Aon here, age 53 in AZ. I just finished the last full semester of my MSW grad program, and although I've maintained over the last two years of school, this final 2 months I felt like a log jam in a flash flood, and late night study sessions ended with middle of the night meals (cause I hadn't eaten in 6 or 7 hours by 3 am). Anyway. I'm at 211 today, here to lose the 10 pounds I gained lately, and then make it to my goal of 171 (where I was last at 18% bodyfat and stinking strong and fit. Won't be that way now, 15 yrs later with a lot less muscle)...but that's a good goal to shoot for, then go from there.
By-the-way, I'm trying for 1900 calories per day as that seems to be the amount that keeps from making cortisol from eating too little food as we age. Too little calories makes us older gals hold on to fat better. Also trying for 23 min of moderate heart rate raise per day also strategized for keeping less stress and therefore less cortisol production; (or a 15 minute HIT workout- because I love them).
-eating 2 meals + snack from 12 pm to 7/8pm (18 hours intermittent fasting)
-Drinking loads of water (12-16 cups)
-attending to de-stressing activities (stretching, being in the present, breathing out slower than in when I'm tense, mindfully petting the dog).
Sleeping regular hours 11 pm to 7 am. ( not tonight obviously).

Congrats on finishing your MSW graduate degree.
In reading your intro, I'm guessing you are tall like me. I'm 5'8", having shrunk an inch over the past few decades, and set my calories at 1800 tho I'm not a calorie counter, I am working on upping protein 90 gm plus per day and keeping starchy carbs low. With moderate activity, I'm slowly losing although that's not my intent - research is showing it's better to be a little heavier as we age.
Good job focusing on hanging onto muscle, by the way. I'm 72 and really miss the strength I had when I was your age.
I hadn't read that too few calories makes us hold on to fat. Do you know why that is?

I did what Lisa did, put my yoga mat out even though I didn’t ’feel like it’ I did a 10 minute routine, used my meditation app for 15 minutes, did Duolingo Spanish for 5 minutes, and went for a longer walk than normal, but had to stop because I ran into something I did not want to pass. Gandalf was in my way. I put it in the spoiler because some of you may be squeamish!
Yes, a rattle snake sunning himself! I just turned around and went back the way I was going! <shiver>!

Seasons:
Season 1 would be up to age 18.
Season 2 would be 22-35: working rotating shifts at the glass manufacturing plant, appendicitis, hysterectomy meeting my first husband and raising my kids.
Season 3 would be turmoil for me ages 13-45: Divorcing, meeting and marrying my current husband, elbow surgery, bunion surgery, sinus surgery, glass plant closing and moving to TN.
Season 4 would be 45-60: getting my bachelors, and first masters while working in the IT department at the hospital, Perotid gland surgery, leaving there and teaching IT at the community college and starting my second masters. Then moving back to CT
Season 5 60-currently:
Taking early retirement/disability selling everything and getting the RV. Driving cross country, spending first winter in Souther NM, traveling the NorthWest, then settling here hosting at the State Park
@Machka, this does sound like the plot for a TV series! LOL Or the outline for an autobiography!

Dang vertigo acting up. I feel so achy in my scalp, neck, face. Its a different feeling from lets say a sinus cold. My eyeballs are achy! It will pass. It always does. This afternoon I plan on taking a steamy hot shower and bath.💖👍🏼
I am enjoying the break not having the worker guys here. Our house is stillness quiet. Except for the heat on and off, the woosh of the propane coming on with our fireplace periodically (usually just in the mornings) and and hum of the fridge.💖

Well hello Ladies! It’s been a while. I’ve been avoiding screens as much as possible other than work-related stuff. But, I slowly skimmed over the past 6 weeks or so. I had not been able to catch up since we were away in Solvang in April.
I know some have had losses or injuries or are going through some rough times (Carol, Rusty, Michele, Annie are who I remember). Some pet maladies (Rori) :-(. Hugs to you all. Some victories and accomplishments! High fives to you!

Thanks for the discussion on Teddy Swims. I just “discovered” him a couple weeks ago and really enjoy his music. He was on a Pandora station I was listening to. Well, he’s playing at a casino around here and I went to get tickets at the moment they went on public sale and the entire venue was only available as “verified resell.” Well, that means ticket resellers and I refuse to buy from them. So, I’ll miss his show. But, after you talked about it, now I know why they bought up the venue.

Heather-I can tell in the tone of words that you are nearing your first surgery. I hear a bit of “relief” in your writing.
Beth-I hope they get your hearing sorted out.

Food pickiness in the spoiler.I don’t think of myself as picky. However, like Lisa, I despise the taste, smell, and texture of bell pepper and think it ruins the entire dish if it’s anywhere near my food. I have a big issue with restaurants that don’t declare it on their dishes, but list everything else, as if everyone loves bell peppers so it doesn’t matter. I won’t order food with “seasonal vegetables” because that means a plate full of bell pepper of different colors. I do not like when the individual components of the food are hidden in sauces and spices. That makes me think there is something wrong with the components (spoiling fish, for example) or the cook just doesn’t know how to cook. I also don’t care for the texture of onions, so I cook them till they are caramelized, or nearly there. I also don’t care for game meat that’s too “gamey” or fish that is too “fishy.” However, I think those flavors are likely the result of sub-par ingredients or prep. I won’t cook fish inside my house because the aroma is too strong and I will smell it for days and won’t be able to sleep.
Otherwise, I’ll try nearly anything at least once and I love taking food tours when I travel.
I am re-reading “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil” in prep for my trip to Savannah. I’m not only looking forward to the trip, but I’m looking forward to the time with my niece. I rarely get quality time with any of the kids when I visit there. I love it when I can go places with them alone, especially if it involves traveling or new experiences.
Ok, this is long enough. I’ve got a busy day ahead of me, so I better get to it.

Tracey every group of acquaintances has at least one person who won’t eat “X” For me, its cilantro, fresh tomatoes, most berries and everything listed in my reply to Lisa. My friend T is gluten free and vegan. My friend D can’t eat garlic, or any spicy food (hard for her as she was raised cooking Italian food) and most meat due to GERD. You are NOT alone, weird nor hard to get along with, but a blessing to all who know you.
Heather your brother’s kindness shines out from his smile. His super wife must be a saint too, to open her home and heart so very wide.
Machka you are an inspiration, taking time to understand when key words are missing. Top ship and diagram, brilliant. You model patience and persistent effective caregiving for us all.
Lisa I’m with youon the green peppers, but like fresh orange bell bell peppers and can enjoy the yellow and red ones, DEFINITELY NOT cooked. :sick: Likewise for tendons and bone bits in poultry and meat. Salt? I used to eat it with a spoon! Only mildly lactase deficient, can tolerate yoghurt and most cheeses as the lactose has already had one chain broken. Beano gives me horrible stomach cramps. Lately foreswore my cottage cheese for breakfast as it was plugging me up. All squash, organ meats, seafood and fish gag me except my own tuna salad made from TJ’s solid albacore with Best Foods mayonnaise and sweet gherkins.Tina that stinks about the Teddy Swims concert being only available to “verified resellers”. Are they trying to prevent scalpers?
Time to borrow a leaf from Heather, Lisa and Rita and just get started. Gonna stand up any second now and walk into the living room, turn on the wii and play some balance games, which will lead to knee pt, which will lead to shoulder pt which will lead to breakfast!

About being a picky eater. When I was about nine years old, my family drove from the west coast to the east coast and I ordered a tuna sandwich for every meal including breakfast. Later I was more adventurous and would try new things especially when traveling. Now my eating is better defined by the limited things I choose to eat. I rarely eat in restaurants and don't eat at other people's houses so I'm not faced with food I don't want to eat. There are a few restaurants we go to (or pick up take out) and I get exactly the same thing every time at each restaurant. Interestingly, I read the whole menu, then order exactly what I ordered before. I never get up and wonder what I'll eat, because I already know. It makes grocery shopping easier because it's the same stuff all the time. Jake eats a greater variety but he adds his own food to the order and has a lot of the day to eat what he wants.
I saw a cartoon year ago of a dog looking happily at the food in her bowl and thinking "Oh boy, dog food again". I have the same feeling with the food I prepare for myself "Oh boy, Barbie chow again !"
Rebecca, we did a kitchen remodel a few years ago that involved being without a stove for about two weeks and our meals were whatever could be cooked in the microwave with the coffee pot and hot water kettle available, as well. After that, I am always grateful for my stove even if all I do is scramble eggs.
I got my teeth cleaned and the hygienist found a few spots that looked like the dentist needed to see them so I have to go back next week. My teeth have done me well for over 70 years so want to take good care of them.

Tina - Yes, I feel I'm nearly there, but hoping nothing scuppers it. I hate taking all these pain killers, but I can't do without them.
People think that it only hurts when you walk, but it radiates all down your leg, even at rest. Broken sleep is killing, and I absolutely rely on my afternoon nap. I HATE the middle of the night.
I wrote 83 words today. I'm keeping it light and fun. Going with the flow.
Zoom today with 'the girls', but B wasn't there. We don't know if she just forgot, or if something has happened.

To reach my goals I had gastric sleeve in February. Best decision ever and also so hard! I’m loving the app besides it not agreeing with a bariatric diet.

Barbara - Heck, I forgot to add tomatoes to my list. Funny, I love a good spaghetti Bolognese or meatballs in marinara, but whole canned or sliced fresh tomatoes are just icky, and if the pieces are too big in a pasta sauce, I'll pick those out too. My "Lisa Chow," when Corey married me was chicken corn dogs and bean and cheese burritos, both frozen, heated up in the microwave. He still believes he rescued me from a horrible life. He may be right. The fact that he's a cook certainly didn't hurt... The first thing he made for me was hamburger soup. At the time, I didn't eat beef and I still do not like soup or eat it. No place to hide the nasty things when you're eating soup, so I just manned up and ate it. Love does funny things.
Anyway... cooling down from a sweaty gardening session of weeding, trimming, cleaning some overgrown places, and hauling brush to the burn pile, total of 98 minutes, 590 calories. I'm consistently working at 6 calories per minute this week, both in yoga and in yard work, which tells me I'm moving faster and putting in more effort in a similar amount of time. When I started the yoga routine in mid-March, I was only working at 3.5 calories per minute. I'm trying to gently move that higher without pushing my heart rate too hard. Delicate balance, that.
Cool enough to jump in the shower now...

I think Ticketmaster claims to try to prevent scalpers, but ticket resellers do not seem to be considered scalpers here. In any case, the resellers do have bots that successfully buy the tickets and do resell them at an increase. This does not seem to be as much of an issue in other states or countries, but it is a massive problem here. It will probably take legislation that outlaws ticket resellers, but that is highly unlikely. If I can find them at face value, I will buy them, but I usually cannot find them for the hot events.

Back from the nutritionist, and I have taken my first shot of Trulicity ..im hoping it gives me a jump start to get on the wagon and start getting down to my ideal weight.
Poor Tracy she is just overwhelmed with everything.

Machka - so interesting reading about your DH's journey through this new house transition. He is facing challenges, and I wonder if these challenges are helping his brain a teeny bit as he encounters them, maybe regrowing some synapses in the long run? I know you've said to expect gradual deterioration as he ages, but we can hope. You are becoming an expert on the human brain through all of this, as well as becoming proficient in his "language". I remember I did that a bit with my DH, though there was no coming back for him, but he still had moments of clarity and wisdom as his disease progressed.
Tina - Midnight in the Garden of Good & Evil was one of my favorite films. I need to pick up the book.
Barbie - do you still like Tuna sandwiches? Are they still part of your "Barbie chow?" LOVED that video, by the way. Thanks for sharing it. I'm having the monthly lunch with my friend tomorrow and have to remind myself to talk about something other than doctor visits, A1C, and achy feet, lol.
Lisa - I hope the Skyrizi delivers the benefits you are hoping for. I am impressed by your basil crop. Some of you have wonderful Basil green thumbs. I may have to break down and buy basil and the store to make pesto to have on hand. Wow, you were busy this morning. Good job. 98 minutes of hard work for sure.
That reminds me. Here are the goals in the Diabetes Prevention Program if anyone is interested:PreventT2 Program Goals
By the end of the first 6 months, PreventT2 program goals are to:
• Lose at least 5 percent of your starting weight,
• Lose at least 4 percent of your starting weight and log an average of 150 minutes of activity each week, OR
• Lower your HbA1C by 0.2 percent.
By the end of the second 6 months, program goals are to:
• Keep off the weight you’ve lost
• Keep working toward your weight or HbA1C goals, if you haven’t reached them
• Lose more weight if you wish, but no more than 1 to 2 pounds a week
• Keep getting at least 150 minutes of activity each week
The way I'm going, I'll be over 150 minutes by the end of the day today. (3 days total)
I just finished weed eating a bit more and pruning the grapes. Somewhat. They are intertangled with honeysuckle over the trellis my DH built many years ago. So be it. Life on the edge of the jungle, lol.
Yesterday afternoon the tech from the power company came and replaced the ancient analog power meter with a spiffy digital smart meter. It was fun watching him do the swap, took about three minutes. Nice young man from N. Carolina, he'd been out here 3 months. Said there were 8 of them contracted to replace meters in our mountainous county.
Washed my hair this morning and just as I dunked by head under the faucet, realized I still had my hearing aid in. STOP THE PRESSES! Way to go, Netters. I carefully toweled that side of my head, dried my hands and removed it. Luckily, it hadn't gotten wet. It's behaving today so far, no bugging my ear.

Food Fussiness ... who doesn't have food preferences? Shame on those who point out a preference that is different than their own ...
The cochlear implant was activated! It's long so in a spoiler.Expectations were low as I haven't heard sound in my right ear in decades, but guess what? After the initial few moments of my brain scrambling to make sense of it all ... I can hear! It is not "natural" hearing at this stage. At first it was very much like listening to Minnie Mouse on helium, but it is already changing tone. Still very digital sounding, but with rehabilitation it should become more natural. I am hearing in digital form sounds that I thought were gone forever ... the phone, the television, the noise the buttons make when pushed on the microwave, the dog licking himself All of these things are being heard again. I've been using captions on my phone in recent years to understand speech. I've shut it off and with lip reading, I'm able to converse without it. I am hearing words. We did do a baseline test to see if I could discern words without lip reading. For reference, my baseline prior to activation was 0% word discernment. I was able to understand a few words! Not great and it took a lot of concentration but 100% improvement. This morning, I kept hearing something I couldn't place and when I asked my son what it was I was hearing, he said, "mom ... I think it's the birds at your feeder." Only hiccup was the magnet that holds the processor on the coil wasn't strong enough ... too thick of hair and still some swelling from surgery ... so it kept falling off. A stronger magnet was overnighted and we took care of that already today. Absolutely do not want to lose the processor! Funniest thing for me right now is hearing my laugh in digital form ... it sounds like the tickle me Elmo toy. So I laugh and then laugh again hearing my own laughter. I have officially slipped over the edge! This is a journey and I have a long way to go but I am very optimistic. Oh and the hearing aid issue. Guess I use more data from it that I realized. The hearing aid, in conjunction with the implant is producing more sound in the implanted ear. We're still going to work on getting more natural sound from the hearing aid though. Thanks for all of your good thoughts and wishes. I am blessed.

Beth - I am so glad to hear you are optimistic. My Uncle was skeptical, but it helped him so much and he was so happy with it he ended up doing his other ear. It was a big decision for him, because he still had 10% residual hearing in the "other" ear. He went ahead and did it and after a few months of the second processor going live, he was happy with it too.

I was just exchanging messages with an acquaintance who had her hip replaced recently. She is doing fantastic. She used her cane for 4 days and now is able to get around her house without any cane or assistive device. If she doesn't have her husband or a friend with her when she leaves the house she takes the cane for confidence more than necessity. You will do great!

Beth That's wonderful! So pleased there are such leaps forward already. Such a marvelous thing what these implants do, and that your brain is laying down new pathways with each sound you hear... Awesome! I'm not usually reticent about what I don't want, food-wise, but I was just stepping a toe in the dating world with Corey back then, and didn't want to scare him off. Now he usually knows more what I can or will eat than I do...
Barbie - Ha! Loved the video.
Lanette - I enjoyed the book "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil" far more than the movie, but of course, the book could go into so much more depth. Thanks for the good wishes on the Skyrizi, dear heart. I'm trying not to hope, but that's not really an option, so I'm trying instead to prepare myself if it doesn't work. There have been some minor signs of improvement already, but there were minor signs of improvement with both Humira and Rinvoq... and then they plateaued.
Heather - I so look forward to your joy once the surgery gets your life back where it belongs. That kind of pain is hard on your whole being. Not long now!
Allie - Be careful honey and don't lean on the drug alone. It can make things better, but you really have to be part of that change, change the way you eat, serving size, all of it. You can do this! You're stronger than you know, and this might just be what you need to help you feel better. My heart's there with you, dear heart.

When Jake's 16 year old son came to live with us shortly after we were married, we made some basic house rules and one of them was that no one was allowed to comment on anyone else's food choices.
Lanette, I always have several cans of white meat tuna in water in my cupboard. Now I will eat it with a spoonful of mayonnaise plus some good bread, a bagel, or a serving of cole slaw. Interestingly, it is now the only sea food I'll eat. There was a time when I ate salmon and shrimp and sometimes fish sticks but now I don't.
The diabetes prevention goals look like the goals we all have. We all want to lose weight, get healthier, and keep the weight off. The trick is to do the exercise, eat the right foods, stay away from the wrong foods, and be careful about portion size. Everyone knows that broccoli is better than Ben and Jerry's chocolate therapy ice cream. The problem is how to make myself make the right choice. I'm sure your class will address that soon.
I'm just back from 35 minutes of walking Annie, plus 30 minutes working in the yard with the "help" of dogs. Annie is walking more and better each day. Just made it to 10,000 steps. I'll walk at 5PM with my friend.

Well done, Allie - I just worry about you, my dear friend, it's been a few tough years for you, with all the issues with your health, and Tracey's babies. I've found that the big drugs have drawbacks as well as benefits, or they have had for me. I hope it's all you hope it will be.3 -

Like you, I don’t like a lot of things mixed, casseroles are not my friends.
I don’t like spices, not even pepper.
I won’t eat onions, but will eat the outside of an onion ring. I will eat a caeser salad, but no other salad dressings. For veggies, I’ll eat carrots, peas and corn. Asparagus and broccoli very occasionally and only a couple of bites.
Fruit - strawberries, apples, bananas (as long as they have just become ripe, usually not the next day), raspberries, grapes and watermelon. None cooked though, I don’t eat pies.
Much more that I’m not thinking of right now.
Tina - an inclusive class is what we used to call a special needs class. The difference is the kids spend part of the day in the regular classrooms now.
Ticket resellers are a thing here too. A lot of artists are trying to combat it by limiting the number of tickets sold at a time. I heard one artist is actually going back to a Box Office format. I forget who it was though, it was just on the news a couple weeks ago.
Rita - I would be running the opposite direction.
Barbie - I would probably be as routine with you at home if I lived alone. I do order the same thing at most restaurants.

I finished my last day at the Junior High today. I’m going to miss it there. The first week I wondered what I had gotten myself into, but getting to know the kids made a big difference.
One of the teachers told me today that there were 4 girls who had told her how much they liked me, that I listened to them and took an interest in what they were doing. I was shocked, I had had to speak to them a few times.
You never really know if you’re influencing someone or not.
I feel like crap tonight, I’m hoping to feel better tomorrow, I don’t want my 5 days off to be spent sick.

Yay Beth! Hope things continue to go well.
Got part of the gazebo area mowed today and of course it is supposed to rain tomorrow. I did some spraying this evening on areas where we don't want things to grow, areas where we have put rocks and don't want weeds taking over.
Tomorrow is water exercise and we will see if I get a chance to do any yard work.

Wrote over two hundred words today. Easier writing, just recounting a pleasant past event. Right now, I'm just making sure I do something, even if it's just one sentence. Aka James Clear, "I'm the kind of person who writes every weekday."

My friend B, who missed the Zoom yesterday, was outside weeding and lost track of time. No drama, though G was convinced there was.
I made another attempt at buying a bra this morning. I really can't wear a conventional bra, as I have a very broad back and ribcage and always feel as if the life is being crushed out of me by a vice, whatever size I buy. My breasts are not big, so I've been using tight fitting camisole tops to keep everything together. It works reasonably ok, but, in the summer, I don't always want that extra layer. So I'm going to try a new type of very light stretchy seamless bra, in a flesh colour. I have no faith this will be any better, but I can always return it. I've seen it loads of times on YouTube, and the reviews are good. Not sure about my size, but I've gone for XL. I will probably take the padded cups out.
Wish me luck! It will be a game-changer if it works.
