APRIL 2024 Monthly Running Challenge
WARNING: Following this thread may be addictive; it gets very talkative...miss a day and you can be 50 posts behind. This is the most popular challenge on MFP. If you found us in the middle (or end) of the month, you're still very welcome to join in - no requirements or special invite needed. Once you post, that's it you're in. And yes, we do this every month.
You set your own pace and distance for the month. We will all be doing it together. This is your virtual running group to help keep you accountable, to enjoy a virtual post-run coffee with your fellow runners, and to make new friends and learn a few things.
This is a continuation from the MARCH 2024 Monthly Running Challenge which can be found at:
https://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/10910407/march-2024-monthly-running-challenge/p1
Anyone can join in, new and old, and if you found this thread late, you can join in at any time.
We have members ranging from total beginners all the way to Boston Qualifiers and beyond. We are a friendly and encouraging bunch. You never need to be ashamed of your miles. If you are making the effort, you will find only support here.
Here are the details from last month that apply again:
Anybody want to join in for a running challenge? Set a goal here and update us every day. OPTIONAL: You can post your progress by creating a ticker at http://www.tickerfactory.com (if creating one seems difficult, or you're like me and can't be bothered, then just type in your daily miles in this thread).
You can run, walk, or do treadmill - just be consistent. Don't let the high (or low) goals of others intimidate you. Some do 25 miles, others do 50, some go higher than that, some do lower; it's entirely your goal and therefore completely up to you. We help motivate each other, so what do you say? If you're new to running, set a low goal. If you're from a part of the world where miles aren't your thing, log your distances in KMs. And if you'd rather log your progress by time rather than distance, then you're entirely free to do that as well.
Feel free to set your goal now but wait until APRIL 1, 2024 to start logging your runs!
Also, don't forget to join our group which can be found at:
https://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/group/21182-monthly-running-challenges
Bookmark the previous and past challenges: https://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/10393468/current-past-challenges#latest
Find a small group of runners that encourage and offer food support:
https://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/10573619/runners-that-need-some-nutritional-accountability#latest
Note: we also have a group on Strava and Facebook.
After you run, come into this thread and post what you did (don't forget to hit the bookmark in the upper right corner to bookmark this thread). Simply keep a running tally of what you've done this month and interact with the others. Many folks come in here and chit-chat it up, even on their rest days or while recouping from injury. This is a very social group and we talk about many things (sometimes even about running). It's a very friendly bunch here so don't be afraid to say hi (even if this is your first time), talk about a recent or up-coming race, ask questions, provide answers, or just lurk-n-learn. Participation is what makes this group successful.
Not quite sure how to log your runs? Follow the examples of many other challenge members. Even take a peek at last month's thread (posted above).
*******OPTIONAL TICKER*************
Info on tickers since I know there will be questions. Sign up for an account at http://www.tickerfactory.comandcreate your ticker. Then you need to update it after you finish a run and post it here. Here is what you will need to do.
After setting up your ticker, you will need to make note of the weblink they give you so you can return. An example would be:
http://www.tickerfactory.com/exercise/w6K1EiX/ <<<< the last part will be a part of the image link (explained below) that will be supplied to you after you initially create your link.
When you return to TickerFactory with the weblink, go to your settings page. Make sure you type your PIN in that you set when you created your ticker account. Then, where it says "Your current cumulative value", there is an add button. Simply add the distance that you just did, and the cumulative value automatically changes. Then hit next.
After adding your new miles (or KMs) to your ticker, you need to post it here.
After you hit next, it will give you a bunch of codes suggesting how to display your ticker.
Use the one at the bottom where it says Direct Image URL:
It will look something like:
http://tickers.TickerFactory.com/ezt/t/w6K1EiX/exercise.png
To display that correctly in your post, make sure you place the image (img) tags around that link. So it will look something like the following (but removing the spaces in the img tags):
[ img ] http://tickers.TickerFactory.com/ezt/t/w6K1EiX/exercise.png [ /img ]
^^^^^^^ Don't forget to remove the spaces between the brackets ^^^^^^^^^^
Some key things to pay attention to when posting your ticker:
Use the link that ends in .png
Remember the [ img] and [ /img] tags go in between the link
Remove the spaces in the img tags before posting
YES, there is a / in the second /img tag
By the way, everyone here should consider themselves a runner no matter how fast or slow. There's no judgment, we all started somewhere. And no comparisons, except with your former self. Don't compare your Chapter 1 to somebody else’s Chapter 20.

You may see some phrases / words that are unique to our little group when it comes to describing some of our runs. It is a mash-up of words that seem to best describe the way the run felt that day. Here are some examples. Feel free to come up with your own to add to the dictionary 😃

'sneasy' - Slow Not Easy
'scrappy' - mix of Slow and Crappy

Once again, no monthly goal. I am doing a race weekend at Disney world with my friend and just getting some runs in here and there.9

Started my taper so looking at 80 miles for April. Biggest thing is to get round London.7
-
I‘m not quite sure about my mileage goal for April, as I probably won’t be running too much post marathon and will be prepping for my road bike race. I’m going to say 200km .6
-
Goal is still 400 miles for the month.
I have to work on slowing my pace down to decrease the impact I make with the ground. I was diagnosed with Osteoporosis this past week and running is not the 'best' thing to be doing besides 'don't fall.' I have never been 'fast/speedy' so that is not so hard to slow it down.8 -
Thank you for setting up April @AlphaHowls!!
My April goal is 50 miles.
After my April 20th 10K I’m going to slow down on miles a bit and focus more on weight loss.8 -
Thanks for setting April's thread up @AlphaHowls . Would trail running be better for you?
I'm not sure what to set for a goal this month. I keep saying that I want to do strength training, but never take a step in that direction. Well, that ends tomorrow. I have an appointment with the owner of a small gym in town in the morning. I've heard great things about it....personal training for everyone and they make sure they keep an eye on everyone working out to correct any problems with form. So, we shall see. I hope I like it. Not sure how many days a week they suggest...I'm assuming maybe three. I'm guessing that will cut in on my running time, but it may actually energize me to run. I still plan on keeping the streak going, with at least a mile per day...hopefully 2 miles. Just to throw something out there, I'm going to say 65 miles of running and fast walking.5 -
Thanks for setting this up again @AlphaHowls!!
I am having a bit of a tough time with the new treatment regimen that pretty much has me at medical appointments 4-5 days a week so I have no clue how much I will be able to get out. I also realize that I am not going to be able to run again at least anytime in the near term. I did hear on a webinar from a survivor who ran all through his treatments. I would love to know how he was able to do that.
I am not setting a goal but will just try to get out as often as possible.10 -

From 2012, results of "trail" walking
*WARNING GRAPHIC*Right wrist, metal plate, 8 screws
Do not be 'surprised' by the osteoporosis diagnosis. Many of you, only know me as a long distance runner. Before I started my journey:
Obese class II
22 years heavy smoker
Rarely exercised
Years of hormones due to heavy, uncontrollable menstrual cycles
Kidney issues, not absorbing calcium (I am full of stones), no enamel on my teeth
Neuropathy in my feet, I do not pick up my feet that much, hence how I fall quite a bit
and so on and so forth...

Missed my arbitrary March goal of 100 miles by a measly 5k, but as I thought I’d missed it by 20-plus kilometres I’m happy.
I stated this month with a paltry 5km but that’s because I spent about 12 hours over Thursday, Friday and Saturday weeding and raking my entire 100sqm lawn, then filled a few low spots with a cubic metre of lawn leveling soil (another half a cube coming tomorrow). I didn’t think it was particularly challenging work but boy was I shattered each evening and spent two hours every night rolling my tired legs and hammies. I woke each morning with a very stiff back but soon loosened up.
On Sunday we had my husband’s parents over for lunch and after they left I had a nap and slept for three hours (this is phenomenal considering I never sleep during the day). I obviously needed it.
Today I just took it easy. Gentle run. Made a whole lot of pumpkin soup. And a little bit of gentle gardening at about 5pm. Hoping to wake full of beans tomorrow to get the last of the work on the lawn done - that last bit of leveling, an over sow, and done fertiliser. It’s that time of year here when a bunch of maintenance jobs need doing to prep the garden for winter and next spring!8 -
Hi, put me down for 130 again4
-
April 1 - 3.31 miles
I'm planning at least one weekend this month of hiking on the AT instead of running so I'm aiming for 90 miles.
Hope things are looking better for you @AlphaHowls and @kgirlhart.
Welcome to America @tarun_yadavA!4 -
@Teresa502 thank you!!! 😊
Driving to Asheville later 😊3 -

@7lenny7 AHH! missed me by 50 miles, I am up in Clarksville, TN

Hi everyone! Taper officially started. I thought I would get my tempo run out of the way after checking my weather app and seeing that there wasn’t much wind. It was wet and rainy but I hit my splits really well and surprised myself with how fast the run was. I ran 9km.
@AlphaHowls im sorry to hear about your diagnosis. I think you are doing the best you can to ensure that you can run at the least impact to your body.
@7lenny7 It sounds like you are having quite a running adventure trip! It sounds wonderful!
@TheMrWobbly i think you made a good decision turning ending the 20 miler a bit early. You definitely don’t want to get hurt this close out. It’s no fun! I am sooooo glad my body is now fully operational .4 -
01.04 1.0km 7min 7:28/km - something
1.00km/80.5km
Checking in for this month. Just wanted to know whether I'm able to run without pain again after having a deep incision in my thigh muscle. Yep, works. Weather was rather shite this evening: pretty much horizontal rain, thus i only wanted to know whether this works or not.6 -
Goal 20 miles. Way out of shape and hoping to slowly improve.
4/1 1.5 miles8 -
Hi all, I would like to get back to running so I thought this group might help with motivation. I might be a bit out of shape and have limited time for it, so I will set a goal of 30km for April7
-
Hello April.
I am trying for 50 miles again this month.
I ran twice today. This morning at the park as usual.
This afternoon I felt the urge to go out for a run and ran from my house up to the main road. The main road from our house goes up a good hill most of the way. At the top of the hill are a restaurant, hotel, couple of stores type of place. I ran around them and they started back and nearly home was a bar. It is a dive bar type of place and I stopped in and had a beer. Then I ran the rest of the way home and sat down and fell asleep.
A good day, all in all.
4/1 - 2.14 Miles. Lakefront Park, 36F, Mostly Cloudy. 7:10 am.
4/1 - 1.35 Miles. Up the Hill. 48F Sunny. 12:26 pm.8 -
@AlphaHowls thanks for setting up April. Sorry to hear about your health issues. You are one of the toughest humans I know, and if there is any way to find a way to run, I know you'll figure it out. And if there isn't, you will figure something out to keep you going. Wishing you all the best. Big HUGS!
@TheMrWobbly you made a good call cutting your 20 miler. You'll be fine. The taper will do wonders for you.
@tarun_yadavA I see you are making the most of your American tour so far Hope you continue to have a great time here!
We had a good time visiting my son in Austin, and meeting his GF parents for the first time. They are very nice. Much more outgoing than we are, but you kinda need those kind of people in your life
I didn't quite embarrass myself on the golf course, but didn't exactly light it up either. But it was fun.
Going to shoot for 125 miles this month.
So easing back into it after almost a full week of not running due to life, got it 4 TM miles.
