LESS Alcohol ~ OCTOBER 2024 ~ One Day at A Time

I screwed up. Driving down the main street of our suburb on the beach, which we moved to 18 months ago, I was pointing out the new things that were opening, or reopening for the summer. In this, I pointed out the bar that's expanded, the new bar that opened where the burger shop was, and the 2 new bars where the ice cream place was, and where the cafe was expanding. We do this all the time, the "look how things are changing!" because we bought in a bit of a dogy area, but it's rapidly improving. But now partner is craving beer, and in a foul mood. I didn't even think about it, I wasn't suggesting we go there or anything, but pointing out new bars was NOT helpful and was really thoughtless.
So now he's mad, and I'm sad and worried. But there's no booze in the house (that he knows of), so there will be no drinking... today.10 -
@NonnieDoiron That is the coolest story of the week...maybe month...or year!! What an amazing young man and you have raised!! I did cry a little too.
@Alatariel75 If he made it through the night, I hope he feels better this morning. We all know how he feels. It's tough, but he's got you to support him through it
@SurferGirl1982 It's OK. Breathe and try again
I'm sitting here waiting for my SO to get home from the casino for dinner with a friend last night. I'm sure he got toasted and probably fell asleep in his truck. It's not the first time and probably won't be the last
He finally called. He drank too much and was sleeping in his truck.

Guess today is another AF day, at least til after 11pm.
Iwillnotcryiwillnotcryiwillnot....
Yes, the uniform is Jr.ROTC. He looks so dashing! 😉 I’m just naturally biased though. The kids had a blast last night at the dance. GF got to hang out with her friends (she doesn’t dance), my son danced like a fool, and GF allowed 1 slow dance.
Thank you for the compliment! I don’t normally step into photos when I haven’t fixed my hair (no need to immortalize my lazy disheveled-ness), but I was overwhelmed at work that morning and didn’t get to do anything with it. And, I just HAD to get my picture with him. I was too happy for him not to do it!

You look beautiful, @NonnieDoiron and your smile is radiant!7

@NonnieDoiron beautiful pictures and story. Your son is handsome and sounds amazing. You raised a winner.
@SurferGirl1982 you DID accomplish LESS yesterday.
▪︎started later
▪︎LESS ounces
▪︎You were aware if your drinking
▪︎You got in here and were accountable
WIN-WIN-WIN

Tears or Rejoicing? Did I miss a post where you mentioned why? 🥺
Here is your donkey
@Michieb125 I love your SOBERISH OCTOBERISH words. So happy your time with family was a success.
@Womona there is definitely a challenge with drinking LESS when there is a water vessel involved. My first husband and I owned two different boats in our day. Alcohol always seemed to be the first thing to get packed. Now I ask myself WHY? If ever there was a time for me to have my wits about me in case of an emergency, it would have been then. I love your athletic adventures, you keep in motion which is so important.
@SunnyDays930 @RubyRed427 @xbowhunter @globalhiker your non-alcohol check-ins are so important to this group. I for one, so admire the confidence that is oozing from each post you write. It really does inspire (even if you don't realize it) us to reach our personal goals or to have LESS in our lives.

Thanks everyone!
Today is a new day. And the beginning of a new week. I feel confident about being AF today.
The liquor store is only open from 11am to 5pm today. So, if I don't leave the house during those hours, I'll be fine 😀6 -

Thanks @MissMay👍

Thank you @MissMay. I see the Dr this Friday for my blood work. That will be 1 month AF. I am hoping it is improved as my liver enzymes were concerning the last time I had it done.8

Yay! Day 1 AF! I'm claiming it early because the liquor store just closed 😁

Thanks @chicbuc! Now I just have to keep it up!5

Big HUG for all of you working at it!!! I am so impressed. I love it that folks are thinking about their plan of what will work for them.
@NonnieDoiron what wonderful news and congratulations!! I am so proud of you and your son.
So, guess what today is? Day 50 AF! And yes of those 50 days, TEN were vacation days. I can't believe I did my first AF vacation since I was a kid AND I HAD A REALLY GOOD TIME WITHOUT WINE!! I wanted to drink some of those days, but chose a soft drink instead or if after dinner, it was a chocolate and an NA beer. I love feeling rational and being emotionally on an even keel and not having the wine devil in my head controlling my thinking and practically forcing me to drink. He's like a controlling abusive partner. I really hated that feeling and now I wonder if the risk of trying to drink a bit here or there is worth it since I really don't want that wine devil coming back to control me. I feel strong and good without him.12 -
Good morning my less alcohol friends.
You are all amazing!
Another weekend AF and loving it. I'm so clear and focused with a crazy amount of energy and get up and go...lol
Everyone in my circle is now accepting of my choice to be the best version of me so it's nice to no longer be pressured to poison myself.
AF - 36
A - Never again!
Cheers and have a great Monday!13 -
Day 29 AF
I have been so productive... cleaning, organizing, reading a lot. It's like I found several extra hours in the day! It's a gift. Went to a party yesterday. Everyone drank normally but lots of beverages there: great varieties. I skipped them and had Perrier in a wine glass. I brought my own Perrier. That's my new thing "BYOP" because not everyone has Perrier at a party!11 -
I had a very lazy Sunday binge watching a show and watching football. I did force myself to do my workout.
Monday night football tonight at the stadium will be my first big challenge this month, but right now I don't feel the urge to drink when we get there. Wine doesn't make me feel better. It doesn't make me have more fun. It would start making me feel fuzzy and sleepy right away, and I would feel terrible tomorrow. I think I can do get through AND have fun (as long as we win...lol) without wine. I did go to a game about a month ago that I didn't drink at because I had a hangover from the night before, and I had fun. Can you see I'm trying to talk myself into it?

@NonnieDoiron how exciting for your son!!!! You must be over the moon. Congratulations to him!!
@Alatariel75 you didn’t do anything wrong- it’s not your fault that all the old businesses turned into bars. You are not responsible for your SO’s moods. Yes, it must have been a huge challenge for him, but you clearly have his back.
@SurferGirl1982 congrats on your AF day!!!!! That’s fantastic.
To all of you with huge AF streaks, you are so inspiring- especially the amount of energy you have and the ability to just get stuff done!
In addition to this past Friday, I also blew my LA goals on Saturday. We sailed up to a friend’s dock and had two glasses of champagne on the boat-then inside for another drink, then back at the dock for one more. My poor liver. I really could have gone AF yesterday, but at the last minute I caved. So, only one glass.
A friend turned me on to an AF sparkling rosé that is supposed to be really good. I need to order it online, will report back. Meanwhile time to pick up some LA wine to wean myself off.
Ok, nice Monday reset for those who need it. Thanks for the much needed inspiration, AF warriors!

@Womona hi there - when you find out, can you let me know what brand that AF sparkling rose is and if you liked it? I am on the hunt for "the best one" for a special occasion. Too bad we can't just go to an AF sparking wine tasting!5

I’m very excited for those of you who are grabbing the AF brass ring this month. I can hear so much enthusiasm about your new found energy! Your tenacity and commitment to honor your deepest desires around drinking is honorable 🤗.
Keep up the awesome job!
I might be an odd one but love Mondays just as much as a Saturday! Making my weekly list of things I’d like to accomplish and some things I need to take care of. This day always feels like a fresh start with new found motivation to focus on health and wellness practices.
Didn’t plan on it, but finished off the other half of a good white wine last night that I had in the garage reefer. Later this week, my DH and I head out for a fall camp trip in our travel trailer. In the past (as in years 2021/2022), I would definitely bring several bottles for my camp trips and have Prosecco each day but not this time. Seems pretty ridiculous now but I can see it was about FOMO or not having ‘enough.’
Unlike previous months, I am doing fairly well with my October goal in terms of my AF days vs. A days. But, I did have wine a few days in a row over the weekend which I will be correcting today! Will refine and reset as I go for 5 dry days this week and embrace the changing season (literally and figuratively).
May you find your best resolve just for today.

I wish I could have just one drink .... around this time of the day, right after work and before dinner, the wine witch calls my name very loudly. Sigh. I know it serves no purpose, but the habit is so ingrained in my brain. I'll make a fake G&T and pretend. I still struggle sometimes. I hope I can feel like Xbow one day, where I don't even want it.10

I know what you mean @RubyRed427 Today is only Day 2 for me. And I hope to be like Xbow myself someday. Not to mention the success that @globalhiker and many others are having.
@SunnyDays930 you mentioned that you had to see your doctor this Friday for bloodwork. With 30 days under your belt, I imagine your liver enzymes should be greatly improved. I too have to see a new doctor myself next Wednesday. Unfortunately, it will only be Day 11 for me. They haven't ordered tests yet. I imagine they will order the tests next week. So I may have a few more AF days before I have my blood drawn. The last time that I had bloodwork done, I drank about 36 hours before the draw. And I had been drinking mostly daily for months. My intentions were to quit for a couple of weeks (at least) before. But it didn't work out that way. My enzymes were elevated. But the doctor was not majorly concerned. Good luck with your tests!
I hope everyone else is successful at achieving your goals!

It’s called Noughty, and supposedly the sparkling rose is fantastic. I can personally vouch for it until I order, but a close friend’s mom, who enjoys wine, thought it was great. I would love an AF or LA wine tasting!!!

AF tonight! Woo hoo! I didn’t even really want it-I wanted my dinner more. Had a great conversation with DS2, which is worth so much to me. Better than talking to him while chugging alcohol!9

I didn’t add my days right or something. But, these are correct now.
Anyway, the HOCO hype has died. We are back to reality.
Last night, at dinner, my husband could no longer stand the sound of my MIL chewing, grinding her dentures, breathing, gulping, and choking as she ate. So, he got up and turned on the stereo playing Trans Siberian Orchestra loudly. It drowned her noises out and made dinner much more tolerable.
We know she’s having troubles breathing deep enough, so she always sounds like she’s about to breathe her last breath. When she has mentioned it, we’ve asked her if she’s talked to the doctor about it. She did, they did a scan, found nodules on her spine, and now those have taken priority over her breathing. My thoughts are if she can’t breathe then why are they worried about the darn nodules? She’s going to flipping suffocate before they do anything to help her breathing.
We are trying to spare her feelings and have empathy for her, but we are struggling because her noises are like nails on a chalkboard to use. We can’t have guests eat with us anymore without a full warning and apology issued about the disgusting sounds that will occur at the table. It’s that bad!
I wish I could impress upon her doctors how big of an issue this is because I know she doesn’t tell them everything and attempts to self-diagnose A LOT! They need to know, but it’s my husband’s responsibility not mine. And, he’s not interested in dealing with it.10 -

@NonnieDoiron that sounds like a tough situation and it sounds like you're doing what you can to give your MIL grace. Will she allow you to advocate for her with the doctors?
@SurferGirl1982 Keep going! I knew you could get started!!
Monday night football sucked. We lost and lost 2 of our key players...1 for the rest of the season to a gruesome injury. I didn't drink and I really didn't even want one despite that.
Next test, weekend casino trip. I'm planning to uber to church and hang by the pool one day. I really do think I'll be fine, but fingers crossed.

@SurferGirl1982 rooting for you!! It's just a matter of hours before you have week one under your belt. You are inspiring me in getting "going" on my next "difficult challenge" of managing my AF life without sweets and junk food. If we don't challenge ourselves, we don't change, right?
I'm still AF, now working on reducing my sugar intake. After eating like a piggy for weeks, I can't believe I have not gained weight but I will for sure if this keeps up. Is anyone here trying to reduce calories and stop drinking at the same time? This is my current hurdle, letting go of the crutches - all my lovely wine replacements like chocolates and bad diet sodas and sweet fake wine bubbles, the delicious sugar and higher fat flavored yogurts, tortilla chips, oh and the carbs - all I want are carbs and junk! I'm so needing to re-balance my blood sugar and get on a low carb/high protein diet today.
6 egg whites with spoonful of salsa and off to the gym for BodyCombat class I go.....
