WOMEN AGES 50+FOR MAY 2024

Aon here, age 53 in AZ. I just finished the last full semester of my MSW grad program, and although I've maintained over the last two years of school, this final 2 months I felt like a log jam in a flash flood, and late night study sessions ended with middle of the night meals (cause I hadn't eaten in 6 or 7 hours by 3 am).
Glad to be here with you gals. I can't wait to read your stories.
Well done!
I graduated with my Master's degree in 2020 at the age of 53. We're never too old for more education!

I hope my husband's "symptoms" settle down once we're settled.
Today I figured out what he wanted to do with the shed in the back yard! I finally got it!Because of his brain injury, problem solving is much, much slower than it was prior to his injury. He's tenacious, so he will usually get there eventually, but what used to take no time at all, can take weeks now. (I just have to be patient) But sometimes, he gets stuck and really struggles to figure it out. When that happens, sometimes he'll figuratively toss it in the "too hard" basket and won't do it - which means I will have to do it. Or sometimes I can see that he's spinning his wheels and getting nowhere, so I'll try to think of creative ways to give him ideas that might help.
Creative ideas include taking him to a garden centre or Tip Shop or somewhere to see things or sending him pictures I've seen on FB or something.
He also has aphasia (likely Wernicke’s aphasia given that he has a lot of damage in his left temporal lobe and area). So he has difficulty reading and understanding instructions, and he has difficulty explaining his ideas to me. When he gets really tired, he has difficulty putting a coherent sentence together. The more tired he gets, the less understandable he is - the more he uses made-up words or the wrong words because his brain can't pick the right word. It can be challenging to translate!
https://www.healthline.com/health/wernickes-aphasia
https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/wernickes-aphasia#definition
Fortunately, (even though I didn't understand what he was thinking) I did help him when he was spinning his wheels last week by taking him to the Tip Shop on the weekend. I took him there and told him to look around until he saw something that might work for him. He found it almost immediately. He knew more or less what he was looking for even though he couldn't express it.
So he has been trying to explain what needs to happen in the garden, but I didn't translate it correctly until today! I was in the shower this morning when the light bulb suddenly came on and I figured out why he bought what he did at the Tip Shop!
Whew! Now I can help him because I get it.

Flea herbs like rosemary, lavender are mediterranean plants so they don't need much water. Basil likes to stay moist and likes some shelter from intense sun. I pot mine separately from other herbs for this reason. When about 4-6 inches cut off tops to get it to fill out and not go to seed.
If I want it handy I will cut off a sprig and put it in a small glass of water. If the house is too warm I will put this in the fridge. I do this with asparagus to keep it fresher. I do not grow things only in water to eat. The soil if it has not been treated with herbicides has microbes that we need for our health.2 -
Had no inspiration at all for our painting session. Tired, in pain, and no enthusiasm. Decided to do it anyway as the first step is the hardest.
As we were unpacking our art supplies, and deciding what needed to be thrown away, I spied the gold bottle I bought last year. Thought I could just have fun with that, so painted some gold leaves. And so on ........and so on.....
Ended up with this, that I'm calling 'Pondlife'.
The colours and the metallics are much brighter in real life. Not something I would submit to the Royal Academy, but OK for a very reluctant start.
Now for a nap.

Welcome to the new ladies.
Today we are having our big monthly management meeting and the new CEO is here. He started yesterday and looks so much younger than I expected. Guess he has a good background for the job.
So far he seems ok, at least he has said good morning the last couple days instead of just walking by like we are not here.

Sometimes, we need to take the first step, no matter how hard it is. Goes for crafts, art, exercise, reading, writing, anything. I was able to write some yesterday because “I just did it”. Decided to start and see where it goes. Worked to finish my third chapter. I do this when I need to walk and just about anything. The “Just Do It” slogan Nike has is very apt. Once you start, put that first foot in the walking shoes, or the first word on the computer (paper), or begin the exercise routing, the rest follows easily. I really need to listen to my own advice! I need to move more and my therapist gave me a goal of doing some real exercise, besides walking this month. I have the Silver Sneakers app and have yet to start using it! It is hot already this morning being 77 degrees at 8:30 am so I must get going before it does get too hot!! I don’t have much room in the camper to exercise but can manage to do yoga in it if my DH is not here. I need the whole hallway to do it. I am too self conscious to do it outside where people can see me. I’ve seen other campers do it, I know I can but have to get over my embarrassment.
I old enough now to not have to explain myself, right??

Good morning ladies!
Beth - thinking of you this morning, hope all goes well with the "turn on".
After over a week of wearing my left-ear hearing aid, I had to remove it early because the top of my ear was so sore from the eyeglass ear piece pressing on it for 8-10 hours at a time. I tried three different pairs of glasses yesterday, all hurt. Not giving it up entirely, just will wear it daily until the ear gets too sore. And wear it when I'm with others so I can hear them better.
Mo - sorry to hear about that fractured foot! Didn't you say you are an RN? If so are you doing a desk job? Sounds like you live in a beautiful area right now.
Tracey - hope you can knock that cold and finish your practicum OK. Sounds like you had a wonderful Mother's Day! Again, neat cards. I saw a report about parts of Canada -BC I think - being on fire again. Wow. Hope the smoke isn't too bad, guess it's hitting part of the northern midwestern US as well.
Diabetes Prevention class yesterday was good, went over our goals and just more housekeeping. I will need to weigh once a week and report that to the group leader who's a Registered Dietician (RD) and also keep track of activity by minutes. I can guesstimate how much power walking I do, and I can now add in weed eating, pruning and other outside/gardening chores. It's a year long class because we should be well on our way to better habits and some weight loss goals in the first 6 months. The second 6 months is about staying on track. Great concept.
She's going to email more info today, and I will share what I can.
Time to head outside and get in some activity. I have a big "to-do" list.

Up early but feel pretty rested. A bit chilly at 56 right now- cats aren't even up yet(well, they weren't when I got out of bed). I am sure they will get up if I go back in there. Dh is still sleeping.
Have been enjoying my quiet time with a cup of tea. Need to make a second one, and feed the cats, then wait for dh to get up/bathroom/shower/etc so I have about an hour.
Only plans I know of today, at least for me, is walk MIL's dog for half an hour and later, work in the garden. I really need to finish. I didn't work in it yesterday. Not sure what dh has planned.
I did get 15,000 steps in though with walking the dog, shopping and zumba last night.
Tuesdays are the only day I don't have extra exercise planned(zumba M/W, wetlands walk Th/F) so it is a perfect day to weed/chain saw so I can get the weed block down and plant the rest of the garden so I can give away what plants I won't be planting.

Heather - Loving the leaves...
Rita - The answer is "YES, you are old enough that you do not have to explain yourself." I did not want to do yoga this morning, I was a little ouchy still, and my gut hadn't settled down yet, and I was hungry and I did everything I could, from laundry to dishes to making pesto and filling the bird feeders, and used every excuse in the book. And then I turned on the music anyway, and slung my yoga mat out on the floor. And I started. And I just finished. I did not want to in any way shape or form. But you're right, I "just did it."

Time to eat something...

Hi all
I am tired today work is tough at the moment for me there seem to have been a spate of very difficult cases one in particular kept me awake last night. Sometimes its harder to compartmentalise things.
Heather that is lovely!
I literally add basil to every other supermarket order as I can barely keep it alive for a fortnight I have a black thumb, not greenfingers

Today I had to go into the base clinic for bloodwork. Just because I was renewing a blood pressure prescription. Easy peasy. I had to arise at 6:30 am to go in with husband to the gym first though. I walked 1.5 miles before the lab. Not too bad. I showed up, which is half the battle. I might even go again tomorrow. I will get up at 6 am so I can sip a cup of coffee first though!
Rest of this week is quiet. No workmen until next week.

Today’s gratitude: Today’s lunch date with Dr. A and T cancelled. Grateful I don’t have their stomach bug.
Flea my basil think’s I’m Michele ;}. Let me know what works for you?
Beth Fingers X’d for today’s activation.
Machka will you get new baseboards? Thanks for the Happy Chemicals graphic. Hope the dental work goes smoothly and painlessly. Please share with us the solution to Rowan’s gardening mystery?
Tracey hope you can find a line dance class nearby to try. For me it is fun, good aerobic exercise, and filled with good humor and kind people. Is the Delton Community League anywhere nearby? Monique how did you break your foot?
Belated welcome @4Aon in Az and congratulations on completing your MSW!
Heather my basil is very very leggy. Do you pinch yours back? What besides garlic, parmesan and oil do you put in with your basil for pesto? Hydroponic? Then is it possible I’m not overwatering?
Allie hope your Dr.’s appointments went well.
Lisa ah, pine nuts, I forgot. If Joe’s eaten all his, I’ll try walnuts in my mini batch of pesto. Thanks!
Margaret thanks for the “Basil likes to stay moist and likes some shelter from intense sun. ,,, When about 4-6 inches cut off tops to get it to fill out and not go to seed” tips!!!
Vicki hope the new CEO gets your department some depth. Worried about the hours you have to work to cover.
Rita “JDI” is so apt. Didn’t know there was a free Silver Sneakers app, thanks!
Lanette that sounds like a great program. Well done!
Rusty shooshing you comfort as you struggle to compartmentalize that difficult case.
Rebecca one of the Norska ladies sang the lefse song as part of our church’s international festival fundraiser years ago. Actually the lefsa the other ladiess made was quite tasty with butter and lingonberry jam. You went to the gym? Not bad at all, well done!
So now its my turn to get up from this chair, and doo all the things I can find to do to put off the PT exercises ;{

I'm reading Atomic Habits after all this time. I reckoned I didn't need to read it as I'm following all the principles anyway. But I do find it confirming to see it in black and white.
The principle of just starting is so important. With my writing, I just think, I know how to turn the computer on etc. With painting I just make a mark. With exercising I just get down on the floor
My old theatre mentor used to say, you don't need a destination, just a starting point and a method of exploration. That applies to everything. Especially creative work. But also life choices.

Hello folks
Well i went to the Fat dr.. and they gave me a script for Trulicity so here is hoping this will jump start on the weight loss. And went to the Gastrointestinal Dr.and they gave me a script for Gerd..
Stopped to see the little guy and brought him his gifts from the Cape..2 -
son has caught 3 of the four. They are in a tote in his room- very friendly for feral kittens. Fostering them for now.
Every few years or so, cats come, have kittens in our yard.
Usually we keep them but we can't keep four more.

Odd afternoon, never really got it together. As soon as I was beginning to, Corey called and said he was on his way home, so I made pasta with pesto and sausages - he likes big, honking greasy cajun sausages, and I eat a small skinless one... It was yummy, in the end. I'd do that again. Felt incredibly healthy, but probably not exactly low calorie, in the end. Serious fun, first, eating a plant, and then eating a dish made with a plant I grew. I don't eat much that's green, but I'm trying to change that...
Later,
Love,

Heather - I bet you are anxious to be back to yourself again.
I think your painting is pretty.
Machka - I studied Wernicke’s Aphasia in school. It’s great that the light bulb came on for you so that you are able to help him easier.
Rita - I have a terrible time exercising in front of others.
I get it.
The teacher that uses the “day of…” for attendance asked the class to tell her what year the chicken dance was released today. They were guessing the 80’s and 90’s. It was 1957. They thought the 80’s because it’s an “old” song.
Lanette - it was terribly smoky here on Saturday due to the fires in BC. Fort McMurray, here in Northern Alberta was just evacuated a couple hours ago again. I hope that they are doing it early enough this time. In 2016 it was left too long, although everyone evacuated it was a close terrifying time for them.
I hope you can figure out the hearing aid time so it doesn’t cause pain.
Barbara - thanks for the line dancing location. That is actually about 45 minutes from me. I actually live in a city south of Edmonton.
Just Starting - I know that is one of my biggest problems. I always do so well once I get going. It seems though that if something throws me off course once I get started I end up taking forever to get going again.
Debbie - I don’t know how you handle all of the cats.
Terri - I don’t think I could do one of those mystery puzzles. One of the students in the inclusive class does a 1000 piece puzzle about one a week.
Lisa - I just have to say that you and others who have talked about their “fussiness” for different foods has made me not feel so ashamed when I say it about myself. I was always made to feel weird and hard to get along with because of my food habits.
Speaking of food, one of the jobs in the inclusive class is for the students to fill the vending machine. I helped them today and these kids impress me all the time. Once they are done they are allowed a bag of chips for a treat, one boy chose a new flavour called “Spicy Dill Pickle”, he mentioned a few times while eating them that they were spicy and he drank half his large water bottle, but still ate every one and the spices that fell to the bottom of the bag. When he was down he told me he had a spicy problem. 😂
Tomorrow is my last day at this school. Today for LA we watched The Outsiders movie from 1983. These kids were not impressed with how many things they felt were important from the book were left out of the movie. The teacher challenged one boy to grow up to be a director and try to make another one.
I felt old seeing Tom Cruise, Patrick Swayze, Rob Lowe and more as young again.
I stopped at Costco on the way home from work and picked up a nice skort for 15.99. I bought and Olive green colour, I may go back and get a navy one.
I’m off to have a bath. Still not feeling 100% although I did feel much better this morning. Hopefully tomorrow is a good day as well.

This came up on my FB which triggered a question from someone about how many seasons I had. That got me to thinking ...
Season 1 would have been the time period up to age 20.
In Season 2, I was married to my first husband and struggling financially. That was my 20s.
Season 3 was a transition season - travelling, getting my Bachelor of Education etc.
In Season 4, I married my current husband and moved to Australia. We did a Round the World trip and I started my Master's degree.
And Season 5 start with a bang when my current husband had the accident!
Heh! I could create a TV series. But I'm not sure anyone would watch it.

I feel like I've been hit on the jaw ... I'm bruised. She had to dig down under the gum to try to shore up the tooth in preparation for the crown.
Between that flu shot and the dental work, I was a zombie at work today.
We'll reuse as much of the baseboards as we can.
The garden mystery ...Most yards around here are sloped. Our current place is on quite a steep slope. The new yard is at a slight slope. So he wanted to create a flat area for the shed. He talked about moving dirt from our current place, and was talking about bricks and cement blocks. I presumed he was planning to build up an area. But nope, he's planning to dig down. At no point did he use the word "dig". And we won't be moving dirt from our current place, and we won't be using bricks or cement blocks. What gave it away was him saying something about holding up the fence, although that confused me for a while!
When it dawned on me, I drew a diagram and confirmed. The diagram is not to scale but it conveys the idea.

Tracey - I haven't shared all my food fussiness by any means. A short list:
- I like the taste of onions, but hate the texture, so Corey's learned when he's cooking for me to chop them up very small or very large so I can pick them out.
- You already know that green vegetables taste like bitter dirt to me.
- I despise green peppers in particular, they take over everything they get close to, and I don't like the flavor to begin with.
- If I eat lettuce or spaghetti they have to be chopped up very small so they don't stick and make me upchuck later (for those who are new, I had a gastric bypass in 2005).
- Any kind of meat I do eat has to have some kind of sauce with it, or I also have issues with them sticking.
- I do not like bone-in or skin on chicken, hate the tendons and bits and weird bones, they make me gag. Most of the time, I prefer not to know what the chicken used it for while they were alive. Pretty much the same with cows, too. Much prefer ground beef to any other kind of beef.
- Won't eat hot spices like peppers, but do like horseradish, especially in cocktail sauce.
- Cooked fruit is generally nasty. I've learned to put some in cookies for the moisture they bring, but will often pick them out as it's like biting into a blister. Urk.
- On the other hand, I crave salt, and can literally sprinkle it on my hand and lick it.
- I crave sugar, as well, but the gastric bypass left me with a bad reaction to it. Still eat it on occasion, but I do it knowing full well I'll pay for it in the end.
- I am also vividly and stinkily lactose intolerant, as well. Unfortunately, lactaid and beano and the like all make me feel like I have to fart and I can't, and it just gets horrible.
That's all I can think of at the moment.
Whoops, really didn't mean to write a book on that one. Any other fussy eaters?
Hopefully a more productive day ahead. Chillier outside than it was yesterday, so I need to get myself occupied inside this morning. The only excitement this week is my second Skyrizi infusion on Friday. Not sure if there's a third one coming or if I'll move to home injections starting in June. Should know before I leave there Friday. The gastro office is not good about making sure their patients know what happens next with their care, so I have to find out where I can.
Later, my punkins,
Lisa in AR
