JUNE 2024 Monthly Running Challenge

Yesterday, I ran/walked 3 treadmill miles. Today, I ran/walked 3 pavement miles with humidity. This brings me to a total of 34.3 miles for June. I'm over 75% of my goal of 40 miles this month. Excited about getting these miles in. Only less than 6 miles to go until I accomplish my goal. WooHoo!
Next Sunday, I have my first race of the year: She Power 10K10 -

@ContraryMaryMary a little adds up so fast! Glad you're getting up to a spot where you want to be to consistently smoke Harry!
@quilteryoyo I was told for one of them that they've had break-ins and having their things stolen. Apparently it's pretty common to get kicked out. If I were closer to the metro area, I could just tread down the next block to another garage and repeat.
Maybe road trip wasn't a good word. I just traveled a few hours by car to a destination we're staying at for the weekend. So far so fun!
Sad to hear about your aunt. I wish her a fast recovery. Major thumbs up on the efforts to keep the streak alive!
@chris_in_cal 5 pounds lost is a lot! Every bit counts!
@Laurz9191 smart! I like the plan of attack. My mental blocks are actually accomplishing the miles, and my physical blocks are trying to maneuver getting hydration or electrolytes in me while running, not choking, and not losing running cadence. How are the sprints working out for you in the schedule?
@steviebee888 killing it! You're gonna do great!3 -
Did my pace run on the treadmill. 7 mph for the first 3 miles. I honestly didn't think I had it in me. Been about 2 years since I ran that pace. Back then I would feel really bad around the 15 minute mark and then second wind hits to finish up the last 15 minutes. This time felt strong throughout. My only issue was eating breakfast. Stopped for a bit to let my stomach digest a little more. Tried running a bit faster at 7.1 mph until I couldn't anymore (almost quarter of a mile)6 -
@quilteryoyo I have a Nordic track with an ifit subscription.
@VO2Maxlet Marathon training is a different beast for sure. One thing I took to heart from reading ahead of doing my own marathon was resisting the urge to do more. Trying to go a little faster than your plan calls for or going a little further because you're feeling good. As the miles add up so does the fatigue.
As for the hydration and electrolytes piece, start training that now. Start trying out fuel and hydration options on your longer runs, even at distances you wouldn't necessarily fuel for. If you aren't currently doing a lot of long runs where you fuel regularly, it can take some trial and error. For me it also took some time to train my stomach to handle the amount of water I needed to be taking in.5 -
June total: 74.1/100 miles

6/20: 7.9 miles
6/22: 8 miles
I am camping this weekend with my kid at a state park a couple hours north of Houston. I woke up early to get my run done before it got ridiculously hot. I stuck with the 4/1 intervals and overall my HR stayed reasonable given the conditions. I had my frozen hydration pack, salt tabs, and 1 gel. Overall I am pleased with how this run went. It's really nice to feel like my fitness is back!

@VO2Maxlet - I am surprised you picked a full marathon as your first event. I would be terrified. My first was a HM that a friend signed me up for and ran with me. She knew I would never do one otherwise.
Also I think you asked me a while back about the Apple Watch. It has some pretty great features and they have improved the metrics for various workouts a lot. I do run Strava on it though because that is what I am mostly used too. @SummerSkier uses the Apple Watch run workout and may be able to comment on it more than me. I like the way the watch integrates with my phone and laptop so all the info is everywhere and if I don't have my phone next to me I can see who is calling or what someone is texting me on the watch. Note I was a diehard Microsoft Windows geek previously as that is all I had ever used for work and home.
@Laurz9191 - have fun in Hamburg - loved it there!
@quilteryoyo - you are one crazy busy woman! Wow! I hope your aunt continues to improve and recuperate!
@Teresa502 - I hope you can enjoy Orlando despite the heat and humidity.
@tarun_yadavA - what have you been up to? Missing the food porn!
I had treatment this week so hadn't been up to getting out until today. I still wasn't feeling great but went out anyway and while hot it was an ok outing. I am so impressed that everyone seems to be dealing with the extreme heat we are having here - in JUNE! I certainly hope that doesn't mean it will be even hotter in the coming months. I will be making a conscious effort to get up earlier to get Hobbes out for a nice walk or even a bit of running. I thought I had posted this previously but couldn't find it looking back - when I went out on the 15th it was too hot to take Hobbes so I was able to go a bit faster and even ran some segments. It felt so good to just run a bit!

You are doing great @steviebee888 .
Nice job running while in FL @Teresa502 . Love the pictures. The little palm tree looks like it is amazed at your pace and tenacity.
Thanks @VO2Maxlet . I consider a few hours drive a road trip. Glad you are enjoying your weekend away. I thought that might be the case for the parking garage non-running rule. I'm impressed by your pace on the TM today! So speedy!
@martaindale I have an old Nordic Track I Fit, but never got the subscription because my internet was so bad and I figured it wouldn't work. Being so old, I bet it wouldn't work now if I got the subscription - I bought it in about 2008.
@martaindale Congratulations on a great early morning run and feeling good about your fitness level.
Thanks @shanaber . Glad you felt like getting out for a walk today. This heat is kind of ridiculous this early in the summer.

Mom and I trimmed trees along my driveway again. We were out about 3 hours - actual trimming was about 2 hours. Dumping them and taking breaks took up the rest of the time. We quit when we got hot and tired. It was 85F (29.4C) when I got back in the house.
I waited until 7:15 pm to go out for my wun. I had hoped it would have cooled off by then, but it was 89F (31.7C) and not a bit of a breeze. At least it was all in the shade. My run was slower than normal because of that - I made a conscious effort to slow down. I still had to "cheat" a little on the last couple of hill runs. I followed the plan and did 2/1 run/walk x 10, plus the warm up and cool down walks. My Avg pace was 14:27 min/mile. Avg HR was 135 with a max of 155 bpm. The first mile of running was 13:53. The second was 15:01. A little extra walking and slower running will do that.5 -
Neighborhood 1Mile (at 12"19 pace). Streak day 53
I ran yesterday but didn't enter it here.
I have never had any type of running streak before, now fifty three runs in a row. Streaks make it easy to be #1

Sunday long run. 18km today as per the ever increasing schedule. Perfect running conditions in the forest - cool and still, sunny but with wispy cloud in low lying in spots - very pretty.
I had a late night last night so was not in top form but enjoyed myself nevertheless. However, by the top of the third major climb, about kilometre 15, I started to run out of steam. So the final 20 minutes were a bit of a slog.
Got home, had a large lunch followed by a long snooze.7 -
Morning all
Got in 9.36M at 09"38
@ContraryMaryMary great run!
@shanaber hello! I'm being good in June! Saving myself for carnage in July (starting with a boozy trip to Berlin in less than a couple of weeks)8 -
Picture of the lake from yesterday morning. The Internet is spotty here and it wouldn't upload yesterday. It's a pretty spot.7

Cut my run short after seeing a sick juvenile pigeon. Not a fan of walking around downtown in my running bra, but I decided to towel the bird in my shirt and walk home. Got it to a volunteer with the pigeon rescue in less than an hour and it will see a rehabber today 🐦. I will probably not be able to learn the outcome, but the bird already perked up a bit in a box before I handed it over.7 -

Great job with the streak @chris_in_cal !

51.35/80.0 mile goal
I went to the hospital to see my Aunt after church and then me, mom, mom's other sister, and my cousin (injured Aunt's daughter) went out for lunch. Full tummy meant no walk or run right away, so I took a nap after I got home.
I did get up and go out for a mile walk - my rest day - on the driveway. It was 90F (32.2C) and breezy. I was glad one mile was all I had planned.5 -

108.18/125 miles completed for June
I had a surprisingly good run today. I woke up early enough this morning, but I couldn't drag myself out of bed, and when I finally did I just couldn't get going. I knew it was going to be hot. But when I looked at my run the year app I noticed I was 11 miles away from my 1100 mile badge. (I am counting all of my steps for run the year, not just running.) So I decided to go for 11 miles. It was already pretty warm at 79°F when I started out. I just took it easy and tried to stay in the shade as much as possible. I usually run in the cemetery on Sundays. When I got there the gate hadn't been opened yet. But I remembered that one of the gates has a gap between the fence and the gate so I snuck in and ran there anyway. By the time I got back to the main gate it had been opened. I didn't see any critters today, but I did see several people that I knew. I saw one of the owners of the company I work for. He is also a runner, but he wasn't running. I think he was picking up his kids from a friend's house to go to church. I also saw my sister heading to the lake. And an elderly gentleman who I have known my whole life pulled up beside me and hollered "pick it up, pick it up ". At that point I was pretty hot and sweaty and I just laughed and waved at him. I also saw a few people that I know walking at the park. I guess they were trying to beat the heat of the day too. The last two miles or so I was rethinking my decision to run 11 miles. It was really getting hot by then. I did carry water with me and stopped for a drink several times. I do need to check into the salt tabs. I can't find any in town, so I am going to have to order them online. @martaindale is there a certain brand you recommend? By the time I got home it was 89°F feels like 94°F and I was so glad to be done, but it was a good run and even if the last couple of miles were tough, I felt good.

Neighborhood 1Mile (at 11"21 pace). streak day 54
I did my 4th "June Sunday two-a-day plan," I also ran 3.02 miles this morning down at Mission Bay. It was the first hot day if the year. I felt it the last ten minutes or so.

Morning all.
Got in 6.36M (at 10"08 pace).
Sunny here in London today!
@chris_in_cal well done on getting a 5K distance in!7 -
Logging 2 Florida sunshine runs. On Sunday I ran 6 miles and we got in 5 miles this morning before checking out of the resort. We are headed to the port now. Great running everyone!!8
-
@chris_in_cal was it you talking about the On Cloud shoes breaking down fast? I can attest to that. I have a pair that I bought for travel and use them for running while I’m traveling. I ran in them on Saturday for the first time in weeks and immediately noticed the lack of support. Before this mornings run the bottom of my feet were sore from running the prior two days in them. Going to have to retire them from running I’m afraid.4

A blast from the past:
It still works!7 -
Hello! I just found this group so I'm hoping to join in for July. I have been running for the past decade or so and am currently working on building back my consistency after a slump. Throughout June I've ran five days a week, 5km each time. Just finished today's 5km!9

I'm a bit late to the party
24.06 2.1km 18min 8:48/km - slow
total 2.05km
Went on a vacation to two Channel Islands in the first June week, cycled around and had a lot of fun, returned, made a cup of tea, poured said tea into my lungs instead of the right opening, realized I used the teacup I'd just brought to the kitchen; the one where a tea bag was in for the whole week of my vacation. Anyway, I annoyed my lungs so much that I could not do anything for two weeks without ending up in a massive coughing fit. I'm still not fully back to normal, but very slow running works again with only minor coughing.6
