Barbie: Many thanks for the new May thread.
I have been finishing a few projects this last week, and working on getting to bed earlier, so time on line has been brief.
April was a good month goal wise. Continued to work on refining solid habits, maintaining well within weight range, and staying active.
May goals are the same as April.

- Logic would suggest that I have found a natural comfortable weight, and, according to modern BMI calculation, I am in the upper range of normal for my age and height. However, logic doesn't always dictate our desires and feelings. 😂
- Getting and staying healthy and fit requires the development of a permanent lifestyle reset.
- Replacing unhelpful habits with more useful ones is key to to the process.
- Losing weight is only one of the elements.
- Eating healthy and staying actively is not OPTIONAL, but an ABSOLUTE ESSENTIAL.
REMINDERS One or two thoughts on weight which might give heart to some of you.- Daily weight fluctuations are normal, and can be several lbs a day for no apparent reason.
- A general downward trend is what we are looking for.
- Eating out can cause apparent weight gain because of high sodium levels, but usually goes quickly. Drinking extra water helps with this.
- The human body does not react instantly to what we do to it. Sometimes it can take several days to see results.
- Plateaus are a normal part of the process. The body is consolidating and adapting to your new way of eating/exercising.
- The closer you get to your goal weight, the more difficult it becomes to lose weight, as your body becomes more efficient at using what you feed it.
- When you exercise you build muscle, which takes up less space than fat, so use measurements as well as weight to assess your progress.
- Getting/Staying fit and healthy requires a permanent lifestyle change for most people.
It’s a bank holiday weekend here so will catch up with reading.

Rosemarie from GA: Dawn Chorus is what happens as the birds wake up as day breaks. It was an organised walk at dawn with an expert to identify the different bird songs we heard. It was organised by Ulster Wildlife Trust.
Lisa: Your posts are so entertaining. You have such a wonderful way of expressing yourself, no matter what the subject.
Breathing: I am a great believer in deep breathing practices. I have been practicing yoga since my late 20s, and breathing meditations are part of my everyday life. I like to saturate my body with oxygen 😂 first thing each morning and last thing at night.
Rusty: in Yorkshire. It’s great fun playing around with the digital art. Love the flower pic. Baby steps are the way to go. And I found concentrating on one change at a time works well. I also use Atomic Habits principles. Healing thoughts for your son.

Morning, my chickens... from the not-quite-dawn of the Arkansas River Valley,
Up by 5 a.m., much more my usual, but my weight went up by a pound and a half, and that is usually the signal that my gut will be having its way with me this morning. We'll see how things go. If it's not today, it will be tomorrow, which I'd rather it wait, in all honesty.
It's possible our son and his fiancée will drive down from Fayetteville today, but the pre-excuse was "if it's not raining too hard," and there's a rainstorm coming in about three hours or so. Fair chance they won't make it down, and that's OK either way. It's about an hour and a half drive, on a highway that's 75 miles per hour maximum, but most people treat it like a minimum, even on the rainy days. Would like to see them, but don't want them to get out there if they don't feel confident driving in the rain, that's just a recipe for disaster.
Egg has been spectacularly social - my friends are cat people, and in fact, their cat Sophie travels with them in the camper trailer, and is just as anti-social as Egg usually is. In the end, it took Egg until last night, their third night here, to get near them, but by the end of the evening, she was requesting pets from them. She has never gotten adjusted to strangers that quickly. Made Corey really happy - he hates it when his cat is upset.
And speaking of Egg, she was just yowling him to wake up. While she understands time, and when he usually has to be out of the house, she doesn't quite understand days of the week, and that Saturday and Sunday he can sleep in. By 4:30, she's yelling at the door, and by 5:30, it's a yowl. He's ignoring her, so she's wandered off now.
Rebecca - thank you so much for that comment on my husband's eyes. His eyes are what I always look at, too, and why he attracted me so much. He always looks at my lips to see how I'm feeling.
Terri - What a lovely compliment. I find life to be entertaining, overall, and am pleased that shows in my posts.
Kay - Yah, drama isn't my favorite thing, but I am usually able to regard things as humorous rather than dramatic in retrospect. Doesn't mean they're not quite stress-filled at the time! I even remember saying "We'll all look back at this and laugh," in the middle of all that flapdoodle.
Machka - Love that peacock picture, you did an amazing job on a very detailed piece. Funny that it doesn't want to photograph, it's picking up every reflected light for some reason. Still shows up as beautiful, even so.
Reading everything, as always, sending much love to those who need it. Got my yoga done on Friday morning, but skipped yesterday. Need to go ahead and do it this morning, but will wait on my friend, who wants to work out with me. She's four years younger than I am, but not as flexible. Should be interesting.
Love y'all,
Later,
Lisa in AR

https://www.healthline.com/health/depression/sugar-and-depression This may be my reason for depression right now. Eating too much white carbs. I don’t have sugar in my house, but all the sugar we get is through fruit and white flours (donuts, cookies, etc). I am really bad this morning, so really have to rein this in. I need to get back to Low care High fat eating. Carbs and protein for me, are bad. Gaining weight and just feeling yucky.
Blood work this week and therapist. I will mention it to her. Also have the vet for my two fur babies on Monday. I’ll see what the bloodwork shows. I have not been eating well lately. Or walking as much as I should. My BP is normal now, but not my brain.

Rita ~ That's an interesting article on sugar linking to depression.
I cut about 4 inches off my shoulder length hair this morning and it looks more like the photo attached to my sign in! I may have to go to Great Clips tomorrow to get the back fixed a bit but the front looks OK.
Going with DH to his primary dr. tomorrow. He feels so bad that he is afraid he will be put in the hospital. I think most of the problem is his cardiac peripheral vascular disease and just pray that he will get the help he needs.

When I was in my 30's my first marriage was falling apart and my husband was running amok. I had no idea what the future would bring and felt completely powerless. That's when I learned a gratitude practice that has continued to serve me well in all circumstances. When I had a few quiet moments I would tell myself all the things that were right with my life--I am fully dressed, I have more clothes in the closet. I ate breakfast, I have more food in the house, I have a house and this month's payment has been made, I have a job and they respect me at work, I am healthy, I have friend I can call, etc. It has saved me from going down the rabbit hole of despair and depression over and over since then.
Right now, I have a host of "procrasticlutter" that needs to be addressed---laundry to fold, sheets to change, bathroom sinks to wash. I'll get to it all in a minute. I'd rather be outside in the yard pulling weeds but the wet ground and threat of rain will make that something not pleasant to do. Instead, I'll take a minute to tell you all that you mean a lot to me and I'm glad you are in my life. Next I'll write a note to my friend who getting treatments for cancer. Today is her birthday and I know she could use something cheery.

Rita - do you have a preferred range of carbs that you want to stick to? I aim for under 80 net carbs, and of course that's eliminating the white starchy stuff. I can still manage a handful of berries and small apple without doing too much damage but boy, those carbs sure add up don't they?
I wanted to thank you for telling us about DietDoctor.com a while back with the in-depth information about various forms of low/lower carb eating.
I haven't tried cauliflower rice before but plan to pick some up next time I'm at the store. I see on the Walmart website they have organic in the frozen section. Might be the best value for me since I don't want to mess with a whole head of it.
I need to do more of what Lisa does with cooking up a bunch of burger and adding taco seasoning or something to spice it up a bit. Keep up with the protein.
Lisa - loved the photo of you, Corey and your friends. (Agree about his eyes!! ) I know you'll have fun with them while they are there.
Heard from my sis, they have decided to stay in a motel when they come in July, as they'd originally planned, rather than at my house. They gave some thought to my warning about vocal Rosie. They used to have a yappy dog and were always yelling "shut up!". I told sis Rosie thinks that's her middle name, so probably a wise decision on their part.
Barbie - thank you for the reminder about focusing on things to be grateful for when our lives take a worrisome turn.
When I start worrying about overwhelming tasks around this place or a situation I can't control, I remind myself "what we think about expands". In other words, think about how much I've been able to accomplish or how much I'm able to have control over my diet, walking, and what I choose to read and view. The good things remind me of more good things. If I focus on the negative, a small worry becomes huge and wrecks my day.
Barbie - I think it was you who posted something to the effect that the more we give thanks, the more we'll have to be thankful for. Wise words.
Carol - glad your DH is going to the doctor tomorrow and that you'll be going with him. Crossing fingers the doc can get him fixed up, and ease any unnecessary worry for both of you.
Weekly Check-In reminder - please get your info to me today or by noon tomorrow.

Barbie I call it being aware of the muck. Gratitude and focusing on what you can do to make your life and health better is what keeps the muck from pulling you down.2

I mix half cauliflower rice with regular white(Japanese) rice when I make fried rice and neither son or dh can tell the difference.
I cook ground turkey in bulk- half I add taco seasoning and half Italian herb or Asian(soy, ginger, garlic)- put in ziplock bags for quick toppings for my salads or to add to some veggies or in tacos.
Heading to church- sunny but chilly at just 50. Walked around barefoot for a few minutes and now my toes are hurting(Reynauds acting up)burning/hurting/itching. Have fuzzy socks on with my dress shoes- cant tell, my dress is long and covers it.
May work in the garden later- depends on how wet it is- it poured most of yesterday.

I make turkey burgers. I mix one pound of ground turkey with an egg, two TBS of matzo meal, and a tsp of a spicy spice. I divide the mixture into 5 patties and freeze them individually so I can defrost them one or two at a time

My son rang this evening to invite us to Nando's tomorrow early dinner, for Max's birthday. I said that it wouldn't suit us, as we were going out for lunch with John's younger daughter. Short notice! We will see them Tuesday, as I will get a taxi over, and we are babysitting on Friday, when they go out for a very delayed birthday meal for DDIL. Then he sent us some pictures of Max having the cake that my son made. They are sending some over tomorrow.
He obviously loves his hat!
The plan was for John and his daughter to go out for a walk in the morning and then I would meet them in the restaurant. Unfortunately, it's going to be raining! So she is coming here when she has to check out at 11. That means I will have to get ready earlier and tidy up a little bit. It's not in a bad state, but I like to spruce a bit. So not quite so relaxing as I thought. We will have anniversary present opening in the morning, but will have to get a move on. Not thrilled, but I'm sure it will be fine.
Carol - I hope your husband can get the help he needs.
Love to all, Heather UK xxxxxxxx

Terri - I forgot to mention how much I appreciate when you give details about what you've done to stay on track with keeping your weight under control. Good advice for newbies and great reminders for those of us not-so-new.
Debbie - great suggestions for mixing cauliflower rice and white rice. I read somewhere that Jasmine and Basmati rice have lesser of a glycemic load that some other rices. I miss those fragrant rices. I've sometimes packaged browned turkey or chicken or burger in smaller packages like that, but have never done it already seasoned. Neat idea!
Barbie - great idea with the turkey burger. I'll grab some next time I'm at the store. After cooking for what, over 50 years, I run out of ideas even though I have a big shelf of cookbooks and every recipe imaginable here at my fingertips on the internet! I guess I just like hearing what other folks are making. I've never used Matzo Meal so looking forward to it.
Heather - Max looks so grown up in his hat, what a handsome kid. Beautiful cake! Did I count 14 candles?

I prefer just about any rice over the Japanese sticky rice but that is the only kind dh eats(and he would eat it every day if he could which is NOT a good thing for a diabetic) I really like wild rice or brown rice- at least there is texture and flavor with them. Only time I cook other white rice is if I am making fried rice(you can make it with left over Japanese rice but texture is different and you really have to fry it a lot to get it right), or in chicken and rice- again. Texture thing.
I get ground turkey on great sales and will cook it all at one time- one pan, less clean up, plus quick meals using it.4 -
