Regarding husbands who don't want to leave the house.... here I thought mine was the only one. I'm grateful for the times we had when he WAS adventurous. I wonder if this anti-social behavior contributes to men's shorter lives. They still have us wives but they tune us out, lol.
Barbara - nice that Joe waited to include you in the walk. Awesome that he feels like getting out and being active, it's so important. How is your shoulder doing these days?
Pip - glad that Alaska cruise is booked, you and Kirby will have a good time. Now that you have your enhanced driver's license, no problem crossing borders.
Heather - glad to hear you were able to extend your sports clinic visit. A shame you need to wait a couple weeks to get an idea of your hip condition from the X-Rays. I've heard what we think about expands and I think that's true. Now I notice my sore toes and achy calf and ankle all the time. Grrr.
Vicki - glad you and your DH weren't hurt when that deer collided with his truck but what a hassle. So sorry it happened to you. I would be rattled for a while. We have a lot of deer along our country roads, they hide in the bushes and trees and like to jump out at the last minute.

Annie - You are going to have a busy day with the phone calls. It's so frustrating when we can't understand our doctors, don't blame you for wanting to switch. I also worry, when speaking to folks whose first language isn't English, that they also don't understand ME! I'm so proud of you with your increased time on the bicycle and walking. Good idea setting small goals and losing around a pound by Easter - you can do it. You are on the right track. I've read many diet books in my life, and generally picked up a few tips that worked even if I couldn't carry through with the whole plan the books present. Good luck.
Yesterday I watched a few more Jason Fung videos. Interesting science about food order - eating fats and proteins first, then saving carbs for last and how it helps lower blood sugar and contribute to weight loss. That and delaying breakfast - going 12 or 16 hours without eating - kicks up the fat burning. Here's the food order video if anyone is interested. A little over 8 minutes.
When I saw Dr. D last week about my foot, he mentioned using Voltaren. I picked up some gel at Walmart a couple days ago and finally sat down to read the box. Too many warnings and it can take up to a week to kick in. Good grief. It's going back to the store and I'll pick up some Aspercreme, I see they make some with lidocaine. Hope that helps. There's no noticeable swelling on that foot at the end of the day, but still achiness during the day like arthritis - yet none showed up on the X-Ray. Crazy. I'm still thinking nerves.
We're supposed to see sunshine today, I'm ready.

Good morning, all, from my Arkansas River Valley sunrise,
Sleep eluded me last night until nearly midnight, but that often happens on the nights before medical appointments. The moment I closed my eyes last night I began running scenarios in my head of what the orthopod could or would say today, and couldn't get my mind to hush up. When that happens for very long, it's best to just get up. You want your bed to be a place where you sleep, not a place for mental uproar.
Allie - I'm sorry the UTI won't let go. They're horrible, and affect so much more than just the infected area. Looking at Miles' hair - is he a redhead? Or is that just the light in that photo?
Heather - So glad you found a night's sleep in one bed! Every one of those is a good step. Hope there's some progress toward diminished pain from your sports clinic visit.
On going out to eat, with or without husbands - we seldom go anymore at all, but not because of different eating styles. The pandemic broke us of the habit of eating out - we used to go out every few weeks for dinner, and then on one weekend morning would go eat breakfast at a favorite restaurant. Then I started getting sick, and then retired, so our income dropped precipitously. We haven't eaten out at a restaurant in at least six months. I think we really both are enjoying the creativity of expanding our pantry and freezer and trying different things.
Cooking stuff:Meatball smashed sliders: Last night was an experiment with meatball sliders--ground beef and pork with added panko bread crumbs, parmesan cheese, spices, egg, a small amount of cream, and fresh parsley, baked in the oven. We sauteed the onion and garlic, and then I threw that, along with the parsley round and egg, into the mini-food processor and pureed the mixture with about a tablespoon of cream and added it to the mix. For half of them, we wrapped the meat mixture around garlic cheese curds. The good part is I mean the "we," part. He always gets a little twitchy when I'm in his kitchen, so I enlisted him as a sous chef. 👨🏻🍳😍👀 It was fun.
Note - to keep fresh parsley around, when I buy a bunch of it, I chop it all up reasonably fine. Then I spray a muffin pan with cooking spray, and in each space, I add a tablespoon of parsley to a tablespoon of water and freeze them solid. Then I put all the frozen rounds into a ziploc bag and keep them in a freezer. Means we always have fresh parsley around.
Evie - Speaking of which, thank you for the chicken recipe! It sounds really good, and I can see how the honey would add to it to keep the chicken pieces very moist and tender.
Anyway... I did my two hours of work outside yesterday and my yoga+ with crunches, knee pushups, stretches, etc. Will do my yoga now, and then decide what else for today.

I found that having an eating plan works for me. My plan includes meals and snacks at certain times. That way I'm not trying to decide if I'm hungry. I get light headed if I don't eat regularly so intermittent fasting doesn't work for me.
My father kept his weight the same his whole life (he was a smoker so that might have contributed). Often when he declined foods he would tell people that he was dieting and when they told him he didn't need to diet, he said, "I'm a successful dieter. Please don't confuse me with the potbellied failures." Having a light-hearted comeback is a good way to deal with unwelcome comments.
In our household, I'm the one who wants to stay home and Jake wants to go out. However, he is the one with the weakened immune system who should stay out of places with a lot of other people so our outings are to medical appointments and now with the puppy, we don't go anywhere together unless one of us stays in the car with the dog.

I am so ready for the weekend. Work has been crazy. I am doing 4 days a week for the next month and see how it goes. Hoping my staff will show up.

Good morning, ladies.
Evie, thank you for the chicken stir fry recipe. Sounds delicious.
Lisa, on freezing parsley, I grow a large pot of various herbs throughout the summer and use them as they grow. In the late fall I go through them, clip off what is good, wash them up and put them in freezer bags in the freezer to use throughout the winter and spring. Still using a nice supply now....oregano, basil, thyme, dill, rosemary to name a few.

Continuing to be quite nice here but there is still snow on my walking path so just walking in the yard. I am getting out more during the day though and I think that is contributing to my small weight loss. I am finally seeing the scale dip in the right direction as I am down 1/2 pound and happy with that. Need to get in shape before my Newfoundland trip in June as there is one part of the trip which requires a 2 mile walk. I'm sure I won't have any problem with the walk but I don't want to be the straggler in the group. There is a different boat option for those who can't do the walk but it isn't as scenic so I'm definitely doing the 2 mile trek.

Joe has an MD appointment coming up, postponed because he didn’t know he needed bloodwork. He’s inspired to scale back on the brandy and up the activity. Finger’s X’d!
Lisa meant to comment on the frustrating text you received. Poster child for the communication disconnect in our medical system/offices/staffs. Makes me crazy too, especially when they don’t even listen to themselves, just cut and paste recommendations that conflict with each other. Grr.

Annie please give yourself a pat on the back after each phone call… and maybe a little “exercise snack”. Know how draining phone calls can be, a few minutes on the bike will perk you right back up.

In a way I’m glad it still hurts, would feel foolish going in for the mri next week if it was all better ;} Think you’re on to something about antisocial husbands and their shorter lifespans. “…but they tune us (wives) out” Amen, sister AMEN. Hope the aspercreme with lidocaine gives you some relief. If it’s nerves, have you considered alpha lipoic acid supplements? No need to pay the $$ for Nervive, any alpha lipoic acid will do. My MD recommended it to me, but I can’t tolerate it, get heartburn. Joe takes it and it seems to help him. Did Fairy get a congratulatory treat for her accomplishment?

Barbara - glad your shoulder is doing better but that MRI should give direction. Thank you for the Alpha Lipoic Acid recommendation. I checked it out on Amazon, sounds like folks with pain much like mine were getting relief. Sure worth a try. I took an Ecotrin aspirin this morning and it has helped some. But hate taking these NSAIDS for even a short while, even the lowly aspirin. Tummy complains quickly. Crossing fingers the ALA does the job. It looks like it also helps with blood sugar?? I might kill 2 birds with one stone, who knows.
Fairy lets me know either when one of the other hens is on the nest she wants or she has actually laid an egg. My house is pretty soundproof yet I can hear her loud cackle, lol. She's a loud talker.

I'm not planning on traveling far so it's no big deal to me but good to keep up on all of this.

Been relaxing, and heating, and doing v gentle stretches, according to a YouTube specialist. So far so good. Less pain and no limping around the house.
Hope I get some useful information tomorrow from the NP. I'm convinced it's not vascular, but it gets me in for a 40 minute consultation. I want my X-ray results.
Feeling more optimistic. It's great to read the comments on the videos and realise so many other people have the exact same problem. One said the pain was worse than childbirth. Deffo! I can see it is a solvable issue.

To answer Annie’s question about helpful and unhelpful comments, I agree with everything Lisa put in her spoiler. I could say more, but time is short. The main thing that annoys me is a food police type person commenting on what I’m eating. I hate that!
Regarding Lisa’s comment about the only thing making chicken good is what you coat it with: i have also found this to be true. My most tasty chicken recipes all start with cutting it into bite size pieces. That way, every bite has the coating. I like to just coat it good with seasoning - salt, pepper, garlic powder, herbs, then stir fry in a little avocado oil.
One other thing I want to say. Heather, is this political? I don’t mean it to be. I don’t think it is, but if it is, y’all scroll on by or slap my wrist. People need to leave Kate Middleton alone! Yes, I’m a nosy-butt and I want to know what’s wrong with her, but they’re not going to tell us so we need to get over it. I’m so tired of the teaser headlines that say absolutely nothing and now the mother’s day picture scandal is just ridiculous.

Dr Katie - I couldn't care less about anything royal. All a complete nonsense as far as I am concerned. I do think about the effect all the c..p has on a clearly vulnerable person. William must be having flashbacks to his mother.being hounded.

Kay - Heather's comment was pretty right on as far as I was concerned. I'm pretty neutral on the subject for obvious reasons, but that same media fishbowl killed Diana and must be torture for William and the kids. Not political - it's simply inhumane.
Lots of mixed good/bad from the orthopod - Today's joint recital 🙃:Bad news - The bone scan results showed my left knee is bone-on-bone and will need replacement.
Good news - The replacement needn't be done immediately, there's no hurry. As long as I can still exercise, he suggested hanging on so it only has to be done once.
Good news - The bone scan results that I can see said "no osteoarthritis," which sounds great, but he was clear that he thought that was a misread or typo on the part of the radiologist, as in a part of the report that I can't see, it discusses the bone-on-bone left knee which, by definition, is arthritis. He's putting through a severely worded request for a correction. This is good news because if the VA gets ahold of the "no arthritis" bit, my request to up my percentage will be toast. Plus of course, it's actually true. He's also making sure to know that he's advising the left knee be replaced, more for the VA's sake than anything else.
Bad news - Nothing they can really do about my ankle. He did, however, say that my "elegant" solution of flextaping it was probably the best thing I can do. (Elegant was his word, I swear.) Tape it, protect it, do low-impact exercise as tolerated, and stretch. If it doesn't hurt, I can do it, basically. The ankle replacement technology isn't there yet, and the only other option is to fuse the ankle and lose all mobility in that leg. Not happening if I can help it.
Good news - No infection, no damage, or misalignment in the 5-year-old right-knee replacement. He felt the pain was probably from limping to protect the ankle, throwing all the muscles around the knee into spasm, as well as making my left knee hurt from taking the weight. Taping and protection for the ankle will help the knees, and low-impact exercise, stretching and getting the knee muscles in better shape is the best thing I can do for it.
For the TL;DR (too long, didn't read), overall good news, walked out optimistic. I'm already doing everything right, basically, in terms of my knees and ankle. Left knee replacement in my future but not right now.
And... the VA came through with the first benefits revision appointment in two weeks, so they're pretty much on schedule for five months from request to resolution. We'll see what happens.
Corey's just got home, because the gate alarm is going off, and dinner will be a whole lot of leftovers plus some cottage cheese in a casserole dish. This should be interesting.

Its been beautiful outside the last few days and Alfie got hos hair cut so he and I went for a short walk.
This lupus knocks me out if im up and going for a long time,and I was out and about until 11:30.. this morning ..so took a snooze and have a 10 am appointment to get a tooth pulled I'll be all antibioticed up and im taking a gummie before I go ..im still phobic..but its only about 3 blocks away.6 -

Did an extreme cardio DVD today then walked on the treadmill. The plan for tomorrow is to do a Kathy Smith DVD.
Went to lunch with the ladies today. Most of the things were deep fried. I just got the grilled chicken salad with just water to drink. No dressing. Next week they’re going to this place we went to last year and I wasn’t impressed. Since that’s the day before we leave, I have a good excuse in that I’ll probably be cleaning, packing, doing laundry, etc. I honestly don’t care to go
Tracey – Vince is a homebody, too. Here at the condo he prefers to sit in the condo watching TV. I prefer to go to the pool, play cards, go on walks. I’m trying getting him out more and more. I’m succeeding somewhat. I know that he isn’t interested in traveling and I’m not interested in traveling alone. But many times I go on my own and do things. What an interesting course you're taking.
Came up from the pool and Vince said that he has no idea what he did, but he can’t lift his arm beyond his shoulder.
Yesterday after dinner Vince actually said to me “want to go for a walk?”. I tried to get him to walk to the mall across the street, but no luck

Carol – I kept getting the vanilla error (or whatever it’s called) when I clicked on “bookmarks”. But then I decided to use the “motivation and support” in the list of all the different posts, and I got in. Go figure!
There was supposed to be a launch tonight at 7:04. We waited over 4 hours and it was scrubbed. Due to be launched tomorrow at 7:04. Great, right in the middle of cards. Well, I’ll probably go out on the deck of the clubhouse and watch it

Allie - I agree with Tracy. I don't think a birthday should be tied to behavoir. You give a birthday present because you love that person not because of how they act.
Sunny day here today and I sat out on the gazebo for a little bit. Now I am paying for it. Allergies have hit big time this evening. I have been taking Zyrtec for about a week to try to get ahead of them but does not seem to be working. Maybe need to try nasal rinse.

Heather you’re seeing it as a “solvable issue,” what a relief!

I use Voltaren Emulgel on my arthritic feet from time to time. Seems to work quite quickly and the main warning is "do not use for more than 2 weeks at a time".

I get annoyed when different facets of life ask for 100% effort. My family is more important than my diet, and I will likely go to my Aunt's and overeat for Easter. But I can minimize the damage.

When I lost weight in 2015, it was a 100% effort. For 15 weeks, I never went over my calories and I lost 15 kg.
The great thing was that when I figured out what I could eat and how much exercise I needed to get, I just simply continued to eat and exercise ... and I could put it out of my mind. It was under control. Even on holidays and celebrations, I stuck to my calorie limit.
I went on to focus on my job and university.
But it is definitely harder when there's something emotional we need to focus on.

Further on the barrier that emotions present ... prior to my husband's accident it was much, much easier to exercise.
We met while exercising, on a long, long distance bicycle ride. We got to know each other while exercising. Cycling together is what we do. We have cycled individually occasionally, but mostly together.
After my husband's accident, he couldn't cycle for a while and since he has started cycling again but not nearly the distances or speeds or over the terrains we used to cycle. I could have gone out on my own and continued to cycle, but I didn't. And now I'm as out of shape with my cycling as he is. Only, I want to cycle, and he's kind of iffy about it, so we don't. I could cycle on my own ... but the whole thing is fraught with emotion. If I say I'm going for a ride whether he accompanies me or not ... emotions, all kinds of emotions. So I don't bother.
I do walk at lunch or when he is napping because I can do that on my own and it doesn't present the same emotional response in my husband. But if I want to go for a walk after work, he feels like he should come with me, but doesn't really want to and so ... emotions. So I don't bother.
It's been difficult, it makes me sad, and I haven't been sure what to do about it. I'm just happy whenever I or we do get out and exercise.

It's part of his disconnect from the day's work, and truly enjoy the time while he's at work and I do what I choose. I guess I'm saying it's a balance.

Unfortunately there is not much balance in our situation.
He hasn't stopped doing anything because of me. That was one of the things I enjoyed about us ... we were both into getting out there and doing stuff! Neither one of us wanted to stop the other from doing something, we'd be in there doing it together.
However, he has stopped doing a lot because of his brain injury. The brain injury took his job, his memory, his ability to cycle long distances, his ability to walk distances and different terrains, his energy, much of his motivation, his ability to see projects through, a portion of his cognition, the ability to deal with things, control over emotions and so much more.
Because of his brain injury we have cut way back on doing many things WE enjoyed doing together like travelling, being active, attending events and all sorts.
And I have stopped doing a lot of things out of deference to him.
I don't blame him ... the brain injury is not his fault. It's one of those horrible things in life you never expect.
It's possible he misses doing all the things we used to do too, but it's hard to tell.
But, I am very thankful for days like today when he wanted to ride his bicycle with me ... and hopefully our plan (because he is part of it too) will work to allow us both to be more active. I hope to update you all by the end of the month.
Thankful for the little holiday we just returned from.
Thankful that, although we've had to cut back on travelling because of my husband's brain injury, we can still travel some.
Thankful that my husband still wants to travel!
Thankful that I was able to spend lots of time walking up and down the beach, wading in the water etc.
Thankful that my husband and I were able to cycle a little bit. A little bit is better than none.

Thankful for being able to read and rest.On cycling ... my passion, my life ...Way Back When
I started cycling when I was 6 years old and have been cycling since. My father was a cyclist with a basement full of bicycles which he rebuilt, fixed and maintained. We often rode together as a family and rarely travelled without the bicycles. Cycling was an important part of growing up.
When I got into my teens, I started focusing more on track and field (running) and less on cycling. Then when I started college and got into the workforce in my early 20s, I pretty much stopped cycling altogether. But not for long!
The Beginning
On April 29, 1990, at the age of 23, I started cycling seriously. That first ride was a grand total of 2 miles long, and I had to take a break after the first mile … I was much more out of shape than I thought! For the next few years I put on about 1000 miles a season, and thought I was doing really well.
Then I started increasing my distances, and in the summer of 1994, I rode my first imperial century (100 miles in a day) –- alone. It was so difficult and painful that I said I would never do a ride that long again.
The next year I rode Jasper to Banff (the Icefield Parkway – Canada) in 3 days, which had been a goal of mine since I was 17, when my father did it. I loved it!! And that would have to be when I really started to cycle! Cycling had taken hold and had become a passion!
I did another imperial century (100 miles in a day) in 1997 -– alone again -– but this time I rode smarter and ate better, and it was not a problem. I did centuries just about every year until 2018 … usually several each year.
The Racing Years
In 1998, at the age of 31, I decided to try racing!
I figured I was pretty fast, but had no one to compare myself with because I did most of my cycling alone. I still remember my first race – a very hilly course (for Manitoba), cold, raining, on a borrowed bicycle with Time Trial (TT) gearing. I DNF’d.
For the next 3 years I struggled to train to develop speed – and I was successful to a certain extent, but it was a lot of work. I tried out road racing -– and always got dropped. I tried crits -– and did OK with them. I even won a few! But I hated them because of the high risk of accidents. And I tried TTs -– and did OK, and liked them. In my 3rd year of racing, I only rode TTs.
What’s Next
Meanwhile that year, 2000, I had been riding some longer distances on my own -– centuries and 200 km rides exploring the neighborhood, and I really enjoyed those. So I began considering devoting my time to touring instead of racing.
I looked into touring over the summer, but it just wasn’t quite what I wanted to do. Late in the year, I remembered that I had cut out an article from the newspaper about something called “Randonneuring” quite a few years earlier.
Randonneuring?
I dug the article out, reread it, and decided that was what I wanted to try. It took me a couple months to track down the club in Manitoba -– they weren’t well advertised -– and in the spring of 2001, I decided to try my first 200K (200 kilometres in 13.5 hours including all breaks) brevet. If it went well, I would do the 300K (300 kilometres of cycling in 20 hours including all breaks) … but I wasn’t committing myself to anything.
About a month before the 200K, I tore the rotator cuff in my left shoulder, and the only bicycle I could ride was my heavy Mongoose mountain bike because it didn’t require me to put weight on my left arm. So, I rode that first 200K with my mountain bike! I was very tired, but I enjoyed the ride and decided to do the 300K. I rode that on my road bicycle, was much less tired than I had been on the 200K.
After feeling so good on both the 200K and 300K, I decided to do the 400K (400 kilometres of cycling in 27 hours including all breaks), that went well too, and next thing I knew I was on the 600K (600 kilometres of cycling in 40 hours including all breaks)! I was hooked! I loved long, long, long distance cycling! I also did a few more centuries and 200K rides on my own throughout that year, just for fun!
Going Long!
I had heard about the Rocky Mountain 1200 (in 2002) and the Paris-Brest-Paris 1200 (in 2003) that year. 1200 kilometres of cycling with a time limit of 90 hours including all breaks!! I really wanted to do the PBP, so I decided to use the RM1200 as a test ride since it was in my country and close to relatives.
I had a plan all worked out for training over the winter prior to it – but that plan came to a screeching halt on November 1st when I dropped a pot of boiling water on my left foot which resulted in a bad 3rd+ degree burn.
I was off my bicycle and off my feet entirely for the next 3 months – so much for training! I couldn’t even lift upper body weights because as soon as my heart rate increased, my foot would swell and become very painful. But the first shoe I tried on when most of the dressings were removed was a cycling shoe! And at the end of February 2002, I finally got back onto my exercise bicycle, and started working diligently to get ready for the RM1200. That experience made me even more determined to do it than ever.
I completed the Rocky Mountain 1200 in 2002, the Paris-Brest-Paris 1200 in 2003, the Great Southern Randonee 1200 in 2004, and the Last Chance Randonnee 1200 in 2005. I have completed brevets of one sort or another every year since 2001, and I’ve also had the opportunity to tour parts of the Australia, Canada, the US, Europe, the UK and Asia. In 2005 and 2006, I raced 24-hour Time Trials which I also thoroughly enjoyed!
This chart shows the total number of each length of event I did up to and including part of 2018.
But cycling long distances was so much more than just turning pedals.
It was fun, adventurous and challenging. It was difficult and pushed me beyond what I thought I could do. It was rewarding, fulfilling. It was my life.
I met wonderful people, many of whom I still count as friends. Best of all, on the 2003 Paris-Brest-Paris, I met the man who would become my husband and we got to know each other on several other long events and training rides in various parts of the world. Cycling long distances was a key part of our relationship.
And Now?
In 2018, my husband had a workplace accident which resulted in a severe traumatic brain injury. Thankfully we are still cycling, but not like we did.
We are still participating in the type of cycling that was our lives by organising and volunteering.
I keep thinking that one day, maybe, I'll try my first 200K again ... my first 200K in 6 years. And I'll begin again ...4 -

Machka Happy belated birthday! Thank you for all of the brain injury information. My DH has one as well from when he wrapped a jeep around a tree at 18 yrs old. It is what cut the optic nerve in one eye. I need to remember that at times. You have helped me in that aspect. Thank you!

Good morning ladies!
Machka yes six months from now I will wish I had started dumbbells again today. I'm getting closer.
Lanette and Barbara, thanks for your encouragement with the phone calls. I did well on closing the credit cards, but still have medical calls to make.
Well, reading your posts when I wake up early takes my mind off of whirling fears, but I can never remember my comments, especially if I go back to sleep.
Today's book section talks about how the first two bites is the best part, and sometimes you can toss the rest. Hmm. It's very hard for me to throw away food. Once it's on my plate, I feel honor bound to make a good faith effort to eat it. At least I understand that part of myself, and so I'm very careful about what I put on my plate.
It seems like the advice in this book is not new. But I am following it to encourage me to stay true to my priorities.
So eat thoughtfully, my friends, and have a great day!

I just bought myself some 4 oz bowls to control portions and a new nonstick skillet to reduce oil. Yay! Now I have to make room!

I was sent a text this morning to have a phone consultation with a ANP on 25th March, about my X-rays, so I went onto the patient portal to see if my results were there.
They were.
Moderate to severe osteoarthritis. Left hip worse than right.
Bones osteopenic.
Subchondral stenosis and marginal osteophyte formation.
Strangely, I've been doing small exercises recommended on YouTube and obeying my osteopath with rest and heat, and the general, walking around the house, pain is improved. I haven't tried a longer walk, but I can feel pain after a hundred yards.
I still have my appointment this afternoon, so will just go along and see what the NP says.
Don't know if I feel relieved or depressed about it.
