'm so lucky I can drink and eat a variety of dairy products, and I eat plenty just for the protein alone. Grateful that calcium is along for the ride.
Collette coming this morning so I need to play pickup.
Make it a wonderful day!

Hi all,
Thank you for the messages of support. Michele, Rosemaie, and CityJaneLondon (all the others).
I'm on the second week on my couch to 5K workout program. I mix in some other things on the alternate days, but it is helpful...I'm not fast, but get my feet moving.
Because I'm on a meal replacement as temporary portion of my doctor's program, I also commit time to random hobbies to keep my hands busy and myself occupied. I've finished a loop yarn blanket to give to my nephew who is moving into his own place. I sewed a dress for myself. I'm not good at sewing, but willing to practice and be bad at it.
I hit a first 10 lb milestone in January and got myself some new music. It lets me freshen up the playlists and otherwise enjoy tunes. Music cheers me up.
Whidbey-I hear you. I also don't like the vacuum, it is always something I should do more often. I will use any excuse to put it off.5 -
PINH: You are doing great! I notice with the walking videos that I like the ones with music only and not a voice commentary! I called in ill to the animal rescue this morning. I slept most of yesterday and woke up not feeling well this morning. I really need some exercise and a healthy breakfast. I might even call the doctor because of this lack of energy,
I tried weight watchers last summer and enjoyed this but did not lose any weight...probably due to insufficient exercise! Well hopefully I will do some today!

Good morning ladies!
Machka that's interesting that you flow charted your writing. I could get a cork bulletin board and do that on paper. I don't know where I could put a bulletin board though. Hmm.
I'm not driven to write, I just do it to entertain myself sometimes. It stretches my little brain. Maybe I could look for a journal of writing exercises. Hmm.
Meanwhile I have to take my Dad to the dermatologist this morning. Not fun, but not terrible either. Then work on my Mom's wallet, and then groceries.
And yes I will be on my dad's account starting tomorrow so i can get more involved. Hope it works out.
Have a great day ladies!

I went out to the post office after our exercise session. Got my old passport on 'tracked and signed for' delivery. Relief! Popped in to the posh deli to buy organic sauerkraut. Then crossed the road to book a dental check up. Went down a bit to the doctors to make a long overdue appointment, only to find out that it is no longer possible to make an appointment ahead. You have to ring up at 8.30 on the actual day, or come to the surgery at 8.30. What a pain! I may go in on Thursday as it is only at the top of our street. Hanging on the phone seems less attractive.
By this time my hips were hurting, but I made it home OK.
Came down from my bedroom for lunch and got a text from my son to say that Bea has a heavy cold and is not at school! Typical of my son to forget to tell us early. We were all geared up to go, and now it feels weird not to be doing the pick up. I love doing it, but today I was worried about my legs holding up, so maybe it's all for the best.
As I was awake from 3 a m (probably excitement over my book) I am looking forward to a nap. I've been texting friends with news of my book, and will start emailing others this afternoon.

I've been missing for a few days, and I started to read all the posts I missed, but you all are prolfic. I wrote something for Lisa, and realized that I could be here for a week trying to catch up. So I've decided to give you one big hug for all the sorrow I missed and a giant thank you for still being here. I'm going to read a few back posts as I need to understand the newer posts, and there you go. Starting over.
Anyway, I have been gone, because I was out kicking my soda addiction. I've been going through soda withdrawals. I've been grumpy, agitated, miserable, and snappy. It has been rotten. I am starting to feel better, but I'm not there yet. I could tell my husband to go get me a Dr. Pepper at any time, and he would; but I would have to start over again.
I should be able to start reading again, instead of rolling around on my bed, lol.
LisainArkansas
I know exactly what you mean about missing someone. My grandfather has been gone for 37yrs. and I still cry sometimes. He was the best man I've ever know, and as I've aged I've only found one other man whose come close. I married him. So, don't worry about emotional baggage as long as it's good baggage. Don't dwell on unhappy memories or regrets, just think all that has been good in your life. If she make up part of that good, then hold on to the memories.

Annie Yes I am slowly onto the next stage of closing accounts. Also I will be doing thank you notes for a while too! I also have two houses to put back together. Ours to put back the things I did not want older brother to know I had. The other because niece brought three boys one being 2. (I baby proofed the home twice in the middle of getting ready for the service) I thought it interesting (a nicer way to put it) that niece thought It was okay to arrive after ten the night before service and expect me to be up because you know it is so stressful to travel with three young children. I agree. I also I know how stressful it is to lose a husband then immediately have to plan a funeral, have out of town guests, plan meals for Funeral and after funeral meal in our home that I have to get ready for having people over, and organize going out to breakfast the next after the funeral. I did not wait up for her. I left our key in the mail box. They did come to our home after the service. We did have breakfast in a big group the day following the day after the funeral that went well. She then did stop by with boys and husband with three tired out of routine for three days little boys on the way out or town. Her DH would close his eyes and take his 5 minute breaks. After they left I realized she trained me well. If this were to happen again I would say it is four o'clock your boys have school it is too late for you to stop. Hopefully next time you come we will schedule a time earlier in your visit when your boys are more rested. Yes a constant learning experience!8
